Very few groups could do what they did. At one concert I saw I counted 37 instrument changes. One song, they all played the keyboards and another they all played the drums. Zappa didn't change the instruments he just got more band members.

Actually, when i worked on my university radiostation i used to had a show in which i played only 60's-70's era of music. Maybe you'll find something on the university's radio station close to you. 😊
not your point, I know, more about the radio/music landscape as a whole, but internet stations do; NTS, for example (they have all kinds of shows, however, I guess there are more specific stations for prog, rock, etc.)
I have venerated Gentle Giant since the 70’s but only now watching this have I discovered Kerry Minnear played guitar as well as everything else! And to think that I call myself a musician…
If I could go back in time and choose one evening to relive, it'd be GG at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles back in 1976 (or 7). No band, ever, was as great as that. Music that will stay with me forever.

Back in - I think it was 1974 - I was voluntold to take the neighbours' Canadian visitor to a concert in Hamburg, 'cause I was of a similar age and I could speak English. The concert was Procol Harum. So we were sitting there in on one of the balconies in the very distinguished Musikhalle, when the promoter walked out on stage and announced that for (god knows what reason) they had decided to combine two concerts into one and the first would be by a band called Gentle Giant. Never heard of these guys before ... It was an utter tour de force. They played anything from chamber music to , well, what you see here and such like. In The Glass House, omg. We were blown away, completely. Sorry to say, Procol Harum after that didn't get a look in: they were just so pale in comparison. (no pun intended when I wrote that; then the penny dropped! rotfl)
Wow, is this great. The whole Art Rock movement of the 70s: King Crimson, Fairport Convention, Yes, ELP, Genesis --- these guys were on the cutting edge.
Absolutely. The European bands are steeped in classical, folk and jazz influences. Back then, amazing progressive bands and today symphonic metal bands like Nightwish, Epica etc. we took music out of schools and our music is suffering as a result.
I was privilegied to have seen Gentle Giant live in London back in the old glorious 70s. Thank you all you guys from the band for being such virtuos brilliant musicians!
And more than that. John Weathers could write songs too; see "Friends" from the Giant For a Day album (1982). I believe Mr Weathers also plays acoustic guitar on that song as well. And when I first heard it -- many years after it was released, sadly -- I was completely convinced it was a previously unreleased song by XTC (with a melody, chord change, and vocal style that, to me, sounded like a dead ringer for Andy Partridge), perhaps an outtake from their English Settlement album (1982) or similar. In fact, at this point, I would not be surprised to find that the GG song "Friends" has been a big influence on Andy Partridge's more pastoral, folk-ish songwriting.
I only ever saw Gentle Giant play once supporting Yes at The City Hall Newcastle upon Tyne, must have been about 1973 Yes had so much kit onstage they only had a narrow strip to perform on, great gig though Where has 50 years gone?
I'd forgotten about Gentle Giant and came across this by accident. Folk-Prog! What great musical choices we had back in the 70s! I also remember members from this band back in 60s when they Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, a more commercial outfit (but still very good).
I had the pleasure to see them in Nashville, Tennessee when they were touring with Black Sabbath in 1972. Gentle Giant played first, then Black Oak Arkansas, and Sabbath was the top bill. But Ozzy supposedly had a case of laryngitis so Black Oak played a double set! But G.G. were great and it was a great concert all the same. Kudos for the upload for a very uplifting performance! Bravo indeed!
That would be a great Double bill. I saw them in the late 70's at a swanky venue in Chicago I think the tickets were $10. I also saw an interesting JT opening act UK that was also a great Double Bill
Saw them at Balboa stadium in 1976 with Gary Wright, Yes, and Peter Frampton (Comes Alive tour). Gentle Giant was boo’d mercilessly, they really stunk. I never encountered them again.
What an incredibly talented (and under recognized) band. As someone who has followed and listened to G.Giant (other amazing prog. rock bands from this 70’s era) over many many years, I don’t think we will ever see this level of talent and song progressions ever again…
Yes, I saw these guys in 1978 at "The Joker Inn" in Elyria, Ohio. Blew me away. Every member of the band can play any instrument they want. Incredible!
In Montreal Forum with my girlfriend Manon we saw Genle Giant Live in Forum in Montreal the best Group prog ever with Steve Hackett Genesis Band , no doudt in Montreal Live !!!
A lovely song. I saw them on the tour where they recorded Playing the Fool. They were awesome, and hilarious. And everyone went, "Ahh" when the fairy lights came on.
There was no proper soundcheck. The band were called in at the last moment. Sight and Sound in Concert. We all watched it on TV with the sound turned down and the FM stereo tuner tuned to the radio. Many examples, Jethro Tull, Chieftains, Supertramp. There is a DVD of the whole concert. When English music was good.
1:34 - Kerry's synth not working in spite of him hitting the volume pedal, him realizing it and eventually switching to Wurlitzer for the second half of the phrase... and Derek chickening out of the high D at 5:20 - and who can blame him - that's *UP* there! Live music folks...
It’s a shame that such an awesome band’s performance was hampered by the people doing the sound and lights. They didn’t know what they were doing at times.
Okay kids, these are what musicians actually look and sound like.
People criticize the Missing Piece but this song proves it's a great album. The older I get, the more I appreciate this song and the sadder it gets
Absolutely love missing piece and its easily their most underrated album.
When your drummer picks up a Strat and joins in, it says a lot about a band's abilities and ethos.
I saw them live in 1974 and they switched instruments one from the other for an entire song. Incredible live performance.
Very few groups could do what they did. At one concert I saw I counted 37 instrument changes. One song, they all played the keyboards and another they all played the drums. Zappa didn't change the instruments he just got more band members.
@@abrahamlincolnjones2922 I saw one of those '74 shows, they all switched instruments. It was a great show.
Love you Gary Green!RIP Ray Shuman❤️
I think it's actually Kerry Minnear playing the Strat.

One of the very greatest progressive bands ever. This track proves it. Not only an amazing composition, but it's impeccably played and sung. Bravo!
magnificent
I wish radio stations would play this stuff again.

City lights flickered where Lake waters gleamed. Masterful.
I have venerated Gentle Giant since the 70’s but only now watching this have I discovered Kerry Minnear played guitar as well as everything else! And to think that I call myself a musician…
RIP Ray. You'll be missed.
Saw them back then, memories of old days indeed!

And now that we have grown old, those memories sometimes are our only comfort...

One of the GREAT prog bands of the ‘70s. Used to play the crap out of them when I was an all-nite FM radio DJ.
You obviously didn't play enough crap out of them! 🤣
I was privilegied to have seen Gentle Giant live in London back in the old glorious 70s. Thank you all you guys from the band for being such virtuos brilliant musicians!
Li vidi come spalla di apertura del concerto dei Jethro Tull a Novara, era il febbraio 72! Concerti indimenticabili!
How do you know they were virtuos?
@@digitalimager4946 cos' it only takes one of them to change a light bulb lol
I never knew the drummer could play guitar. What a truly gifted band they were.

Was in the studio for this tune and the whole Missing Piece album. Pure genius!
I only ever saw Gentle Giant play once supporting Yes at The City Hall Newcastle upon Tyne, must have been about 1973
Yes had so much kit onstage they only had a narrow strip to perform on, great gig though
Where has 50 years gone?
Saw them at the Rainbow in Hollywood, of all places. Small, but the perfect venue.
Gentle Giant A Great Band! WooF!!
Fantastic song, fantastic band! Great memories for me.
What a performance, best band ever.
These guys are amazing and so very underrated.
Brilliant loved every minute
Memory’s of old days indeed ♥️🇬🇧🏴
One of the best multi talented prog bands of the time ! Saw them back when we had stadium concerts in So cal 👍🏾🤙🏾
One of the best tracks in the later years

Such a wealth of musical talent - breathtaking and innovative.
one of my favourite tracks of the album Missing Piece, amazing musicians.
Timeless. Rudimentary harmonies, beautiful voice, nice sentiments.
There aren't any harmonies on this track. One lead vocal.
@@Rupert14 Er, the guitars are playing rudimentary harmonies, I hope?
Saw them open for Tull in the 70s. Incredible.

Love this song!❤
I saw them in 1977-ish in Boston as warm-up band for Renaissance. It should have been the other way around.
Fantastic in every way.
Incredibly moving...... great video .... memories of old days.... saw them on the Cruise to the Edge .... fabulous, brought tears to my eyes......
Gives me the chills. Always has.
Saw them at the Palace Theatre, Albany, NY, on November 3, 1977.
Doesn’t get much better, love them ❤
Never got to to see them and learned about them too late.
Yes, I saw these guys in 1978 at "The Joker Inn" in Elyria, Ohio. Blew me away. Every member of the band can play any instrument they want. Incredible!
Why the downfall? Why can't people make music like this anymore?
I saw them play this live at the Palladium in NY for the Missing piece tour one of my favorite tracks by them .All the members playing guitars .
It’s like the prog version of BÖC’s all guitar encore
saw them twice in 75/76 newcastle city hall
Extraordinarios. Multiinstrumentistas.GENIOS.
Prog Magicians!

And everyone went, "Ahh" when the fairy lights came on.
muito bom, qualidade boom gosto, euma melodia agradavel.
I saw them in Denver on the Interview tour, opening for Yes on their Relayer tour. $6.60 very well spent.
Just wonderful.

Great.
Just bought Octopus a couple of days ago, the Steven Wilson remix.
Beautiful... ❤
Fantastici, è da 50 anni che li conosco
Saw these guys open up for Peter Frampton and Steppenwolf in 1976. Steppenwolf was the headliner.
Cool tune - well-thought-out compositionally. I would loved to have heard this with voice of Anderson or Squire.
You ain't kidding memories !!
How do you get this good -- perfection !!!
California, the shrine auditorium... fantastic
I used to buy albums if I liked the cover. Giant For A Day was one of those buys. Adam and the Ants was another. No regrets on either.
Show 💯Muito bom
GENTLE GIANT GENIUSZ GENIUSZ GENIUSZ nad GENIUSZAMI KOSMOS KOCHANI na zawsze dziękuję BARDZO
Portsmouth's greatest contribution to prog
When the bassist passes the bass to another bassist and picks up a violin...!
Epic....

RIP Ray
What a bad! What a song! What a terrible state the music industry is in today.
near the end somebody was playing some guitar lines and it wasn't those 2 musical geniuses on the stage, was it
❤❤❤

Это композиция. Высшей воды.
A Strange band ,Strange = F GOOD..them and Soft Machine.
Too many good bands, all at the same time... No hierarchy too much...
Nobody wanted to be that dudes keyboard tech.
Amen
It’s a shame that such an awesome band’s performance was hampered by the people doing the sound and lights. They didn’t know what they were doing at times.
John playing a strat and Kerry's struggling with the output of the Yamaha synth, so he switches the melody to the rhodes at 1:40
I got you a keyboard for your keyboard so you can keyboard while you keyboard
And people wonder why punk rock happened!
I guess the sound-man was out back smoking a reefer. Too bad for posterity's sake, and ours.
PICK UP THAT SWORD , AGAIN ..WE SEE YOU 😊
not their greatest song - but still - I've never seen a band where all five musicians are at one point playing guitar
Nothing Worth Listening To Here
The music is nice. The singing is awful.
Just one more illustration of how unbelievably good this band was...
🥰
