- Retro Core SS Volume 2 takes a look at the Hitachi made Hi-Saturn as well as the Saturn MPEG Video card. Unlike other consoles that had video card accessories, the Saturn's could also enhance games as well as play video CDs and in some cases, Photo CDs.
It's incredible that has been 10 years! I remember watching this video a long time ago but can't remember where. I'm glad I found ir again. Very nice video :)
Wow, has it been that long since I made this.
Great quality. I don't remember the song Hot Night from Ghostbusters but from TV series Automan. Great series to watch. 👍
@Tel1mektar
The PlayStation generation wouldn't have been around when DVDs were the latest thing in video. When the Saturn and PlayStation were released Laser Discs were the main format for video fanatics :)
That song is called So Blue. It's by Moritaka Chisato.
MPEG decoding was quite resource hungry in the 1990s. If you had the right hardware even a 386 machine will give you flawless playback if you didnt it could even being a Pentium to its knees decoding via software. It wasnt until PCI graphic cards equipped with VRAM that you could have feasible software decoding at 24-bit color depth though 16-bit was usually enough. The fact that Saturn's 28mhz CPU was able to flawlessly decode MPEG-1 with just a small expansion card is absolutely amazing. Ive seen ISA bus based MPEG decoder cards and damned if they werent 12-14" in length.
@EscapeCyberia
That game is Vatlva released by Victor and developed by Ancient.
@drunkensailor112 the VCD card will work on any NTSC system (Jap/US). There is one that works on PAL & NTSC systems. I saw one on e-bay once. I easily found a site via google that says which each VCD card does and the region it works with. I have a JVC version that works great.
I'm not sure why you thought it sounded like Europe's Final Countdown (Classic 80's rock track!). Oh, yeah, I did spray paint my Saturn. I have a matching Silver and Black Dreamcast too that looks really nice.
@madcapoperator
Sounds like it could be on it's way out. saying that, the silver & black Saturn used in this video was found in a puddle in the rain waiting for collection by the rubbish guys. Japan is like that. Loads of electronics just get thrown away. Anyway, I took it home (this was in 1999), cleaned it up and it worked. 5 years later the motor that moves the CD drive died but then came back to life! It still works perfectly to this very day, almost 13 years later.
@konsolkongendk
The PAL version of Gun Griffon doesn't have the MPEG video file so the card won't do anything with that game. Only the Japanese version includes the MPEG file.
Virtua Cop doesn't need a gun but it's best to be played with one. Also the gun won't work on modern HD screens. If I remember the B button will reload if using a control pad.
Nice, I have the JVC card and a Japanese Sega Saturn.
I've lived 10 years in Japan :D
No idea. Ilive in Japn so I would pick one up from yahoo Auctions Japan or some used game store but in the west you're probably stuck with Ebay.
I am intrigued by the cards, but web search and videos are very limited to the same information. I actually grabbed 2 Japanese games with heavily featured video. Body Special 264 and Yakyuken Special. With video being a main component in the game play I was hoping a card would clean up the video a little on a 4K SCART combo.
Sadly neither of those games make use of the video card.
If your after a title with women in then theres a Mpeg enhanced release of Wangan Dead Heat for the Saturn. The Mpeg version comes in a Dule CD case.
That could well be true since the Monkey VCD is originally from Hong Kong which uses PAL.
that's not actually anime music but a remix of the Pet Shop Boys - Yesterday, When I was mad. I can't remember what the mix was called though. Sorry
Was the remix by Coconut 1?
Thanks mark!
Was hoping to see the only game you can't play without the video card.
Lunar mpeg-ban .
Check out my Battle of the Ports Lunar video for that.
You'd have to be pretty damn young to not being born when DVDs wen't famous XD
the laser on my saturn appears to be a bit temperamental. sometimes it loads first time but most times it either doesnt recoginse the disc for a good 10 minutes or starts loading but then dumps me on the boot screen. funnily enough it only does this with pal games and any japanese i play with the action replay cartridge work absolutely fine.
@drunkensailor112
As far as I know, yes. Chinese rip-off MPEG cartridges are region free though.
i will have a pal sega saturn and i would like to buy a video card for collection but i can´t find it anywhere ,so you know any site that is worth checking?
one more thing you need to have a ntsc card to play ntsc video cd´´s or its multi region /tv system?
i love your Silver Saturn, I'll paint one in the same color scheme
lol at 6:44 ! The singer sounded like Europe's The Final Countdown. ( I love that song!) I love that color! Did you spray paint it?
The Saturn MPEG Card looks like it does the job pretty well for obsolete hardware. Which one of the MPEG cards do you reccomend? By the way, for getting RGB video, don't you use JP-21 cables?
The best Mpeg card to get is the Hitachi one for video quality.
I do use JP21 RGB cables for my Saturn. Also use them on all other consoles older than Dreamcast.
@@RetroCore Thanks for the tip. I like to keep reccomendations and tips in mind when buying stuff.
No worries. The JVC / Victor card has some extra photo functionality I beleive but I'm not too sure what it does. I forget these days. The hitachi card deffinety has the better Mpeg decoding though.
What's the name of music your playing? Love that retro anime music.
@Padoca85
Thank you. My Silver & Black Dreamcast with matching pad and VMU looks much better though.
@Yakumo1975 I dont think I saw those yet. Must look cool indeed
Great video, I also got a JVC 2.0 card the other day, looks a little diff than yours however.
Yakumo1975 Could I use the MPEG card or VCD card on a regular White model 2 Sega Saturn & will it be able to play vcd movies like the Hi-Saturn?
Hey, I just got a Sega Saturn from ebay! It came with Virtua Cop! Does Virtua Cop need a Light gun? Because i don't know how to reload, and i dont have a light gun. And also , I like your video!
this mpeg card only works on a japanese saturn?
No. I use a Japanese Victor v3.0 on a U.S. Saturn model 2 👍
Hello can you tell me the name of the games and videos appears here? Thanks
It should've been included with the system. Yet another nail in the coffin.
I don't think so. Video cards back in the day were very expensive. If it was included the price of the console would have killed it even in Japan. What Sega should have done is like what Sony did and have a better software solution for video from the begining. In Japan they did eventually with TrueMotion and MpegSoftdec (which was later improved for the Dreamcast) but all that came too late.
hey, what's the name of the song in 11:15? it's very catchy!
Is that song from Terminator?
What song would that be? The opening theme? No, that's a mix of the Pet Shop Boys track, Yesterday when I was mad.
Yakumo1975 For some reason I thought it sounded like the song playing in the club where arnie massacres everyone
oh no, that's some classic 80's stuff.
13:11 2015 was last year

You missed 3 years in there 🙁
I have a question. Where can you buy this MPEG Card, and how much would it cost?
where did you get the silver saturn from
I made it. I also have a Silver Mega Drive. The Saturn was a stock grey Japanese model.
@@RetroCore the first one of the proto type saturns was silver, that's why i asked :)
No worries. It was the prototype Saturn that inspired me to make this. I've always wanted that prototype. The case is also slightly different on the proto but I'm sure you are aware of that.
I like your accent, where are you from?
vcd is best
