  • Funny Kenji story! While working for the MTA we routinely had to drive the busses thru the bus wash- Before the wash there was a huge pit that a mechanic could walk in and inspect the undercarriage of the bus. It was only used a few times a month... One day while driving over the 30 foot long pit I saw something dart across! I thought it was a Rat! However upon closer inspection I realized it was a small kitten! My friend Justin and I entered the pit from each end and caught the kitten! She was about the size of a soda can! Well, we looked all over for the mother to no avail- Afraid it would get hit by a bus I decided to take her home... The kitten was happy and healthy but needed a name- another friend at work said “How about Kenji!” I said “Kenji? I never heard of that!” He said Kenji was Japanese for “Lucky”. I thought “What a fitting name!” So I named her Kenji!!
    Fast forward three years and I find out Kenji doesn’t mean Lucky- it means “Strong, second Son”. To this day I never told Kenji the truth! 😃

    Here's some info on this screwdriver:
    UMT is the name of "Urim Metal" - an old metal factory in Kibbutz Urim (western Negev area) in Isreal. It started as "Urim Metal" - a factory for knives and cutlery (I think), that later (circa 1977) moved to manufacturing screwdrivers. During this transformation they also changed the name to "UMT".
    in a newspaper article from 1977 they claim to manufacture around 27 screwdriver models, which are assembled from 2 parts: an acetate handle made in germany by "Bayer", and the steel blade that is made locally in Israel.
    I believe the factory no longer exists today.
    I hope it helps, love your channel! :)

      ScoutCrafter thank you! It's the least I can do. Israel is quite young and doesn't have much history in tool industry, I was lucky to find that information myself :)
      You did a beautiful job on this one, just like on all the other tools. Thanks for taking care of these pieces of history!

      @@ScoutCrafter I got inspired watching your wonderful restorations and decided to try on some of my old tools. I started on a screwdriver that is almost a mirror copy of the one you did but I always have trouble shaping flat screwdriver heads - so you have a video that shows how to do this?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 років тому +1

      Hi Ian! In the beginning the best way to shape a screwdriver blade is by hand using sandpaper wrapped around a small block of wood! You are so right as it is very easy to over-grind the profile of such a small area!!!

      Bayer's history ties it to IG Farben. It's fascinating that an Israeli company would do business with them.

    Today I was lucky enough to find a 1/4x4 UMT screwdriver at a thrift shop. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone when I saw that it was made in Israel and that the blade was stainless steel. It had a bit of paint splatter, but in a few minutes, it cleaned up and looks nearly as good as your finished restoration. Thanks for the tip on the clear coat!

If we could, we'd have your whole shop dipped in transluscent red plastic!!! Nice job, really, and adding the clear coats really did make up most of the finish gap to what you wanted.

    Hi John,
    I picked up a couple Craftsman 3/4" wood chisels from a pile of junk along the road. The kind with the steel cap for pounding on. They are is horrible shape. Well at least one is. I cleaned one but I wanted to do some research to see if there was a better way.
    Clear coat sounds like a good idea.

    i think using that clear coat was a stroke of genius. Perhaps you could even put another coat on and really get rid of everything. When I saw the driver from the beginning I really didn't have much hope but it turned out amazing. Makes me want to go garage sailing!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 років тому

      Hello Joe! Very possible on the second coat!! The only reason I was very sparing with the clear is I want to see how it holds up! Will it crack and chip off? Will it fog or discolor? It's my first time doing this so I have my reservations about long term... Right now it looks awesome! Thanks very much!!!! 😃👍

      Hello Tony! Kenji was feeling very friendly that day.. She was a real lap cat for my Mom... Unfortunately Mom passed on and Kenji is slowly warming up to me... Even though I rescued her!! The Screwdriver worked out really well, I'm so glad you enjoyed the project!!!! Thanks again Tony!!!!!!

      My father had two rescue cats and each repaid him with huge amounts of love. They became his shadow wherever he went.

    Very nice! I'm going to try the clear coat trick myself - I have just the candidate for it. Love the cat story. We have one that showed up at our door in 2011 and never left!

    Hey scout me again. The other night after watching one of your videos I got the itch to get out in the garage and restore one of my old tools. It's an old combo square that's been in my family for a long time. A couple generations at least . And it was pretty rusted could barely see the measurements. Long story short after a good polish up through the grits of some wet/dry paper it revealed a logo , turns out I've got my self a starret combination square . It's my go too I use it for everything and now I know that the old square I've been using is a starret . Just a silly little story but the idea is I just wanted to thank you for these great videos you keep pumping out they really inspire me and get the engine running. Keep it up thanks alot

    Hot-Diggity, that is enjoyable to see and watch. I loved the wooden handle screwdriver, blown away by the acetate screwdrivers video, and this just adds to the library. We see those plastics, and think it must be a goner, but you still bring it back...

      Hello Will!! You and I aren't the only people who like screwdrivers! I was pleasantly surprised to find out we have quite a few people who appreciate these forgotten tools!!!! I bought his at the flea market a couple weeks ago and when I asked the guy how much he looked embarrassed to ask one dollar... I guess he thought start high and when I offer a quarter he will come back with fifty cents! However you should have seen his smile when I said "ok sure!" Then as I gave him the dollar he looked almost guilty... Lol. I don't bicker over a few cents when the item isn't broken or overpriced... I'm glad I picked it up because it turned out quite nice! Thanks very much!!! 😃👍

      Hello Ian! That Sink has a long history!!!! It was my Grandmothers for 40 years until she literally wore it out, then it was put down the basement as a slop sink for everything from cleaning fish to pain brushes! Then 20 years ago I though let me spruce her up, I spent HOURS scrubbing and bleaching and using chemicals to get her somewhat presentable... Then after a week it looked just like it does now! I was shocked! Then my Father told me that the porcelain completely wore off it when my Grandmother had it and the surface was now porous and no matter what you do it will absorb every and all stains... Now I know why they call it a slop sink!!!!! lol

    Something to try on a common beater is a coat of Medium CA and some activator then sand it back down to original material. If that's any kind if acrylic the CA will fill in the pits and scratches and bond permanently like nothing else. I've glued translucent dice together and it set nearly instantly. We had to shatter the dice to separate them. It may be better to just put a little on the bad spots and just sand those areas down, I'd try that first.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 років тому +1

      Hello Curiosity Forge! What a great tip!!! I used CA a lot before and never even thought of trying it to fill in the scratches rather then grind them out!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!

    • @drstrangefart
      @drstrangefart 6 років тому

      You're quite welcome. I've used it a LOT turning pens and have frequently used it to fill chipouts in acrylic and polyester resin. I'd say your odds are good that some medium CA would fill in a deep scratch pretty well.
