This was super helpful! I am a french horn player who got a Yamaha student model trumpet at a yard sale. I was able to get it all oiled and cleaned right and have been playing it getting used to the differences with french horn. I didn't know how to hold it, I just knew my left hand was hurting. THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM! :-D THANK YOU PROFESSOR!
Where are all the other episodes?????? Before a few months I watched all 1 through 35 and now there is just a few random episodes, where are they????????
I Googled how to hold a trumpet, believe it or not, for a ballet concert. We're doing a song called "Strike Up The Band" by Ella Fitzgerald. My teacher bought a set of toy plastic trumpets for us to use (no rings or hooks for the fingers and the "valves" are central). As the only musician in the class I want to do it properly. I play clarinet where the right thumb supports the entire weight of the instrument and the left hand is on top, so that's how I instinctively picked up the trumpet. It feels natural to me and I'm sure I've seen trumpeters play like that. Seems odd to hold it with my left and play with my right, but if that's how it's done then that's how it's done. At least I can report back to the class next week on how to hold it.

Good comon sense explanation.
I use my pinky in the ring because i dont have a screw/lock for my ring and using my pinky is the most comfortable.
