SOLO CAMPING IN A STORM - BRUTAL STRONG WINDS and RAIN - Stybarrow Dodd Lake District UK Backpacking

- STORM CAMPING
I anticipated some bad weather but not to this extent! My Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2 held on well but only just as the ground wasn’t Ideal for getting stong anchor points. 70mph gusts hammered my tent for most of the night so I didn’t get much sleep. Still, it was awsome to be out and having good quality kit definitely kept me safer.
Take care out there
Al

You Sir are absolutely daft and crazy. Seeing your videos makes me want to be younger again. Watching you is a realization showing me what I've missed in life. Your love of Blue is an inspiration to all animal lovers. Stay strong young man.
I think many people feel life has passed too quickly. Still time to adventure 👌
It's criminal that this channel does not have more subscribers. We're with you, Al. Cheers from Georgia, USA.
😂 thanks John I’m trying. One day I’ll get there.
Give him and blue one year and they will have a million subscribers 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wow! Impressive video! First one of yours I've seen. Will watch many more thank you!

Met this gut at Manchester Airport he was with his son, such a lovely guy always smiling ,had a little chat on camping, top top guy
This brings back memories of when I carried mail back in the East of the US in the winter. Some days the wind would be so strong, it would be very difficult to walk into it. Add some snow or icy rain, and it felt like pins and needles hitting my face. It would be so cold and windy that my eyes would begin to freeze shut. A lot of things would be going through my mind. Like, "Why am I out here in this torturous weather, is this job worth the risk of frostbite? My exposed skin would begin to feel like plastic, as the top layer of my skin became so cold that there wasn't any sensation or touch. The weather was so terrible that barely anyone would be outside. The void of any human or animal activities made it feel like some sort of apocalyptic scene in a movie. But I pushed on. Often into evening hours as it began to get even colder. All that would be out there was me and the howling wind. With seemingly an endless load of mail yet to be delivered, I would think that if I survived today, I would be faced with yet another day, week, and months to come. Now, in retirement, I often dream that I am out delivering the mail in such extreme weather. As in dreams, it feels like there is no end to the suffering. Nearly 50 years since I became a City Letter Carrier, or mailman as the public referred to us as, I now suffer the aches and pains, my mother told me would be the result of working in extreme weather. Having a small pension and all of my children had what they needed growing up at home, was it all worth the pain and suffering? Could I have done something else? I actually don't know. It takes a special kind of person to do that job. Maybe I was that person.
Blue has just had his daily treats and says thank you
For all your good wishes and love 💙 and that he is now
Fit and well and looking forward to his next adventure with his “dad”
I listen to rain and wind and coldness at night to get to sleep, nice to share your tent with me,will sleep well tonight
😂 not so comforting this night
Mad crazy but great to watch love how you smile through it all makes u wonder how the Homeless survive in extreme weather stay safe keep smiling you're amazing 🤗🤗
I think of the homeless often. They definitely have it tough.
Stumbled across your videos a few weeks ago, really enjoy it more than the other channels. You are genuine, with no cheesey gimmicks and appreciate that. Keep doing what you do best.
Yes mate I’m definitely just honest with it all. Glad you’ve found me pal👊
As an outdoor guide and adventurer of many years it must be said THAT WAS EPIC 😀😂. I love that you were laughing through it, absolutely the right attitude. Awesome.
I think you have to laugh through life otherwise you’ll cry😂. I’m always positive and I don’t know any other way.
And never trust ny one no matter who it is
You are one of the most knowledgeable campers that I have ever seen. Absolutely Awesome!! Peace and Blessings from the state of Connecticut. ❤❤❤❤
Thanks i think it’s just all common sense although being fit is safer in the mountains 👍👍👍
Absolutely wild, thanks for enduring it for us all to witness(from our warm homes😂). It's the positivity that helps in all aspects of life. Great to see you smile throughout.
Wild mountain, wild weather and one wild man! keeping the "wild" in camping-luv it!🐏
Great epic video sir!You do what most of us dream in these storm conditions(im 65)1stay safe sir,and speedy recovery for blue
I bet Blue is stretched out in front of a roaring fire with a big marrow bone, laughing his paws off 🤣
Great scenery, love this video. Thanks mate 👍
Not a care for me😂😂😂
Enjoyed every minute of this, you’re one brave fellow and always so cheery, this was a lovely way for me to spend a sleepless night, in my cosy bed, watching you and I stopped it halfway to make myself a pot of tea 😂 Cheers from Oz
Yeah tea helps everything 😬. Thanks Polly.
Absolutely 💯 full on Alan. You and that tent have been pushed past your limits. You are definitely one of the best youtubers, when it comes down to extreme! Fantastic video 👏👏
Thanks mate 👊
I used to tent camping and my favorite was camping in the rain. I loved falling asleep to the sound of the rain on the tent. That wind would have had me in tears. So intense.
Rain yes but that was a tough night 😂😂😂
Wow, all. We sympathised watching you in that wind, having experienced not being able to walk. Actually bummed it back down to safety lol. We hope Blue is better very soon. Always excited to see your videos up. Thank you very much.
Thanks Maggi 😬👍
Al, you make the best videos. I feel like you have a camera crew along with you. Your editing, and your cinematic skills are second to none. Please make some more of these extreme camping videos . Look up a musician named Glen Campbell, he had a song about me and you and a dog named blue, that should be your theme song. Keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks mate much appreciated. I’ve heard that song😂
Wow what a night. This was really amazing to watch at how camping out can be so crazy as that. Thanks for great content.
Yes it was tough 😂
Blue knows left from right enough said ,thanks to you both
Another excellent example of how to cope in unfavourable conditions keep up the great work 👍🍺
Thanks mate.👍👍
I hope Blue is okay by now and that he is 100% recovered
Hope Blue gets well soon, please keep us posted on how he's doing 💜
He’s totally fine thank you🥰
I just love your adventures, from the warmpth of my home .... When it is windy, it makes it all the better.
Aww I really missed Blue, hope he’s made a full recovery ❤️🩹 But WOW what a fantastic video, enjoyed every minute of it 😊 Thanks for sharing.. stay safe..
I’m really enjoying watching you and blue!
Definitely a WILD camp Al. Missed Blue dog hope he gets better soon. Thanks for sharing your adventures and have a great 2023.
Well after looking at what you faced during the night I'm very pleased Blue was at home warm and safe but I did enjoy your experience and giving the viewer an insight to what you can
Expect if your unprepared
Great channel Al
👍
😂 yes I think he chose well😂
Absolutely awesome! Found your channel a few weeks ago and have now watched loads of the vids. That is some serious, serious wind, no messing about up there!! Certainly inspires me to get out! 😁
Welcome mate👊. Plenty of good adventures to catch up on👍
I love all ♥️ your videos ! Take care & stay safe & take care of Blue ,. He is a beautiful dog 💕. Bye for now
Thanks Theresa 😬
I just found ur channel and subscribed. I was sitting here praying 🙏 u were ok. Thanks for the content and sharing your experience with all of us. WTG I'm watching this January 21st 2023 so I'm glad u made it out, that's horrible wind. Be safe in ur travels. Love from Kansas 💜💙❤️
Welcome 😬.
Spring time music snd icicles really set the mood 😂
I just recently found your channel. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada and watch a lot of UK adventurers. I love your positive attitude and that you can smile after a sleepless night. I will be watching lots more trips.
Welcome😬. I always smile my way through life. 👍
Would love to wake up to that view every day.
That was exciting. I didn't know there were such open landscapes in the UK. Beautiful vistas.
There's some really nice places in Britain
Hi, Al! That Fjallraven Abisco Lite II really held up under tough conditions. Amazing video! Thanks, and take care of yourself in 2023.
It’s a tough tent👍👌
You are a wild man Alan‼️ … thank you for another thrilling adventure on the mountains of England. Wild and woolly times in freezing midwinter. Brrrr!
Always wild😂. Thanks 😬
It’s silly though it’s people like this that causes mountain rescue to come out. Making a decision to make a UA-cam video over safety very irresponsible
@@Pauladams2676 you have no idea what you speak of. Alan is an expert, especially in the Lake District. He has lived there his entire life and has been involved in rescues ad many competitions on the mountains.. pls do research before jumping to an untrue accusation. Do you enjoy attacking people you obviously do not know or understand? Does it help your sense of self importance? Try watching more of Alan’s videos, go on, you might actually learn something…
@@tracymac1111 calm down love take a chill pill 💊
@@tracymac1111 calm down love take a chill pill 💊 you sound a right phycho
FANTASTIC, as always. If i feel down, I watch your videos on repeat!
😬 that’s awesome mate I’m glad I can bring some positive energy to you. Always keep going mate as those times are always temporary 👊
Good advice at 19 mins about being prepared to bail if the worst happens. Been in that scenario and was glad I was able to deal with it quickly. Amazes me when I see people with tents and porches that look like a teenagers bedroom. If the worst happens it's best to have your kit ready to go. 👍 Poor Blue must have been heartbroken when he saw you packing then going without him. 🐾
Yes I’m always planning for worst case scenario so I can move quickly if needed. There is always a message in these videos that will be realised one day by people if they end up in a similar position 👍👍👍
BRUTAL. I envious though. Love winter camping.
Mad dogs and English men indeed. Nice one lad. 64 now so no more of those for me. But when I was much younger I loved mad weather and loved to be out in it.
What a hike. Amazed you managed to put the tent up in the first place! Great stuff!
I’ve been in worse but that was a tiring night😂
Thank you for such a genuine well made video; your audio is superb, given the ambient conditions. As a consequence of your endeavours, I'm all fired up to emulate them in sunny Scotland once the snaws away. I'm a motor biker.😊
Mate what an awesome adventure. You really push the boundaries of wildcamping. . Love wildcamping yet to do a winter one . Might wait after watching this !!😕👍
😂 yes they can be tough. Calm cold nights are easy enough with the right kit👌
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Blue and your family🎉❤love the Winter, Snow videos, can't wait for your new adventures in 2024🎉Peace, health, happiness in the New Year🎉🎉😊
I am a new subscriber and I must say you are a resilient man. Will be watching more of your wild adventures, stay safe and sending love from Perú 🇵🇪🦅🇵🇪🦅🇵🇪
Welcome😬. There are loads of good videos to catch up on😉👌
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I will try and catch up with your videos. Take care.
That was just fab, Al - You don't half suffer to entertain us..! I hope you enjoyed your fire and cuppa tea when you reached home! ☕
Have to admit I was a little worried watching this one. Don’t think I’ve seen you that exhausted even in your greatest weather videos (which I love). Glad to see you back safe. I’m sure not having Blue makes a trip like this just a bit more tedious. Hope you had a great holiday. Being home after this must have helped. Loved it!
It was a tough one with not much sleep. I can’t wait for calmer camps😂
What an opening shot/sequence!!
Sitting in my lounge room in Australia at 27 c I feel for you. In my younger days I used to hike the mountains of Tasmania so I know how you felt camping in that stormy weather. take care and stay safe. Cheers Dave
😂 after that I could do with a holiday in Australia 😂
Epic night Al, glad you made it through safely. I purchased my Abisko lite 2 on the back of your snowed in Helvellyn vid last year, after this latest outing Fjallraven will sell a few more. You are definitely worthy of a Fjallraven sponsorship deal after this one. Did you not double pole? I hope Blu is on the mend soon. 👍😉👊
😂@fjallraven have sold many tents on the back of my videos. I’ve had over 100 messages saying so. Great kit though and I’ve not seen any other brand tested to what I have😉👍👍👍
That was definitely some intense wind there for sure! That had to have been one long night man! Glad that you made it back down and out of there safely. Thanks for sharing the adventure. Cheers!
It was definitely a long night 😂. Thanks bud
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I bet it was! Didn't look like you slept a wink... yikes! 😲 You're more than welcome by the way man 👍
I absolutely love watching these videos very therapeutic I wish you and your lovely dog all the very best
From beautiful ice structures at the beginning, to gale force winds, camping near that ledge, this video is brilliant! Glad you survived, and got down OK, albeit with sleep deprivation, pretty much going on adrenaline. Just the best.
That’s it mate adrenal 😂😂😂👍
Surviving adverse weather conditions, prevailing over difficult topographical features and the mental and physical challenges associated with outdoor adventuring provides not only confidence in ones own abilities but a perspective in our everyday life that few things are insurmountable. Being in nature also bestows an appreciation of its beauty and bounty and keeps us in harmony with life itself. Thank you for sharing the vistas and experiences you face on your journeys.
I agree my friend👍. We all need to ‘feel’ more in life and get back to nature
Thats what I call a wild camp, that tent has held up to some storms now, thanks for sharing the experience absolute epic Al 💙 👍
Cheers👊. That tent has definitely been in a few battles. Most tents live on a shelf😂
Love your channel. Keep doing what you do. Sending good vibes from Arkansas USA!
Mate that was brutal but absolutely riveting to watch. The savage/beautiful side of nature is just wild. You gained a sub and like for this one. Well deserved 🙌🙏🤘
Welcome Patrick 👊. I love Mother Nature and this isn’t my hardest night either. A few other videos are really tough!
Wow great video, what a weather, unbelieveable!
Here in Holland also lots of wind at the moment.
Take care!👍👍
Had two similar camps in my life - whole night wondering if the tent would survive. Cold, damp, no sleep. And somehow it still helped my mental health, just getting out there.
👊 definitely 👌
Love the sound of rain on a tent roof keep falling .asleep hope you’re wee dog makes a speedy recovery 💚🏴☘️☘️
I do normally 😂😂😂. Cheers.
Hi Al , Happy New Year
Another great vid ,I was up there myself over the New Year to bag more peaks but she ( Mother Nature ) didn’t want me there lol .70 mph winds the rain felt like being pelted with stones , was wetter than an Otters Pocket ! Bagged a couple but didn’t want to put myself in trouble and having the mountain Rescue out .Safety first can always go back .Hope blue recovers soon because we miss him too ! Look forward to more of your adventures this year .👊👊
It’s very exposed up there for definite 👍. Cheers Jase
Another great video Al, always a pleasure coming along with you on the journey. Got my annual 4 day wild camp in Dartmoor coming up end of the month, praying for good weather.
Yes let’s hope this wet wether passes for you 👍👍👍
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Thanks Al, although woke to the news this morning saying they've now banned wild camping in Dartmoor, not as easy to get away with like in the Lakes. Typical.
@@Geordie_Hiker It'll be alright if you avoid that guys specific area I reckon. Don't see why the DPNA will actually ban it in other places. I wouldn't worry about it.
You can endura the big wind and snow, how amazing!😀
Hi Al, hope Blue feels better soon 💙 🐶
Glad you decided to come back down to set up camp ( personally, I would have gone back home) 😄 and at one point I thought you were going to take off. 😳😉
Thank you, from California.
Aww send blue our love hope he gets better soon and omg what a video that weather was insane braver than me i love my wild camping but not to this level yet thanks for another amazing video to watch never a let down or dull moment thanks again al and keep up the great work waiting on the next adventure 💪💪🧡🧡
🌺 It's cold, mid-morning and 39° here in Mississippi, USA but it's not as cold as where you're at! Got a fire going in my fireplace after watching your video, lol! God bless you and thank you for sharing your video with us, I really enjoyed our adventure together!!! 👍🌺
You can’t beat a fire😊. One of my favourite places especially after nights like this😂
Your adventures always have the greatness of man overcoming extreme difficulties. When I am tired and weak, your adventure video makes me reflect on myself and courageous. I'm always thankful for you. If I can visit your area someday, I hope to go backpacking with you once.
PS. Im very wondering your layering system of your cloths. Can you introduce me to your layering system of your clothes?
From fan in the Far East South KOREA
Thanks Lee I’m glad I can give you some motivation. 👍👍👍
Thanks lad for inviting us to come along.
Another epic video, Al. Going in conditions where most wouldn’t venture a walk and there’s you “think I’ll pitch me tent here”😂. I know it’s a 4season but I reckon Fjall Raven are probably impressed their tent took that battering!
Hope Blue recovers soon, bless him ❤🐾
I don’t know of other tents that have been tested like I’ve tested the Fjallraven. I definitely trust them. 👍👍👍
@@BUSHMANandBLUEještě lepší je Hilleberg, který je testován v těch největších extrémech v Patagónii ...😅
All that noise from the wind I wouldn’t sleep omg wicked freaking out just watching then to take the tent down in that storm. Your videos are great by the way !!!
Thanks Louise😬. I’m pretty good at sleeping even though that was a night of broken sleep😂
That is some crazy wind. Missed seeing Blue, hoping he gets better soon.
Just amazing. Fantastic to watch.i really don't know how you do it. Thanks for an amazing video
There is always someone worse off than you in life I say so just get on with it👍
hi al, new subscibers here!! we have been binging your incredible content every night since finding your channel so were buzzing to see tonights upload! props to you for a mental night out there, missing blue but hope hes doing alright now! cant wait to see what adventures you both get up to this year!! :)
😂 binge watching! Brilliant. Glad you’ve found the channel
You're in for such a treat!
What you need Al is some decent silicone ear plugs. I use them every night to prevent the wife’s snoring from keeping me awake and they definitely cut out all noise! Looks like you got no sleep overnight. Nothing worse than lying there all night and not being able to get to sleep. Means you’re knackered the next day before you even start. And it’s definitely not the same without Blue. Mind you, after watching this, I bet he’s glad he stayed at home. Good game, good game! Take it easy out there!
I had to blast the fire and central heating just watching this. Hugely challenging conditions and an amazing adventure!
Get well soon, Blue!
😂😂😂
That camp was quite the wild ride! Great video, Al. Missing your best mate, Blue!
Thats two videos now Al without the dog!! How dare you 😂. Hope he’s well and thanks for another mad, bonkers vid. 👍
😂 he will be back soon😬😬😬
Blue is in Dubai with all the advertising money going nuts with loads of bitches on a yacht
Too cold for the poochie out there!😉…..weather too bad!
Great video! Thank you. Your videos normally make stormy weather feel cosy. But this looked tough. We'll done. Your videos bring us all on an adventure. 🙏
😂 it definitely was a tough night
that was an amazing advert for that tent, it's crazy how it withstood that, it takes a very stoic person to remain calm under such conditions
The wildest Weather camping i’ve seen yet, you Showed no fear at All, you’re the bravest solo camper i’ve seen yet in the worse Weather anybody could encouter
I wasn’t in any danger but danger is only a step away
I can see on your face how much you enjoy the tough conditions during the climb up
I do enjoy the challenge and pushing my body 😬
We were with you, worried to death for you! It’s a good job your fit and have all the gear! Hope Blue Boy is feeling better. X
The right gear definitely helps👌
I cart go camping in bad weather iv got copd liver disease and just to top that of my kidneys are on the way out so its just not wise for me to do it so when I find your channel i was so happy no fancy stuff just camping you and your dog its the best
Thanks mate I’m glad you can join us on our adventures. I hope your life situation improves but get out and do what you can👍👍👍
Absolutely fantastic!
Thank you for sharing. I couldn't do what you do, in that treacherous winter. Take care my friend
It’s just good to show that it can happen and it might give people an idea of how to cope in it👍👍👍
You are my favorite person to adventure with I enjoy and learn from you Best regards🌪🌪
Thank you my friend
I’m amazed that tent survived such strong winds. It looked rather flimsy, but obviously was up to the job.
The Fjallraven tents can take a lot considering. I definitely trust them.
I would not have believed it without seeing it. WOW!
Must be one strong tent to withstand that 😮
Wow. What an adventure. Thank you for sharing it with us. I hope you're feeling better now.
Still feeling rough but I’m alive😬
Cracking video as always Al! Looking forward to the next one when you’re feeling 100% again!
I need a hot cup of coffee just watching your brave self in this epic wind blast. Did u know this storm was coming???
I knew it was going to be windy but not to that extreme. 👍
Pitching ur tent right close to that drop in those winds would have me terrified all night 😮😮. Love these videos!
Brutal wind are you crazy. ? Another awesome video mate, great content and I hope that Bluey dog gets better soon ,awesome video again mate all the best for 2023 john from Sheffield South Yorkshire England
I was in the lakes so didn’t have much choice so had to get out in it👍
Wow that was wild, respect to you.
Been watching your adventure from Tasmania , Australia 🇦🇺 🙂
Only your supreme fitness got you through that, us mere mortals would have perished, or been "gone with the wind".
So glad you recorded that and shared it with us.
😂 fitness definitely helps in most aspects of life 😉👌
Awwwe hope Blue recover fast with no hiccups.
Another terrific video mate! So therapeutic warning it from a cosy room with a fire. Hope you enjoyed yours after this exhausting one and that Blue is OK.
It makes you appreciate the calm times in life😂😂😂
