Ild just like to add never pull a exacto knife towards any part of your body once its slipped it's hard to stop momentum so keep your hands and all body parts away from where the direction of your cut runs off the material (the danger zone ) in other words never pull a cut with a razor knife towards your body ever ...always cut away from your body and anyone else in the room...be smart, stay safe ..never put your hands where you wouldn't put your face...
You can pull towards just lock you arm and pull with your shoulder/ back. be aware of the danger and never slash . Drag the knife don't pull it so you don't have momentum after.
I have done this many times. Works really good! Pro tip... Score the paper on the wall as well, to the same size as the paper edge on your patch. Peel the paper around the hole back and your patch will fit flush on the wall and you wont have to float your mud to hide the rise from the extra layer of paper. If done right, you'll never know there was ever a hole there 😉
Mud doesn't adhere well to the raw gypsum. You would be well advised to either not do this at all, or if you want to, treat the gypsum with an oil based primer (not worth the effort for such minimal gain).
Nice technique. Beveling is a great idea, I'll be doing that next time I do this. I'd also suggest sanding the wall with 120-320 grit before inserting the patch, then lightly wetting both wall and paper edges of the patch before adding mud.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 I think it can but theoretically it should only be the thickness of the paper. I did it again not that long ago and it left a slight depressed area in the center, which I filled with compound, sanded, hit it again with a thin layer to hide the patch and then sprayed texture. Came out indistinguishable from the rest of the wall.
My little brothers anger issues brought me here today and its a very good technique and I patched the hole that I wanted to today thank you very very very much
I like to use a hot mud for this because it doesn't shrink and is stronger than original. It also saves time for me to put the dry patch on the wall and then trace it with the knife on the wall, pull it out, and then pull the cut paper off of the wall. Then when you put your patch back on you only need the mud one time and you're done 😁
Good video, my drywall guy showed me this. I would highly recommend not using the spring door stops. I have those and they give in easily. Id use solid door stops.
Dude!!! You are fabulous!! I LOVED it when you pulled all of the old patches out of the wall. I was saying... "door stop they need a door stop" and you added one. I use the doorstops that go on the hinges... that way people don't step on the new doorstop & break the spring... It takes a bit longer & is a bit harder to find but it stops the problem FOREVER. If you have 3 hinges you can use the midway hinge & it is a bit easier to install alone. I have hinge doorstops that have been on my doors for 30+ years & have never failed. AND I loved how you rolled the drywall patch over the edge of the tabletop. I was wondering how to do that & not rip the front tape. GREAT solution & great vid!!
You can also do two things: First install a metal mesh behind the hole. Anchor it with temporary screws through the dry wall outside the area of the hole. Remove the anchor screws once the patch is in and the mud is dry. Then fill the small anchor screw holes. I have done this several times. Second cut out the paper of the existing drywall front paper so that the paper of the patch fits into the paper removed around the hole. This makes everything flush.
Hey uhh I tried using dynamite to make the hole because I didn't feel like cutting any tips how to fix the missing wall also my kid died when he was playing some cod on a 24 killstreak he also was mentally challenged and now there is wall and guts all over my house it sure was a mess 😐 now I got to clean it up and I don't feel like it and I'm babysitting so I might use dynamite to clean the mess up
Been meaning to try this. Also is that an OLFA Utility knife? If so, that’s all I use. The best and sharpest ever. It’s replaced all my old utility knives and cleaner cuts than a jab saw. 👍🏼🗡
Would that patch be string enough to support a fluorescent light fixture? I the screw that held it in place was ruined due to the upstairs faucet left running. So I wanted to cut out a new patch and replace the ruined drywall but will the patch not work even if I let it site for 12 hours or so?
Using mud, you feather it out and make it a gradual bump. That's the way drywalling works. There's always bumps, but you just kind of spread it out over a larger distance using several coats of mud to make it not obvious.
Also should have pulled the previous disaster of a broken piece of dryway and that paper, 'thru...first...so you can check for wires behind the fix area. You just run a saw thru there before checking, and sever some wires.... well.... not good.
Excellent service by UA-cam never expect to be so much videos of how to fix the drywall after being mad,my wall about to look exactly as how it was Im gonna be breaking it more recently without worry about it 😂😂They should be couple videos how to fix tv after punch cause of lag
First it was called a California patch, then someone decided to call it a blowout patch so California simply reclaimed it 😂😂😂 Lighten up pal, the important thing is, it works well.

I’m so challenged when it comes to stuff like this I appreciate the tips.
“Cut towards your buddy, not your body”
I'd like to add. Never comment obvious things on UA-cam let natural selection take place. Pain is a hellava teacher.
@Strat Abuser correct

Correction: You ARE an expert! Thank you, I am now headed to the basement to do as you demonstrated. My patch will be 40" x 16".
I have done this many times. Works really good!

Wow that sounds like a neat idea I'll have to try that, thanks
I would be afraid of blistering

Oh wow, this was the cleanest version of the patch that I have watched. Thank you
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it

Yeah it seems like this will leave a bulge.

Good stuff, I tried this technique on a huge hole and it came out real nice.
How big??
Theres a certain point where this isn’t an option just so ya know.
Great detailed video and right to the point. I had to fill a big hole after removing an old laundry chute door. This video was a big help! Thank you
Amazing video! Very thorough and straight to the point. With very clear instructions
The old hole repair was...fantastic! I was pretty sure that we`ll find Hoffa in there... :) Nice job!
My little brothers anger issues brought me here today and its a very good technique and I patched the hole that I wanted to today thank you very very very much
Very well done! Such a clear explanation and easy to follow. That is a most useful video, thanks
Yes. I agree. Very easy to follow. I'm about to patch a small hole soon and this was a good refresher.
Great technique! Worked well for me, and I didn't have to go to the store to buy a small quantity of tape. Thanks for posting.
Glad it helped!

Your tutorial was like that of an expert, well done bud !
I like it but I still think putting a piece of backing behind it to secure and keep the patch flush holds it better, I'd still go with backing
I’m about to do this tomorrow and I’m super excited!
THE CALIFORNIA PATCH !!!! I like the whole idea and fix...
thanx

I watched this, failed miserably, then began shoving paper behind it for a shitty patch job. Thanks for the idea.
😅
Great video Chris!
Never thought of doing it like that this is very good
Needed a technique and this was 3rd one I found. Wow! Simple/straightforward. Thanks.
" Iam just going to install this doorstop before I finish the job, So I can kick it for the next 30min whilst completion, because I like the sound."
Great explanation - very simple yet so effective
Great video! This really helped me patch a hole today. Thank you!
First class thanks, did this in no time at all, I haven’t a clue on D I Y by the way, saved me from paying a greedy builder. Thanks 👍🏻
Glad I could help thanks
God bless you! I completed my hole while watching it ☺️
thank you, glad I could help

jk.😉 cheers for sharing!

None of this is required. I have patched hundreds of holes as shown in this video.

Great video
석고구멍 메우는 방법 잘 배웠습니다! 👍
LOL I love the litte treasure you found
Are you using mud or joint compound?
Great video, thank you 🙏
cool didnt know that was a term good job
Thank you.
Very nice
would you ever want to add a wood backer as well?
Been meaning to try this. Also is that an OLFA Utility knife? If so, that’s all I use. The best and sharpest ever. It’s replaced all my old utility knives and cleaner cuts than a jab saw. 👍🏼🗡
Yes they are my favourite
Awesome. This is what I need. Great method. Thanks.😀👍
Clear as mud!
I think near a door knob is better to put backing more secure 🔐
Nvr new that was the way to put on a door stopper I've ben doing it wrong this whole time 🤯🤯
It depends on the type of door stop you install! I installed the ones where you screw a plate to the base board and then twist the spring into that!
LOL. You must be an engineer with all that measuring. Pros free hand and eyeball that shit. But you have the general concept.
Great demo! tyfs love
Love your technique ! Thanks as I am going to use this method.
Would that patch be string enough to support a fluorescent light fixture?
I the screw that held it in place was ruined due to the upstairs faucet left running. So I wanted to cut out a new patch and replace the ruined drywall but will the patch not work even if I let it site for 12 hours or so?
Consider screwing pieces of board that you can insert and fit inside of the hole (as backstop) to support the light fixture,,
Wood backing with mesh plus HOT MUD best way to do it.
Well done sir
Ok I did this now you can tell I did a job there this patch just sticks out more than the wall itself, what do I do about it now
Using mud, you feather it out and make it a gradual bump. That's the way drywalling works. There's always bumps, but you just kind of spread it out over a larger distance using several coats of mud to make it not obvious.
Don't forget to put a stopper on the bottom of the door next time or hell even on top to prevent that hole
I saw the video I'm just saying don't forget to do it
Good explanation.
Brilliant!
Is that patch just a plan Piece of drywall?
It starts out as such
Going to try this
Thanks!
Here's my new doorstop.
And my next video will be
how to paint your baseboards
Perfection!
That's a great idea...if you want to do it the hard and long way.
It was good, waooo good idea. Thanks
Try the California drywall patch instead, is not the best but is fast
Excellant
Genius!
Thanks
Also should have pulled the previous disaster of a broken piece of dryway and that paper, 'thru...first...so you can check for wires behind the fix area. You just run a saw thru there before checking, and sever some wires.... well.... not good.
Where is the end result?
Only sand after the last coat
No you’re wrong. That was very expert
Thank you =)
Nice!!

I would just put a plastic disk for door knobs on the wall over it bam done.
Cool!
I suggust using ferring strips to prevent a hole from being made again
Problem is, there is no support behind there, doing it this way.
Well don't lean on it🤣
@@patf03 🤣🤣. Good point
@@AkronKid330 i sure as shit ain't gonna lean on the one I just did about an hour ago lol 😆😂
It's called a blowout patch and it's been around for a long time I don't know how California can claim it
First it was called a California patch, then someone decided to call it a blowout patch so California simply reclaimed it 😂😂😂
Lighten up pal, the important thing is, it works well.
Cause hot mud was suppose to be used ..don’t be salty
CA patch in your mind! l used to be apts maint in san diego ca and l do not think so😎😄😄😄😄
is very small hole! go to home Depot get a patch 5x5 and bingo!!
You can be good!!working in bakery!🙄🙄
We always called it a hot patch. By saying CALIFORNIA patch, I assumed you were just going to shit in the hole
Haha 😂 my thoughts exactly
Use a piece of wood seems faster and stronger 👍
💯%👍👍👍👍😎
"California Patch" my ass. It's a blowout patch and it's been around since sheet rock was invented.
Why would this be called a "California Patch", "drywall patching" makes more sense
Dry wall is so shit . Lath and lime plaster any day
Just cut out the hole and put a backer board in there and screw the new drywall in, then tape and mud it. Jesus.
That's not solid even in china you need to put wood inside🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
🤦
Thank you !
