A good video, Chris. You described how microtonal subtle imperfections over perfect pitching within note transitions leaves the original vibe and flavour the vocalist wanted to deliver. Pitch correction should never be done a 100% unless you want some special robotic effect on the vocals. This goes for even flutes or other bowed instruments as well when you need to tune them.

Thanks Chris. I finished going segment by segment on a vocal yesterday. Probably over did corrections but I did it without artifacts. Lots of splitting and tweaking! This video makes the process much clearer! Thanks!

Nice one! Probably going to watch later, but rule 1 is obviously use Cubase Variaudio :) I do find doing format correction with more extreme moves (whole notes and larger) really helps as well when you're working on harmony stacks. I am generally a lot gentler with things like smoothing, pitch correction on lead vocals, and more heavy handed on harmonies/ backing vocals for tightness.

I personally use Melodyne. I find it to be quite transparent and forgiving. I still want to get better at it though. I will occasionally end up with weird artifacts. It's usually on the S's and other sibilant consonants.
Generally if a word or two can't be tuned and have it sound natural, I find it simplest to just punch in for that word. But I have that luxury. I'm the singer on my tracks. It's obviously not as simple to do a punch in if you're mixing someone else's work.
Also, I agree that you have to use your ears. I can't tell you how many times a note sounded great in context but Melodyne told me it was completely "wrong." This is especially true when a singer sings a note quickly before sliding up or down to another note. Often they're WAY off. But if it didn't jump out to you before analyzing it on screen.

Another gem Chris, I love using this on monophonic instruments as well. Retaining the nuances of a performance is key as you alluded. Powerful is an understatement where VariAudio is concerned, I sense an Audiowarp video coming ; ) Cheers dude

I use Melodyne to tune my bass guitar and even guitars if I'm not playing chords. There is a polyphonic function, but it doesn't do so well with picking out the right notes. Too many overtones or something.
This is really helpful if you have an instrument that's set up a bit poorly or a musician who's not the best player. Heck, even if you are a good player, it's easy to bend a note 10 cents sharp in the middle of an otherwise good performance.
It's great to have tools like this.

I didn't know about the straightening range on the vibrato part, thank you for the education! Normally I use the the key of the song to set the notes and then do the adjustments.

Hi Chris, appreciate your small changes on the vocal pitches and agree that the "raw material" must have a certain quality to finally get good results with the varioaudio-tool. This ist the best case to do that. I tend to firstly get everything close to pitch with the "correct pitch" slider to get into detail afterwards. But anyway, there are many ways to deal with it. Thanks for the info. Cheers.

Do you have any tips on bleed when pitch correcting for example vocal tracks from a band live recording?

  • @John2009R
    @John2009R Рік тому

Lots of good info here. I never think to slice up long notes like you do. On that last long rising note I would probably have moved the tilt anchor all the way to one side and level it from the other end, then adjust the pitch, but your slicing way worked well.

After last update Cubase released Melodene in essential version, I like to use both Variaudio and Melodyne, different algorithms give different possibilities but Melodyne in this version has no curve adjustment

nice video but you are missing the coolest feature in Vari Audio where you can tune to the chord track. It makes it so easy to tune your vocals and guitars etc to the correct key if you are not too comfortable with scales like me

Thanks Chris for another great video.
    2 quick questions:
    1. I understand creating "buffer" when straightening few segments at ones to keep the transitions smooth. But what when you for example lower in pitch one segment in the middle (and leave the previous and next ones intact). Should you create same buffer as well? Or when changing pitch of segments transition will stay smooth?
    2. When dealing with longer notes what's the advantage of tuning the note first, then cutting it into pieces and the snapping those pieces to the note instead of just only moving the whole segment in pitch?
    Thank you

Been listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magic, by the chilli peppers.... And at first I was not acclimated to the bluesy off pitch style. But as I've been listening to it more again.... It's crazy good. It's insane what we're doing with pitch. We're neutering music..... We're taking the soul out of vocals too much. Not everyone. But it's messed with our perception. Modern music on general. So much of it. I like what you're doing here with this song. Reminds me a little of the Cars and other cool 80's pop rock.

Hi Chris ! I use Cubase 12 to mix and master almost all my audio projects. Only that I've ran into a little problem. I recorded a Christmas Carol with my fiancee and the problem is that she cannot hit a few notes I mean the right way. So I tryed to fix her problem with VariAudio but still not what I was hopping for. How can I fix this and make her sound more natural without sounding robotic?
