In Japan, the issue of senior poverty has become increasingly prominent amidst the backdrop of an aging society and economic challenges. As the population ages and birth rates decline, the strain on the pension system and social support mechanisms has intensified, leaving many elderly citizens vulnerable to financial insecurity.
This video delves into the complex factors contributing to senior poverty in Japan, examining the impact of the low birth rate on the sustainability of pension funds and the broader Japanese economy. We explore how rising housing, food, and utilities expenses have compounded the financial burden on seniors, making it increasingly difficult for them to make ends meet.
Drawing from recent news and government statistics, we shed light on the stark realities faced by elderly individuals in Japan, highlighting the urgent need for policy reforms and social initiatives to address this pressing issue. Join us as we delve into the challenges of senior poverty in Japan and explore potential solutions to support the well-being of the elderly population.

In a culture which supposedly respects its elders, this is especially shameful. Their government needs to make age discrimination illegal. Shame on them.

I believe in this less and less as the years go by. These Japanese elderly will be our future for a lot of us currently working individuals. Sky high costs of living makes savings or even some little investments mean nothing by the time we get old.

A pension ( or social security in the US) is never going to be enough for most people. This is why we must teach people that they must save money from the beginning of their work life. Your goal should have an everything paid off before you retire, house, auto etc. and your savings should be as much as possible. You have a choice…barely live or retire with the ability to do the things you love.

Another sad video about seniors in Japan. Many commenters here say "save, save, save" but saving is not easy in Japan. Most don't have confidence in the stock market. Savings accounts at banks and the post office pay almost zero interest. If they earned a decent salary at a company, they will get a company pension in addition to their government pension. But many Japanese today have to work in temporary positions with few such benefits. Japan has the highest ratio of national debt to GDP of any country in the world. There is not much ability to increase pensions. The government recently even cut pensions. I didn't believe my wife when she told me this but it is true. But the population dutifully reelected the government anyway.

Wrong. Your earnings are limited only if you collect Social Security before full retirement age, which for most younger seniors is age 67. If you choose to collect earlier, you are locking in a lower benefit amount and can only earn up to about $ 22,000 a year. Any earnings over that amount will reduce your social security $ 1 for every $ 2 earned. If you're low income and still have a job at 62, it's advisable to wait until you reach full retirement age to maximize your social security benefit to avoid living in poverty in your old age. Also try to use these last working years to save; you can invest in an IRA I believe until age 73.

This is the trap that many generations were told to fall into. Seriously.
In the States, we're supposed to work x# of years until it's "time" to retire and then depend on social security to take care of us.
    WRONG!!!!
If you're 55 and under, please listen up!!!
Social security was/is meant to be a backup if things didn't/ aren't going so well for you financially. It was NEVER meant for you to live cushy. And it never will.
If you want to live a decent life when you get older, SAVE NOW! Invest NOW!!! Don't plan on depending on that because it probably won't even be there when it's your time to collect. Either that, or you'll retire, find out how how little that money goes, and are forced to work until you kick the bucket.
Consider this video your wake up call.

Retirement and senior poverty rates are increasing worldwide in most non or semi-socialized countries that are considered wealthy.
Much of it is lack of responsibility and foresight in planning for retirement, sometimes also personal and family crises that derail retirement planning. Families also becoming disconnected and not wanting to help out their elderly family members.
Lots of money available for nonsensical, destructive wars, state-of-the-art sports stadiums and extravagant, luxury-living world leaders.

I'd like to understand what they did in their youth before shedding a tear... if they made bad life choices by choice then it's on them. Not having kids so spent money like no tomorrow, avoided taxes so their pension is low, etc. I can understand if they grew up in a f up country like China but Jpn not a country that oppress it citizens. Yes people have bad luck but if state gives you money to cover food and shelter... you're lucky than most.
