  • Logic Pro X version 10.7 brought us the ability to natively mix and export our sessions in Dolby Atmos. In order to access these new features in Logic Pro, we need to adjust a few settings. Once we make these changes we will be ready to start mixing our tracks for Dolby Atmos and Apple Spatial Audio.

    Do we need to install Dolby Atmos Renderer

    hey man, really enjoying your videos. question.. im working on a film mix and doing it in logic. i want to render it out in 5.1. have you done any film/video work requiring a 5.1 delivery? and if so, do you have a video you could create on setting that up? the mixing was all done in stereo, so i guess im needing to change the project to 5.1.? Any ideas? Cheers

      Hey Kevin. It's been a few years but I could add that video topic to the list. I've only done one. It was a 15 minute short film a friend of mine did with wall to wall music (think like old cartoons, very Carl Stalling). I wrote and scored all the music and we did the original mixes in stereo and afterwards decided to do a 5.1 version as well. If I recall I duplicated all the sessions for each track and remixed for surround.
      I'd have to dig the files out of my archive and go over them to remember exactly what I did. And yes, you'd have to set your session for 5.1 for sure.

    Same concept for mixing movie in Atmos in logic Pro?

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  4 місяці тому

      Yes and no. It depends on which concept you're speaking too. Film and TV have hard rules that mixing music doesn't necessarily have to follow. We can go down the rabbit hole if you want =)

    What version of Logic Pro X was this feature first available in?

    my instrument tracks always go out of synch if I turn them into 3d objects however audio tracks as 3d objects play perfectly in time. Bed tracks are fine. Any ideas why?

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Рік тому +1

      I haven’t experienced that at all either with the renderer built into Logic or the Dolby renderer.
      Are you getting any errors popping up or can you just hear that the track is delayed once switched to an object?

    • @dannykirsch
      @dannykirsch Рік тому

      @@EverythingMusicRecording nonerrors come up. I can just hear it. It’s not relayed but in fact early. Only with 3d object instrument tracks though. Do you recommend using Logic Pro’s built in Dolby atmos feature or logic with the official Dolby atmos renderer? Is the latter a bit time consuming to use though?

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Рік тому +1

      No errors eh? Weird. I’ll try to see if I can find an answer later today.
      As for the Dolby Renderer. It depends on one’s needs really. There are things you can do in Dolby’s that you cannot currently do in Logics version at all. The big one being setting fold down levels and how things fold down. Logics settings are not the recommended settings for music, which is odd really. Also with the Dolby renderer you can export an MP4 file to check your mix on other systems. I’ve been doing this to check mixes on my 5.1.2 setup in my living room. You cannot currently do this in Logic either. The only other way I am aware of is via Amazon Web Services. Dolby also has a beta for PHRTF which I’ve grabbed already. Doesn’t make a big difference but it’s a start.
      The pro to using the renderer in Logic is being able to hear the apple spatial version without having to bounce.
      Setup was pretty easy. I had a couple hiccups that I couldn’t find answers for online but I managed to figure it out. I think within maybe two hours I had everything sorted out. I’ll have to do a video on all of this. It’s on my list. Likely in the next week or two 🙂

      @@EverythingMusicRecording thank you so much for your comprehensive answer. In the logic version would you suggest printing binaural fold downs with the Dolby renderer or apple renderer selected?

    • @EverythingMusicRecording
      @EverythingMusicRecording  Рік тому +1

      No worries Danny. Happy to help.
      The only time you would need to print out a binaural version would be if you wanted to check a mix on headphones via a playback system that ISN’T Atmos ready. If the playback system is Atmos ready then it should know you have headphones plugged in and automatically play back in binaural. That’s the beauty of Atmos. It adapts to the playback system via a single ADM BFW file, so you don’t need to export different versions. It’s all self contained. That’s the difference between Atmos and say Dolby Digital.
      But you should be checking both apple’s special and dolbys binaural. I personally think apples sounds better. It sounds more like “a record” but I still check both.
      But either way, in order to bounce an Atmos mix to check on another system you need Dolby’s renderer. There is a 90-day free trial btw which is what I’m currently using. If you export the ADM BFW file out of Logic the only way you can play that file is in another DAW or the Dolby renderer.
      You could just do a regular bounce tho. I haven’t tested that with binaural, but I had to upgrade my Apple TV to the 4K model so it would spit Atmos out to my 5.1.2 receiver. Before that I would do a regular surround bounce so I could at least check a mix bounced to a 5.1 Dolby digital format.
      I hope that all made sense. I hurt my back and just took back meds so I’m getting a little foggy. If it didn’t all make sense or you have more questions, feel free to ask Danny 🙂
