    Land Rover has always had reliability issues (I’ve owned several). As a certified automotive technician, I have owned, driven and repaired many. They have placed in the bottom for dependability since the 70s. Technology/electronics wasn’t an issue through the 70s, 80s & 90s. Poor quality rubber components (often outsourced to India), poor quality plastic, (often outsourced to the lowest-bidder) and poor quality electrical components (electrical not electronic) are just a few of the common issues I have personal witnessed over the years. With over 30 experience, I can honestly say there are much more reliable/durable 4x4s available (usually for less money).

    The other issue with high end cars is that they’re always introducing new technology and mechanics in their cars. They rarely get to a place where they perfect their build. This is why Toyota’s and Honda’s have excellent reliability. They’ll continue to use the same engine through several generations. However, they’re not as exciting or fun to drive as luxury vehicles.

    Land Rovers reliability has been improving over the years. Definitely better than what it was in the early 2000s.

    I saw the TFL defender being sold by the dealership.... I asked them if they resolved the cylinder 3 miss fire and they did not reply to my email.

    I had a 2018 Velar R Dynamic for 3 years..... not 1 issue. Just got the 2021 DEFENDER 110 X Dynamic 4 months ago..... so far it has been amazing. I also have a 2020 Ford F250 I use for work, lots of small issues....... no matter who makes the car, there will always be lemons and ones that run for 300 k, just have to keep up on your maintenance.

    Everyone wants reliability. Even people who heavily modify their vehicles, doesn’t always workout that way but that’s the ultimate perk of a well sorted vehicle reliability.

    Couldn't agree with you more. I've owned Land Rover, Range Rover, Rover Jaguar, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, GM, Citroen, Nissan and more. Each and every one of them have had some kind of problem but as an example, my first Range Rover was a 1999 P38, purchased in 2004. I had it for six years and NO major breakdowns. My last Audi however was a 2012 A6 bought in 2015, I kept it for just over a year before selling it for spares. In just one year I had an EGR valve, a turbo, the ABS module, a window motor all fail. The final straw was the turbo failing a second time so I gave up on it. No, not all Audi's are bad either. I now have a 2018 Jaguar XFR bought new and the most expensive thing i've replaced is the oil and filters. Did you know there are Land Rovers built in the 1940's still in daily use.

    I owned an bmw x5 g05 for 5 months and have even more issues than rrs which i own about a year. I guess reliability is on depends on our own luck whether we pick a good one or bad one 😅

    I currently have a Velar P300. Had it from new, now 3 year old, 25,000 miles. On two 9r three occasions my lcd screen has frozen, however fixed itself next time engine started. Biggest problem is brake use. Disc and pad change every 10,000 miles at a cost of £500 a wheel. I've paid out £4,000 for 20,000 miles just on brakes. I note that the 2023 models have moved onto Brembo brakes. That will hopefully resolve the problem.

    My LR3 has 175k miles, no major issues, hardly even anything minor even after dozens of off road trips, an accident and skipping probably half of the recommended services. It’s amazing seeing other cars of the same age with fewer miles and they’ll have a bunch of little issues and things that do t work like buttons and worn seats... even after years with a Bernese mountain dog my interior is basically spotless somehow, it’s just so durable. Couldn’t be happier with it.

    I have a 2020 XE and I can agree with the assembly line sentiment. I had an issue where my center screens would go black and a little bit of the tach display as well. I noticed it happened more after car washes. It was obviously a module that was not communicating. Took the dealer a month to figure it out which was annoying but they were nice and gave me a loaner after a few days. Turned out to be a pinched wire in the rear bumper. They rerouted the wire and never had the issue again. I suspect that the wire was loose from the assembly line and after numerous underbody wash sprays pushing the wire up more caused it to catch onto something and get pinched. Cats don’t like water I guess lol also if you have the 20” rims on the XE do not use the pirellis P zeros. Absolute awful tire. Had to replace a whole set already cause of bubble in them.

    Bought a 2008 Range Rover Sport new in 2008 (4.4 V8 engine) and still drive it daily. Only issue in all that time was a transmission replacement (done under warranty) when a few months old. Other than that, it is has been 100% reliable. Had several 1990's Discoverys and they were horrible in every way, though.

    I have a 2020 RRS with the inline 6. Love it as well. Had a few random electronic glitches over the past year but I expected that going in. Love this car though. Statistically, I do think you’re more likely to have issues with a JLR product but I agree it shouldn’t be something that holds you back from getting one if you love the car otherwise. The defender is a brand new car with brand new electronic systems and engines so of course you are more likely to have issues in the first couple model years vs a 4Runner which hasn’t changed in basically a decade. That’s a big part of Toyota/Lexus secret btw- they are very slow to update things. Take a look at the new IS- basically the same interior and engines as the previous gen. Lexus GX is still sporting an infotainment system from like 2005! I get the “only buy Toyota” mentality if you only can afford one car and it absolutely has to get you to work each day. By all means then get a Corolla. But when you get into the luxury sector, let’s be honest most people only keep the cars for the warranty period. And if you want the latest greatest tech and performance, you’re going to be in the bleeding edge. Same thing with any of the European brands. I actually think the higher end Land Rover products feel better built/use better materials than much of the competition. My sports interior kind of reminds me (in a good way) of an old school Mercedes for example. So my sense is that yeah you might have a few more glitches during the warranty period than other brands but it’s really nothing worth getting bent out of shape about or buying a car you otherwise hate (for me that would be any current Lexus other than the new LC coupe). Like any bad reputation though, JLR would have to consistently deliver best in class reliability for 5 or more years to shake their bad rep. That’s just how it is.

    It’s true, a lot of people assume reliability problems for the rest of that cars lineup just because they see a couple issues.. it’s a big problem with pretty much all higher end car, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Range Rover, Bentley, everything higher end people have something to say about and half the time is also lack of maintenance, warm up times and gasoline uses. Then some cars actually have big problems, like BMWs from the mid 2000s E60/E66. Now those issues of the past follows them into the 2010s.. now all modern BMWs are plagued with the reliability problems that actually don’t exist.

    How can anyone make a comment on reliability when a vehicle is less than 3 to 5 years old? Records on reliability are rarely determined by the first owner or a vehicle under warranty. Reliability is determined after about 150000 km's and that is usually when a luxury car starts to have issues mostly due to its complexity. Land Rovers are beautiful vehicles and a person can buy these fairly cheap on the used car market when they are around 10 years old. But the new owner has to be prepared to spend a fair amount of money restoring the vehicle with new parts. Personally I think its still worth it because they are very nice to drive. I have a 2010 LR2, built on the same chasis as the Volvo XC platform. But things go on these trucks prematurely IMO. But considering what they can be bought for they see worth the price. A Similar Lexus costs twice as much on the used car market and yes they will need less initial parts replacement but they get old and need maintenance just like any other vehicle
