THANK YOU SO MUCH for mentioning where I can watch it! I was really hoping that someone had uploaded it IN FULL to UA-cam, but as of this comment it is not here. ☹️ _ETA:_ I just got to the part in the video where it mentions Tubi having this film. Thank you, @ Jumpreport!
Of course, but I figured if I titled it “Magnetic Rose Analysis” or something less intriguing UA-cam’s ass algorithm’s wouldn’t have given the video much of a chance and at least amongst my friends I’m really the only one who knows about this film. Big goal was to get Magnetic Rose to as big of an audience as possible and if that meant pleasing UA-cam, 🤷♂️ And I haven’t seen Cannon Fodder but stylistically and aesthetically it looks good!
When you consider the weight and space limitations and restrictions aboard any spacecraft or station, wide open spaces and polished stone columns like you see in that opera hall are even more extravagant and affluent than they would be even in a crowded city. That vessel or station was clearly built and designed for _extreme_ luxury and opulence.
Interesting observation! I feel like Taylor would be able to afford a ship like that with how many racks he makes + a realistic holographic projection of Misato from Eva
Man, you gave me a nice good perspective of this. I always thought it was mostly about letting go of the past and accepting the present and future. But your comment on obsession is good and made me think more of this masterpiece. It’s rare to find a post about this episode going on a deep dive, let alone a whole video. So thank you for making this.
You're welcome! This is my favorite anime short film so with this video, I aimed to pack in as much about this film as I could! Also, here is a link to an article I used for researching Satoshi Kon. Don't know if you've seen this already but I hope it helps! union.fsu.edu/movies/blog/SatoshiKon
All three of the stories despite their differences in setting, mood and characters are horror stories. Magnetic Rose: Sci-Fi Horror Stink Bomb: Comedy Horror (A Dark Comedy) Cannon Fodder: Dystopian Horror. And it’s some of the best anime horror I’ve ever seen!
Watched the film a few years ago. Enjoyed your intelligent and articulate review. Good to see younger people like you being able to appreciate art like this. 👏
Glad you enjoyed it. Magnetic Rose for the most part feels so timeless, so I hope with this video, more people of my age will be exposed to this film too!
Good analysis, definitely missed a few details you pointed out! especially with the ending, I had the impression that the ship wasn't destroyed but I wasn't too sure, now thematically it makes sense for it not to be.
According to a Japanese Wikipedia and scans of the manga I saw online - ony Magnetic Rose is based on a story from the manga. Other two are not in there
This might be the fourth video I've seen in my feed with a title similar to "Magnetic Rose: A Forgotten Masterpiece(that you never heard of)". Its scriptwriter is Satoshi Kon. So yes, people know about it, it's just that it's a serious film without over the top action and superpowers. Similar to why Jin-Roh is not as popular as Gundam.
The biggest flaw of magnetic rose is that it's the first short film in an anthology and therefore puts the other films in the collection down. No matter what comes after this first film there's no way you can top that
True, I’m sure there’s people out there who think the other films are great but I’m sure 90 percent of the people who watched this were in it for magnetic rose
Recently watched it, and gosh was it amazing. Magnetic rose was wonderful, cannon fodder is subtle but effective, and i find that stink bomb was terrifying in its own peculiar way. Sad it’s so underrated, I’ll be sure to tell my friends. :)
@@jumpreport not sure if a clickbait is the best tactic, that kind of stuff makes me want to come, leave a comment and never come back. That's rather short sighted strat but whatever
Just watched it. Honestly, it feels like a dime-a-dozen vague psychedelic trip. Heavy nonsensical storytelling (or rather, lack of), no context for their technology level (how did the guy who was just chiding his partner "What, you never seen a hologram before or something?" not realize the illusion of his family was a hologram?! That's some real wheelchair vegetable level incompetence). It never explains if they were supposed to actually be supernatural ghosts or if it was some form of mind digitization (certainly they'd be aware of such technology), or why that caused her to go insane, OR how her ship was able to generate magnetic fields stronger than anyone there can even comprehend, to the point where the magnetic field was literally ripping apart ships (which would take "literal star going super nova" levels of astronomical extremes). They never even hinted at nanotechnology, which is the only way she could have made the family-breakfast-table scene, which should have been an immediate giveaway for the dude who was subjected to it, yet he never gave any indications of comprehending what was happening. And if this lady was THAT rich, and had mysteriously disappeared in her spaceship-city-of-over-the-top-extravagance 60 years prior to "present day" for the salvage dudes, how had no one heard of her? Hell, if there were some guy back in the 1960s who left on his own personal man-made NYC-sized luxury cruise ship that makes the Titanic look like a tic-tac compared to Mt. Everest, you can best bet literally EVERYONE would have heard about him even in this day and age! There's no WAY they wouldn't know her story, the shape, appearance, and scale of her ship, the technology on board, and how to identify it if they came across it. And the ending... Talk about dissatisfying!

not everyone will like "Stink Bomb", i think. but i don't care what others say, but i think it's good.
Cannon Fodder has some things to say
Great review. Ironically watched the short film during the Corona season 😄. A masterpiece. And I'm not even a hardcore anime fan.
Thank you! And yeah, great film that’s deserving of its praise

so weird maybe but this one reminded me a LOT of Event Horizon in the delusions and atmosphere in many scenes
Lol love that movie, thankfully this short was a little less crazy and gory but regardless both are great films
I see it
Man, every 50, 60, so forth, animes are forgotten.
@GETEHR WOLF me too.

I’ve seen the clips of the one guy trying to save his daughter from the roof but I never knew the name of it so thanks for helping me find it

Funny that _Alien_ was one of Mr. Kon's favorite movies.
The SFX artist responsible for the Xenomorph's head effects was one Carlo Rambaldi (RIP).
