  • Building a custom bike is never cheap, but many of us mountain bikers still do it despite the cost (even if it's only in our imagination)! It seems like there is no end to how much money a custom bike can cost, but Isaac Mundy and Rich Payne think they have managed to create what they believe to be the most expensive bike build in the world using available-to-purchase parts!

Exactly my thought. I owned a set of those wheels on my XC race bike and traded them for Reserve 28 XCs because i thought they where to stiff, even for my race bike. They would totally break them.

You could up the sum easily by more than 2k with an Actofive P-Train frame. The price is 6750€ without a shock. Its fully cnc machined out of an aluminum block, stunningly beautiful and you can choose your anodization color (for even more money).
Edit: Fun fact since you mentioned that Trickstuff also comes from Freiburg: Cornelius Kapfinger was the original Trickstuff engineer who helped develop their brakes, I think he also helped develop the Maxima. He has his own brake now - The Intend Trinity which lives in the same price bracket.

If your getting the rear shock tuned you may as well do the same with the fork and buy it through Rulezman in Italy, only €3500.....
While your at it buy the axs drivetrain and shifter through Hopp carbon parts - €1300 for the mech and shifter, and that's for the older version so opens up options on the drivetrain for pricier compatible parts.

I ride with rev grips for last 3 years. Love them. I had constant pain in my left hand after a bad crush. Grips helped me to keep on riding while healing instead of taking a break. For me $100 is not that much money for little extra comfort on 6K bike. BTW I also have that bottle cage. Dunno why it is $118. It is listed at $80 here in US and I paid about $50 on sell. Best color match for Factory fork.

On arrival at Heathrow, customs pulled us to one side and we're impressed with our bikes, apparently they had a street value of 4.2million!

if the dc forks arent compatibe with the build just because they are downhill the wheels also have to go. the most expensive wheels you can get are handbuilt enve rims on chris kings (or using dt 180s i9 hubs or besat components rims) will get you to around 3k removing 2000 euoros, with getting components from good shops you can also remove around 1k, other than this i think the numbers are fairly accurate even though i think you can find more expensive parts if you dig hard enough, also you can more expensive pedals like the garmin ones the connect to your computer

That was funny. Next I would like to see the cheapest bike from new parts only and none of that amazon/ebay crap. Order and build included of course.

We've done this before, haven't we? I came up with a bike for 17K USD or so. All "practical" parts, no bling except for a custom paint job. All hypothetical of course. Atherton AM 170, 5500 USD frame only

$700 Goat Saddle? I'll go for my Specialized 3D printed one for $325! I use ONLY Hope Brakes....they feel like magic and work and adjust flawlessly! I also use the wireless Sram Shifters....They always shift and adjust like NEW! $1,800 for Ti Jockey Wheels....INSANE!

It would cost more than this, because the person buying this type of bike would want a custom paint job and someone else to put it together for them, you are looking at 30K at least.

Last national level race bike I fitted out in 2012, we had a budget of $1 usd per gram of weight saved in order to hit a target weight of 20lbs. ready to race, with 2 (empty) bottles and a toolkit. How it worked was that if a given item weighed 250g, if there was one of near equal quality/utility weighing 200g, it was worth $50 more. Frame and fork were spec'd by the rider, which gave me a fit, since the 'new' SID had actually *gained* 250g.! That, and our so called 900g frame actually weighing 1050g. really set us back. An amazing wheelset, tensioned as tight as a roadie's butthole put us back in the running.😄🤣😉
