A new genre is born -Taxi FM. Love it ! I copped a copy of that Mary Jane Girls 12” a few years ago at Kingbee in Manchester and it does sound fab! Oh Eighth Wonder - I have the 7” of that and it still gets a spin now and again. Hope you got through Christmas OK mate. Happy New Year! 👍

Merry Christmas mate. My copy of The La's album was also from a charity shop, albeit about 25 years ago. I'm totally with you, a fabulous album. To think they spawned Cast! Yikes. I don't know any of those 80s pop tunes, I was shielded from that world when I was young. I'm beginning to think I was brought up in a isolationist cult, or by the Amish. The first time I heard There She Goes on terrestrial FM radio WFNX. I called the station and asked the DJ Duane Bruce who it was. He told me it was The La's and I ran out in search for the album. I still love the song to this day and the album as well. Lee Mavers had his problems like a lot of other singer songwriters. Have to agree with you on what you said about the late great Rick James. Who I saw perform live in the early eighties. He was phenomenal Harris. He reminded me of Prince in a roundabout way. Or vice versa. I am sure that Prince carried a little Rick James influence in his heart. I have never seen that Mayfield album in the wild either. I was just listening to Sweet Exorcist yesterday. Similar to my reaction to the La's 'There She Goes'. I had the same instant love for Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'. One of those songs that grabs you instantly. Kind of like Robbie Robertson's 'Somewhere Down the Crazy River'. I enjoyed seeing the tough to finds and the new grabs Harris. You truly never disappoint. Hi Rob, yes that La’s is a lot better than I remember. As someone who never liked Oasis, I always feel they are a fantastic alternative. Rick James is great, but I don’t own anything by him as an artist. I’ve heard he was phonomenal live.. TBH that Curtis album is very half baked but the track ‘Tripping Out’ is fantastic. I didn't know Lee Mavers was such a character, amazing find for that price of course. I wish I had Jellyfish records in the first place to put to one side haha, I saw an original Bellybutton in Hay on Wye and idiot me didn't buy it!! I still need to check out L.s.d in Wilton, very clever name, ill investigate that Curtis as didnt know of it. Wow!! I fucking love Matador as my fave band of all time Guided by Voices were on it in the mid 90s amongst many other bands. I have the 7" of Flourescences which I picked up in Stroud a few years ago. Taxi Driver FM has its moments, last time I was in a taxi the bloke was playing some great 00s deep house. I'd love to pick up that K&D sessions as well as the DJ Kicks record they did. Hi Dan, that Curtis album is very lukewarm, but ‘Tripping Out’ has always been a favourite. Yeah ‘World Of Echo is a great shop & the owner Natalie is lovely. You should go on their site, their mail order for new & used is great & the stock is always interesting & prices aren’t bad considering it’s fairly hard to find stuff. . I had one issue & they dealt with it brilliantly. Probably you’re kind of shop Dan I’ve got that DJ kicks on vinyl, it’s pretty decent, got a great Thievery Corporation track. Hi Ritchie. That Curtis album is a bit half baked bar the track ‘Tripping Out’ which I love. I’ve just been told by another commenter that the equivalent of Taxi FM in America is Grocery Store FM. Although I’m struggling to see how I would find enlightenment in a tune I’ve always hated while buying a cut price bag of Twinkies (are Twinkies still a thing?) it’s the only American food I can think of 😆
@@Harrispilton22 Twinkies are still a thing but they have probably been bought by a multinational enterprise. The grocery store I go to plays a lot of classic rock. It is strange buying groceries with Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin coming out of the intercom. They do play Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.
Those Stone Roses 12" singles are killer. That is one Curtis Mayfield album that I don't have. Hard to find in the States as well. 12" Wicked Game; didn't know that existed. Nice way to end the year. I hope 2024 is good to you, Harris. Cheers.
Hello Mate, that Curtis album is a bit half baked to be honest, but ‘Trippin out’ is a five star summer tune. In the U.K. 12” singles were pretty much the only way a band could get in the charts until about 91 (The U.K. charts didn’t count radio play) so they were everywhere! Wicked Game sounds incredible on one side of vinyl I imagine those Stone Roses 12” would be a tough find over your side of the pond! Cheers man! 😊

Unbelievable to admit it, but I've never owned or even heard that La's album. I used to love 'There She Goes' back in the indie clubs in the nineties, and I think part of me always thought, 'there's no way the rest of the album will be up the standard of that song'. Funnily enough, I unexpected acquired a vinyl copy of 'The Second Coming' this afternoon, without even trying. Don't think I've heard 'Tripping Out' by Curtis, I'll check that out. That’s is unbelievable! It’s got a very strong side 1,and side 2 is decent to. Great melodies & the production hasn’t aged it. ‘Trippin Out’ is great a reallsummer tune in the vein of Bill Withers ‘Lovely Day’, the album is very half baked unfortunately! Yes happy new year to you too James! 😊

Hello! Well pricing is a bit of a red herring sometimes. The stuff I’ve shown on this video are mainly 90’s pressings when CD was king, so they always command a higher value. That LA’s album I’ve shown can be bought new on a repress for about $30.00, but the nineties copy I’ve shown will normally go or $70.00-$80.00 as very few were pressed back then. . Those Stone Roses 12” singles are very collectible so would normally go for $25.00 each, but other bands 12” singles from the same era might just be $5.00. There’s so many different factors. Totally agree that the LAs ripped off early Who!, but would anyone ever listen?? 'Swallowed the contents of a glowstick', I hope that's what it was! Taxi FM just has to be a streaming channel. Absolute beginners was hyped to be a great star studded film (Eric Sykes, Mandy Rice-Davies, Lionel Blair etc) but ended up as a Bowie single and nothing else. Don't worry it'll be over soon, my mum is getting a clutch kit for Xmas, stay in and draw the curtains.

@@Harrispilton22 My Taxi FM days are mostly behind me as well. Some of my Taxi FM hits include: Elvis Presley’s Kentucky Rain, Scott Walker’s It’s Raining Today, and most anything by Lee Hazelwood. My station was founded a little earlier than yours.
I’ve never seen a vinyl copy of that La’s record. I still have my original copy on compact disc. The lead singer certainly sounds fun. Nice Stone Roses 12” singles. Trippin out is a track I’ll be looking up. Turbo shots and Taxi driver FM! 😂

I love that La's album..Lee seems the only one who was unhappy with it..he thought it was overproduced and too slick. Essential listening..Cast however, just never really cut it for me. I'm still trying to Love the Stone Roses.
Hi Rob. I remember buying the cassette of The LA’s in 1990 & being underwhelmed, now it sounds fantastic. Yeah I play The Roses to my nieces & nephews who are early teens , it would be fair to say they aren’t impressed..& they love Oasis, Radiohead, Verve etc.. I had a problem with pretty much every U.K. ‘Indie band post 1994. Cast being the worst...or even Dodgy!! Super Fury Animals & Goryki’s Zycotic Mynci being the exception. Gorkys need to reissue some of their albums, would love Barafundle on vinyl. Thanks Rob!

I think you've invented a new genre with "Taxi FM". I was only familiar with There She Goes until a few years ago, and then I found a double CD of the album (with an earlier recording that was rejected by Lee Mavers, and a bunch of alternate versions). It's a great album. I found the Live at the BBC on vinyl last year too. I think that's even better than the album. Merry Christmas Harris!

I have the first 4 Curtis albums and love 'em but some how Trippin escaped me. Another bloody one! I have a stack of Stereolab too but not that. I think pretty much anything would sound good when you're that out of your nut the glow stick option seems reasonable & TaxiFM is doing it for you 😂 Gotta say not a Chris Isaak fan but Wicked Game especially with the film clip "moves" me. Try to find someone in marketing, they tend to come up with a lot more creative ways to keep you both entertained.

Hey Craig, yeah The Roses ran out of puff eventually. I remember the anticipation for ‘One Love’ , went straight in at number 3....but it was rubbish! .they never recovered imo. Yeah Suzanne’s loss..to be honest I think it was my lack of knowledge in regards to double entry book keeping, thanks again mate for helping me push over the thousand!
I'm from Chicago and I've been aware of the La's album since it dropped. When I bought the CD in the early 90s, the woman who sold it to me said it reminded her of The Hollies - fairly accurate I think

I'd never heard of "The La's" here in the U.S.but just listened to that album on Apple Music and it really is good, and sounds to me like it could have been produced in the '60s. I listened to "There She Goes" and it had me confused until I realized it was covered by 'Sixpence None The Richer" in 1997 and that's the version I remember. Hey, I love "Boy Meets Girl" and I still have the CD I bought when it came out back then.
That La’s is great, I’d forgotten ‘Sixpence’ did a cover! I’ve just seen vinyl copies of The La’s are scarce, I’m the U.K. you can still pick it up on a repress.. I could make a fortune exporting ‘Boy Meets Girl’ 12” singles to America! 😂
Bloody hell, Oxfam's prices don't get any cheaper. They're always too knowing when it comes to pricing up their records. The La's is a winner though, and you're right, the Americans should love it. As for the Roses, given the limited catalogue (and the passing of time), that second album is still very, very good. Do you have Mayfield's 'New World Order'? It's brilliant, and cheap as chips on CD (don't think it ever made it to vinyl). I love that Boy Meets Girl one too. 😊

I bought The La's when it came out as an import (on CD, of course) and it is stellar. It was eventually released in the US and is a cult favorite now. "Timeless Melody" is my fave from the album. And "She Bangs The Drums" was the first song I loved by the Stone Roses! And Stereolab remain one of the most under-appreciated bands of the era... even though they are beloved by many! And I'm not ashamed to say I actually like Cutting Crew! I remember that the label tried to push Eighth Wonder quite a bit but they never really caught on like they were expected to.... at least not here in the States.

Hi Harris - I know in the late 90's I relished anything by Kruder & Dorfmeister , Rae & Christian & Thievery Corporation. K7 was my favourite label. Underworld soft mix of Barrell Of A Gun by Depeche Mode is ace. Don't get why Lee Mavers hated his record so much. Steve Lillywhite did a solid by them with his Production. At least Norwich are moving away from relegation zone & some good players will soon be fit. Congratulations on being continually cited as one of the top channels in the " VC ". 🍻
Hi David, I’ve got the DJ Kicks comp as well, but not quite as good. I had that Underworld mix in my hand this year.. but £13.00...bit too much for me. That Norwich game could be huge for us. The La's weren't a hit in the US outside of College rock radio and vinyl here was mostly non-existent by 90. My sister, who's not a Beatles in the slightest, had it on cassette, I've not gone back to have a listen in decades. And Suzanne's loss, Harris, she'll no doubt have regrets once Audrey in logistics arrives on the scene. Happy Holidays.

Short sharp pop songs but never sounds too retro, try ‘Timeless Melody’ or ‘I Can’t Sleep’ . If you like those you’ll like the album,

Hi Bea! Vapourware is something I’ve not turned to yet, it I think I would enjoy it. That Kruger & Dormeister is a bit of an acquired taste. The Depeche Mode mix is interesting & their mix of ‘Bug Powder Dust’ is great. Have you listened to ‘Flourences’ by Stereolab, it’s on UA-cam. Yeah Stereolab do some great singles Miss Modular, Ping Pong, Cybils Reverie, French Disko. The albums can get a bit much sometimes. I stick the singles in a play list so catchy!@@BeaSides
I remember The La's being so hyped up in the 90s (at least in France) ... I'll have to listen to the album again but I remember not being so impressed at the time. It was good but maybe not worthy of the hype that it was receiving. Then the band went bust (or so it appeared to me). Yeah, it's always sad to see such potential talent not getting realized but nothing we can do I guess The movie with Patsy Kensit is Absolute Beginners that Bowie wrote the title track but I don't think he was involved in the whole soundtrack. Unlike Labyrinth where he seemed to have been more involved in the whole process Great finds anyway. Enjoy! You are right about the la's I'm sure I had it on vinyl ho hum what was I thinking I culled it because of Cast maybe? I liked the second coming though it is very led zeppelin sounding. They were terrible at Reading 95 in memory and using a simply red guitarist is like admitting you fancy Ronaldo (I don't just in case you are worried). On that subject how bizzare BBC news Xmas eve main headline was some (hopefully) rich idiot bloke buying 25% of Manchester United....... My wife is converting me to those 12"s I actually used to buy those back in the day I think I'd have been a DJ on Taxi FM i even tried rewriting lyrics to pop songs if they had an instrumental version and recording me singing to them the evidence is sadly lost to the mists of time. The first time I heard There She Goes on terrestrial FM radio WFNX. I called the station and asked the DJ Duane Bruce who it was. He told me it was The La's and I ran out in search for the album. I still love the song to this day and the album as well. Lee Mavers had his problems like a lot of other singer songwriters. Have to agree with you on what you said about the late great Rick James. Who I saw perform live in the early eighties. He was phenomenal Harris. He reminded me of Prince in a roundabout way. Or vice versa. I am sure that Prince carried a little Rick James influence in his heart. I have never seen that Mayfield album in the wild either. I was just listening to Sweet Exorcist yesterday. Similar to my reaction to the La's 'There She Goes'. I had the same instant love for Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'. One of those songs that grabs you instantly. Kind of like Robbie Robertson's 'Somewhere Down the Crazy River'. I enjoyed seeing the tough to finds and the new grabs Harris. You truly never disappoint. Hi Rob, yes that La’s is a lot better than I remember. As someone who never liked Oasis, I always feel they are a fantastic alternative. Rick James is great, but I don’t own anything by him as an artist. I’ve heard he was phonomenal live.. TBH that Curtis album is very half baked but the track ‘Tripping Out’ is fantastic. I didn't know Lee Mavers was such a character, amazing find for that price of course. I wish I had Jellyfish records in the first place to put to one side haha, I saw an original Bellybutton in Hay on Wye and idiot me didn't buy it!! I still need to check out L.s.d in Wilton, very clever name, ill investigate that Curtis as didnt know of it. Wow!! I fucking love Matador as my fave band of all time Guided by Voices were on it in the mid 90s amongst many other bands. I have the 7" of Flourescences which I picked up in Stroud a few years ago. Taxi Driver FM has its moments, last time I was in a taxi the bloke was playing some great 00s deep house. I'd love to pick up that K&D sessions as well as the DJ Kicks record they did. Hi Dan, that Curtis album is very lukewarm, but ‘Tripping Out’ has always been a favourite. Yeah ‘World Of Echo is a great shop & the owner Natalie is lovely. You should go on their site, their mail order for new & used is great & the stock is always interesting & prices aren’t bad considering it’s fairly hard to find stuff. . I had one issue & they dealt with it brilliantly. Probably you’re kind of shop Dan I’ve got that DJ kicks on vinyl, it’s pretty decent, got a great Thievery Corporation track. Hi Ritchie. That Curtis album is a bit half baked bar the track ‘Tripping Out’ which I love. I’ve just been told by another commenter that the equivalent of Taxi FM in America is Grocery Store FM. Although I’m struggling to see how I would find enlightenment in a tune I’ve always hated while buying a cut price bag of Twinkies (are Twinkies still a thing?) it’s the only American food I can think of 😆
@@Harrispilton22 Twinkies are still a thing but they have probably been bought by a multinational enterprise. The grocery store I go to plays a lot of classic rock. It is strange buying groceries with Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin coming out of the intercom. They do play Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.

Hello Mate, that Curtis album is a bit half baked to be honest, but ‘Trippin out’ is a five star summer tune. In the U.K. 12” singles were pretty much the only way a band could get in the charts until about 91 (The U.K. charts didn’t count radio play) so they were everywhere! Wicked Game sounds incredible on one side of vinyl I imagine those Stone Roses 12” would be a tough find over your side of the pond! Cheers man! 😊

Unbelievable to admit it, but I've never owned or even heard that La's album. I used to love 'There She Goes' back in the indie clubs in the nineties, and I think part of me always thought, 'there's no way the rest of the album will be up the standard of that song'. Funnily enough, I unexpected acquired a vinyl copy of 'The Second Coming' this afternoon, without even trying. Don't think I've heard 'Tripping Out' by Curtis, I'll check that out. Hello! Well pricing is a bit of a red herring sometimes. The stuff I’ve shown on this video are mainly 90’s pressings when CD was king, so they always command a higher value. That LA’s album I’ve shown can be bought new on a repress for about $30.00, but the nineties copy I’ve shown will normally go or $70.00-$80.00 as very few were pressed back then. . Those Stone Roses 12” singles are very collectible so would normally go for $25.00 each, but other bands 12” singles from the same era might just be $5.00. There’s so many different factors. Taxi FM just has to be a streaming channel. Absolute beginners was hyped to be a great star studded film (Eric Sykes, Mandy Rice-Davies, Lionel Blair etc) but ended up as a Bowie single and nothing else.

I love that La's album..Lee seems the only one who was unhappy with it..he thought it was overproduced and too slick.
Essential listening..Cast however, just never really cut it for me.

Hi Rob. I remember buying the cassette of The LA’s in 1990 & being underwhelmed, now it sounds fantastic. Yeah I play The Roses to my nieces & nephews who are early teens , it would be fair to say they aren’t impressed..& they love Oasis, Radiohead, Verve etc.. I had a problem with pretty much every U.K. ‘Indie band post 1994. Cast being the worst...or even Dodgy!! Super Fury Animals & Goryki’s Zycotic Mynci being the exception. Gorkys need to reissue some of their albums, would love Barafundle on vinyl. Thanks Rob!

I think you've invented a new genre with "Taxi FM".
I was only familiar with There She Goes until a few years ago, and then I found a double CD of the album (with an earlier recording that was rejected by Lee Mavers, and a bunch of alternate versions). It's a great album. I found the Live at the BBC on vinyl last year too. I think that's even better than the album.

Only taken me 2 weeks to get to this Harris. People in the cold north are pumping out the videos at the moment!! The La's...what an album. It's soo much more than "There She Goes". Lee Mavers...what a maniac! Put your Jellyfish records in the bin I say. Glorious Stone Roses 12"s. Another perfect debut album. I have the first 4 Curtis albums and love 'em but some how Trippin escaped me. Another bloody one! I have a stack of Stereolab too but not that. I think pretty much anything would sound good when you're that out of your nut the glow stick option seems reasonable & TaxiFM is doing it for you 😂 Gotta say not a Chris Isaak fan but Wicked Game especially with the film clip "moves" me. Everything sounds better when you in a fragile state of mind. To bad about the girl in accounting. Try to find someone in marketing, they tend to come up with a lot more creative ways to keep you both entertained.

Love those Stone Roses 12s. Such is the beauty of record collecting that you get that big artwork. 🤩Agreed on "Mersey Paradise". I was always partial to "Going Down" as well. They were minting classics at a clip in that early period.

Hey Craig, yeah The Roses ran out of puff eventually. I remember the anticipation for ‘One Love’ , went straight in at number 3....but it was rubbish! .they never recovered imo. Yeah Suzanne’s loss..to be honest I think it was my lack of knowledge in regards to double entry book keeping, thanks again mate for helping me push over the thousand!
I'm from Chicago and I've been aware of the La's album since it dropped. When I bought the CD in the early 90s, the woman who sold it to me said it reminded her of The Hollies - fairly accurate I think

I'd never heard of "The La's" here in the U.S.but just listened to that album on Apple Music and it really is good, and sounds to me like it could have been produced in the '60s. I listened to "There She Goes" and it had me confused until I realized it was covered by 'Sixpence None The Richer" in 1997 and that's the version I remember.

Bloody hell, Oxfam's prices don't get any cheaper. They're always too knowing when it comes to pricing up their records. The La's is a winner though, and you're right, the Americans should love it. As for the Roses, given the limited catalogue (and the passing of time), that second album is still very, very good. Do you have Mayfield's 'New World Order'? It's brilliant, and cheap as chips on CD (don't think it ever made it to vinyl). I love that Boy Meets Girl one too. 😊

I bought The La's when it came out as an import (on CD, of course) and it is stellar. It was eventually released in the US and is a cult favorite now. "Timeless Melody" is my fave from the album. And "She Bangs The Drums" was the first song I loved by the Stone Roses! And Stereolab remain one of the most under-appreciated bands of the era... even though they are beloved by many! And I'm not ashamed to say I actually like Cutting Crew! I remember that the label tried to push Eighth Wonder quite a bit but they never really caught on like they were expected to.... at least not here in the States.
Hi Stephen, yeah Timeless Melody has a real Who intro. It feels like an album the American wing of the VC would love, Maybye Mavers overtly scouse singing tones are off putting to some? Mersey Paradise is just a euphoric delight, unlike The Smiths the Roses just ran out of steam, didn’t quite have the genius of Moz & Marr I had you down as a Boy Meets Girl man! 😂’That Flourences Ep by Stereolab is absolutely magical. It all just knitted together. I do love Dots & Loops too, but I often find the albums hit & miss. Thanks Stephen, have a great new year & 2024. 😊
Hi Harris - I know in the late 90's I relished anything by Kruder & Dorfmeister , Rae & Christian & Thievery Corporation. K7 was my favourite label. Underworld soft mix of Barrell Of A Gun by Depeche Mode is ace. Don't get why Lee Mavers hated his record so much. Steve Lillywhite did a solid by them with his Production. At least Norwich are moving away from relegation zone & some good players will soon be fit. Congratulations on being continually cited as one of the top channels in the " VC ". 🍻
Hi David, I’ve got the DJ Kicks comp as well, but not quite as good. I had that Underworld mix in my hand this year.. but £13.00...bit too much for me. That Norwich game could be huge for us. It’s wierd, we are not playing very well...but keep getting the points, & our 10 million pound striker has now been officially written off for the year, great bit of business that, classic Saints! 😂 I’m hit & miss with trip hop, but Thievery Corperation were great as were Nightmares On Wax..thanks as ever Davis, always appreciate it! 😊

The La's weren't a hit in the US outside of College rock radio and vinyl here was mostly non-existent by 90. My sister, who's not a Beatles in the slightest, had it on cassette, I've not gone back to have a listen in decades. And Suzanne's loss, Harris, she'll no doubt have regrets once Audrey in logistics arrives on the scene. Happy Holidays.

Hi Bea! Vapourware is something I’ve not turned to yet, it I think I would enjoy it. That Kruger & Dormeister is a bit of an acquired taste. The Depeche Mode mix is interesting & their mix of ‘Bug Powder Dust’ is great. Have you listened to ‘Flourences’ by Stereolab, it’s on UA-cam. It will put you in the mood to go on cycle with Dave sitting on the handlebars as you breeze past In & Out Burger. 😆 @@BeaSides

Yeah Stereolab do some great singles Miss Modular, Ping Pong, Cybils Reverie, French Disko. The albums can get a bit much sometimes. I stick the singles in a play list so catchy!@@BeaSides
I remember The La's being so hyped up in the 90s (at least in France) ... I'll have to listen to the album again but I remember not being so impressed at the time. It was good but maybe not worthy of the hype that it was receiving. Then the band went bust (or so it appeared to me).

The movie with Patsy Kensit is Absolute Beginners that Bowie wrote the title track but I don't think he was involved in the whole soundtrack. Unlike Labyrinth where he seemed to have been more involved in the whole process

I liked the second coming though it is very led zeppelin sounding. They were terrible at Reading 95 in memory and using a simply red guitarist is like admitting you fancy Ronaldo (I don't just in case you are worried). On that subject how bizzare BBC news Xmas eve main headline was some (hopefully) rich idiot bloke buying 25% of Manchester United.......
My wife is converting me to those 12"s I actually used to buy those back in the day I think I'd have been a DJ on Taxi FM i even tried rewriting lyrics to pop songs if they had an instrumental version and recording me singing to them the evidence is sadly lost to the mists of time.

Like many white socking soul boyos it all went tepid after the mid 70's, some blame the record companies for saying we need disco, or not quite disco, so drop the funk. Lovely Day is almost tolerable, I don't own any Withers but admired his Whistle Test performance with a drummer who had been on the skunk for what looked like a few years. Paul Morley, shades of, you did use one of those impressive words in the latest video, I'm probably one of the few people aware you have a PhD in English Literature and just act like the village who has lost a member for more subscribers!

Yes, you should shift gears with your videos, your embracing of low brow lobotomised soundscapes for the amusia masses circa 1988-1988 in the English speaking world could become dated. Perhaps get a gopro, put on the shiny tracksuit then wander round the UK or Russia asking people at bus stops if the timetable becomes an imaginal erotic object or sublime poetry when the bus arrives on time, or somesuch!
