It is crystal clear that Angelina is a musical genius. Her interpretations, accents, tones, pace, and overall understanding of any song, hers, or someone elses.....are unmatched. This is not subjective, its absolute.

And yes her heart is in jazz. She seems know the direction she is taking and we are along for the wondrous ride. All that said I would not say Angelina is imitating anyone. Inspired by many, sure.

@@anthony7400, let's call a spade a spade; you are a fool if you cannot see that Angelina's gift and point of departure is her ability to imitate great Black singers - by her own admission since she started with Jazz. Of course, she has no limit and can imitate anyone, but the catalyst for her journey was her enthrallment with Black Jazz singers, which can be heard in her style still today since one always moves beyond one's point of departure. QED
Adele is top tier, and for me Angelina puts the emotions that make you feel every phrase. Nobody better on the planet, and Thank you Adele for writing amazing songs, that Angelina can sing respectful of the artists she sings for. A win win for music lovers. Excellent review.

I dearly love Adele. Angelina Jordan's version somehow speaks more directly to me. It almost makes Adele's version seem clinical, while Angelina captures the wistful ache of the lyrics much more emotionally. No surprise really. She proved, at 7, that she was a song stylist to be reckoned with.

The more you listen to Angelina the more you’ll see that aside from her unique vocal abilities, she always interprets lyrics so clearly even while giving us vocal dynamics. She delivers songs humbly and vulnerably-and we feel the meaning of the lyrics. And she does that across five or six genres. Angelina is the best singer I’ve ever heard.
Angelina is the barefooted Queen of Soul with a Thousand Voices! She weaves musical tapestries in all colors of the rainbow with her beguiling voice! Her musical artistry is second to none and it not something that can be taught. Soul + Music in perfect harmony!

A good example of Angelina's higher register is her 2/14/22 release "My Funny Valentine". Her maturing voice shines with new and delicate colors. Her characteristic phrasing,
vibrato and complex textures are wonderfully enhanced. IMHO the best rendition I've heard in my last 50 years.

The biggest difference to me is the vulnerability Angelina's version portrays. She invokes the desire to actually "go easy" on her because she is vulnerable but still trying to do the right thing. I don't get that from Adele, who seems to be past that and moving on, while not really asking for anything. I really enjoyed this comparison and that surprised me. I don't usually like to make comparisons b/c they are so subjective. This one seemed to have a more objective valuation based on technique and style choices.

I've made this comment before, but I find it amazing that Angelina released this video just 10 days after Adele released the track. 10 days to understand the song, develop her arrangement, work with Rob on the accompaniment, record, edit, and release this thing of beauty. During the school year. Out of this world. Think you'll like her My Funny Valentine released this last Valentine's Day.

Angelina is no different; she is an amalgamation of Billie, Dinah, Frank, Ella, Etta, Elvis, Amy, Adele, Whitney, et.al., and that special Angelina ingredient, which gives us the one and only Angelina Jordan. She is certainly unique, yet has recognizable components of all that have influenced her---the girl with a 1000 voices. But there are other influences that make her special and that have created a person who is kind, humble, brave, giving, loving, and who wants to make the world a better place. I feel very privileged to have her in my life.

What a wonderfully detailed comparative analysis. For me it is hands down Angelina who is better. I made a mashup of the two, and listening to them both over and over as I edited it it was very clear to me that Angelina had a richer, more varied and textured sound, but it was hard to put into words exactly what she was doing to achieve that. You have done so very, very well; thank you. One thing I would add is that Angelina often puts in little breaks, turning one syllable into two, and that's another bit of variation she gives to the song. You can really see how she makes use of her jazz roots.

I'm no professional or armature when it comes to music. What I can say is that if both tracks were available on the radio, I would switch to Angelina's cover. Her voice draws me in.
Adele's video is very emotional, but her radio version is very inconsistent and lacks that emotional punch.

OMG! This was the best break-down of Angelina's vocals I have ever seen. The easiest subscription ever :-) In my opinion there has never been a shred of a doubt as to which voice I like more between the two. Angelina all day. I even liked Angelina's TikTok cover of this song better than the original, and she dropped that one just in a matter of HOURS after Adele dropped her single. That shows me (us? ) what of an incredible musical genius Angelina really is.

I think you would LOVE to her her new rendition of "My Funny Valentine", which she dropped on Valentine's Day February 10th. Angelina turned 16 on January 10th, so she had probably just turned 16 at the time of recording. I say NEW rendition because she also made a rendition exactly 6 years earlier, at age 10. Listening to the two back to back shows you perfectly how she has developed. You can hear what she wanted to do at age 10, that her voice was just not yet capable of, but that she flawlessly and apparently effortlessly pulled off at age 16. I have been following Angelina since she won Norway's Got Talent in 2014, at the age of 7-8, and I think that this is the most beautiful she has ever done. I would die to hear what you think of it, and I will give you both links here, both to her 10 & 16 year old versions.

Let me preface my following comments by saying that comparing artists is not my cup of tea. Each artist performs with their distinct style and I may enjoy listening to one more than another. In this case, when asked which version do I enjoy the most, Angelina, hands down. You explained why to me but my opinion was based on the emotion Angelina added to the song. I was thrilled to hear your expert analysis of the differences in their styles.
Adele is what, 29?, and is respected as perhaps the most famous singer in the world. And Angelina certainly respects her (particularly the music she writes!). Angelina is 16 now and in the industry she already has been given the unofficial label as a "singer's singer." Quite a compliment. And, Andreas (btw my next door neighbors name!), Angelina hasn't been officially marketed to the world yet (family decision) because she continues with her education for a while longer and, believe it or not, enjoy life as a teenage girl until the wraps are taken off and her career goes full blast.

Yes, I totally agree. Adele is an accomplished pop singer and writes wonderful songs, (for Angelina to sing). I think Angelina has a much larger tool box of technical ability than Adele's, which enhances her performances from Adele's (and anyone else's) great performance to Angelina's flawless and spectacular performance....IMHO ❤🌹
Andreas. You give a very enlightening and deep analysis of this performance. Each point in the piece that you stop and analyze is well chosen and the comparisons with Adele are very informative. I also find a great deal of craftsmanship in splicing in the examples from Adele's version, and there is very good crafsmanship overall. Adele is her favourite Artist, she told during her Christmas online show and therefore did a lot of Adele Covers. But she studied nearly 80 famous artist over the years and is able to add so much beautiful adds to every song, so it's a pleasure to listen to her again and again without boring.💓💕💃🎹

Yes! With respect to Adel, I found Angelina's version of " Easy On Me " better than Adel's! More meaningful, more deeper, more softer but darker, more effective and with much much better interpretation of the lyric. In conclusion, Angelina's voice is one of kind and her singing ability and talent is beyond imagination!

Her grandmother. Her muse. A fabulous artist in her own right. Jazz lover and started Angelina listening to it from a tiny infant. Angelina is considered a music savant. Her grandmother was also a child savant .. she was and still is an amazing painter. The outfit Angelina wore on AGT to sing Bohemian Rhapsody was made up of fabric made out of one of her grandmother's painting. She also taught Angelina to sew, by the way and she makes a lot of her clothes. Her grandmother just recently had to have an operation and it went ok .. but we got to see the fear in Angelina and the grief and passion she felt for her grandmother .. so this little piece before the song made us all cry. She is ok.

In answer to your question, that was her grandmother, Mery Zamani, with her in the first part of the video. They have a very special relationship. As good as this cover is, Angelina's latest (and 3rd) cover of "My Funny Valentine" shows even further development as an artist and is a stunning master class in jazz singing. The audio is obviously studio audio, but it's an IG upload with a self-made video in which she is not singing. @@andreasgrussl BTW, in an analysis of an earlier song, another vocal coach studied her vibrato and noted that Angelina covered three semi-tones when most vibratos usually only vary one semi-tone. I don't have either a sufficiently discriminating ear or the equipment to check out her vibrato in other songs, but found this observation to be quite interesting.

I've seen a video of Angelina getting ready for this performance and Mery Zamani is seen making adjustments to Angelina's costume. So they still collaborate in making her outfits.

You've already indicated this, but I also feel that, ironically, Angelina expressed the meaning of the song better than Adele. The central line of the song is obviously "so go easy on me", which, in respect of those words, Angelina undoubtedly sang in a much lighter tone than Adele did. It's almost like Angelina "went easy" on her own vocal cords there in order to express that line; I like that idea/interpretation of hers. Without a doubt Angelina always looks for ways how to express every single word in a song, which is probably the most essential thing for being a vocalist and artist.
Angelina , better than the original.
It's only my personal observation but I separate the two of them by
my belief that one is a no-jazz singer of greatness, and the other a
true jazz specialist. I don't believe it's possible for a non-jazz singer
to ever bring forth as much emotional penetration to the human soul
as Angelina does. Her 'vocal chameleon' ability allows her to capture
the essence of Adele's voice, but then she goes into her jazz roots to
Billie Holiday, where she brings forth the 'breathy', 'whisper like', sensual
inflections that Billie was famous for. Not satisfied yet, Angelina now goes
to the furthest, opposite end of the jazz spectrum where Amy Winehouse
reigned as the most uniquely different jazz singer of all time. Here, she
adopts the 'slurring' of words (for added effect), as well as Amy's style of

What a great technical analysis of what it is that Angelina does to capture everyone’s heart with her singing. I’ve viewed many other reactions to this and other Angelina songs, but yours is the best I’ve seen so far, thank you for that.
My summary of this song is Adele is a master to conceive and write the song, but Angelina is a genius at how to interpret it.
As I’m no expert all I can say is Angelina’s voice speaks to me personally, I feel it not just hear it, it’s such a warm and intimate experience and most welcoming, like an old friend. I get the feeling she’s not deliberately doing all those things you mentioned, she just intuitively knows what to do, when and for what effect.
In my opinion she is destined to become possibly the greatest female vocalist of all time, not because she’s technically superior, but because she conveys such emotion and touches your soul with her voice, it’s almost spiritual in nature.
Wet eyes are hard to avoid when listening to her, and that’s a common viewpoint so all those thousands of people can’t be wrong!
An exceptional artist of that there is no doubt!
Was going to suggest you react to Morrisette Amon as she is one of a very few female singers who manages to get a similar reaction from me as Angelina does with her voice, and Dimash but I see you beat me to it from your playlist!

I love the way uou break it down and compare the two style, most informatively and I love Angelina's style better because of how she paints the song with her love of jazz and with this style, it really brings life to any song, making the song richer and deeper, so you drift away, as you listen to her sing, into the song as it become part of you 🙏

Sweet reaction, thanks..Yes it is Angelina's grandma, Mery, who as of this filming was recovering from cancer surgery. I appreciated Angelina showing us that she was doing well. The picture of them together is so emblematic of who Angelina is. Check out her original "Million Miles" written as an homage to Mery's husband
shortly after he died. IMHO Angelina's masterpiece, so far, is "I'm Still Holding Out For You". The release of this piece is shrouded in mystery, but its
impact as a soul, blues, pop ballad will become immense. Oh yes, she was 10 years old when it was recorded, and I dare you to keep your eyes closed
through your first hearing.

Outstanding reaction/comments and analysis Andreas, so very well done. One of the very best I have seen. I like Adele and think she is a wonderful "singer" and she wrote a very nice song that when she sings it, it's just a song. Angelina is a master class vocalist in my opinion and that of other vocal coaches and just brings so much more to the interpretation of this song to the listener. Much more feeling and emotion when she performs this song. She did the same thing with Adele's "All I Ask", took it to another level and so much better than the original. That may have been the best analysis of a singer I've ever heard. I thought both versions were beautiful, but I thought tha Angelina's fit the emotional point of the song better than Adele's version, and your analysis showed me step by step why. I've always thought that Angelina's genius is in adeptly using precisely which of her incredibly diverse palette of vocal tools in the precisely right way at the precisely right moment to give the exact emotional point of the song powerfully and effortlessly, and your analysis helped me see her doing that in this performance.

@@andreasgrussl I second My Time's suggestion of a double, My Funny Valentine, that shows the 6 year vocal development from 10 to 16. If not, at least do the recent one. Over 600 vocalists have recorded this song, including all the legends & it's the best I've heard. It's a Masterpiece & is a masterclass in dynamics & overall vocal control of her instrument. I just re-listened to a number of legendary versions & none makes me feel it like Angelina.
