Great video man! Just watched it because I'm starting multichannel drum recording! Helped me a lot for my snare sound. I understand it so much better now!!! Keep up the great work man🤘🤘🤘
Hey man great job on the video and great sounding snare drum and great sounding drums I do a lot of mixing stuff on my channel to so keep up the great work and keep making great music man
@@sleazydunlop1697 He could kill it completely by using another band around 430. You can hear the other part of the ring when he sweeps with the filter around that area
So damn good! I'd love to see a vid of you playing this tasty groove too! How long did it take for you to really get a feel for searching in the right places to get that sound? And have you found a typical baseline from snare to snare? Or did you discover major differences with the depths/wood/metals etc?
Hey Marc, this groove is actually Garstka playing. I wish I could groove like that haha. Those frequency ranges usually apply to most snares but there can definitely be some variability there depending on the tuning, shell, head, etc... every snare is a little bit different but in general, these are good areas to target with EQ.
@@abbdrums WOW! The mix sounds so much like your kit, I thought it was you! I missed the earlier post on you recording Matt on drums... obviously! LOL It sounds fantastic!
Yea I do that when I am actually mixing for real, but for demonstration purposes I like to show it in isolation so you can really hear what's happening.
He’s filtering around your snare drums Snatchin your smack-cracks up Tryin to shape em So y’all need ta hide ya rings And hide ya drug use cuz we talkin’ EQ’n in here
I have been sitting here wondering if my hearing has been damaged, I thought my right ear heard that the snare wasnt centered. Later in the video at 4:49 its fucking -3, you gotta be kidding me........................................................................
I don't think you can pull all the ring out with an EQ. Either muffle the drum during recording or use something like a gate or sample if it has to be done in the mix. But likely you don't want to get rid of all the ring, because it might make a very dead and boring sound. You have to consider how it fits with the rest of your mix as well. This is just controlling the amount and presence of ring with the EQ.
Those drums sound so good already without EQ! Very well tracked.
This is just got my mix fucking tighter. You're the shit dude
See how easy and fun it is when someone tweaks the sound instead of talking 99% of the time.
Great sounding drums! :)

Man your videos are great quality advice. Super valuable for any working drummer.
thanks for teaching me the true meaning of snap, crackle, and pop
Him - "I don't mean drugs."
Me - "Ite, Imma head out."
"I don't mean drugs-wise; I mean sound-wise" 🤦🏻♂️😂 Hahaha.
haha love it!
This was super informative and also awesome to see the way you approach an EQ for a snare with a lot of ring to it. Thanks for this!
Sounds dope! Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial! Although I would add to be careful about EQing the ring out. You can kill all the character and presense of the snare very easily.
facts!
This was exactly the lesson I was looking for. Thank you. How is your snare mic positioned?
good lesson mate
Quite helpful indeed sir.
-salute
Is this from Matt Garstkas Vic Firth videos? How did you get the recordings?! Did you work on the project with them?!
that's what i noticed!
Hey man great job on the video and great sounding snare drum and great sounding drums I do a lot of mixing stuff on my channel to so keep up the great work and keep making great music man
Awesome video
Austin.. you f*cking RULE, man! Nice!
does this EQing apply to both the top and bottom? or should you send both to an auxiliary track and EQ that?
Drummer is crazy wow
Great info here! Thank you!
Hi Austin! Why you start doing compression before EQ?
Good tutorial. That drummer is super sweet!
You soloed a tom tom, we can hear the real snare bleeding in the background. And the snare was still ringing even after the 570HZ cut.
Can't kill that ring completely but he took it down adequately to where it won't interrupt the mix, I would imagine.

Maybe 630?for me it still sound bad and there is no bottom mic or no snare!

Thank you very much
3:45-3:52 has a lot of meme potential.
(Also thank you for this video.)
lol yes, I am always looking for more high end crack but it's tough to find
Sounds amazing
Sounds awful.
Hey, I am wondering if you apply a snare drum gate or expander before compression/eq? Your mixes sound very clean... thanks.
I think gate should come before EQ! and then compression after
Good video, Anthony Kiedis

Hey friend, what is the name of the program you use to make your mix? Great channel...
The-First logic
have you ever tried eqing with the mic not in solo? sometimes that makes it easier to find eq moves that help the track sit in the mix
Yea I do that when I am actually mixing for real, but for demonstration purposes I like to show it in isolation so you can really hear what's happening.
My snare is ringing big time before I even start! I have tried a couple of gel dampeners, but still getting a pretty good ring...any suggestions?
Evans e-rings work like a charm
I gotta say awesome way on how to fix bad drum tuning
Damn that snare smacks a fat ass, fucking great my man.
How much compressor did you include in the mix that we listen to at the end?
Which is the software are you used bro
This is logic and looks like he’s only really using stock plugins.
thats gotta be matt gartska!!!
What kind of a microphone do you use for snare?
Personnaly i like better the WAV format than the MP3
Personally I still think there was a bit too much ring In the snare
Good thing we are now aware of exactly where it is how to get rid of it!
Once it’s in a mix with music on top, it’ll fit really nicely
Some moon gel should help
It’s called character...literately lol. Hope everyone is doing well
@@Dane_Riazer its not... its just too much ring tbh haha
hey where can we get the samples?
Should have called this video. The Ring 💍
How to download thi plugin sir🙏
how do you get the pictures of the drums on the playlist?
ST ANGER!!!! 😂
true
Can you upload the preset? Please bro.
is he salvatore ganacci with the black hair?
Lars Ulrich probably EQ d the snare to be far more ringy In st anger.
He didn't use snare wire, that didn't help either
Bruh I doubt Lars has ever mixed anything
@@ianshutt9444 he mixed cocaine with hookers
No mic below the snare?
Did I miss the 5:00 free smack & crack giveaway?
The ring was kinda cool though lol
Clarified the sound nicely, maybe brought the "drum" out a bit more as well. And now the drum "hits" you better. Good advice!

Matt, same VF Spotlight
“I don’t mean drugs” he said....
😂😂😂😂😂
matt gartska?
holy shit.. is this matt fuckin garstka playing??
how do you get rid of that toNGGGGGGG echo sound??
That's the muddiness. He finds the frequency range that is ringing, and then he cuts it.
I have been sitting here wondering if my hearing has been damaged, I thought my right ear heard that the snare wasnt centered. Later in the video at 4:49 its fucking -3, you gotta be kidding me........................................................................
Do not do the smack or the crack. This is very bad (waving finger). Stay away from the smack and crack. This is most important!
First comment great video man
Still ringing?!

Was this snare compressed?
Yea there is some dynamics processing already applied on this before the eq.
Austin Burcham alright cool thanks!
Didn't get any drugs after EQ. Unsubbed.
What's wrong with me? I don't hear any improvement. I wonder how many mics Buddy Rich used.
Old saying, cant polish a turd.
