So many screwdrivers, so little time. Lol.. Came out beautiful S.C. You mentioned Alaska, I was stationed at Eielson A.F.B.. 26 mi from Fairbanks.. There for 1.5 yrs..Seen some weird things while I was there, but beautiful scenery.. BTW a beautiful job on that screwdriver...
My Grandfatherwho worked 43 years as a master carpenter and a master millwright. Taught me to always crimp the nail across the grain of the wood.enjoyed today's show as always.beautiful restoration on the Stanley screwdriver. Thanks for pleasant memories.
You are very addictive. Love your work keeping the old pride of America alive. Vintage tools have their own language. Some say they are going home with you. The rest is history.
In the U.K. we call them Clenched or Clinched nails, traditional method carpenters used. The English woodworker has a video Clinching and the Tool chest on UA-cam.
Hiswood. I love it! @357magdad is a master as well. FLITZ!!!!! Turned out very nice. Reminds me to send you a longer Stanley screwdriver you, it may be a same vintage. Great tip on the.... er tip! I'll remember that! I've ground screwdrivers wrong and usually the tip looks like \ at the end! And yes, water to keep it cool. I had several purple tipped screwdrivers when I was a youngster! Great Mosh! Don't sell yourself short on the camera holder! It works and is brilliant! My wife said "That's totally you" to me. I've been saving scraps of wood when I met you!!
Aaron- I must have screwed up a dozen screwdrivers before I found what works for me! Same with putting handles on hammers! Looks so much easier than it is! 😂👍
Hey Scoutcrafter. I have that same tripod, same deadblow hammer, same razorblades, same screwdrivers that i can restore now too. Wow! 😲⁉️my softblow hammer is a Plumb hammer with a cane tip on its face with a hole in the center of the tip. Non-maring. Formula for the handle color is amazing. P.S.: If you want us to read something, hold it in focus & give us a few seconds to read it. Tks.
Hi Scoutcrafter the screwdriver looks beautiful I have one that looks a lot like that only it says master mechanic no.9 on it it looks like the before picture only worse.
SC, there is a Company called Trusty- Cook that makes 100% of their products in the USA. They sell soft blow hammers and dead blow Ball Peens under their Trusty - Cook name and they also make them (same models) for many of the Tool Truck brands like Mac & Matco. They are 100% lifetime warranted and they are not expensive either! They are a little more than the HF Chinesium hammers but are much higher quality! I've worn out HF hammers quickly - and have had 3 Trusty Cook hammers for 4 years now and they barely have a scratch on them. They also run sales from time to time and often discount 3 hammer sets of your choice. PLEASE check them out - you won't be disappointed!
So if we’re gonna put paint on there like that do we buffalo the endcap and then tape it off and then put the paint on or do we paint and then bath because I want to and to look as shiny as the rest of it
I used plated harden ring nails on my deck in 1998 and just a few a year need a wack, but ‘deck’ plated screws on the cedar trim will twist off 😭 Thats one of the best screw drivers yet!
Nice job with the screwdriver John. Good "tip" on the screwdriver tip. I'm guilty of sanding it on the flat. Then I dress the tip back to the right thickness. By the way , thanks for brainwashing me. Now I've started polishing up my tools at work. Guys just look at it and say its just going to get scratched up again. But that's alright. I'll just do it again. Thanks John! 😊
I had a friend who worked for the city and he swore by those cheap soft blow hammers! They are guaranteed for life but he would just toss it and buy a new one because he would get a year out of it! 😃👍
BTW, some of the very best screwdrivers ever made were the VINTAGE North Bros. Yankee screwdriver line. (#90, #95 etc). The steel they used was unbelievable! and their wooden handles were also GREAT! I am a screwdriver fanatic and own Snap-on, Williams, Mac, etc. and for flat blades, my go to are my vintage Yankees.
So beautiful!! When I have end grain like that chipped up on a handle I like to saturate it in super glue. And do it in layers. Then sand it really nice and it turns out great. That way you don’t have to remove a bunch of material. But there are many ways to do it. I love the finish!! I’m going to experiment with that technique. That process my warrant it’s own video!!!! Great job man!!!!
Beautiful restoration! When I was a kid I used to build a wagons out of an orange crate, pieces off 2x4s and old roller skates. I used to hammer the nails over because they were so long and didn’t know I was giving it strength. LOL!
First of all, thank you for the tip on the HF dead blow hammer. I will get one. Secondly, let me say that I really enjoyed this video. I honestly thought you were going to screw up the butt end of that handle on the lathe. It was foolish for me to doubt you. And third, I absolutely found value in the various suggestions of technique. I will save this video and refer to it often. Thanks for all the wonderful content you produce and the inspiration you provide.
Beautiful job and nice video John! My buddy gave me a box of old screw drivers for Christmas and I’m going to try the handle trick. If mine comes 1/2 as nice as yours I’ll be happy. Thank You for sharing👍🏻
Para os fãs em ferramentas e que gostam de mante-las bem conservadas e até polidas como o amigo faz magistralmente, ver a sua perícia em restaura-las é um momento de grande prazer. Parabéns!
That is a beautiful quality screwdriver and well worth the effort to look like new. I would have been stalled by the badly pitted tip. How do you get the pitting out without making the tip too thin and thus weakening it? The job you did with the belt sander solved the problem.
Hey John, Great job on this ole screwdriver. I only wish that they still made tools that looked like that and had the quality that they use to have back in the day. No crappy plastic on this one. Later
I love the red color. And you only whiped red paint on and off, and laquered it? It is very similar to an old Mills falls screwdriver i tried to restore earlier this fall. Think il just try and do that.. (just saw the last minute of the video ;P)
Some people would argue you ruined the Stanley Hurwood by restoring it. I do not feel that way at all that’s a really nice end result. The handle finish is superbly done. Nice trick/ tip with paint .🙂
Hey Scout! What a beauty. Question -- you said you were going to thin the paint out to be more like a stain, but then the video shows you using directly from the container. Did you not end up thinning it to get that look?
Amazing job scout the screwdriver 🪛 came up great what a sweetheart 😀 I love the phone holder you should put those on amazon They wood sell like hot cakes ha ha ,god bless take care stay safe trying times 👏🇳🇿🗽🇺🇸
hi scoutcrafter, how do you treat raw metal after you strip it down? should i put a coat of shellac on? in the case of an axe, should what would be the best thing to treat the cutting edge? thanks scoutcrafter, love your videos!
If you polish and wax raw metal it will hold up inside, however if you are going to keep it in a non climate controlled area I suggest either shellac or clear coat.. For often used Items I also use my 50/50 mix of vaseline and mineral oil... That works great too!~ Thanks!
Hi Sarah- Yes! According to the patent, it was a solid shaft that has wings on it to prevent spinning inside the handle... I wonder how it was produced? Thanks!
Hey Scoutcrafter! I absolutely love how the handle turned out!! The color looked amazing. Have you done a video on how to do that sort of paint job, you mentioned thinning it out? Anyways thanks for sharing all the best!
Superb

That screwdriver looks so good. Happy Thanksgiving from Brookyln
Love the color. I will be trying that for sure!
Had to laugh when i saw your tripod iPhone holder fix, my father in law makes similar fixes, he would be proud!
That finish on the wood handle is Awesome
Very nice John. That is a beautiful screwdriver
Nice job sir...Screwdriver is just one of the master piece your restorations...
I like that paint treatment of the handle. Going to steal that! 😏

I am always looking for Hurwood screwdrivers, they are a nice surprise in a buck of rusty screwdrivers.
Wow. That turned out gorgeous!
Nicest thing i've seen in years. Great job Scoutcrafter
So if we’re gonna put paint on there like that do we buffalo the endcap and then tape it off and then put the paint on or do we paint and then bath because I want to and to look as shiny as the rest of it
Erin- Paint it then before the paint sets use some Q-Tips and paint thinner to remove the paint from the cap! 😃👍

Love that you broke out the lathe, nice trick with the paint. What a color!
First class job. Handle looks lovely!
It came out beautiful!
Absolutely gorgeous. I especially like the treatment of the handle. As you say - it looks straight from the factory - only better.
Fantastic work ScoutCrafter! I cannot believe how good it looks. Thanks for sharing this great tutorial.

That handle came out beautifully! I’m going to try that. Take care 😃👍🏼
That screwdriver sure is a sweetheart now!
I was working on a Stanley Hurwood (not a sweetheart) screwdriver last weekend with a black handle.
Holy cow! That might be the best restoration yet. Thanks for showing off that tripod. Amazing!
Absolutely luverly
That is a beautiful quality screwdriver and well worth the effort to look like new. I would have been stalled by the badly pitted tip. How do you get the pitting out without making the tip too thin and thus weakening it? The job you did with the belt sander solved the problem.
For some reason the pitting always looks deeper then it is! 😃👍
That's a gem..... Will try your paint trick on one of mines 👍🏻🛠️😀
Another great job my friend. Love the tripod, make it work with what ya have!
I have been trying to get that look on wood handles. Thank you for showing the way. And the screwdriver is awesome.
That handle came out great, never would have known that was paint.

In a pinch you can also use adhesive felt furniture pads to stick on the head of a hammer.
Good tip!!!
Does that stiking plate go through the handle? Just wondering what the metal lugs were on the side of the striking plate?
Hi Sarah- Yes! According to the patent, it was a solid shaft that has wings on it to prevent spinning inside the handle... I wonder how it was produced? Thanks!
What does a soft blow hammer do different than a rubber hammer?
Thanks in advance
Greg in Michigan
Greg- the rubber mallet (I have 3) tends to bounce off a project, the soft blow gives much more kinetic energy... You will LOVE it!!! 😃👍
Hey Scoutcrafter! I absolutely love how the handle turned out!! The color looked amazing. Have you done a video on how to do that sort of paint job, you mentioned thinning it out? Anyways thanks for sharing all the best!
