More than a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the plan during his Independence Day address of 2020, the Union Cabinet Wednesday passed a proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years - the same as men.
Sources told The Indian Express that following the Cabinet’s approval, the Government will introduce an amendment to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and consequently bring amendments to the Special Marriage Act and personal laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
Wednesday’s clearance is based on recommendations submitted to Niti Aayog in December 2020 by the Centre’s task force, headed by Jaya Jaitly, which was constituted to examine “matters pertaining to age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering MMR (Maternal Mortality Rate), improvement of nutritional levels and related issues”.

Existing 18 years law is enough to prevent child marriages. This law amounts to interference in individual freedom. If a girl wants to marry after 18 years with knowledge of consequences , why govt should prevent her ? Regarding health issues , late marriages and late deliveries have a number of health issues for women and new born . These are explained by gynachologists in many articles. Can govt enforce women to marry before 25 years on this ground ?

18 limit for girls is appropriate. In India still we are in a custum of treating it as a responsibility of parents to perform the marriage of daughters , in majority cases, as early as possible by observing the age limit of 18. If it is increased ,it is fraught with many difficulties, like parents old age, parents health conditions, Parents retirement from active service, parents search for arranged marriages, girls education and job conditions etc etc. which decide the girl's marriage performance by parents. So in many cases they want to perform the marriage after finding good match. And they want to perform the marrage before they die !!! By increasing this age it extends the the task (yes it is a task that 99% parents face and still we have not reached the stage of ' take it easy ' in this respect) for 3 more years.

Now a days most of girls getting puberty at 12 to 14 years of age.the ensuing enhansing age of marriage for girls from18 to21 years of age. It is good for rich and financially welloff people but not good for poor and downtrodden communities.more over it will be a tough and challenge task for law implementing officers and agencies. Further i am of view that get opinion of polticians and officers working in agency areas of country about feasibility of implimenting new laws.
