    I’m the guy who made the tarp :)
    It’s called the Wild Sky Gear Wolf Solo tarp: I make them from Dyneema, the strongest fiber on earth. At 15X stronger than steel it reaaaally isn’t going to break.
    I used a tent made from this exact fabric back when I was 15 and solo hiked Lands End to John o Groats in the winter. 1500 miles later and after blizzards and storms my tent was fine. It’s the poles, pegs or guylines which break long before the fabric gets anywhere near its limit, as happened here.
    This one was a little noisy because it didn’t have any internal tie outs, but I make all my gear in Britain, and customise all my tarps free of charge with extra tie outs on demand. In these extreme conditions I would definitely add a couple to take the slack (which would cut the noise). I sell self adhesive tie outs so they can be added later too.
    A wonderful video, it was people like you who inspired me to get out there in the first place. Keep going. HYOH.

      Yeah, I was surprised to hear her say she was worried about it holding up. Also, glad to hear someone making UL gear in the UK. Now if you could get people in Europe to switch to trail runners.... Haha Always surprised the heck out of me seeing all the boots and Gortex. Btw, probably gonna hike across Wales next year, and do the Irish Way. Do you have a store or is it all online?

    • @WildSkyGear
      @WildSkyGear 10 місяців тому +10

      Haha to be fair anyone who isn't highly drunk should be thinking about if their tent is going to hold up in such a massive storm, and that's before they use somthing crazy like DCF!
      Yep we're online exclusive, we do sort of have free next day delivery on everything though :) Have a great time on in Wales, which trail are you tackling: offas dyke national trail is a cracker.
      Trail runners are the way, although in these delightfully damp islands waterproof socks sort of become essential. I totally get why everyone here wants goretex, it's good for shorter hikes (95% of the UK outdoor market). It's when you're going serious distance goretex becomes a rather wet poisoned chalice.

      They do get tiny holes over time if they rub on anything. Still works but that’s another thing to watch out for. All of my gear is DCF and it’s worth every penny.

      I'm looking for a really rigid tarp at the moment, plenty of those i recon, but the problem is weight. The tarp is going to complement a hilleberg tent, be above it basically to act as both a roof outside the opening and as shade. It needs to be a huge tarp, at least 5x5 meters. probably longer in one direction. You make sizes like these with this material?

Once I learned how to use guy lines and stakes from watching you I was able to set up my Lanshan 2 person 4 season tent and survive wind storms in Hawaii last year. It took me about two hours to set up my tent but it stayed up and I stayed dry for 9 days. I just laughed every time the trekking pole fell over and it collapsed. I enjoy going out alone and spend time with nature. If you want the company of cute animals sing show tunes to them. Don’t know if it works with bears and mountain lions. Your videos are like 3 D now! Next purchase is the Bivvy bag and tarp you use.

    Hi Claire darling I have been watching some off your older videos and I absolutely love them and it was really nice too see that cute little robin sitting on the rock watching you put up your tarp for sleeping under.

    Over a year ago I bought the bigger version tarp (2.7m x 3.6m) in the 12:09 same discrete camo pattern. I love this tarp, no stretch and has stood up to some pretty grim weather - albeit it was eye watering expensive. It’s one of those super versatile pieces of kit that comes along on every trip. I carry two DCF ‘cups’, also from the same guy, to allow hiking poles to be used inside if needed. A great bit of kit. I use 1.5mm Dyneema line with mine - bank line also works well. I use a large piece of polycro for a ground sheet (sometimes take Tyvek instead). I keep 3m long guy lines on each corner and carry 4x 4m long loose guy lines plus an 18m long Dyneema line to use as a ridge line etc.
    as an aside; I fold my tarp when putting it away; I don’t stuff it as some suggest.
    Your posts are always so brilliantly composed and meaningful.😊

    Ha ha the Eryri robins are cheeky little buggers - they often appear to check ob whether you're up to no good I find ;-) My guess with the pole is that you're going to try another abandoned roofless shelter and this time use the pole as a central tarp support.
