Cheers! I was definitely in the right place at the right time. It doesn’t happen very often so I’m gonna enjoy this one.

Love the Ruth Copeland, her 2nd is essential as well. Her composition The Silent Boatman was on the first Parliament lp of course. She was born in my part of the world, Consett, County Durham. Incredible that she ended up in Detroit working with Clinton. Ernie Hines lp has the killer Our Generation track sampled by Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Straighten It Out...classic early 90s hip hop. Had a few copies of the Liza Minnelli over the years and passed them to friends. Similar ilk, keep an eye out for Barbara Streisand doing another Bill tune, Grandma's Hands on her Butterfly lp.

Hi Nigel. Thanks for commenting! I didn’t know that the Ernie Hinds tune was sampled by Pete Rock. Will check that out. Always nice to have a recommendation. Cheers! John

What a great haul. That’s a few more albums and artists I’ll be checking out online. Yeah most of the stuff I really want is in the States and I’m not paying the postage. So I keep my fingers crossed - you never know what turns up. That Lisa Minnelli version of Use Me was surprisingly good! Cheers John. 👍

Glad you like the Liza Minnelli tune, Andy. Always nice to find cool tunes in unlikely places. 👍👍

Still the best intro on the planet. Let me just say right off. If you want me to send you any or all of the US pressings so you will not have to pay crazy shipping prices I will be happy to do it for you. >< I always wondered if any of the Funkadelic band members played on any other albums. I now see that they did. Never heard of Ruth Copeland. But I am sure that it has some good standout tracks. I got to check out Greg Perry to see if I can hear the Mayfield influences. Being a huge Curtis fan I should be able to hear it instantly. Faze-O sounds cool. You can clearly tell that the album was released in the seventies by the back cover shot. >< Larry Willis sounds really good. >< Quick question John. Now I was not listening to soul/funk terrestrial radio stations back in the day. So I am not the best person to be asking this question. But where do you find out about some of these lesser known artists from the seventies? You really find some hidden gems~

Hey Rob. That’s really kind. You are a gentleman!
I think we’ve spoke about this before but most of the more obscure stuff that I show I will have learned about through compilation albums. Comps have been so important to me in discovering new music. I’ve then just had to be patient and wait for those records to turn up. Have a good weekend. Cheers. John

Leave it to you to find a funky Liza Minnelli album ;-) haven't seen anybody else show the Greg Perry, for some reason I've thrifted a couple of copies of it, one even still sealed. He had some involvement in the second Flaming Ember album I showed not too long ago which made for a nice connection. That Faze-O was another charity shop score, maybe my last major haul from several years back now which was all funk and soul and included Mothership Connection, first and only time I'd seen Parliament or Funkadelic in a thrift shop! Got to get into some Ruth Copeland, haven't seen that one before, her second album gets more notice - neither likely to turn up here any time soon. Great to just walk in and find those in a brick and mortar for a good price, kid in a candy shop I'm sure. Think I might have Nightchaser about. That L.A. Night song is on one of the Pacific Breeze comps from Light In The Attic, I really like that 80's Japanese city pop sound which draws from American jazz, funk and soul but outside of those comps I haven't a clue what to look for to dig further into the genre. Cheers!

Faze-o, Greg Perry and Mothership Connection from a thrift shop. That’s some good going!
I didn’t realise that L.A. Nights was on the LITA City Pop comp. I do like that Japanese City Pop sound, especially when it has that soulful feel to it. Might pick up those comps on CD. LITA attic always do a good job, but the vinyl is always really expensive over here.
Keep an eye out for the Liza Minnelli album. It’s worth it for that one track. Cheers! John

Love your way of commenting, love your taste (immensly helpful because I'm not that much of an expert in soul) and finally I love the needle drop segments (I think the way you're dropping them, i.e. stopping the flow of the commentary and inserting small samples is very nice, I might have to copy this style when/if I start my own channel ). Thank you mate :)
EDIT: Oh my that Larry Willis sounds amazing!!!

I liked the Ruth Copeland tune. Good stuff.
    Gravy? What's that about?
You have similar problems I have with US only releases. I find most of the country rock stuff I'm after had European releases, but it's all over the map. One album you might find shed loads of copies in the Netherlands, another in Italy, or Denmark, or Greece. It seems that bands became popular in only one European country.
Do you find funk and soul released in Europe?

    • @6inchpianist
      @6inchpianist  2 роки тому

Soul music is definitely similar to country in that there’s a lot of stuff that was only pressed in the US. It frustrates the hell out of me when records are easily available in the States unless you’re happy to pay obscene postage and import costs. There’s quite a lot of those 70’s soul and funk records in Sweden, as a lot of deletion copies were used on ships as ballast around that time. Crazy, huh?

Right place right time John. Based on the covers, it's unlikely I'd have even paused on many of those records. I have a reissue of Rashida album by Jon Lucien which is very nice. Wasn't Ruth Copeland from the North East originally, I seem to remember from a magazine article? Liked the Faze-o track, then realise I have that on Tom Middleton Trip CD, although it's heavily sequenced. Also LA Night is great and I have that on a Pacific Breeze comp. Glad you chalked a few off the want list...enjoy the long weekend

Hi Dale. Yes, I was definitely in the right place at the right time. I’m sure the collection has been well picked over by now but I’m in town next Thursday so no doubt will take another look. You’re right about Ruth Copeland being from the North East but I always assumed she was American. I love that early Funkadelic sound so the album was worth picking up for those couple of tracks. I have that Tom Middleton Trip CD too. That’s probably where I first heard Ridin’ High. Actually, that series of compilations were excellent. The Jarvis Cocker one was my favourite. You can’t beat a good comp! Cheers. John

Hey John, that Larry Willis is “Sick” now it’s on my discogs list. Not as easy to find as you think, only copies on eBay are from England. Cheers

Hey! I always assume that the soul and funk records that I’m after are in every record store in the US, as none of them seem to be easily available over here! Clearly, the Larry Willis album is the exception. Cheers! John

Wow... that's all absolute fire you've managed to get... the best things come to those who wait. Here in London all those records tend to be wildly over priced when they do show up in the shops. I'm very impressed with your restraint on discogs, but it just goes to show that the good stuff is out there. Cheers!... ps I know epmd had a go at the riding high sample

Hi Laurence. Right, EPMD. I remember it now that you’ve said it but I wouldn’t have got it without a phone a friend.
You’d have loved going through that collection. I even pulled out an original Rhythm Of Life by James Mason in Excellent condition. The guy in the shop didn’t know what it was but was very happy when he looked it up on Discogs. It was well out of my price range, unfortunately. I’ll have to head back there next week to see what’s left. Hopefully there’ll be a couple more bargains. Have a good weekend. Cheers. John

How come you pick up "Ridin' High" and all I ever see is "South Pacific" soundtrack ? Admittedly I did see a Bachelors album the other day which was a nice change.
Coincidentally a mate of mine dropped off a load of 45s on Sunday he'd picked up over the years at boot fairs etc. Took 3 days to sort sellable condition copies.
But anyway in it was Gerry & Paul on FAT BACK which is a very early incarnation of Fatback Band. Gerry Thomas is the link. And a 7" of Larry Willis. A jazzy fuky version of "Hard to Handle"

Hi Rod. Nice car boot 45’s! I’ll check out that Larry Willis version of Hard To Handle. Sounds right up my street. Cheers! John
