I am so blessed, my mom is 83, she still drives, spend 2 hours at gym every day, she makes her meals, goes to church, basically like she were on her 50s or 60s, the key, her lifestyle and positive attitude

You are blessed, but she is not immune to a precipitous decline. Keep a close check on her. A person her age would have to only stop eating two days in a row, or stop taking certain meds, to end up in the hospital. Their status can go from day to night in the blink of an eye if they were to slip and fall on the ground. I hope she beats all odds though.
@Man Of War I actually agree. Working and having social circle keep their mental agile too. Even better is to have an avenue for senior citizen to do real world problem solving. Mental agility is the key. And the way to keep if agile is to give it work to solve. Or something to learn.

Yes. We paid into Social Security and Medicare, and then they complain we’re too expensive as Medicare is still subtracted from our Social Security. As you age, you will decline. You will die. That’s how it’s supposed to be. But they do ware house us, just waiting for us to expire like leftover food no one wants to eat. Especially if you don’t have family.
It’s ageism
We have yet to have that global value education, that makes us humane. Not thru some morality preaching and conditioning, but meditation, serenity, gentleness. So humans grow more sensitive, creative, joyous, less selfish, emotionally and impulsively reactive, rigid minded.

I do feel grandparents are important. They provide care and guidance to grandchildren when parents are busy at work or too stressed out to do it by themselves. Even if they are disabled they provide emotional support by being there for the family. Everyone should take the extra effort until it is over for them.
But does that mean that they are to be "used" for child minding purposes? Not sure I agree
what if retiring was out of the question for those grandparents?
Not spending a little on social programs tend to end up costing a lot later.

To me, grandma meant a fun day, and wholesome fun, with stories by the fire and sitting on her knee
So, let me get this straight: We (as a world society) produce more and more per working hour. There is no global shortage of food anymore (but distribution still a problem). And suddenly we cannot afford to feed those who cannot work? Some serious flaw in that calculation!

So we youngsters are basically doomed. First, we are living through multiple economic recessions, which make it difficult to find a job and thus pay for increasingly expensive necessities. Second, as a consequence it's harder and harder for us to even consider having children since we are struggling to make ends meet for ourselves in the first place, but less babies means less workforce when we will be older. Third, because of this we will have to work for longer than our parents and grandparents ever had, probably having very meagre pensions after that and anyway we won't be able to fully explore other aspects of life because by then we will be too old. In the meantime, we are living in a world where the elderly already make up a huge portion of the population, whose pension benefits they received in the 80s and 90s when conditions were very different from now, but still they remain generally unchanged and so we have to 'break our backs' to maintain the boomers that got used to pre-crisis retirement schemes. Moreover, an ageing population tends to make a country more conservative as at least in a democracy the majority holds the power, so the elderly are a very powerful voice that hinders progress and moves politics to the right. The boomers won't have to face the consequences of their own blindness anyway, and they will vote for anyone who promises to keep their current benefits there. This is the world a 20 years old person lives in today, while the future looks darker and darker if we add the environmental issues and probable conflicts that are bound to occur. Have fun guys

I may be young and know absolutely nothing, but one thing I know is that you can't have sky high cost of living and expect people to sacrifice financial stability just to have future workers. I think places like Japan try to put these small incentives, but never actually properly tackle overworking, cost of living because those reasons are exactly why they are wealthy in the first place.
Well, how do you tackle cost of living in a country that has almost zero natural resources and needs to import them? Its more difficult than you think.

A shorter working week will enable some people to continue their employment. Work until you drop is also not a solution. If governments were made to be transparent and accountable they would not be misappropriating the taxes workers pay. We know we should be able to work a shorter week, raise our children and eventually retire but with the present level of dishonesty and greed blatantly exercised by our politicians, we will not be able to exercise our rights. We must have legislation to ensure honest government!

@@chamade166 I live in Germany and it is seemingly better here. Although old people sent to care homes are normal here but the care homes are mostly owned by the government. And they have best facilities like medical and healthcare professionals, therapists, etc. Mostly old people who need extreme care are sent there. I know many old people who do live in big mansions and their families visit them often.
I am not sure how bad is it in US.

Nursing homes running for profit should be illegal. I know because i work for one and in private care these huge grants from the Government intended to increase the current poor wages and training for staff to benefit care of the elderly….all went to CEO’s and not to the nurses or carers or back to the resident or into their care. These companies still don’t replace staff when one calls to cancel their shift. They still cut corners with convenient mistakes like not ordering night pads ….regularly. The CEO ‘s always have Their time off approved when they want it, the rest of us have to apply months in advance and even then it may not be approved and we are left with no time off working up to the point of burnout and unbelievably beyond burnout until we ourselves get sick.
Age at home if you can, look into Aged care packages and go with a not for profit organisation. It is much better for you.
same with child care centers. They should all be nonprofits. I worked at child care centers where the families were paying over a thousand a month, but employees were making pretty much minimum wage. I know there are additional costs of rent, insurance, etc. but I can’t help thinking the owners pocketed a lot.

We as a society SHOULD want to take care of our elderly, BUT we think of them as burdens instead.
They're a burden "because" we want to help them, and there's a cost to helping someone. If we didn't care about them, they wouldn't be much of a burden.
Part of the solution should be to allow those who can save for their own retirement to do so on their own, and help only those who couldn't save or those in the very last years of life.

The burden should never be put on a child that they were brought into this world just to look after their parents. Disgusting.
That's ridiculous logic. Nobody is saying that children should be purely brought into this world as old age carers, there will always be emotional reasons for wanting children. What does need to happen is that net birth rates rise so we can grow a younger workforce that produces the wealth necessary to fund large government social care systems. Ultimately if that doesn't happen, then young people bear the cost as they either have to take care of their parents/grandparents anyway or face higher levels of taxation on an individual level to reflect a reduced tax base.

In history these old people as the young now do would have produced economic value and consumed with their earnings in different ways (property, assets, experiences, buying food, buying gifts, investing, etc) or as seems your only worry ‘’fighting in a war’
Now they are a burden because they consume more in less economically contributing ways (more medication, more care) these can help create jobs in the care sector health sector ageing leisure sectors, but the contribution to economic growth is lower.
They also give less in terms of tax (because of government regulations) they spend less actively (in some cases costs are passed onto their children which lowers their overall net contribution), in most cases it’s the government paying for them.
You may have some emotional reasoning to why they aren’t a burden but the bottom line is THEY ARE A BURDEN in a purely economical context upon which the economists covers, so when they are referring to burden they mean burden on the economy which is statistical truth and can and has been proven by numerous scholars and economists with years of study and experience.

the old did fail their society by not having enough children to replace their generation. I believe having kids should be a duty, like taxes. It’s a choice of course, I draw the line when it comes to coercion always but it should be heavily encouraged.
This is the new mantra they are pushing on my demographic (generation X )."If you could all just work until you die and not claim the pension you worked hard for that would be great". After having supported both the younger and older generations in my country for the last 20 years I intend to retire in my late 50s and I have made sure I have the finances to do so, but unlike other generations, I won't be squandering my pensions and finances on overpriced holidays, extortionate golf club fees and over specked Range Rovers, etc. Plus with the increase in both automation and AI technology just what jobs do they think will be left?
In Africa we take care of our elderly as extended families, it's a respectful honor 🙏 and give back to take care of our grandparents we don't put them in nursing homes we don't have them since it's culturally disrespectful for strangers to see the nakedness of your grandparents

This is also how we do in Asia. Save for our own retirement, not relying on handouts from government, and then on families. The EU support model appears to rely on tax dollars instead of savings.

I’m 64 years old. I worked as a teacher and counselor. I have a pension, social security and savings. I pay heavy taxes. I have no debt. I own my home and vehicles. My husband and I are helping raise my grandchildren. My husband and me have travelled the world.

Growing population must be controlled by making control over excessive birth rate, and not by raising questions about the old & aged people.
And the one who is actually response for the majority of problems related to population & poverty is none other than the government of respective nations.

Don't give ideas to those in control. Many of us aren't healthy and energetic enough to by 65 or even before, and not necessarily due to bad lifestyle. If you did heavy work such as building which affected your back and joints you would know.
To those in control the word 'encourage' means 'force'.
You can start a business if you want to. But if you on government,just retire already, give the position to other people that are more productive.
I am so happy to live in a country (Indonesia) where elders are treated by the family and do not directly cost the state... Pls take care of ur parents wherever and whenever they are...coz one of the scariest moments in life is to be old and not able to do anything.

I am 100% going to take care of my mom. As an only child, tho, taking care of my mom and help my husband (also an only child) take care of his parents , it makes it even harder to have kids.
Edit- and Chris is right. My husband does his best, but my in laws definitely expect more out of me than of their own son. More demanding. We're all still relatively young, but it's already happened before.

They forget all the years of work the aging population has done in addition to all the volunteer and work hours they put in after "retirement" at 65. I know people who are still working and volunteering into their 80s. In Japan the elderly are doing quite a lot of work due to the fact that their children aren't having children themselves. There are many people much younger with illnesses, substance abuse issues, etc. Everyone costs money at some point. You can't expect everyone to be able to be 100% productive all the time.

When they say the elderly are a burden, remember when you were little you were taken care of by these same people considered a burden because they are old. In my country, we don't have a large elderly population. In fact, most of our population is of working age. But sadly, there are only a few positions occupied by the elderly who are refusing to pass the torch to the next generation. Ironic.
Which country is that? And what happens to the elderly there then? And why do you not want them to work anymore? Then you will have to support them financially! What is your logic here?
It is unfortunate. These elderly are holding society back. They think slow, and move slower with their old, dated ideas and beliefs. They are easily the most selfish group.
I've always felt that the vast experience and wisdom of most retirees is largely wasted. Retirement is structured as if people "expire" at a particular age. This has resulted in a huge missed opportunity. Building structures/ systems that allow people continue to contribute beyond traditional retirement is very beneficial. For the economy, the society and themselves.
There is also the opportunity to intentionally cultivate intergenerational exchange which can have many immeasurable benefits!
Traditional cultures do value the elders and include them in the society. But then again, traditionally, people are not robots, you know...
@@eeaotly I agree that traditional culture does value more. Sadly most of that is fading away with urbanization and social systems becoming more govt reliant rather than family or community reliant.

Many retired people are invaluable to society and communities. So many things are run by these magnificent human beings and attended by them. Always make them sound like a burden. They care for grandkids too. Honestly

On one hand we talk about necessities of being flexible and setting up social care system and older people feeling useful etc…on the other hand we have society where everyone is pressured to look young via Botox, surgeries etc …. ageing is something that is unavoidable but it is not acceptable by the society …perhaps once everyone accept the fact that they will grow old, that it’s like death nobody can avoid it…then we will be in the place to come up with the great solution on how to live with it…

Ageing should be celebrated. We all are going to turn 60 or 65 someday.
I guess if we can give more flexibility to ageing people and retain them into workforce for long time, then it's win win for both society, individual and economics.

Amazing video, I'm kind of scared I'm going to have to cover a lot of the burden throughout my working life as a 22 year old. But initiatives like Buurtzorg and technological innovation give me hope. People deserve rest after working for ~45 years
You wouldn’t have to worry if the government did their jobs correctly.
That's why traditionally throughout history is to save for your own retirement, do not depend on others especially governments of future... in 20-30 years time. And also family ties and support structure.

Children are extremely expensive. Unlike older people, few are self-supporting. In the 1960s, it was commonplace for families to have 3 or more children and for the mother to stay home and provide domestic services. In my family there was one worker/taxpayer to five dependents. This video talks about the ratio of workers to the elderly, completely ignoring the dependency of children. If we have fewer dependent children and mothers, then we can support more elderly.
Actually, children are not that expensive. What has changed is our priorities on what we spend money on. Children don't need expensive vacation, they are just as happy to go on a camping trip in your area. Children don't need the newest, trendiest clothes. They are fine wesring secondhand or hand-me-down-clothes. Need very little to thrive and most of it can easily be provided by most people in western society. However, the psrents are usually not willing to sort out their priorities. They still want to buy the newest stuff and go only expensive holidays by plane. They could use that money easily to sustain another child. What has changed is the mindset of the people. They are unwilling to make sacrifices. And children are often seen as a reliability instead of being a blessing... that's where the issues begin... 🤔🤷🏼♀️🤨

@@sagebay2803 It depends where you live. I live in Switzerland. The dental and health care is covered by mandatory health policy that every citizen has to have. For me as a parent costs between $50-$100 each month for each child. Which is quite cheap considering that the average annual income in my country is around $ 50'000 - $ 70'000 per person. So even by Swiss standards (we havd quite high expenses) it is affordable to have proper health care for ill children🤔🤷🏼♀️ That might not be the case in the U.S., but it certainly is the case for most European country...😉
Sorry but kids are not going to want to wear second hand clothes when they reach a certain age. Once they are at school they are up against their peers and its a different story

I remember that I never had trendy clothes, but it also didn't hurt to learn to have thick skin and not bekng bothered by other kids comments about my clothes. Once I turned 15, I started to do some small jobs, like helping our neighbour with gardening. The money I received from those little jobs I then used to buy clothes and things I wanted. I quickly learned though that it was better to save money for a laptop than to spend it on fancy brands that I might wear for once year before it was out of fashion. I thankful that through my circumstances I learned the value of money and the importance of setting priorities. So in my opinion: No. Kids don't "need" trendy clothes. It's the parents that want fancy clothes for their child so the child doesn't have to deal with mean comments. But it would be valuable for kids to learn that, esp. if you watch the kids today who are so easily offended by any small comment about looks or a different opinion... Young people need to be supported to have children at replacement level, so that we are neither dealing with overpopulation nor a shrinking youth. Education and healthcare access reduce the birth rate to fewer children, while economic security and affordable childcare empower people to have children at all. There has got to be a serious system in place to ensure those things.
We also have to understand how we are chronically living above our means as a nation. Multigenerational homes, with care going to the elderly and grandparents babysitting children, used to be the norm. Now everyone wants their own household. There is a stigma when you live with your parents. But that costs money. Childcare and extra homes, facilities, and specialized labor cost *money*.
And add in the cost of North American land development policies that result in infrastructure-heavy cities where the productivity (city tax revenue per square area) is not nearly enough to pay for the maintenance of this terrible, expensive, car-centric sprawl and the costs are out of control. And that’s before we even go into the added expense of nearly everyone having to have their own car to get by in their lives. And the unnecessary building of honestly huge average homes by the global standard, which costs us even more money. And by virtue of having basically engineered away daily exercise in this car-infested landscape we see our weights going up, driving up our medical costs even among the young. And because medicine has a wildly unnecessary middleman in the form of huge profit-making insurance companies we pay even more.
I’m speaking about my home country here, the US. We are pathologically incompetent to govern ourselves, and have now arrived at a financially (and ecologically) unsustainable lifestyle for which we have no one else to blame but ourselves. There has been a total lack of foresight here for decades now. No wonder there isn’t money for the elderly. Like, we completely don’t know how to plan for the future. The lack of frugality, planning, and community-mindedness is breathtaking. And unfortunately, “you have to give things up and live differently” will never be a politically viable message.

It wasn’t that long ago that people in the US wanted to have leaders who were smarter than they were. People competent to deal with the complex problems of running a large country. Now we prefer politicians we can look down on, the stupider the better. If they can barely read, and have the vocabulary of a five year old, people love them. As an aging employee, I would like to work more flexible, e.g., 3 days a week or 5 hours every day, on the other hand, employers are driven by profit and competition, so even they want more labor forces, they may unlikely allow aged employees to work part time. So there is a gap between what employees want and what employers want. Thinking of the solutions, do economists have any suggestions? Can governments make any policy to resolve the gap somehow?
Maybe governments can give employers the option to abide by the law that allows older employees to work part-time. By abiding by this law, employers can get tax reduction in return. So the economic balance will equivalence, both of them can get benefit of it. Therefore, this is a real win-win situation. I really hope they can add some laws to the Labor Law. @@dianeandries1331 Actually it is reverse of what he suggests. It is those in their 50s cannot be exploited easily. They simply choose not to work. That is why the companies lack competent managers. The competent 50+ people rather invest their time and money elsewhere. Massive structural reform will be needed to integrate the 50+. At moment, the push for such a reform is just not enough. One can always take competent immigrants for example.

Some countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark have found robust solutions to these challenges. Increasing life-long savings through mandatory pension schemes and defeering social security pensions to automatically match the ageing population (thinks is mean living age minus 15 years in both Denmark and the Netherlands goes a very long way in bridging the gap). Btw something now adopted by many European countries. Denmark currently has a gigantic Government surplus "hidden" as deferred pension taxes. OECD countries are fabulously rich. Just takes long-term political thinking and the ability of politicians not to dive into the collective saving pools. The growth of health care robotics will also help a lot.

I think there is an environmental upside to this decline in population in the rich/developed nations. Consumption is much higher in these nations that developing countries which has a greater impact on the environment. With a smaller population, there should be a small carbon footprint.
Except that the rich developed nations keep importing the progeny of the heavy breeders in undeveloped countries. Europe has taken on more than a million since 2015 and they show no signs of returning. The asylum seekers want to increase their consumption of the earth's resources, to increase their waste and to increase the world's carbon footprint. That is what "seeking a better life"means.

Maybe we should change our view of economics and what we put our value in...like maybe humanity is more important than GDP.
It needs to be made advantageous for people to have children so our societies don’t reach a crisis point but the solutions to this will vary among countries. For some it is simply financial barriers that keep them from having children, others social and cultural barriers.
Different solutions can be more acceptable in one region than in another such as immigration which for example might be more acceptable in Canada or America than in China or the EU. At this point China, Japan, and Western Europe are among the fastest aging populations but the future it uncertain and this could change
you can't incentivize having children. One of the major reasons for aging population is that people just don't see a point in procreating. People wanna be free of responsibilities. The only realistic solution is to accept more immigrants but even that will get more and more difficult as the developing countries grow. One other solution could be a dependency on robotics but either way the age of prosperity for west will soon be a relic of past. In a century or so Africa will most probably outgrow all the other countries in terms of economy.
@@vp5373 you can incentivize having children! If you switch from a pay as you go pension system: the Young generation Will pay for your pension regardless of the fact if you have children. To an if you made the new generation (literally having children) you can have a pay as you go pension and if you don't have children than you pay for your own pension. You'll see a baby boom because alot of people do not save for their pensions and having children becomes your pension. So you can incentivize having children by making them central to your financial future. No children would mean a less finanially viable retirement. Before you make a moral argument against this let me remind you this is already the case if you live in the west: pay as you go pensions. They rely on younger generations being made. My solution Just makes this more clear for people who might not get that if we don't have kids our financial future is at risk.

I had honestly never realized that as we age, we cost our government more. I can see how the younger people working now pays into the Medicare system and in the end supports the older generation. This I understand. I live in the US and I paid into the Social Security system during my entire working years. Now I am taking MY money out (Medicare.) I also have BCBS insurance to cover what Medicare does not cover. Many of us volunteer, some of us go to the wellness center and work out and have a social life. Some of us take care of an older more ill spouse. I'm age 71, I rescued a dog that was slated for euthanasia, and she keeps me active walking her, playing with her and more. My husband is age 77 and he works three days a week at a Big Box store which gives him exercise and oxygen to his brain and gives us some extra income to pay for the out- of-pocket things we need like; dental care, eye exams, eye glasses, and more.

The world haven't declined but overpopulated at an unsustainable level. The result is that opportunities are declining as the world is returning to normal. What the economist think about population is that it should triple each decade because each person is a consumer of products.
When someone see all the negative numbers without including the positive, without adding that people are drawn into the cities they bias that villages population declined but those people didn't vanish out of thin air. They moved to cities.
In norway the government tried to stop the urbanization to preserve villages and it had at best a 20 years stalling. If the government hadn't they would had the cash to improve cities. For that reason trying to prevent it is just costing without any reward.
If people getting older it creates new jobs in new sectors. But the companies want heavy industries who are able to pump out and outperform the market. Outperformance increase investors and means the company owners get increased revenues and the main key is having a manpower who outperform seniors.

Costs, costs,costs. Think about how many years the elderly have contributed to make society prosperous. The government cuts on pensions. I call it legal crime towards the elderly. Another point I want to make is that retirement at an age of 65 is great to enjoy some me time in the form you want to spend the rest of your life and not to keep them working till 70.

The problem is that aging populations are vulnerable - COVID-19 makes this obvious.
A biologically old population that is increasingly reliant on younger people will lead to collapse of our healthcare systems + economy. If we start funding healthy longevity science, we might have a way out of this. If you've been paying attention to aging biology research it's obvious that we can increase human healthspans, keeping people free from disease and decline as we age. Now we just need to work out how to get it working in humans.

One thing that always gets left out of these discussions is the enormous amount of unpaid work undertaken by the elderly. Looking after grandchildren is an obvious and critical part of this. But the clubs and associations all across France that offer sport and education to youngsters also depend on retirees. This is “economic potential” it just doesn’t appear in the statistics
I will not be able to retire. I will have to work part time even into old age and to death. And that may not happen due to ageism. If you do not work you can not survive. Pensions are costly and are depleting by inflation. Not everyone wants to work a 40 hour week forever. Community nurses is a great way to get rid of large hospitals and under-staffing due to low budgets.
They must bring in care givers from other countries. This has already happened in most rich countries.
These workers are exploited, underpaid and given no residence security. Here in UK they must pay to be able to request leave to remain and even if they work in the NHS they have to pay thousands of pounds per year for their own healthcare. What's needed is proper immigration policies, but racism and xenophobia makes that an unpopular election ticket.

Fix society in western countries. Notice how this issue isn’t even thought about in the Middle East and North Africa? In the west kids are taught to go to school, once ur 18 leave the house, go to college and get into debt. Work for 50 years to pay back debt, have 1 child or no children, and forget about ur parents and visit them once or twice a year. Once they’re old enough send them to retirement homes and never visit them again until they die alone and then have a funeral. Cycle continues.
