Always wondered why Naruto is legally available on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and even UA-cam. But each with a different number of episodes. Guess viz sub licensed different amounts.
this always annoyed me, along with the fact netflix has both naruto sub and dub, but for the longest time it was incomplete- has almost all of the movies including the shippuden ones, but excluding The Last, and the shippuden series itself for some reason - and Hulu has all of naruto and naruto shippuden, but not all of the dub for shippuden - they had to be high when they licensed the series, and there’s probably more weird inconsistencies on other services
The production of this video is really good as others have mentioned. Props to UA-cam for recommending a channel I’m likely to watch and keep up the good work!
Yes it really is and I can say this industry is harsh and cutthroat as it says still good parts on this and good video takes a lot just to work in this or any other business.
the company Kaze was the biggest licensor here in Germany, they even had their own streaming service called Anime on Demand. Now Crunchyroll bought Kaze and shut down AOD and there are a lot of shows still missing on Crunchyroll that used to be on AOD.
Kaze was a French company. They also did some horrible and strongly memed dub in Italian with voice actor that couldn't even speak the language, it's also mentioned in their wikipedia page (I'm Italian)
btw it's good thing that kyoto animation rarely produce anime outside the one that actually published. which means they have more control to the production including budget. because of that they have better working conditions than other studio
This was a really fun video and super interesting, hope you get a bigger audience soon, and I would love for you to do more videos diving into the rabbit hole you uncovered making this one!
Two corrections: Viz used to be owned exclusively by Shogakukan, but in the early 2000s, they switched to being owned by a holding company that includes Shogakukan and Shueisha. They are not (or at least weren't when I kept track) exclusively owned by Shueisha. Also the streaming services will own the license for streaming, but they don't necessarily sub-license to the ones who make the hard media (BD/DVD/etc) versions of the show. A company that makes hard media can license directly from the Japanese production committee. The only question is will they license the translation from the streaming company or just have it retranslated?
Absolute banger video. When i saw the stick figure at the very beginning i was like "Oh this is gonna be another low-quality video essay" but no. The production quality is off the charts, especially for a channel this new. Keep it up man.
Amazing video , please do cover all the other tangents you couldn't do in this video , it's surprising to see this level of quality content from a channel that has less than 1000 subscribers
to me the biggest eye opener for me was that Anime is mainly made to just promote the Mangas lol one day i think Anime will surpass Manga just how movies surpassed books
Speaking of creative names of production committees, the original Spice and Wolf one was just "Spice & Wolf Production Committee", but the remake did the creative choice of using "Rowen Trading Guild"! Couldn't help but grin when I saw that.
Incredible, I finally feel like I understand some of how this corporate nightmare works even if you didn't go into as much detail as you could have, like you mentioned. Great quality, easily digestible video and the simplified graphics helped me keep track. Excited to see what else you post, good job!
Wow I didn't check the amount of subscribers you had until I finished the video and I have to say I was surprised! This video is extremely well done and makes all of the info you explained interesting as well. Keep up the good work man and I look forward to see what other videos you post in the future!
Incredible video, deserves way more views. Would love to see more videos on the topics you mentioned being for another time as well as for other entertainment mediums such as video games.
This was a WONDERFULLY well-researched video about the companies that have made/produced/licensed/distributed our favorite anime. Keep it up and thank you for sharing this with us :)
What an incredible pitch for a channel. I very rarely subscribe to new people these days. Been 25 years on this platform. You got something special. I Instantly subscribed after that video. Lookin forward to those stories for another day!
I don't think this is useless information - it is important to know that if we ever want to change media production to a more sustainable industry for workers and creators.
Damn, this is amazing! I want to see more! Especially the Netflix situation (still mind-blowing that Netflix Originals don't involve Netflix as a producer)!
Thank you for enlightening us who didn't know, but wanted to know how it mostly worked in the background. I will watch your career with great interest.

Well done. I now know just a little more. It is so interesting, we all enjoy the shows but never wonder how they get to the screen. I’m now down the rabbit hole with you and can’t wait to see where it leads.
Great video. Something anyone looking to deal with a publisher in their lives should learn from. I hope that in the future, A.I will do in-betweens and basic coloring and even lighting, so we'll all be able to create our own studios, go directly to streamers/audiences and undercut the production companies and publishers.

This was a very insightful and well done video and has me looking forward to all those stories for another times 😂 First video Ive seen of yours but already got a sub out of me
Just adding more information for Asia region licensing: Licensing in Asia (outside Japan and Middle East) are usually bought by single company that doesn't even have streaming service, like IMMG, Ani-One, Aniplus, or Muse Communication. They often sublicensing their IP to several streaming service, that's why a single anime often available for five different streaming services. English Asia release often to be the most close 1:1 translation, while local languages (like Indonesian, Chinese, or Thai) might have slighly have more freedom in their translation to match local culture. English Asia being 1:1 translation is because there's no way to cater to single cultural reference, as area served can have thousands of cultures, ethnics, religions, and contradicting rule of laws. So they play safe and release things without censorship at all. Company like Muse Communication and Ani-One even have UA-cam channel to streaming anime either for free to paid-subscription only, which not every committee production doesn't always want to have certain anime to be streamed on UA-cam. There are unique case where Muse Asia license Tokyo Revengers and the committee production demands the swastika to be censored. Muse Asia argue that swastika has neutral (or even positive) meaning in SEA, Taiwan, and South Asia, so the censorship is not needed. Shogakukan have Shogakukan Asia (based in Singapore) which license their own title (and some other publisher) in English for English Asia release.
why dont animation studios ask for a royalty instead of a straight contract. that way the anime gets made on a budget, but if the studio does a great job and make it look good, they can also reap the rewards by getting more money to pay the artists. that way we get good quality with no compromises.
Very informative video with easy to understand explanations. Well done! Hope to see more videos from you about the inner-workings of the anime industry.
Gotta love exclusive licensing. Why don't we want a CR, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, AND Disney+ memberships all at once to watch them legally? We all have money for a dozen subscriptions.
Hey, would all those stories for another time be made into videos for another time? I'm already salivating right now. Never smashed that button so hard in years.
I don’t get why these companies don’t use all the money they make to make the experience for users better. When pirating is easier, faster, cheaper and better than why would anyone pay for hard to deal with, slow, expensive worse experiences?
So if a production committee allocates a budget to a studio, and that anime rakes in massive profits, do the studio get a part of the profits to pay their animators further or is all the money that animators are paid only from the decided budget initially?
In most cases, the animators and studio wouldn't get paid further because they were contracted, and are paid from the decided budget. That is unless the studio was on the committee, in which case they would be entitled to a share of the profits, depending on how much they invested. Of course every case is different, but this is how it works most of the time.
Really well made video. Definitely on the way to having your channel tickle the algorithms fancy. As someone that's not a UA-camr my main tips would be to change your channel name/branding and speak with a more stimulated fast past tone.
