    I've watched a few videos like this and this has to be the best one yet. The most informative and understanding one so far. I do wish you would have had more close-ups LOL but definitely a great video thank you for your time. On my Abu there is another knob on the opposite side from the crank handle. Yours does not have that knob and I'm not sure how are what it does. Other than that I give you a video a AAA Plus LOL thank you

      Thanks for watching! It's a low budget operation, with a "well-positioned" GoPro and a free "low-frills" editing software. Regarding the second knob, it's essentially just another tension control for the spool.

      Today I bought an Abu Garcia 5000 C Red, never used, manufactured on 10/30/1999, according to User's Card, serial number 762667, has brand new original box, manual and warranty is in Japanese language, due to the seller having made the purchase in Japan. Would it be better to have it opened for general lubrication? or it is a copy for collectors and I must keep it as it is?

You're sitting on a fat payday, or a golden nest egg for sure dude. Seen plenty of them going for about $500 to $1000 on ebay, with a few ones with damage or non original parts in the $200 ±75 range.

    Another great video! A couple questions please; What grease and oil do you use? When you put the tall gear assembly onto the right side plate, after the cap you put on a spring washer that faces up, then about three more washers, then a black spacer….were the three washers above the tension washer the drag washers?

    • @TSGReelService

      Thanks! Penn grease, ReelX oil. The three washers were above the drag washer pressure plate.

    I’ve been using these reels for years and love them. Occasionally, they start to scream when cast. I take them apart and service them completely and it solves the issue. What part causes the screaming? I know it’s probably one of the gears being gummed up or dry but don’t know which one since I clean and grease all of them when it happens

    Jeez loved this bid. Just inherited an old 5000. From grandpa to older brother to me now. I know it needs a complete tear down like this. It has dust so thick and hardened it was terrible. I sprayed it down with some oil and got most it off. Cleaned up pretty well. I've got to watch your video a few more times before I committee to a tear down but im much more confident now. Im not familiar with bait casters other then some big Penn's I've used for sturgeon. Do you have any bids about this reel on the settings and how to tune them? I get the star drag. But the spool tension. Must be an anti back lash feature. lol. I think mine is different. Mine has a little dial on the badge side of the reel number ed 1-9 ? I assume that's reel spin? 740603 is stamped on the underside of the foot. Does that mean its was made in 1974? Thanks

    • @TSGReelService
      @TSGReelService  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! These reels can last many lifetimes, so you got a good one. Yes, those serial numbers were clues to the years of production. I don't have any videos on tuning the reel after re-assembling, but it's pretty straightforward..... yes, your goal is to get as much spool rotation in free spool without getting any backlashes. 🙂 More vids to come ... spread the word about the channel!

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY 2 роки тому

      I was looking around for manuals on these with no luck but found one for their latest model, for the spool tension you basically press the thumb button down and adjust the tension light enough to allow whatever lure you're using to drop freely and land without the spool continuing to spin and cause backlash. After a while you'll get a feel for what number you can set it to based off the weight/bait combo you're using. I'm sure an old manual may specify it better than my guess though, as it may vary based on number of turns after the nut is seated.

  • @100GTAGUY

    Anyone know how to date these based off the serial numbers on the bottom of the mount? I want to try and find some information about it's age and or also some technical/maintenance information that's model specific. Not sure how much they may have been altered during their years of production, but mine has a few different features and design characteristics like having two separate spool nuts and a toggling drag indicator.
    I'll have to watch this video a few more times though before tackling a deep clean, granted I may have to figure out a few things on my own.

    I think a safer way to remove that C lock under the handle, is to use the finger nail on your index finger on one point of the C to hold it in place and keep it from spinning and use a tiny flat head screw driver on the other side and push it back into your thumb, then once you feel it back out you can grab it with the screw driver head in the bend on the C against your thumb and it wont fly off into a black hole.....never to be seen again.
