YouTube Is Bad For My Health - Why I Leave My Channel Sometimes

  • The brutal honest truth about making UA-cam videos. Sometimes being a content creator isn’t fun…at all. Not all of us enjoy being monetized. Having to keep up with the algorithm can be stressful and it causes anxiety. For me anyway.. Which makes doing this bad for my health at times. Some of you asked for this video, so here it is. Just for you. Thanks for all your support over these last couple years. I’m not done though.. I had to take a break from making videos so I could get my head back in a better place to make content that not only you enjoy, but I enjoy making again.

I'm here because I find your videos interesting. Not just to see motorcycle videos. That's just something we have in common. We are around the same age and we both started riding after our kids were old enough to still be ok if something happened. It's your channel and I believe you should make the videos that you want to make if you decide to make a video. that's just my two cents from a 47 year old rider that still ride the Supersport for fun. Lol. most of the guys who make motorcycle videos on UA-cam are in their 20s and some of their video and content gets annoying. so if you want to go ride to a barn as your videos from now on, I'll still be here.

I started watching your videos when I was still learning to ride. You're one of the only people I found that's not obnoxious or over the top. I watch your videos typically during the nicer weather months and like to have them kind of stack up so I can binge a few. You're very down to earth and it makes watching videos relaxing. If you're stressed out it'll be noticeable through the videos so its good you know when to step back for a minute and collect yourself.
    Ride safe!

Your worth is not measured by how many views you get. Do UA-cam IF and WHEN you CHOOSE to.
Your videos are valued by me. I don’t give a damn if I like a barn video, and only 1000 other humans do as well.
Thank you and take care GW.

“Really don’t like getting paid for doing this...” I get it. I’ve always said no to “tournament fishing” or “disc golf tournaments.” Once you get wrapped up in that it becomes work, not a hobby. I really enjoy your channel, whenever it pops up. 👍🏼

Sounds like there's a lot of emotions in this one. Thanks for sharing with us!
I'd like to think the vast majority of audiences just appreciate videos as and when they come out. There may be an expectation of quality, but that applies to a lot of things we watch, buy, ect...
I've seen your channel "blow up" from when you first started and felt a little envious, but at the end of the day, it's nice being a smaller creator.

Wow, I didn’t know UA-cam was like that and obviously how it made you feel. I passed my bike test a couple of years back at the age of 52 and looked at you tube for help and guidance, loads of info out there and I follow a few people, what I really like about you and the videos you post is how natural they are, very relaxed, very informative and unscripted. I try and ride like you, nice and relaxed and take it all in. As long as you feel safe doing them and your family are ok then I’ll be happy if you only posted one video a year. Chin up mate, take care and thanks for this post, it’s one of your best. Cheers. 🇬🇧

They've really inspired and informed me as I've began my 2-wheeled adventures! So don't knock yourself, you do well with your videos, you've got your own unique approachable style which I've really enjoyed. Many moto-vloggers can't even get the basics right, and you do! Also as someone who works in the entertainment/media industry, you hit on one thing I always tell people - whatever you're creating, just make it for yourself, don't try to please others. I really appreciate your viewpoint. It matches how I feel about my own channel. My channel is tiny and I am not even close to being monetized, nor am I ever expecting to be. I created my channel as a hobby to learn how to use a GoPro and edit which I am making improvements. What I have noticed with some channels that have started small and then grew into monetization is the focus some have on making money and asking for subscribers, stacking it with Patreon and selling t-shirts etc.. etc…etc…. I get it that they are trying to do YT as a career but it gets a bit over the top with some of them. I usually unsubscribe when those creators start selling their content. I appreciate honest creators like you who are down to earth and have something of value to add. Good job!

To this day I turn down sponsorship offers. I have the same view about other channels as you. It drives me nuts how a majority of them crank out videos with titles that have zero to do with the content, or they take 30 minutes to mention the topic. I don’t watch any of the “big” motorcycle channels because of that. I won’t even go into how the big channels don’t even acknowledge the people watching their bs. No thanks, no appreciation, don’t reply to comments…etc.

Consider anything you get paid a bonus for doing something you enjoy doing! :) On a personal note, two things. First, your channel, your video's, was the tipping point for me finally taking the plunge and getting a motorcycle. The one I've wanted for so many years. It came down to, if not now, then when? Thank you for that. Second, you, as a person are someone I would like to know and have in my life. I want to thank you for publishing this. It helped me. I'm a writer and an extreme introvert. I have written a series of books that became somewhat popular, not best sellers but they made money for me on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and some other platforms, Once I started writing them and publishing them I started feeling pressure and read that I needed to publish every 3 months or less. I hate deadline and commitments. Even making an appointment with a doctor or dentist looms over me. I wrote for my audience and did fairly well but then decided to write a book that was a little more personal but still fiction. It is going nowhere. I'm sick of writing and trying and feeling that pressure so I'm not writing now. Don't know if I ever will again.
People like us feel pressure from the "Them and They" who live within us. It is our impression of the people around us and sometimes we may be spot on with our estimation of our role with them and sometimes we're off, but we always feel it more than them. Unfortunately, I'm 70 years old and still haven't found a way to successfully deal with being a family man and writer while living down deep inside my head. I hope you work this all out and manage the family situations and your need to communicate but also be private and not under a lot of pressure. I'm getting back into biking. I've done it off and on (like I do all things) for almost 60 years. I have enjoyed your content and honesty.
I thought of starting a UA-cam channel and publishing videos of my biking experiences but realizing it would be just more pressure and diminish the pleasure I feel riding and adventuring, I've decided to pass on my own UA-cam channel.
    Be well and Be safe.

after watching this video yesterday I need to relate my story to you and I hope you read this. In the fall of 2019 I went through a loss of a relationship and my home . I ended up having to move 150 miles to live with some friends while I was regrouping my life. At the time I was 65 and felt so much anguish and loss, daily life was a struggle. It had been 25 years since I owned my last motorcycle and had started thinking that maybe I would look into buying another. It may have been in November of 2019 I ran into your channel and began following you and subscribed. watching your videos and listening to your thoughts led me to make my bike purchase. By the end of January 2020 I purchased a BMW F310R and in March hit the highways getting my riding skills back. This was at the beginning of covid so the highways were nearly empty and it was heaven. being out on my bike riding was the thing that saved my sanity with what was going on around me. I live in Ohio and in 2 years I put 16000 miles on the BMW. In March of last year I was able to trade the 310 in for a BMW F900R and have put 6000 miles on it since then and now in a couple of months I will be 69 years old and hope I have a few more good years of riding left. Somewhere along the way I lost track of your channel, not sure what happened but I am glad I found this video yesterday. I watched all of your early videos back in the beginning. To finish up I want you to know how you helped me get through a very tough period in my life and influenced my decision to buy my bike. We never know who or how our words are going to help someone and I just wanted you to know that there is so much value in what you have done on this channel. DUDE I think you literally saved my life! I am serious.....

What's up man. It's been some time! I do remember your video about your photography because that's one of my hobbies too. I hear what you're saying about a UA-cam channel and at times I also feel pressured, but not enough where I dislike it. Yet. I really enjoy creating content and a video a week I feel I can pull off. The hardest part is finding the time and the motivation. For the last several years I've been dealing with some personal things (I've never talked about on video) and it's been unbearable at times. I've thought about walking away from this, but I need some outlet to keep my mind busy on something so it helps. My advice is to create videos that you want to make, not to appease the YT Gods. If we're authentic the audience picks up on the human element and they appreciate that more so than some staged, boring video you don't enjoy making. See ya around! ;)

The comments are what I figured they would be. Understanding. Your followers watch you because they relate or appreciate how you personally explain things. We appreciate your honesty too. Sure we like endless videos. BUT not at the expense of your health. You've shared enough of yourself that a number of your followers will always be around because we like you. So you do you, man. Not feeling it, don't do it. BUT when you do, we'll be here to check out your video. Even if like you say, ride to take a picture of a barn, or say nothing more than hi! wanna take a ride with me. Then at the end, say have a good day! Safe travels!
    PS
Now I gotta find that video you took a picture of a barn. 👍

(Apologies, I just spam watched your last videos. I was late, haha) I'd love to be able to do something with my channel, but I press the record button and just ride in silence. I bought the stuff I need to talk, but my brain runs blank, haha. It's fun for me, but me being dull and boring depresses me..at the same time. It's weird. Hoping to get back at it this year. But, your content is killer, in my opinion, dude. The photography stuff is absolutely astounding! Like I've said before, you've shown me (us) some of the gnarliest views! I happily enjoy your rants, and your informational teaching stuff. But, whatever you end up deciding to do with the channel, I hope it puts a smile on your face. I'll be here until the end, buddy! 🤘🏻

Wanna know a trick? Don’t force a topic. Many times I go out to record a video and end up talking about something other than what I intended. To me, that makes it not only a better video, it also flows better making editing easier. Build the video around whatever you’re naturally thinking about. I typically record about an hour of footage and edit it down to around 12 minutes. The rest goes in the trash. If I can do this stuff, anyone can…and that ain’t no BS.

@@GasWorksISO I think I tried too hard to do kind of what you talked about. The evergreen videos. That, and wanting some sort of schedule for the bs algorithm. Boy did that fail, haha. But, thank ya' dude! This actually made some gears turn for me, honestly. (Along with the info in the video) No forcing, just go with the flow, essentially.

Thank you for the input it's the second video of yours I've watched and you have certainly hit the mark, relating to the points that needed to be addressed concerning finding a happy place whilst having fun during this arduous task of channel maintenance.
Your advice here has certainly brought a lot of light since I am one of those small channels deep in Southern Africa where just finding decent roads are a task at hand, never mind having all the right gear as you would notice if you had to check one of my videos out.
As for the anxiety issues even as small as I am I can truly relate, whilst all of my videos are shot with a phone camera editing and providing good sound has been another of my battles.
I must say the info here provided will at least help me clean up my act and keep my videos motorcycle related only, do a few changes to my cover photos and maybe change the channel name which is in my personal name, after being challenged by my younger son during covide with my limited digital experience.
If you ever have the time kindly watch one of my latest videos and your experienced advice is most welcome.
Good luck with the future of yours and keep riding and filming.
    All the best from Johannesburg.

I remember to video that you was talking about and enjoyed it. I was also making vlogs at the time, and was nowhere near the amount of subscribers as you. On November 25th 2019, I was involved in a motorcycle accident. After 3 days in the hospital and dealing with my injuries I deleted all my vlogs. Depression is an ugly thing. Well, I have since replaced my motorcycle, and got back into riding again. I want to make new vlogs with the new ride, but just can't seem to get myself to get beyond going out, and recording the the ride. For some reason as soon as I start editing, I find something I don't like about it, and just delete everything. I feel like it just doesn't seem entertaining to me.

I enjoyed this video. I was reminded of another UA-camr with a very successful channel. He did a video with tears in his eyes. He said he started his channel just for fun not for making money. He said he had lots of fun and really enjoyed it. He said he started out making the videos he wanted to make and now he's not happy anymore. My suggestion was that he go back to the beginning. To go back to making videos he wanted to make and not worry about anything else. Just do it for you and no one else.

I watched that video you mentioned - the one where you were focusing (no pun intended) on a lot of photography - back when you first posted it. I think I even commented on it. I thought that was an awesome video, and I’m surprised it didn’t get more views without you mentioning it again. As far as I’m concerned, more videos like that would be welcome.
Here’s a thought: do you ever take any of your bikes off-road? I don’t recall seeing you doing that very much. Maybe take your Monkey on some open trails in your area. I don’t mean high-speed, hair-on-fire, motocross type $#!+, just casual exploring. I certainly like doing that on my Monkey. Might make for some more of those great photo-ops.
At any rate, whatever you decide to do, I agree that it should be fun. And if it’s not, taking a break is the right call. Thanks for the explanation, but know that even without it, it’s all good. Seeing a video of yours pop up on UA-cam after a long dry-spell is always a pleasant surprise. Looking forward to your next video… even if it’s a year from now. 😉

Oh. I've been wanting to ask someone like you. I've seen accounts start really small and low views. Then, all of a sudden, you see they have thousands of subs and views mysteriously change. So basically, they bought subscribers and views. Imo. It reeks of a personality disorder, but whatever. Usually, those accounts eventually stop creating or if they have a lot of disposable income they continue on. You can tell who's authentic and who's supporting their own neurosis. Any thoughts on this? My account is UA-cam algorithm cancer I think 🤭

    • @GasWorksISO
      @GasWorksISO  2 роки тому +3

Well.., I haven’t seen those channels personally, but I’m sure there’s some shady stuff going on. However, all it takes is for UA-cam to really start pushing your videos out there to have your channel really blow up. Most cases it only takes one video to hit it big to get traffic to start coming for your content. That doesn’t mean it’s gonna take off though. You need a back catalog of videos all those new viewers are going to want to watch, and subscribe for. Say for instance you make a video on mowing grass and it takes off big time.. If your channel isn’t about mowing grass and that’s the only video you did in that subject, your channel won’t grow because all those new viewers are there for mowing grass, not something else. So, you gotta focus your videos. Make them work together. That’s how channels grow organically. No shady stuff.

Just started out under an alternate account have a few hundred views couple of subs was hoping for more by now but 100% like you with being introverted, no real interest in being popular would like to have monetized videos but not interested in spending 20hrs of work for a video to get 50 views. I enjoy my non-work time riding to no where or chilling, Im doing IT work 8-5 and I dont want to do that anymore either. I have no interest in using a pc 18hrs a day. I get it, gotta put in effort to get out results, i dont know. and then I don’t know what I want to put effort in, music, showing of my mediocre gaming skills? Im not interested, is someone else gonna be?
I left Facebook cuz it felt like my mind was melting and I spend hours a day watching vids on this n that on here and Im feeling the same way like Im wasting my life just watching these
