Unlike Seed, where the HD version just makes the constant style changes and art flaws even more apparent and worse because the redrawn for HD scenes are so blatantly out of place (There's a point in the *first episode* where the artstyle changes four times in a minute. That's on par with Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica's car chase in QUALITY.).
They knew how and where to allocate time and budget. There's a lot of scenes in the first season where characters are suspiciously still while exchanging dialogue. Only 2 frames needed. That's not an uncommon ahortcut, even today, I just remember finding it really obvious in 00's case, because Sunrise had also put out Code Geass a few months prior, and that felt comparatively more dynamic.

Bandai Namco had a strong framework for on-rails third-person shooter Gundam games with Encounters in Space, they could've just kept reusing that engine - preferably with further refinements - until the end of that console's life-cycle. I mean, they used it for SEED, they could've kept going into 00.
Bandai Namco (or just Bandai at the time) is a publisher and used multiple different developers for their Gundam game, even on the same platform. Like how Federation VS Zeon was actually developed by Capcom. That is why we have vastly different quality among Gundam games, each with their own engine and interpretation. It's not as simple as one team in Bandai making all gundam games.
@@cnhnx That is true. However, in this case Encounters in Space was developed by Bandai's own BEC studio - which would make the Gundam 00 DS game described here - and, yeah, they could've made them a product treadmill like other developers out there most certainly do with their main IPs. Which Gundam presumably is in Bandai's mind. Though even just looking at Yukes - of wrestling game fame - who developed the 00 PS2 game, they also made the substantially better Votoms PS2 game just a year before, so why they had to make the 00 game a Cookie Clicker is beyond me.

Wha hurts the most about the visual look of the PS2 game is that Armored Core gens 2 & 3 showed how to have good visual designs for mech games all throughout the PS2 era.
Gundam 00 for the DS reminds me of the one PlayStation 1 game that had the similar third person perspective in a 3D arena setting, except you get to go 2-player versus modes. It stands out to me cos I remember playing against my cousin who uses a Gundam I thought looked like the Strike Gundam.
There are two types of old gundam games: those who treat any projectile, including bullets and beam shots, like it's a missile. And those whose auto aim leads the shot.
If you’re talking about retro Gundam games, you gotta talk about MS Sensen 0079 for the Wii. As an FPS, it’s the final evolution in the Blue Destiny-Rise from the Ashes series. There’s a lot of content in it, since it has a Federation and a Zeon campaign, and the gameplay is pretty responsive. There’s an English patch available that’s currently a WIP, but it translates enough of the game so you have a good idea of what’s going on. Currently there’s a bug that takes you to the credits once beating the first EFF mission, but you can work around it by just playing without the patch and then saving after beating that mission. If you haven’t played it, play it. Physical copies go for, like, $10-15 US, and if you wanna play in Dolphin, you can probably get the game running at 60FPS. (It struggles on original hardware.)
DS game reminds me alot of the Artdink PSP games, lots of well done games under their belt. From the Gundam games, to the Macross one, they all have similar controls and schemes so its easy to play them all despite their JP exclusivity. Once you understand the controls and everything, and if you have a translator on hand for some of the more esoteric bits
To cleanse your pallet, you may wanna look into Gundam games that were hidden gems. For example: 'MS Saga: A New Dawn' (also known as 'Gundam: True Odyssey'). It's a hit or miss amongst fans but for what it is, it showed that effort was put into it. (Also good luck finding a copy.)
So the PS2 game plays a bit like ZOE without the fun and strategy behind it. Gotcha. Edit: For those who aren’t clear on that, ZOE and ZOE The Second Runner use a similar control scheme with the square button in that if you’re far from an enemy, the square button is a ranged attack. If you’re up close, the square button becomes your melee attack button. But those games allow you to use various sub weapons as well with the circle button after you selected one.
Kakarot, the Gunpla Navi looks interesting. I wouldn't mind a video just going over more of its content. Kind of reminds me of those Gundam catalog DVDs.
