Explore the untold story of Nishinari Airin, Osaka City's infamous slum area, in this eye-opening documentary. The area is also called Kamagasaki. Once a hub for Japan's blue collar working-class day laborers, the area became a symbol of poverty, homelessness, anti-police riots, and class struggles. Discover the dark history of homelessness in Japan, the fierce riots of the working class and manual laborers, and the discrimination faced by the poor in mainstream society.
We delve into the struggles of the working poor in Japan and how Osaka's government efforts to gentrify the area are displacing vulnerable communities. From the intense labor riots to the ongoing battle for survival among the homeless, this documentary reveals the human cost of economic inequality and urban redevelopment.
We follow the events surrounding the closure of the Airin General Center and protests by the local working class. We study the gentrification of this impoverished neighborhood that has a long history of suffering from discrimination. We examine the history of the area from being a slum in the Edo era to being rebuilt as a center for day laborers in the post-war era of economic growth. We look at how gentrification has made the area unaffordable for the impoverished residents. We showcase the area's long history of anti-police riots.

Im pretty sure i met an ainu person once. She was very respectable.
This is interesting because in my East Asian studies classes I was under the impression that Japan as a whole was collectivist, but it appears that there are varying levels of it just like anywhere else. It’s no wonder foreigners experience much more culture shock if they were located in rural areas compared to if they lived in the city-which seems to be much more autonomous and individualistic compared to rural towns. Even in the West, rural areas tend to be much more collectivist with less expectation of personal privacy because survival traditionally meant directly relying on others more than metropolitan areas as well.
Yikes! Sounds like somebody is trippin' over a little power being a big fish in a little pond. Sad also. Hope that couple moved and found a place that would welcome them and another attempt at a restaurant. I always found people in rural Japan to be quite nice and personble, but then again never lived in rural Japan, only Tokyo...for over 20 years. But I do like the idea, just not in Fukushima. 😭😭😭 This invasion of privacy stuff sounds Na3iesque or better yet, like life in the DPRK.
Basically they are worst than the HOA
They are a weird lot in Fukui anyway! Once had a guy online threaten to beat me up because I dared to say working in Fukui was difficult due to the harsh layout of the land especially in winter. Nothing ever came of it, but I've never liked Fukui ever since!
While I condemn the bullying and harassment conducted by the rural people, I actually find the six rural rules to be not extreme and have benefits on their own, if applied in a correct manner instead of as being used a weapon of establishing unfair hierarchy and power abuse. I am not in Japan so I can't really say they're similar but I have been living in areas with similar rules albeit not formally written, therefore without bullying nor harassment nor any other kind of deliberate punishment if the rules were to be violated. As a newcomer to the area, I can say for sure that those rules are actually beneficial for the newcomer also. Once we get to know and trust each other, the community will take care of us and help us in a lots of things, including in emergency situations needed quick response, no questions asked. On the other hand, my family comes from the city and holds some more individualistic-inclined principals are more apparent compare to community-focus mindset so I can understand how some urban people can be overwhelmed by the intrusive nature of the rural community. For example, individualistic mindset may see neighbor taking care of our flower beds and lawn when we're on vacation, without being asked to, as rude, suspicious, breaching of privacy, and maybe illegal because it's not theirs and not their business. If we're willing to be more open minded to their culture though, it is actually an act of kindness and care. When we were unwell, unable to cook and unable to go clean our terrace like usual for several days, they will pry to find out why and try to help us by sharing their meals with us. Urban people and Rural people might have extremely different views on this case. I realized that having experience living in rural areas made me to be more tolerance, open-minded, and more easy see and receive kindness from other people. Of course, the areas I've been living is not the same as in Japan but hopefully can provide a different, more positive view about rural culture.
Forced integration.
Sugito Mio is the real embarassment for Japan right after that Shrine glorifying war criminals.
those rules seem fair IF they are also reciprocated by the community. Of course in a smaller community its important to become an active part of it, but what if the community itself shuns you?
Culture needs to be protected and that cannot be seen as xenophobia. Too much wokeism for me.
No wonder their population is decaying. Do they know the meaning of the word promoting ?
it seems like a urban vs village living. to live in either sphere you must adapt. and on either side, old people never change.
Japan has the highest rate of self deletion in the world. I wonder why.
All because of a few assholes in power who have the least to lose and see these towns and villages as their own personal little gardens. We're seeing the exact same thing in the US and UK now on a larger scale, with the ruling elite using foreigners and migrants as a convenient scapegoat while they funnel more money into their own pockets and get to ruin their countries at literally no cost to themselves. What is the world coming to.
Foreigners: Japanese people are so xenophobic they hate foreigners Japanese: That's insulting, we don't even like Japanese people who are not the same as us 😡
Shame on japanese !
Honestly, I think places like that deserve to become ghost towns
They will. 😂
Gentrification is a silly idea the only reason that area is popular is because of tourists and youtubers visiting there in the last 10yrs. Turning it into a more of tourist spot will just change the dynamic they can see anywhere. And the world is watching we know Japan is not helping those homeless they are just shifting them out of site and out of that space thinking they can hide them, but UA-camRS! Will just find the new spot and go there! 🤯💯💥💀🤔🫣🤫😏
Stayed in Nishinari during my solo travel in Japan. The homeless people I saw just minded their own business and didn't create problem for others.
IMO, Because they (suburbs) are getting used with homogeneous community, foreign or new culture/person feels like threat for them…
So.... shouldn't the recrnt decline in birth rate be a good thing?
Any tight community has its down side, the upside is that if your part of the group and in need there is more support. It obviously comes it at a cost. Urban life style upside is anonymity, down side is thst a hell lot of oe people die alone. Choose what you can deal with but having the best of both worlds is rarely an option.
So scary.... you have no protection from the bullies, not even police will help?... no wonder people aren't flocking to the countryside
Ah, the homeless issue in Osaka. Its a werid..... Thing. Not like Western homeless issues. Most of the homeless Japanese think that its there problem to be homeless and they shouldn't waste people money helping them. But, its not like there isn't money helping them. They just choice not to get help
Actually council estates here are not bad either. Big Soviet Bloc brutalistic buildings but quite cosy. Under 200 bucks rent per month. The issue is that they're rather prone to noise.
It never occured to me Japan would have Women's Prisons. 😂
Don't threaten me with a good time. Sounds amazing.
After seeing this, i kind of lost faith in furusato nozei. Even with tax cuts we enjoy, are overpriced goods really beneficial for the villages?
Basically the old people living there need young people to help them with their chores and maintain their town. In other words, they need young slaves.
Life is about rights, principally privacy. 'Thinking outside the box' cube Japan.
Hajime Kindaichi from The Detective Kindaichi Case Files series also often had run-ins with these cult-like rural towns. Even the Japanese paint them as eerie.
Is the government listening attentively to what people on the ground are saying?
Rural Japanese: HOW DARE THERE IS NO NEW COMER FOR US TO BULLY!!!!
My country has this similar issue and history of discrimination of the indigenous people and it is very sad.
close-minded, stubborn and corrupt old fools - let them have their small towns and when they become abandoned because no one wants to live there, they can look in the mirror and blame themselves.
This is not just Japan. I moved to a rural area where several people told me in a joking but not joking way that, “ it is every Islanders God given right to know each other’s business “ But with that said they really had a deep sense of community and helping one another out. Keep in mind that Japan also has the whole “ the mail that sticks up must be hammered down” thought process. Sometimes that’s good sometimes that’s not so good.
That's horrible. You'll either be bullied or die of boredom in rural japan.
How human and kind.
As a woman myself I can totaly understand why some of the women try to get back into prison. Almost no men, only women around you, food, healthcare, easy work, haircuts all for free.
So does the Japanese politicians think they were planted here by aliens or evolved from white people , the racism they have towards Indigenous people is a obvious hatred towards their own ancestry ; such logic is rooted in western influence . All races evolved from the Indigenous people who lived in those lands before them .
❤ 出過ぎた杭は打たれる 鉄則🎉😂
Bro, I have no idea what everyone is freaking out about. These are perfectly normal things here in the US too. Get to know your neighbors, don't be a dick, don't bring any hoodrat bullshit with you to the small town, be willing to help should things affect the town, and yeah expect less privacy in a small town because people gonna peoplewatch.
i.e. RURAL MAPHlA
Woooow whether its britain or japan it doesnt matter, things are the same. People whose ancestors tried to destroy a culture keep insisting its dead and shouldnt be remembered. Pro colonialists trying to defend their trash ancestors to the very end and finish the job they started. Whats the point?
Bigotry knows many forms but it looks the same pretty much everywhere.
"intimate relationships" sounds really sketchy
ill never understand the whole "clearly people are pretending to be this minority that we discriminate against, for priviledge!!!" like do they hear themselves
lol fuck no
