    Another great tutorial, Dennis! Abu also made a red 5000B during the same time frame. They're similar to this one in the video, except they also have a bait clicker. l have a couple of those and they are excellent light to medium catfishing or freshwater striper setups or carp reels.

    Thanks for doing this one. Mine was my first ambassador and it doesn't work properly after I serviced it earlier this year. I had the schematic but I think I put something in backwards. I just put it aside out of frustration so now I'm getting it back out to work on again. You are a great teacher. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Dennis excellent video. I've been hoping you would make a video of the older Abu 5000. I've been servicing that style for a long time. I have several that I use on a regular basis. They are built like a tank. I got my first one when I was 13 and I still use it 44 years later. You can't get that quality nowadays. Thanks for the video.

    Hello and thanks for the video I just took apart and cleaned my granddads old abu 5000s. I think he would be proud. I am missing the two screws on the right face and one of the compression washers and handle screw. Any where on the internet where I might be able to pick up these last few parts. Based on the serial number and what I know these reels are all from 1970- 1973ish. Again thank you sir this really made my day!

    I made centrifugal brakes from a WD40 straw for my Abu 5000d, I did have to bore out the holes a little by hand with a little drill bit so they would slide freely, but they work perfectly and you can also use a plastic handle Q-Tip and you dont have to bore out the hole, but it is a thinner material....just a fyi for anyone out there that needs it.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Рік тому

      Yes - the one with the screw on the end is the older version of the reel. The process is similar. I'll bet your reel just needs a good cleaning. You can remove the cover and see if it is dirty or dried with grease. The rest is just a matter of removing the old and refreshing it with new oil.

    That seems like fun. I genuinely love taking apart and put back together reels.
    Are the silver 5000s with the round side plates normally noisy when reeling? I have 2 that are significantly noisier than my old red. Doesn't seem to cause any performance issues but wondering if I put it back together wrong.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      Without hearing the noise, it is tough to say. It is probably worn bearings or dry parts / old grease. If you have used the reels a lot, then it can be plain gear wear. - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      That is usually due to dried grease or a broken part. My guess is dried grease. Take the side plate off of the reel and remove the handle and cover. Spray the free spool release assembly and everything below the main gear with a penetrating oil. That should free it up - Dennis

    I bought a nice cosmetically good looking old ambassador 5000 on ebay I oiled it up with out taking it apart with some penetrating and lubricating oil Gibbs and WD 40 oil and it works but their must be a part missing because the star drag hits adjustment for the clutch adjustment. Such a shame I know some bushing or washer must be missing on the inside. the star drag should clear the clutch adjustment I cannot get the drag to adjust enough to work good either. This is very disappointing.
    I also bought a Daiwa millionaire for cheap on ebay too all I did to it was the same just shoot penetrant oil in the release crack and didn't take it apart it works flawless. both these reels are looking nice but the 5000 must be missing a spacer I don't know? I may have to send it to you I don't want to mess this up by taking it apart. Something happened to me and my forefinger is numb for a year now. I cannot hold on to small parts anymore and I used to be pretty decent on working on stuff but not now.
    I am tempted to put a washer on it behind the star drag but it might end up destroying the reel?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 роки тому

      Sounds like you are missing one or more of the shim washers. You can go ahead and add washers as long as the fit inside the collar. - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for your reply there is another one I can get pretty cheap but it looks like the clutch is too close to the star drag too? I think Im going to have to take it apart and have a look. Thanks for this video. Seems like if I had a pretty thin brass washer that would fit in side like you said it would work. Its kinda sandy thoughh I might loosen the two slot heads a small amount to crack it open just enough I can spay it out with wd 4o to try to wash some of the sand out of it. I sure dont want it to come all the way apart. LOL

      @@2ndChanceTackle I took it apart a few time finally figured out the base drag washer is pretty flat looking and the inside top drag washer on top is gone that would explain why the drag adjustment tightens down too far hitting the clutch adjuster.
