KB is their name and talking about old animation is their game! If you want deep analysis and history on the realm of retro anime and old animation, then you've come to the right place. Be warned though. Being a possum means he loves consuming trash, media-based or otherwise. - Фільми й анімація
Couple of things to add: Magnetic Rose is like an anime supergroup, there is literally 5 top tier talents working in key roles on its production: Direction from Koji Morimoto (who's shorts are some of the best in surrealist animation you'll see anywhere just search for his name on youtube), Writing by Satoshi Kon (who needs no introduction), Animation Direction / Design from Hiroyuki Okiura (director of Jin Roh and one of the absolute best "realist" animators in the entire industry), Music by Yoko Kanno (again no introduction) and finally an original story and creative force behind this project Katsuhiro Otomo. I don't think we'll see this level of "anime dream team" ever again in the industry!
Aww man! Was so focused on Morimoto, Kon and Kanno's involvement I totally forgot that this was also a huge stepping stone Okiura's career as well. Thanks for reminding me!
@@KaiserBeamz You still did great! Its so much to cover :).
grateful for getting introduced to satoshi kon (rip) and yoko kanno through magnetic rose. it's up there with the seventh seal in terms of all time great cinema. everyone who worked on it is (or was) brilliant.
@@KaiserBeamzI have been a fan of your videos for several years now is it possible you can do a special feature video comparison between anime of the 80's,90's and 2000's how the art style evolved and certain genre I noticed robot anime popular in 70's to early 2000's got suddenly replaced and saturated by Isekai genre andwhat are your thoughts on so called 'American' anime like Avatar:The Last Airbender,Boondocks,RWBY,Castlevania,Yasuke or Batman TAS it would be nice to here your thoughts on this as I notice your love for classics in the 80's and 90's (I still like hand drawn animation)
Magnetic Rose is so good it needs to be it’s own film.
This anthology is a masterpiece of animation. Cannon Fodder has got to be one of the best short films I've ever seen. I wish more anime took the stylistic risks of Cannon Fodder, both in storytelling and the visual style being so different. Like something out of a children's book but drawn by demons. Really enjoyed listening to your thoughts on these 3 great shorts!
Its take insperation from Europan comic style.
Same, I also wish Katsuhiro Otomo didn't give up on 2D animation...
Magnetic Rose is easily one of the most haunting Anime I've ever seen so far.
Since I had an unusual early exposure to a wide range of anime titles while growing up as a kid in the 80's I have a particular fondness for the older animation from that time period. This channel hits that nostalgic button for me so well. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this channel a few months back as it is totally up my alley.
Magnetic Rose is as genre defining as Akira, and distances itself from other stand alone productions by a significant margin. Its like the Tarkovsky of Anime' in my opinion.
Its tartakovsky
@@supme7558you are kidding, right?... tell me it was a joke.
I saw Memories years ago and, when I saw the movie Ghost Ship, I immediately remembered Magnetic Rose because it is the same plot: A place you know you need desperately leave but you can't do it.
100% agree about Kon. Every time I watch something of his, I still can't believe he died so early in his career. I honestly think that if he'd lived longer, he'd truly be remembered among the greats of animation like Disney and Miyazaki.
Those who know, definitely know
The amount of heartbreak Kaiserbeamz put into that summation of Magnetic Rose almost brought me to tears, no joke.
The definition of bittersweet, we lament his passing but celebrate what he did give us.
For a couple of minutes UA-cam tell me that the video was "unwatchable" from my country.
I cried like a baby X-D
But now it's all fine, and i can watch your masterpiece 🥰
This channel should be a heck of a lot bigger than it is, I can’t get enough of this content!
I love Stink Bomb, and i specially love the final punch line
I hated the stinky guy so much 😅😂
Hand drawn animation has somewhat unfairly been overshadowed by computer animation.
Congrats on the five years! I've only started watching you in the last year thanks to a recommendation from my brother, but I love your videos. Hope you are able to continue to make more videos in the future! Happy anniversary!
Thanks for the video. It's always a pleasure hearing well thought through reviews of these masterpieces. 👏👏
Thanks for making 5 years worth of content and I hope you keep going at least 5 more! You have a very sharp critical mind and a clear passion for animation and the people involved in making these works. Some of the very best video essays on YT in this series.
Happy anniversary, KB! This was well done, as is everything you touch over here. I started watching the Merrie Melodies series out of boredom during the holidays and found myself riveted by it!
Happy 5th anniversary KB! Been a fan of your work since Robot Carnival and have been loving your work since then. Made me love anime like Nuku Nuku, Mystery of Mamo, Dezaki's work, and tons of classic anime that I now know why they are loved and talked about till this day. Thanks for being a great reviewer, historical professor, and overall a great person.
Absolute masterpiece. Thanks for the solid rundown as usual
Congratulations on 5 excellent years of content creation. Your channel is so well researched and edited it's really an achievement just to have kept up your release schedule.
So glad I found your channel. Incredible video.
One of the few works I’ve seen before the review. They definitely deserve to be known and remembered more. The stink short was on my mind, but memories blew me away. Never knew Kon was connected.
Congratulations on 5 years, you've earned every subscriber. :)
Thanks for all the great work these last 5 years! What a better way to celebrate anime criticism than this masterpiece too!
What a great review of a timeless classic!
Hi man i stumble upon your channel by chance last year and i fall in love by your style and manners thanks for bringing old and unknow anime to me and as for the review itself i bought memories last year in blueray and its the same version you show in the video amazing.
Keep the good job.
Thx for all your videos🎉
Thank you for reviewing Memories! I'm lucky enough to have friends with amazing taste who showed it to me about a year ago. Completely agree with your ranking of the segments - Magnetic Rose is an unbelievable standout.
Honestly you're one of the best anime channels on UA-cam. Period.
thank you for the new video. i miss your vintage reviews
Her memories/Magnetic rose is my favorite in this anime anthology.
Ok, you have convinced me to check this out, and probably buy the Blu-ray. This looks and sounds amazing.
Happy 5th KB!
Here's to another 5 yrs of retro anime videos!
This was a great and very impactful anthology. I rented it from Blockbuster back in the day and was like ..... WOW
Great video, thank you!
Happy Five Year Anniversary! I hope to see more
I saw thumbnail, subscribe, went to watch the movie and now I’m back.
I actually want to thank you for the great suggestion. Absolute masterpiece
I say they should've went with the initial ending for Stink Bomb. It just makes a whole lot more sense than the final product.
Freezing than isolating him on a remote island for the rest of his days, instead of killing him, would’ve been a bittersweet ending (bitter in that the protagonist is forever isolated and has to come to terms that he’s a living bio-weapon, while the Japanese and US military will most likely keep him alive to test/experiment with him; sweet in that he’s alive and contained/isolated, no longer being a danger to humanity).
Though, the actual ending is darkly hilarious in how ridiculous the protagonist was able to get all the way to his superiors unscathed, and that said superiors faced their own hubris by having their mishap of a bio-weapon (it was mostly their fault for making the weapon and leaving out in the open for anyone to find) make it to them regardless of their efforts to stop/contain it.
This Channel is amazing love your fascinating look backs at Classic Animes and Animations like Looney Tunes.
Also, Talk about The Animatrix!
Here's to hopefully another five more years! All the best to you as well, good sir.
nice video. love all your videos
Happy 5th year. Literally paused this video essay 4 minutes in to go watch it (for free on Tubi) before continuing on. Never did that before, and wow! Great suggestion, going to share it with friends.
I quite enjoy Stink Bomb's ending, I had a good laugh from it.
Happy channel anniversary KB, still have yet to see all your videos, but I've had on hell of a time.
I don't think the second part's end is that off putting. That short is a comedy. It's the punchline. High octane comedy goes for the ridiculous and doesn't need step by step logic for certain gags. Great video in general on this film! That's just the defense I always toss into the ring for the 2nd short.
I watched this a couple months back with some friends as part of a big anime triple feature along with robot carnival and neo Tokyo. It was crazy how each anthonlogy kept getting better and better, with us ending with Memories. Also watching cannon fodder was driving me insane because I was just yelling "CUT ALREADY".
Back in the 1990s, I first encountered "Magnetic Rose" in the form of the absolutely classic Anime Music Video scored to the techno remix of Phantom of the Opera. It's on UA-cam, don't miss it!
I'd like to commend you on splicing in just a few seconds of Rebel Without a Cause and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I immediately realised and understood the influence those movies had on Otomo. I legit had to take a moment as flashbacks of Akira filled my head.
oh my god, i saw the short of the guy that stinks on cartoon network brazil when i was little, i could never find it to see it again!
I remember being traumatized!
Quick tip! Eschew (ess-CHOO) means to avoid using the thing. Askew (as-KYU) means crooked or tilted.
I've seen Magnetic Rose about 20 times. I've seen the other parts twice.
Congrats! I love your reviews and i love older anime lol i can never get tired binging your content or listening to your anime history lessons lol side note saw this for the first time last year i thought it was really good but the didn't like how the first story ended tho
its been a wild ride, and will absolutely continue to be.
love how you Include Uncle Go work when relevant to your analysis. Still waiting for a full fledge Mazinger Z and Getter Robo video, influence, legacy, toy impact etc...
Great video
yo , this video is amazing
Magnetic Rose is amazing and makes me wish it gets a full film. And I am thankful for discotek for releasing this masterpiece to help it be more accessible.
Interesting hearing that Mark Swint plays Heinz. I know Swint best from working with Bennett the Sage on Anime Abandon. Bennett has stated that Memories, Magnetic Rose specifically, is his favorite anime. Just a neat little connection.
Happy 5th anniversary!
Happy 5th anniversary!
But after 3 years of knowing your channel. I still don't know that opening theme
magnetic rose reminds me of beyond the Aquila rift.. both are phenomenal short animations
Thank you for bringing old anime for new audiences! I've been watching Gunbuster, Dirty Pair, and Escaflowne so far and I want to explore more.
There alot of younger generation disliked Gunbuster because it too fanservicey for them, whenever i recommended it too them, also back in late 2000s when i recommended them romance anime/manga like Emma Victorian Romance, they called it boring
Happy 5th anniversary KB!! And another amazing video on top of amazing videos of yours!
Thank you for this review. I saw Memories when it came out and back then I considered it such a deviation from what anime *was supposed to be* as anime was Slayers, Tenchi Muyo and bright happy stuff. Since then I've only seen Magnetic Rose pop up in AMVs and video essays about Anime Being Art Actually. Thanks to this review I have reevaluated my thoughts on this anthology and I've found a new respect for it. It's not just the Sweaty Guy kills half of Japan movie anymore.
I came across this movie on accident and i was amazed when i watched it. I came across a clip from stink bomb showing how overly animated the soldiers were.
It's also free on Retro Crush and Tubi. So why would you not watch it?
Aw, I love the ending of Stink Bomb.
Cannon Fodder doesn't look much like "anime" to me, which I know is a pointless statement
But if you told me it was British animation, or like 80s American adult animation I would probably believe you
I'm still pissed that I missed Magnetic rose when it was free on youtube last year! Congrats on the anniversary!
you could, you know, always torrent it in 4k in a few minutes. or stream it on one of the few hundred thousands free movie sites that exist.
FYI Memories is currently available to stream for free on Tubi (along with some other classic anime films). At one point it was on retrocrush too, but I don't see it now
Seems like it's on Tubi, for anyone who wants to know.
24:00
The dad from Cannon Town is giving me serious Donovan Desmond (Spy x Family) vibes...
maybe an ancestor, lol
29:59 - Gundam MS 008 have a similar aprouch!!! I call that gundam flick a natal tale as same like Batman 2 (Burton) and Die Hard rsrs
Having lived through Covid, Stink Bomb reads completely different these days. What used to be utterly ridiculous is surprisingly realistic. The idiocy/stubbornness of Typhoid Mary used to seem like an extreme outlier, but I literally know more than one person who pulled the same crap she did.
Keep up the great work Kaiser.
Dubbed? Come on man. :) I have my favorites in the order they're presented. First time I watched Cannon Fodder, I was falling asleep. I appreciate it a lot now, but it was a slough when I watched it the first time through. The soundtrack is a masterpiece. I do hate how the subs did make it seem like people fell asleep instead of dying. It's totally crazy. Don't know why they did that. Did the US distributers think so much death would make the rating different? Love Magnetic Rose. It's such a masterpiece. The story and memories of Heinz's daughter, just heartbreaking. The animation still holds up so well, IMO.
Goddamnit! You need to figure out a way to do a spoiler free set-up for films you are recommending.
The top TOP animes achieve something that other "cartoons " or (western)animation fail or have difficulty to do: With no sound or subtitles in the first seconds/mins in, just by the SUBLIME drawings and attention to detail they command you to sit the F @ # K down and watch it! This is art at the highest level and it's almost lost...
Finally
I noticed in cannon fodder the SS symbol on one of the walkways
I hope you do Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust one day.
I had no idea they had dubbed this.
5:00 I’ve watched a lot of things in foreign languages that I can’t understand but there’s context clues
What's the background music for otomos history?
I'm still waiting for the 4k.
Literally one of the best things to watch whilst on ketamine
stink bomb was a needed bit of comic relief after magnetic rose.
I'll either be here in 5 years or I'll be dead.
Where did you discover Otomo's comment about Nobuo in island?
32.7k subs and 75k views for a 48 minute long video is unfair even though I didn't begin watching yet. People got more with less. UA-cam is unfair. Best of luck to you!
30:38 you said if the "Lunch Time" soundtrack was a staple from a 90s children media. Can you tell me the title?
Discotek is doing God's work.
44:44 isnt that the engineer guy from BennettTheSage?
Music starting from 0:00 through your introduction ?
... When did Discotek release the dub? 2021? Because if Swint's involved in the cast, I'm reminded that he did have a hand in a review of it in 2015. Leading to being in said dub an interesting return to an old frustration.
can anyone tell me why the number 17 turns up in his films?
I'd like that animation and story telling. with a more happy theme.
Hey, does anyone know the name of the background music that's played at the beginning? Because I really like it😃
All music played in the background is listed in the credits.
@@KaiserBeamz thank you, plus I found the original song it was sampled from & it's so gorgeous for music in my opinion😃
Magnetic rose gave me post anime depression
Happy fifth anniversary to the channel!!
47:35 No KB, thank you!😉
Akira the first anime i owned
Didn't know there was a good dub. I own the DVD with subs. Maybe I wanna eat and watch and be able to hear English. Thanks for the heads up
