Cool.. I have used my dd tarp M several times with a similar set up. And it works for me. But bivy bag is a must. However I was always trying to fit trekking pole underneath the tarp to make sure that water isn't comming inside a shelter.. I was always worried if the loop is 45 degree up like in your set up, then in heavy downpour it will get wet so technically water will be dripping under the tarp and eventually slide down right on me. Have your experienced smth like this?
Thanks no but I haven’t experienced really heavy rain in it , I suppose in heavy the big hole at the front would eventually let water in . I suppose it depends also if the wind drives the rain in aswell. And yes a bivi bag is a must even for morning dew etc TFW atb Dave
Guess the weather gods like you as much as they do me 🤪 Liked the tarp and bivi set up. Looked much better than the test run. I too have recently gone down this route but yet to try it out. Plans for the mountains with minimal kit! Which brings me to ask, with a super light tarp and bivi, how come you had such a large packed rucksack?
You weren't in the area were you lol , i will look forward to seeing your trips with the tarp . I'm not sure why my bag was so full lol it was under 12kg but I do carry too much stuff that I didn't use . I need to put it on a diet and get it below 10kg . TFW atb Dave
Well done keeping dry under the tarp after such a rainy night, Dave. I like the way you set up the tarp. How are you coping with your bivi? I went out wild camping with my bivi last night (using the Alpkit Soloist ground sheet). The outer surface of my sleeping bag always gets quite wet when used inside the bivi. I am assuming that this is caused by condensation of my breath. However, it still gets wet when keeping the head well outside the bivi on dry warm nights. Did you try your's in the summer? I will probably use the inner tent of the Alpkit Soloist in the future (without the bivi). Have you had more recent experiences with the bivi?
Unfortunately that was my last camp before lockdown and I havent done a bivi since , but I upgraded my bivi to the hunka XL as I found the standard size too small too fit my mat and bag in . I am avoiding using it at the moment as too many midges etc will try again when it comes in to autumn . I did have condensation but I thought it was because there was little room in the bivi for the bag to breathe. I suppose it all depends on weather , humidity and wind . This camp was damp with little or no wind and right next to a stream . atb Dave
