Good stuff. We got Obsidian a/k/a Bear 815 and her two cubs in the snow on May 11th. That's the day I fell in love with the A-1 and 200-600 combo. Lightning fast autofocus. 30 frames per second. Nothing else like it on planet Earth.
Gosh Steve..... You make it look so simple!! Guess practice makes perfect..., Always enjoy your videos, thanks for all the amazing shots and videos you post.
You were able to make some great images from that "mediocre" bear jam. Perhaps I missed it but I'd be very interested in your journey from using Nikon to the Sony A1.
I felt like I overslept by about four years. All of a sudden, Mark Smith, Steve Perry and yourself are switching (if not totally) to Sony . It seems for professional wildlife photographers, and especially birders, this eye-track technology will be as necessary as a fast motor drive. Your videos are always a welcome addition to my day and I look forward to your next post.
Love it!! My favorite raptor... and the subject of my favorite photo I've ever taken. Flying right at me, peeled off about 15 yds from me. Great video, as usual!
Nice shots Steve! 1/3200 does seem a bit fast to me though. We usually use 1/1000 to 1/1600 max when shooting harriers up here on the west coast. You must have had great light that day! American Kestrels, now that's another story. As noted, 1/3200 to 1/4000 for those little guys for sure. Nice to get opportunities such as in your video. We are usually in low light overcast during that time of year or rain. Love your videos. Keep up the great work! Steve Large.
Nice video. You live in such an amazing place with so many wonderful possibilities. I’m happy for you that you are using the A1 because for what you were doing, it is bar none the best out there right now. It will enable you to maximize all of your efforts, time and energy. Plus as you said ‘it just makes things tack sharp’.
Great pictures! I'm curious: I use a slight variation of Mark Smith's A9 programming on my A1 with three back-button focusing modes on different buttons (AEL, AF-ON, and the Joystick center press). AEL is for spot acquire and follow, AF-ON is for zone acquire, and the Joystick is manual focus with assist, for when a bird is sitting way back in the foliage. I'm certainly no expert, but am pretty happy with the results so far. Do you use something like what Mark does?
You live in such an amazing place! We just got home from spending a week in Jackson and the Tetons. I am overwhelmed by all the great wildlife photo opportunities we had. I joked about bringing home a great grey owl photo and I got the opportunity! I brought home a beautiful printable image of a beauty! She (or he?) flew right in front of us and landed in a tree next to a pull off on Moose Wilson Road! I was jumping out of the car before my husband had a chance to come to a complete stop! I am still on a major high from spending a few minutes with such a magnificent creature! I see why you spend so much time with them! The darn bluebirds eluded my attempts to get a printable image😆. I love your channel! I bought the sigma 100-400 after your review and it has not disappointed but I rarely use it since o was able to get the 500pf last summer. Thank you for letting me spend some “virtual” time with you in the Tetons!
I know the feeling well regards to the kestrel. In Australia I was out birding recently and saw 2 Nankeen Kestrel that I wanted to photograph, neither of which cooperated at all. I had not even got out of the vehicle when they just flew off from such perfect perches.
That at 12:00 you face with almost any birds where I live. My big van no threat, I can approach kestrels, buzzards, red kites, woodpeckers, whatever as close as 5 m, big cars, no threat, they almost even don’t take notice. Pulling over in 15 to 20 m distance, tiny photographer with camera exiting the car seems to be a mega threat, whoosh, they’re gone.
Can I ask what you are using for video? Is it the sony A1? My wife is an amateur wildlife photographer & is looking to do some video. I just sent her the link for your workshops
Another great video Steve. I am thinking of switching to Sony but do love the Nikon 500mm PF. How does the sharpness of the Sony 200-600mm compare with the Nikon 500mm PF? Thanks and keep up the good work - I was very fortunate to be able to visit GT a couple of years ago and your videos bring back great memories - hopefully I will get the chance to visit again some day.
Hey Steve! I am not the one to usually write comments online but i am a passionate wildlife watcher and similar to you i got a 400 2.8 recently :-) Although i live in france yours is pretty much the only wildlife channel outside of europe that i enjoy watching frequently. My favourite photography subject is the Hen Harrier male which is present around where i live in winter. I do love your great grey owl stuff but i was glad to see you photographing Harriers as well! I would love to see more Northern Harrier Stuff! Also would you mind telling me what Music you used for the intro of this video? Sounds like Kings of convenience to me - you should check them out if you are into that kind of music. Cheers! Mat
Super photos as always Steve, I have a feeling you will be picking up that A1 more often than you might think when You're heading out on future photography missions of any sort. Some day I would like to get one in my hands, but I have the A7R IV and that's more than enough for me for a while. Great Video 👍🏻
Ugh. For the first time, I can say that a Steve Mattheis video made me sick to my stomach. Seeing 610 and her cubs so full of life hit me hard. I love your work, by the way, so this is not your fault. I wanted to scream through the television, "STAY AWAY FROM JACKSON!" I'm an amateur photographer that gets to visit the Yellowstone region only a week or two a year, if I'm lucky, but I've photographed these bears a couple of times. Once was last year, when after driving 1600 miles one-way and entering the park via Moran Junction, I was photographing them within 15 minutes. Then, there was this May 16th, when I was awed by 610's cub and Blondie's cub play fighting. While I learned about his being collared and relocated, I was happy that he had joined with her and seemed to be doing ok. Then I got home later in the month to find that he had been euthanized on the 22nd. Such a gut punch. Anyway, like I said, I love your work. Looking forward to seeing more videos.
Great video. Love your vids. What is the weather like in mid-September"? I am planning a trip to the Tetons/YS NPs in September. Hope to see you sometime during that time.
I think there have been quite a few videos now where I’ve noticed the aperture in his featured photos didn’t drop below the minimum f5.6-6.3 of that Sony 200-600 he’s using. If he’s evaluating the A1, he’s been doing it for a few months now.
I have added Sony gear to my kit. Still also have Nikon and Fuji as well. I'll talk about it on a video sometime. Just gotta find the time to sit down and ramble about it...
The snow is beautiful! The harriers are beautiful. Your life is good with Stephanie now home! Hope the bears are there in the fall. Keep the stupid tourists in their cars when ViewIng the wildlife!
I really did think you were going to get side-tracked shooting and be late for pick-up lol. Those beepers when US car doors open can't help wildlife photographers !!
Thanks for a lovely video, also for including the data with the photos, really appreciated 👍🏼
Thanks for reminding us that perseverance pays in many ways...
Loved the footage of the grizzlies! Very cool!❤
Thanks for taken us with you 😊
Nice shots of the grizzly and northern harrier.👌

Last remark, glad the band-aid is history!
Beautiful Bird, nice shots
Another great video! I am running the same set up, and love it! Thanks for taking us along
Very nice Steve. Good quality photos.
Another fantastic adventure!!!
Nice shots of the Harrier.
Yes, It's difficult to manage it
Nice photos, and nice taste in music. 😃
Great pictures, as always. Super shots of the harrier!
Steve, stunning photographs of the harrier. I also liked the video of 610 and her cubs. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Those pictures at the end were fantastic,
Great shots...thanks for sharing
Wonderful photos Steve, seems the A1 is all things to all men ! 👏😀👍

I second that. I'd love to know your thoughts and general setup and lens selection for the Sony A1.
Still using Nikon (and Fuji) as well. I'll talk about it all at some point when I have time to sit down and ramble on.

Look forward to seeing your great videos. Beautiful Pictures as Always.😊

Great session
Great shots, Steve. That one with the pair of bears borders on unreal in how they pretty much posed for the painting, so to speak.
Love it!! My favorite raptor... and the subject of my favorite photo I've ever taken. Flying right at me, peeled off about 15 yds from me. Great video, as usual!

Two of my favourite things to photograph!! Who knew?!😀💕
Great shots!
Nice video, great photos

Kestrel's are one of my archenemies too...Every time I get out with them they buzz off...Amazing photographs of the grizzlies and harrier...as always.
My favorite part was the Meadowlark in the beginning, they are so hard to get standing still that long, great job!
Wow amazing footage :)💓 ... That bear wrestling 🙀

I'm currently using a two back-button strategy and it works just great for me.
How do you know is Grizzly 610? Thanks.

The 200-600 isn't as sharp as the 500pf (imo) but it is far more versatile of course. Different tools for different jobs.
Glad to see that you used a camera and a lens for this :)

Such a great song! Harriers are so hard to get a great shot imo. They always seem to be just out of reach
You should try and shoot over here. Everything bails at 200yards. If you stop you're car it's gone.
Have you switched to Sony now from Nikon?
Watch this...

Beautiful shots of 610, cubs and the harrier 😍 so the elephant in the room is are you switching to Sony or just testing this system out?
Yeah, I had to pause the video to identify the new camera 🤣

Thanks for another great video. Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean is also pretty incredible.
I agree
Surprising that you have never did a video on shooting moose that I could remember. Nice video.
There are several moose videos that I've made over the years.
@@SteveMattheis I searched. You have done many and I watched all of them. Sorry, I'm 60. :-)
Nice video, Like 284 and Bye from Italy :)
Just started shooting wildlife! Need a telephoto lens.. gotta be a game changer! 🔥 Dope video!
Witch month was that?
April - I mention it a couple times in the video.

The RED beanie wouldn't scare the birds?
Maybe. Probably not. Who knows? Most birds don't seem to mind but I can't ask them.
I was so nervous you'd get caught up in an opportunity and be late to get Stephanie. Phew!
Because that's something I'd do haha
What lens and camera did you use in the video?
Sony A1 and 200-600mm lens
What was that bird at the beginning ?
Meadow lark
Man soo jealous of the camera/lens combo
What focus area mode(s) do you use with the A1?
Depends on the situation of course. Wide, zone, single, tracking...
And Kestrels hate car doors shutting!
So have Nikon lost another great wildlife photographer? I still have Z6 but would not mind a Sony A1!!.
I have added Sony gear to my kit. Still also have Nikon and Fuji as well.
