Mixing Drums - "Vintage" Organic Style Using Plugins
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 лип 2024
- Today I open a un-touched drum tracking session and start my mix process. After this I will most likely run the sounds thru some analog processing and into ¼ tape before officially chopping and packaging the new Sample Pack.
Shout out @digitalnic0 for letting me come over and record!
Man your neighbor likes you ,
get her something like bunch of flowers with chocolates,
don't forget 🙂
Most definitely!
This channel will blow up if you keep making stuff this good.

Got something better coming!
took the words right out of my mouth!
Great video! Very solid mixing fundamentals. Since you mentioned you were looking for a compressor, my go-to for drums is the Kramer PIE Compressor from Waves, which is a model of the PYE compressors they had at Olympic Studios, and even using it very subtly, it really brings the drums forward in the mix. I also second the person who mentioned Kolin by Analog Obsession, a model of a Collins 26U-1 vari-mu, and which is great in parallel. Aside from that, Arturia makes really good compressors (their 1176 is fantastic, as is the 33609, and their dbx emulation is so smooth-I love it on overheads). The Softube Tube-Tech compressor is great. The bx_townhouse is good SSL bus compressor. The Lindell SBC is a very solid API compressor. The DPR-402 (also by Waves) is good for when you wanna mess things up.
great video! welcome back!
Can't get enough "Vintage Organic Style" specially in the box. Thank you for this very enjoyable video and inspiring video
Thank you! Will def be creating more in the future, trying different styles in and out the box.
Ayyy good to see you again!
Beautiful video, loved it.
This was great, and super informative. Also loved the friendly neighbour visit, what a legend.
man I'm thankful that I discovered you. BEAUTIFUL content!!
Man this is so wholesome and inspiring :) Thank you.
loved this.
Love your content man, subbed. Keep on rocking and recording 🎧
Fantastic walk through
Another incredible video about a sound design topic I've always had questions about. Thank you! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! This is just scratching the surface. Happy to go in more details in the future.
Beautiful✨
I’ve seen your reels on instagram so I subbed once you came up on UA-cam. Awesome to see you switch from monitors to headphones and make decisions in real time. Very helpful!
Hey welcome! Appreciate having you here.
thank you for this!
Great video, intresting sound!
Enjoyed that. Thanks!
yo! love it. Thanks for sharing!!
love this
Thx a lot Sherlock 😁
Seriously this is such good content, I really enjoy seing the whole process, including the 'deciding what I want' part :) Lots of mixing videos are usually a bit too 'straight to the point' for me, so this is perfect ! Just subbed, wish you all the success you deserve !
Cheers
yoo thanks for the vid :) as for compressors plugins on drums: i love the "kolin" compressor by analog obsession on 50% wet parallel, i think it sounds really sweet (and its free)- the vulf compressor has much more "sound", pretty intense and aggressive but i love it- very unique.
TY for the recs, I always wanted that vulf one. Mainly because I hear its semi modeled from the Roland sampler compressor which I use in sp555 form and absolutely love. But can't argue with free!
really informative, comfortable and vibey videos :) thank you
I am happy that I could capture a comfortable feeling thru video! Thank you
Great stuff.
Dope video, love seeing the process. Loved the “sauce mic”
Salute brother, more sauce percolating soon!
really fun session, thanks for showing your process. All the best to your voice box, that kind of stuff can be really scary and lonely to go through.
appreciate your kind words. it was scary and depressing. Miracle I continued to create work at all! Health is number 1
Thanks for demystifying the process, sounds dope
of course! just the beginning!
Amazing stuff man
Amazing thump science! Thank you!
You never cease to amaze me with the word play. Thump Science is about to get a curriculum!!
Love your video ❤
cool style!
very cool man! subbed!
amazing video man
Nice, thanks.
Amazing video. Saturation is the key of every good sound, I'm pretty sure. I've been using Tape by Softube for a while now, it has a truly wide range of very consistent color options and I love it.
I whole heartedly agree. You can never have enough options because they all affect sources differently!
The "weird mids" were due to phase cancellation. Notice how the bass started going away when you brought up the weird overhead.
You are right. While I tried my best to keep phase correct (visually) when tracking perhaps the mics being too close caused the issue. I will correct it before printing to tape for sure! Thank you
Thank you for putting us on game Matthew McConaughey!
most likely Matthewdict McCumberwick
great video, 💯
just became your 1k subscriber, awesome video! ◈◈◈
Woohoo! Thank you! Thats a milestone!

great video, i share the approach to music making
4:52 just in case you didn’t know, on Logic Pro you can drag up the eq curve via the left hand numbers column and physically see what frequencies are bothering you that might be hidden initially when you open up the Channel EQ :)
can you tell me what's this function's name please? i would like to learn more :) thanks!
@@s.r.b.4582 I don’t think there’s a specific name for it but just make sure that you have the analyser turned on on the Channel EQ plugin, then you’ll have the option to drag up the curve to see it in more detail if it’s hiding
interesting! thank you, will def try this out.
this. video. is. amazing. Sub'd. great content and would love more of this.
More vids coming thru indeed...!
really interesting, subed
Subbed!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
XLN'S RC-20 is fantastic at throwing some 'Dust' on the drums...a dash of crackle and fizz = uber vibes
i think he’s one of those work harder not smarter type of musicians i respect it tho 😭
@@ilyouslug yeah, that’s a good take. I’ve learned to not be overly precious when it comes to getting sounds down. Ultimately it’s about serving the song.
Oh yes trust me I got RC-20 on deck and use it often. But you know how it is, once you find yourself overusing the same tools you grow tired and reach for something new. At least I do!
This comment thread gave me an idea for a new concept. "Real life RC-20" a guide to working harder not smarter, coming soon.
hey man! great vid really, are those tips applyiable to instruments? im trying to get vintage in my daw but i don’t have any analog gear. and where do u learn this mixing stuff? also for someone who doesn’t know a lot about mixing explaining what you are hearing and doing helps a lot
Great video dude, no compression on drums takes guts lol! Try MJUC if you dont love digital comps, it's a classic, 3 models in one, great on busses, and cheap! Kiive also makes very good compressors but pricey. Don't sleep on Analog Obsession either, huge catalog 100% free, tons of vintage goodness
That looks interesting. Especially the price point. Thank you!
you look like benedict cumberbatch dressed as wes anderson
Great video! I’m curious as to what microphone you are using for your voice? I’ve seen it around and i love how it looks
This mic is a Electro-Voice 635a. Nice sm57 alt.
I like your speaking microphone.
This video is really really high quality. Could you please do a video showing your process for adding reverb on drums? Both in an artificial and “realistic” way?
Brilliant idea, and yes I will!
@@vvundertone aw dope, I’m excited for it, thanks!
🤙🏾
I found this video interesting, I also use the studer a lot on my drums however I use it on the drum bus, I heard you also say you haven’t yet to find an impressive digital compressor, wondering if you’ve tried the UAD api-2500 I find it very accurate punchy and transparent
great video!!! btw you look like a dr strange variant lol
Sounds like a modern drum kit with distortion.
I would personally leave a lot more mid range, perhaps ease up on the distortion, and experiment with some SLOW compressors - thats all they really had back in the day. Some altec style compression on the buss with a gooey slow release
Like I said, this is just a starting point. Before I send it thru a mixer, DBX compression and tape machine its more likely to get a second & third listen over. I like to take a break for a few weeks and come back fresh to get clarity. But yes one day I would love to get my hands on a ALTEC comp! the DREAM!
11:07 now we talking! 🔥🔥🔥
Right! I really want to try the hardware version!
I noticed you have a real to real tape deck, in shot.
What do you use that for or is it just for decoration?
Thanks in advance just been given one on loan…
Nothing in my studio is for decoration. If it doesn't work I send it out. Tape is my favorite medium. This is actually the first time I posted a computer centric video. I have a collection of various tape machines and use them regularly. In fact this exact session was just printed to tape yesterday. Its my way of "mastering" no more changes, the packs complete and then I put the tape on the shelf where it will out live me and hopefully be re-discovered by another young tape enthusiast such as yourself. Try tape! Tape is Truth!
Do you have any info on that Akai M7 mic? I’m not finding much!
enjoyed your video pal - it seems like you know what you are doing , or you know what you like would be a better way to put it . combine that with loving what you do and you should be good ! have fun
For sure. I am happy it translates. I been doing this for half my life and won't ever stop!
Great video like your channel! Could you make a video putting beats into tape to see the process and how to do/ what gear needed?
TY! I do have a video of doing the actual process (its thumbnail says "Mixing to Tape" I believe, but not explaining the gear needed. I will add that to the list!
@@vvundertone legend!!
Cool video! Interesting to see / hear your process.... That Arturia tape plug in seems (to me) to be one of the more useful tape emulations, I think it's based on the Mellotron?
Thank you for takin the time to watch! Yes it's based on the Mellotron and I agree, it really does its own thing not copying anyone else's vibe.
once you eq drums individually you cause phase incoherence- eq on drum bus and use parallel fx for individual tracks, and I love your vibe dude subscribed
Good to know, Now i'll never use a plugin again, for the sake of the low end!
@@vvundertone my suggestion came off as preachy/snobby sorry and you taste win plugins are great I use a lot too
@@carter3700 not preachy at all. you taught me something, thank you!
Sony 7506 and JBL 305? That's what I have. fun to be able to put the headphones and switch to monitors to hear what you are hearing
Quite the combo. Sony did their thing with these and so affordable.
kinda now sounds at least for me too much spacey/stereo to be hitting hard enough as drums. but still really interesting way to mix and give it some texture!
This is just phase 1 of the process. Next I run it thru another set of analog processes and correct any lapse of judgments from first sound. Although here it is completely mono and without reverb so I am curious how you hear it spacey and stereo? Is it the ADT that does it? Because I ended of removing that before mastering to tape haha
Why do you dislike digital compressors? I've never heard a hardware compressor, so the Plugins I have sound fine for me. Curious to know your answer. Great video!
I just think in the digital world some things don't quite stack up what they are modeled after. When I use plugin compression, something feels cartoonish and plastic about them. I feel like I can't push them too much because they start to sonically crumble. Hard to articulate, and could be because I record a lot with microphones rather than software instruments.
@@vvundertone It must be something you can only hear once you compare A and B, and it seems hard to explain. You explained quite nicely though, as I think I'm able to understand that. Gonna have to test that sometime! Thanks for the info. Have a great day.
There is something very "Napoleon Dynamite-ish" about you.
ha
Damn sherlocks alter ego
Sounded better without plugins, dude
why don't you make one exploring your (i think i've seen it at least) dbx on the rack?
cheers from Brazil...
100% I will do that. TY
Thats nice! That being said at some point looks like you re just throwing more plug in without reason or real purpose, like I got that one I like lets use it ;)
So true. For the character mic its all about throwing as much as possible at it then peeling back the layers until a combination is found that works.
1970s AG Cook
not my best work lol
Well considering this video is based on 2 bars out of about 2 hours of drumming I am still gonna say you wrong. We got some good stuff no doubt.
Beautiful
damn you're like benedict cumberbatch if he would be a producer
Don’t you check the phase first?
After the kits mic'd up I always check phase before officially recording just so I don't have to worry about it later. Despite everything visually being in phase someone did point out the overhead having issues. Even when you do your very best to maintain phase something can still happen! Its a constant battle.
I remember some mix guru always checking phase in the process. When you put plugins on, they can also change the phase?
What caused you to lose your voice? Nice vid!
me
Interesting- care to elaborate?
I got a cold, didn't seem like anything wild until the cough started. I saw some docs and all they said was be patient. To this day still a mystery, I wouldn't wish it on anyone
Benedict Cumberbatch look alike
There is some noise in the left channel.
You know when I started editing this I almost deleted it because I am a perfectionist and the noise was printed in the screen capture. (forgot to mute a channel on my Apollo which had a cord with nothing plugged in) but a note on perfectionism and how it can hold you back, I am grateful I decided to push thru otherwise I wouldn't of experienced a much needed small win this week to motivate me to continue to do UA-cam. I say all this to say its better to put out something in the universe flaws n all instead of chasing perfectionism which often leads to working in a circle.
I thought it said “mixing drugs”
maybe thats why it has such a high click thru rate haha
SHOW ME DINKYYYY
Dinky cameo COMING SOON!
that gretsch is phaaaat
Oh man, yes its a thumper alright
@@vvundertone you ever gonna drop it in a pack?? :pp
Try not high passing kicks / bass with a steep filter. The phase rotation can create some huge peaks and mess with your headroom. Shelving , even at -15 or whatever, will do the same thing wothout the danger or such intense peaks from Phase shift.
🙏🏼 thank you, will try it out!
if you reaslly want vintage, you need vintage mics
Luckily vintage mics are all I got!
I respectfully disagree, the most vintage drum sound I ever got was for a surf rock track I did using only 3 mics in a very large living room. Didn't need any tape saturation or tricks of any kind used a couple modern mics, it was all about the room and placement
Not all true
Not true imo, check out Kush audios breakdown of a drum sound
@@aryabanerjee1179 the vintage mics you’re referring to I’m assuming are FET 47’s, royer 121, u67, 421, etc.. yes these are sought after vintage mics. But by no means strictly give you a “vintage drum sound”. That sound is created by how the drummer plays the set, what kind of set it is, dampening or no dampening, the room size, mic placement, tape saturation, and much more. I would say “vintage mics” are at the last of my concerns when getting a sound
Remove fundamental from snare?... weird tbh
You know what. This sucked. Distortion plugin on saturation plugin on distortion plugin on buzzword plugin (god particle lol srsly) tape plugin distortion plugin tape plugin... honestly, its like watching a 16 year old cooking a pasta in a dorm room and pouring a glass of cheap wine. Get some perspective lol
"Your favourite color sucks! My favourite color is obviously the best." - You.
Yeah, how dare you affect your audio files until you get a result you enjoy, that's almost like mixing or something. 😂
At the end of the day its all just a matter of taste. For all I know your favorite band might be Imagine Dragons. All I am trying to do here is replicate my favorite music from the 60s and 70s which have a lot of noise, saturation, aura and color to the sound. If you prefer Nickelbacks drum sound its fine bro.
@@vvundertone You're doing well, dude. Really enjoyed this video. Keep it up.
Not so sure I agree 100% with your police work there. The original recording is bad. You used a bunch of bad dynamic mics, presumably because they look cool and have hipster mojo? All these plugins are just wrenching tortured high frequencies out of bad tracking, and compressing the hell out of them. There are easier ways to get bad drum tracks, such as a crappy drum machine plugin. This looks like a textbook case of hearing with your eyes. Entertaining video anyway - "it's the journey," right?
Mono can be deceiving. Most people attribute a good drum sound to wide crispy stereo condenser Fleetwood Mac kinda tones and I do that style too. This time I went for a purposefully grimy sound. No ones going to think "hipster mojo" when the loops get placed in a actual record, they will most likely just be listening to the words!
@@vvundertone Yeah, no dis intended in the comment, it's clear you enjoy process over product, which lifts the lid on a lot of interesting process techniques for others. I guess I'm just an old scholar because I can't get my head around using the mic that came with a 70s tape deck. 😆
Your reply just reeks of the cranky ramblings of a jaded and aged live sound engineer putting down someone else’s work to make your shortcomings feel better, to give your broken ego a little pat on the back as you spew your worthless opinion disguised as helpful feedback
@@UncleSubBass I hear you, but truthfully that Akai M7 (if thats what your referring to since it most definitely came from a tape deck) is quite amazing sounding. I have a microphone shootout video and filming it was the first time I got to hear all these mics side by side myself and if theres any one that people keep asking about over and over its that M7! Its a sleeper and sounds quite stunning. Appreciate your insight!
@@vvundertone Checked out that shootout. They all certainly look cool, and sound like the 70s. Most would be appropriate for the Principal to announce that today's lunch with be tater tots and meatloaf over the PA system at George Washington Elementary School on a rainy March day in 1981, or announcing which gate the bus to Schenectady will leave from. If the next Bjork is using them to make mind-blowing art now, godspeed to her. I 100% agree with don't let gear hold you back, and always do things differently just for the sake of making something new.
Guys, music producer content creators should just skip intros and life story, and just go straight to the material.
Majority of Music producers are not elementary anymore. I had to skip this video, im just tired of hearinn life stories instead of what the thumbnail entails
hey you not wrong. I can be a yapper.
dude your background music is sooo loud its very hard to understand you, mix your video sound first before drums... bye
