Yes, I hear the difference. I'm a piano and guitar player who hasn't played brass since middle school. I'm trying to pick it back up and your videos are a huge help. Thank you very much sir!
@@TheBlackTrumpeter I actually played low brass (euphonium) in 6th grade. I'm 22 now and I bought a cheap trumpet about 2 months ago and started trying to learn. I love brass but I also wanted a way to learn to read music that's a little easier than trying to jump right in to piano sheet music. I figure if I only have to deal with treble clef and one note at a time that should help me understand music notation better ha ha. I find that learning more instruments helps you reach a higher level of understanding of music generally.
Haven't played since elementary- The Jazz band at my high-school has been asking me to participate. I remember the fingerings, but my tone was off for some reason, this really helped. It did bring back major flashbacks of my instructor accosting me for not keeping my posture straight while playing though! She was a tough one!
The best trumpet teacher I ever had gave me a tip for relaxing my throat. This happens often when trying to play high notes. Any time during practice when you feel your throat tensing up, stop & swallow & hum.
I played trumpet from the 5th grade, through high school. I’m now 31 and picking it back up for the first time since high school. I learned more about controlling tone in 5 minutes and 39 seconds than I did in years of practice when I was younger. Subscribed.
Oh my god. To this day, i’ve been playing trumpet for years and endurance has been so hard for me, a major weakness - never in my life has someone told me i didn’t have to tense my inner lips! Absolute Legend! Thanks for Australia ❤️
Beautiful explanation. No bullshits to make it longer. No unneccessary talk that doesn’t provide clarity to your explanations but only make them sound cool. Thank you for putting videos by giving value to your viewers.
Have stopped playing my trumpet for a year and I regret it (been playing it for more than 3 years). So am getting into mariachi because I can’t do marching band due to my scoliosis brace. I have come to this channel before and now I’m coming back to it again. Keep up the great work! 👍🏼
I just started the trumpet last year in 5h grade. I love the trumpet, and one day I hope to be a professional. Although I feel as though I am not good enough, this video has helped me a lot I can feel the improvement! THANKYOU SMSMSM!!!
Thank you so much, I had a break for a while due to overuse, and now it's better than ever much more relaxed and clean. I can even play higher than before
You are incredible!!! I love watching your videos they help me to improve my playing very fast. I started to learn trumpet one month ago and my teacher putted me already on the level 2. I work very hard and I adore my trumpet. Thanks a lot ❤ Helene from Australia
Helped my tone go from literal beginner to near professional in like 2 minutes thanks so much, only my first year playing in high school, and these videos help so much
Thank you so much! I noticed I had a fuller sound when I used your first tip. I think I still need to play a lot of long tones though in order to improve my tone, but these tips will have me practicing them correctly. I'm mainly a saxophone player so changing partials is the most difficult thing for me to get used to.
Thank you! You did a great job describing concepts which are difficult to capture. I'm a comeback player after 18 years off. I was previously a high mouthpiece pressure player and I overblew, so the air backed up into my neck. I am gradually relearning the instrument with a focus on connecting all registers of the horn and maintaining relaxation and good tone throughout my whole range. I was nodding along when you described all the different sounds related to tension and closed airway. Thanks for the video, keep it up!
Thank you, this is so helpful. I’ve been playing for ages and always tried to figure out what the problem was when it came to a “fuzzy” sound now much better!
I play trumpet in high school and it's the middle of summer break and I realized that I hadn't picked my trumpet up for about a month and a half. I tried playing, and sound came out, but it sounded pretty flat, and I think it's just because it's the first time in a little bit, but this video has definitely sped up the process of me getting back in tune and sounding as I did before. Last year I made the mistake of not picking it up all summer break and it took me about three days of normal band and marching practice before I was back to normal, and it took awhile even after that to build back up endurance. This time, it's taken me about 10 minutes, so thank you very much! I've got a month to go before school, and I want to become a better trumpet player so I can make All State this year, so wish me luck!
Bingo! Aaron, you gave me the solution to a nagging problem I’ve had with “ weird sounds/artifacts “ in my sound/tone. Too much tension in the center of my embouchure. One day it’s there, the next day, it’s not. Couldn’t figure it out... until now. Was already a subscriber, so just wanted to say thank you🎶🎺
All your tips about posture and positioning of the mouth are similar to singing tips. And all the tips about being relaxed and avoid tension everywhere are common to every other instrument. The more I learn about music, the more I feel that it's all about being relaxed. Great video man, it helped me a lot !
i wish that i could have watched this video earlier!! As a trumpeter for 6 years… i just got to know that i’ve make so many mistakes… my teacher pointed some of them out but i didn’t really understand what did he mean… now i finally understand!! THANKS A LOT!!!
Aaron, May God Bless you for your knowledge of the trumpet. I’m picking up, after almost 40 years and your knowledge is just beautiful Man…Thank You, Robert D. Ramirez
Dude, I cannot thank you enough. After trying these fixes my tone is better and I can even hit higher notes easily. The only thing now is to get muscle memory and strengthen my lips, other than that THANK YOUUU
Great video! I’m hoping to pick the trumpet back up after not playing for years. I’ve forgotten a lot of the techniques that you mentioned and also learned some new stuff. Thank you :)
If you're struggling with your sound, the second tips help! Genuinely I felt so horrible in class because of how my trumpet sounded but its suddenly all good now? very confused. Thank you
Even when being plenty fluent in playing the trumpet, just making these mistakes can be a game killer. This is a really good video and these are really good tips as well.
Hi Aaron, what a timely video. I just sat my AMEB Grade 1 trumpet exam and got the results today. I received a B+ mark (Yay for me!) and the comments included that I needed to work on my tone and that my playing was sharp during one of my pieces. I’m the grade 3 teacher at my school here in Perth, Western Australia, and I teach music to the other classes in our school on Tuesdays. I took up trumpet because I thought it would be good to have an additional instrument. Your videos are very clear, to the point, and instructional. Thank you, Aaron.
B+?! That’s excellent! Good work👍🏾😄 I remember doing all of those instrument exams during my undergrad. French was hard for me and I play a brass instrument. 😂😅The partials are so close together!!! What’s your main instrument?
The Black Trumpeter Thank you! Main instrument? Well, 30 years ago it was jazz guitar. Nowadays it’s a little ukulele with the children in the morning. I think I can honestly say that trumpet is now my main instrument. :-)
I like how playing trumpet is in many ways like singing, as in similar principles apply. Maybe that's the reason why it feels sooo good playing trumpet
Congrats on getting back to the horn man! Glad I could help. Here’s a warm up routine to start with to ease you back into it: ua-cam.com/video/H_kKKTM0pSE/v-deo.html
Haven't played trumpet in 5 years and I was struggling to teach myself and find good videos to help teach me. This is the first video that helped me get back on track, thanks so so much 😤😤😤💯💯
I am switching from orchestra to band next year and I'm thinking about playing trumpet, and you have given me a lot of encouragement! Thank you for making your videos!
My god ur a lifesaver. I was forced to quit band in 8th grade and I lost my skills. Now since I'm a freshman in high school, I still got it thanks to you. :D
Great advice! Thank you! On the slouching or standing too tall quiz, I’m watching my tuner, which makes me adjust to playing in the correct pitch. Typically I’m way sharp when super tense before a practice or concert, so I’d say standing to tall makes you go sharp, and slouching makes you go flat.
Thank you for the tips! I haven’t played trumpet in a while so I gotten terrible at it. I am starting band again in school and I don’t want to fall too far behind.
I've recently started to play trumpet and I have to say your channel is a wealth of information and your teaching style is second to none..very grateful for your time . My go to man👍👍
This is a very helpful. Video in helping improving tone . im trying to improve my tone for the college level . The most important that i like that you mention is ylur posture the way you are sitting or standing makes a whole difference on your instrument .
Thanks for these awesome tips, they also translate quiet well to saxophone and singing. It's interesting how a feeling and state of tension also leads to a very tensed trumpet sound.
Hey Teacher my start is always in middle C register, transitioning to low C is a challenging and low,low C forget it. Still learning and thanks for the instructions.

Homegirl used to threaten to thumbtacks on the backs of my chair if I keep slouching. She came real close a couple of times but I caught myself!
😂😂😂 good posture makes life on the trumpet so much easier

Nice I've been playing since 6th grade and I'm 37 now. I play time to time but I want to be better.
Nice im still playing it
And searching up tutorials
Cause im not that good
Same! Played in 6,7,8th grade, then took a 32 year break. I wish I would've stuck with it this whole entire time but it's never too late!!,
This guy is amazing!! I learned so much from this video and it completely changed my trumpet experience!
This is my third year in trumpet and what you’re saying really true

this is like the most frequently given tip if you search on "how to get open sound trumpet)
Watching this one with my class! Hopefully they will be convinced after they hear somebody else telling them these things!
Dude, ur a life saver! I was having thoughts about quitting cuz I couldn’t get my sound right but it now sounds much better! Props to u my man.
Well I just discovered that I've been playing all wrong for quite a bit.
Don't worry or beat yourself up about it. Awareness is everything!
Same! Instant improvement 1:21
I switched from french horn to trumpet 3 months ago and i am doing my grade 3 pieces. This helps. Thanks and keep on doing more of these videos.
Good choice.
