Seven months later, I think the current state of his channel is honestly really telling. I'm pretty sure for the past year or so, Paul has been going through a sort of crisis. Maybe a mid-life crisis, or something. He has pretty much completely quit making ASMR content and has shifted towards doing "relaxing outdoor videos" that his viewerbase just doesn't click with. He does seem to be doing a lot better, and has actually voiced his rather strong distaste for making ASMR content as a whole a little over a month ago. He's seemingly completely abandoned the Rift Universe for content that he can make in a "less controlling environment". He said in a vlog of his that he quit making his traditional ASMR videos because of how much of a controlled environment you have to be in when filming, and how he often felt he had little "control" over how his videos were created. I don't mean to psychoanalyze the dude or anything, but I genuinely think that he had a mental breakdown last year and has now decided to pin the root cause of it on creating ASMR content, because of how much of a controlled environment you have to film the video in. He's still one of my favorite ASMRtists out there and I really hope he'll go back to making his Rift Universe videos soon. So do many others, I feel.
Just looking through everything, i agree. Hadn't realized he had switched up his content, personally i hope he just keeps going with whatever is helping his mental state
Honestly, I would rather he make his "outdoor videos" if it makes him happy, than continue to film regular ASMR content when he clearly has no passion for it anymore. Kanye West, for example, still releases music, but there's been a sharp drop off in quality compared to his previous albums since 2016. He's even admitted in interviews that he doesn't take it seriously anymore and pretty much just does it solely for the money now...and it shows; (not to mention, the antisemitism controversy has permanently tainted his discography for a lot of people). I fear ER would be flirting with a similar downward spiral, making content that he not only doesn't care about anymore, but actively dislikes. If you ask me though, I think he would be better off taking a break from UA-cam altogether. Just based on some of the replies I've read from him on recent videos, he's still harbouring a lot of anti-social energy that needs sorted out
I might be wrong, but I think he also stated that he has a condition that basically makes him more and more deaf, so doing ASMR is becoming less enjoyable for him.
The saddest part for me is if you go through the comment section on the most recent video of his. There are people pouring their heart out in concern for his well being and he's just responding with laughing emojis. His responses seem so out of character and odd.

Usually, suicidal people will do one of two things before they kill themselves. They'll either give all of their stuff away to someone they know that they can trust to take good care of their stuff or they'll assassinate their own character and push everyone and anything away that way it's "easier" for them to go through with it. And this is especially concerning considering the fact that he's talking about there being a "surprise" on 10/22.
That extra detail about 10/22 makes it that much more concerning. He's helped me, and tons of others get through tough times, to think that he couldn't take it even with all his work (art, really) is scary to say the least. All we can do is hope that he gets the help he needs before it's too late.
I hundred percent agree. I personally believe it’s easier to be seen in a really “bad light” than in a “good light”. The former is a more “no turning back” though.

He does this sometimes. Back in the day he bullied a creator named Hayley for having cleavage. That's all she did. Not overt clickbaity stuff, just literally having an anatomy. He spent a lot of time and energy ranting his inappropriate misogynistic opinions, and she released one video on it and stopped making videos soon after, fully deleting her channel. Everyone quickly forgot about how he bullied someone out of a creative space and he went on to be very successful. It left an awful taste in my mouth and I've avoided him ever since, but dude has a persona he puts on, and is just not a great guy outside of that.
Seriously?? Thats seriously crazy, this is why we need people like jojo blowing the whistle. For how wholesome the asmr community generally is, the crazy stuff seems to get pushed aside in favor of preserving the peace.

My heart sank once more when I saw Ephemeral Rift in the title again, man, shit. This literally was the man who got me into ASMR, and I've always enjoyed the positive and wholesome community around his channel. This is just really unfortunate to see. I'd really like to cope, and think this is just a case of hacked account, but it does not seem so.
I mean for copium it's possible the hacker got into his Twitter and UA-cam account. But it's been five days and I assume UA-cam at the least would've sorted him out by now, because when LTT got hacked UA-cam solved it within a few days

I feel like ER has been going through an immense mental breakdown lately to end up like this. It's all so heartbreaking, just feels like we're watching that man we all loved and respected so much die in front of us.
From what i've seen, he's just making his opinions openly known, whereas he was a bit subtler in the past. He's already made his preference for anarchism known in his past videos, as well as his disdain for authoritarianism and organized religion (he's an ex-catholic). I agree with a lot of his views, but to brush off the holocaust and two currently waged wars as insignificant in comparison to factory farms was a blantly insensitive choice, to say the least. I'm hoping he starts putting a higher price on human life, that's all I can say.
This feels a bit like a mental break. I know someone who went on a lot of incomprehensible moralistic rants before they completely lost touch with reality. If this is the case, I hope he gets the help he needs. If these are his legit opinions I really hope this is a big wakeup call for him and he can learn from this. I've always suspected that ER has some kind of Manic disorder just based on the way he has acted in a few non roleplay videos. I was kind of hoping that those were just him playing another kind of character. If he does indeed suffer from a mental disorder then we should all try and be compassionate towards this man. That being said, mental illness is not a hall pass to do or say anything you want and if he indeed needs help then he is responsible for seeking it.

He has made extremely controversial claims in the past wayyy before this ‘snap’ He has been saying racist things for years honestly, even some of his older videos from literally 11 years ago would talk about disturbing things like sex trafficking and slaughtering animals and how the world ‘refuses to pay attention’ which is true, but he would bring it up in a very aggressive way He has had these opinions for a long time and people need to actually realise he might not be a good person at all.

When I was really depressed, I also had a similar, INCREDIBLY cynical and nihilistic view on living life. Really glad I moved past that, but it’s still unfortunate to see people you used to look up to still caught in these thought patterns.

Yeah, it clicked with me that him saying that "I'm not a Vegan" is him essentially either A). Making him a hypocrite to his own beliefs or B). Showing that he see people as nothing more than animals to him.
@@achairstudios8730umm no it's very hard to be vegan especially if you don't have the money for it. i tried for years but it was too hard. couldn't eat anything anywhere, had to constantly take supplements, felt ill no matter what. his comparison is quite accurate. all living beings are equally as important and animals do suffer greatly for our convenience.

Ephemeral Rift suffered from drug addiction throughout much of his life, and he had a variety of mental health issues when he was younger. I would not be surprised if this was a relapse or some major mental health event. It could even be related to his home life. It seems like he wants to sacrifice his whole career.
He has a history of doing this. Every couple of years he has another controversy incident where he starts bullying people, making wildly anti-social, anti-society, takes. The guy has also been blatantly misogynist in the past. I stopped following him years ago as a result.

My uncle had a depressive psychotic break a few years ago that lasted for months before he went back on his medication and got additional help. He said some things in person and on social media he will never be able to take back. It may be the same situation here.
yeah I struggled with bipolarity and opioid addiction (the latter basically came about in large part because of a reckless drug binge during an extended manic episode) for years, and am convinced that social media is one of the worst things for mentally ill people that has ever existed, like I destroyed countless relationships, burned so many bridges, and while thankfully most of it is either not public anymore or not attached to my real world identity (I mean, I don't even use my real name on here), I still had an irreparable negative effect on a lot of people's lives, and have kind of just had to accept that there's a lot of people out there who will never trust me again because of it, and who I probably can't even truly apologize to, the best I can really do now is just to try to be a better person and not repeat those same patterns of behavior in the future. Ngl, though, seeing people in their 50s like ER *still* having episodes where they engage in this type of behavior scares me, as it makes me feel like I'll never *truly* recover, and will probably always be one spell of bad mental health (or drug relapse) away from being a complete piece of shit again. Some days I kind of feel like I'm doomed to eventually either destroy every relationship I have, or end my own life, or possibly both. Honestly, Kanye West is another person I look at and am just like "Jesus, not even wealth, fame, and tons of resources can save people with these tendencies from themselves, what chance do I have???"

I’ve seen these screenshots that you’re on about and tbh I don’t think they’re bad. The amount of female asmrtists that are only popular because they sexualise themselves is silly. They don’t work anywhere near as hard as some of the smaller channels yet make so much more money because they have boobs. Also the Facebook account is clearly meant as a parody of his character. Not of Paul himself.
I guess this would be a good example of parasocial relationships. What we see in ER's videos is a well situated, wholesome guy just wanting to help people relax in his videos, but we never see what people like these do when they aren't behind a camera. I do genuinely hope this is some misunderstanding or hacked situation but I'm not sure if i can hold out hope...
To be fair this isn’t like a discover on how he acts behind closed doors or something. This is stuff we can publicly see. Though looking at his twitter, it seems like it is him because he went on for a few days about needing stuff like a blouse and makeup for his next video. And today we see him in fact wearing makeup and a blouse. I will also say, looking through his twitter, it seems like yeah maybe he was always sort of like this (he made a poll asking if he should do “how to be a r-word ASMR”) which a lot of people would definitely say is offensive. This just got more traction because of course the n word is a more sensitive topic for most people and i assume most viewers didn’t know of his twitter
Yep, sounds like rift. I remember a video where he said the only reason he didn't make a video where he says slurs the whole time is because his wife argued against it.
He just posted an ‘apology’ video, and it was in no way a true apology. He essentially said “I’m sorry you were sensitive”, and then seemed to take more issue about people calling him racist rather than his use of the n word. He never even mentioned his Holocaust comments. I never would’ve thought Rift would be like this, I’m just so disappointed

This has been going on for 11 years with no spotlight on it. He made so many creepy ASMR videos when he started 11 years ago, and shared a lot of his controversial points on Animal rights, prostitution, child pornography and child sex trafficking which were delivered in a very aggressive way, On twitter over the last 5 years he has slowly lost his filter and it seems that December 2020 was the point he started this decline into negativity, slowly removing his filter and since Jan2023 has become more and more himself , and its a bad person who is emerging and he shouldnt be getting any support at all for this This is just a classic case of bad person pretending to be good until they cant hold up the disguise anymore.
The fact he can say the things he’s said and still have people care for him and hope he’s ok just speaks volumes to his impact in the asmr community. I seriously hope he gets better or the situation itself at least does.
If you check his videos a bunch have actually been actively promoting his fucked up ideals. He's been making it into a crusade, which is further compounded by him skimming through comments of all the people who said he convinced them and he gives them his approval.

Where it has all gone, from most women sexualizing with mentally ill things like ear licking and depressing girlfriend role plays, to obese and grotesque mukbang videos, the content creators have gone in a very mentally unstable and satanic route. Unfortunately, the ASMR Community does not seem to have a problem with this, so I'd say both the performers and the audience are very downhill. Reason why I decided not to start an ASMR channel.

My partner had a grandma who passed but they said she would make out of character things like this when her memory started to fail due to age... she was a devout christian who was quite liberal... she was the marva andor of her community. Then she rambled on about things in a negative way. Things she actively took part in, like women's suffrage, helping single mothers, etc. She slut shamed women and called single mothers "whores". It was very not like her. This all ended up being the result of her Alzheimer's I'm worried something similar is happening to ER

I’m fully aware that these content creators have lives outside of their channels but man it’s just sad to watch channels I basically grew up watching completely shit on the viewers so abruptly. I come to the Asmr community to escape all the problems of the world and get a good nights rest. To top it off I was hoping that he could somewhat salvage a decent apology but the video couldn’t be more far from it. Nearly half an hour of him basically saying I’m not sorry for what I said, your all just to sensitive. Been following him for 10+ years. I enjoyed his early content - then things got weird. It’s not the content per se, it’s that he started seeing himself as a genius and got reinforced by an audience. He used to be a humble family man, and it’s snowballed into this weird anarchist holier than thou character. Yes, he’s always had these types of takes, but they were more philosophical. But, as usually happens with these people, he got money. All of a sudden it’s hard to fight against money and society when you have money and a huge audience. Like Bernie sanders with 3 lake houses. You lose credibility. He has made videos in the past that we’re bizarre rants of aggression - like a bullied kid about to shoot up a school or something. He’s talked about his experiences and it wasn’t in a self reflective way - rather if he saw those bullies from the 80s today he’d blow their brains out. He’s got a lot of demons. He calls people “low IQ” out of insecurity. He isn’t smart. Creative, sure. But when you give someone like this a platform and reinforce their ideas as “genius” and give them some money and success - next thing you know they think they’re untouchable and every thought they have is gospel. And that brings us to today. The same “be sensitive to trans kids” guy is staying the N word and it’s okay cus he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Just backwards tunnel vision and narcissism. Think Kanye west. And no I don’t think it’s all mental issues I think it’s true narcissism. Haven’t watched him in a while but I hope he loses platform for this. The guy showed his true colors.

Well, I definitely don't think he's been hacked. I also don't think it's a mental break either. I think this is some kind of social commentary he's doing, a social experiment if you will. He's always been a little weird, but never THIS weird and he's quite often disavowed the very views he's spouting right now, so, yeah there's more to this that we're just not seeing yet.

People just finding out what a piece of work he is. Was one of the first asmr youtubers i watched back in the day and i appreciated some of the Lovecraft inspired bits he did but after a few years in started to show what a piece of work he can be.

One of which I’ve seen and has fucked with me is that he’s burning bridges so he is not dearly missed if he ends his life. This is genuinely awful to me as he has helped me through my own suicidal mindset and to see him like this hurts. This is genuinely shocking. It flips all of our perceptions about him being a wholesome down to earth kind man into an absolute delusional monster. It just feels unreal that someone like him would start saying such ill, gross, vile and upsetting things. I have no idea what the hell is going on in his head but he needs to be checked on, it feels like there is something terribly wrong with him. I started watching ASMR like 4 years ago, and started with Uncle E's Corvus videos. I've looked at the Twitter, and it's just fucking gut-wrenching. It doesn't make sense to me considering how I've always seen him. It bloody hurts. Edit: Surely something fucking happened in the four weeks he disappeared. It's incredibly disappointing to see him turn to this.

There's a reason why interventions exist for people who suffer from conditions that limit their ability to manage their way of of their own problems. If it were just tweets that were posted, then I would've just thought it would've been a hacker trying to extinguish his reputation. However, seeing how he posted about his new video without deleting the notorious tweets and also his blog reflecting what he was saying on Twitter, I think it's pretty probable that he posted those tweets, sadly. Like many of you, and Jojo, I've been watching ER for what seems like almost a decade. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but to me, it seems like he posted some really gnarly stuff. I've seen some of his podcast and I could tell he was a very opinionated person, which can also be seen in some of his videos from time to time, but in no way did I ever see this coming. I love ER, but if it turns out what he did is actually him, then there would be a sour taste leftover in my mouth and I might not be able to watch him anymore. It is in fact a misunderstanding. ER has been making a bit of sharing a body with an alien. So the inhuman tweets are literally the alien using his twitter.
Personally, I’m very concerned about him, especially the October 22nd announcement. I’m very concerned for ever he has planned for that day. He’s currently replying to a lot of comments under his most recent videos and doubling down on his Twitter comments. A lot of the comments under his most recent video are actually coming from a place of genuine concern. I personally am concerned as well. I found him through an older video of him checking in on you late at night where you’re suicidal. In my opinion, you don’t make mental health related videos like that unless you have some relation or experience. It was a very nice video. I think his videos surrounding mental health themes come from experience. I worry that the October 22nd video will be a very offensive video with the intent to blow up his account, and it may function as a sort of suicide note. I’m definitely very concerned for the 22nd.
He's always made his problems with capitalism, religion, and authoritarianism known in his "philosophy/life experience" videos, where he was well-spoken throughout. I have a mate who went from cheery to gloomy like this, and he was diagnosed with BPD and is now in prison for breach of a restraining order. I don't think this is a personality shift, this seems more like self-sabotage to me, from major depression. His focus on the wars would also suggest to me that he may be feeling afraid. I hope he gets better soon xx
They are valid points, however they are all said in very non-Shalont and sarcastic ways which has deeply upset (offended) the public. And to be frank something being fucked up or not is relative, and the general opinion now in the world is that his opinions are fucked up, but they are not really.
This is heartbreaking for me, I have been watching him for years. He made my day so much better with his videos, I never expected him to do this. It's also absurd how some of his fans are calling people soft for being mad at rift, even though finding what he said to be shocking was nowhere near soft. Haven’t liked him since I saw his weird, sexist interactions with GentleWhispering years and years ago. He's got incel energy, albeit Alan Moore Old man incel energy. These radical offensive takes aren’t surprising.
I think he carries a lot of hate towards the world in his heart- and I think he has for a while. I also think he has this idea that "Hating everyone equally" makes him morally superior, but this just ends in oppressive and hurtful actions. He has that strange moral superiority that I think some people develop through hardship or through observing the world through to cynical a lense. It's like he doesn't care about any people.
I think you hit the nail right on the head with this comment, well said. Unfortunately, I struggle with that exact headspace. Because of how you've suffered, you feel like you deserve more than people who haven't, that all the crap you went through actually "meant something." You feel "better" and "stronger" than people who haven't suffered like you have. In reality, it doesn't make you better than anyone else, just sadder, more lonely, and in need of more help than "normal" people. I've been trying to break through that mindset, and it's hard. I was just as uncaring about other people as E.R. seems to be now. Only with regular therapy and many coping mechanisms, was I able to be empathetic again. I hope he can do the same, genuinely, he's helped a lot of people through some tough times.

Seven months later, I think the current state of his channel is honestly really telling.
I'm pretty sure for the past year or so, Paul has been going through a sort of crisis. Maybe a mid-life crisis, or something. He has pretty much completely quit making ASMR content and has shifted towards doing "relaxing outdoor videos" that his viewerbase just doesn't click with. He does seem to be doing a lot better, and has actually voiced his rather strong distaste for making ASMR content as a whole a little over a month ago. He's seemingly completely abandoned the Rift Universe for content that he can make in a "less controlling environment".
He said in a vlog of his that he quit making his traditional ASMR videos because of how much of a controlled environment you have to be in when filming, and how he often felt he had little "control" over how his videos were created. I don't mean to psychoanalyze the dude or anything, but I genuinely think that he had a mental breakdown last year and has now decided to pin the root cause of it on creating ASMR content, because of how much of a controlled environment you have to film the video in.
He's still one of my favorite ASMRtists out there and I really hope he'll go back to making his Rift Universe videos soon. So do many others, I feel.

Honestly, I would rather he make his "outdoor videos" if it makes him happy, than continue to film regular ASMR content when he clearly has no passion for it anymore.
Kanye West, for example, still releases music, but there's been a sharp drop off in quality compared to his previous albums since 2016. He's even admitted in interviews that he doesn't take it seriously anymore and pretty much just does it solely for the money now...and it shows; (not to mention, the antisemitism controversy has permanently tainted his discography for a lot of people).
I fear ER would be flirting with a similar downward spiral, making content that he not only doesn't care about anymore, but actively dislikes. If you ask me though, I think he would be better off taking a break from UA-cam altogether. Just based on some of the replies I've read from him on recent videos, he's still harbouring a lot of anti-social energy that needs sorted out

Usually, suicidal people will do one of two things before they kill themselves. They'll either give all of their stuff away to someone they know that they can trust to take good care of their stuff or they'll assassinate their own character and push everyone and anything away that way it's "easier" for them to go through with it. And this is especially concerning considering the fact that he's talking about there being a "surprise" on 10/22.

That extra detail about 10/22 makes it that much more concerning. He's helped me, and tons of others get through tough times, to think that he couldn't take it even with all his work (art, really) is scary to say the least. All we can do is hope that he gets the help he needs before it's too late.

He does this sometimes. Back in the day he bullied a creator named Hayley for having cleavage. That's all she did. Not overt clickbaity stuff, just literally having an anatomy. He spent a lot of time and energy ranting his inappropriate misogynistic opinions, and she released one video on it and stopped making videos soon after, fully deleting her channel. Everyone quickly forgot about how he bullied someone out of a creative space and he went on to be very successful. It left an awful taste in my mouth and I've avoided him ever since, but dude has a persona he puts on, and is just not a great guy outside of that.

My heart sank once more when I saw Ephemeral Rift in the title again, man, shit. This literally was the man who got me into ASMR, and I've always enjoyed the positive and wholesome community around his channel. This is just really unfortunate to see. I'd really like to cope, and think this is just a case of hacked account, but it does not seem so.
I mean for copium it's possible the hacker got into his Twitter and UA-cam account. But it's been five days and I assume UA-cam at the least would've sorted him out by now, because when LTT got hacked UA-cam solved it within a few days

I feel like ER has been going through an immense mental breakdown lately to end up like this. It's all so heartbreaking, just feels like we're watching that man we all loved and respected so much die in front of us.
From what i've seen, he's just making his opinions openly known, whereas he was a bit subtler in the past. He's already made his preference for anarchism known in his past videos, as well as his disdain for authoritarianism and organized religion (he's an ex-catholic). I agree with a lot of his views, but to brush off the holocaust and two currently waged wars as insignificant in comparison to factory farms was a blantly insensitive choice, to say the least. I'm hoping he starts putting a higher price on human life, that's all I can say.

I've always suspected that ER has some kind of Manic disorder just based on the way he has acted in a few non roleplay videos. I was kind of hoping that those were just him playing another kind of character. If he does indeed suffer from a mental disorder then we should all try and be compassionate towards this man.
That being said, mental illness is not a hall pass to do or say anything you want and if he indeed needs help then he is responsible for seeking it.

@@achairstudios8730umm no it's very hard to be vegan especially if you don't have the money for it. i tried for years but it was too hard. couldn't eat anything anywhere, had to constantly take supplements, felt ill no matter what. his comparison is quite accurate. all living beings are equally as important and animals do suffer greatly for our convenience.

Ephemeral Rift suffered from drug addiction throughout much of his life, and he had a variety of mental health issues when he was younger. I would not be surprised if this was a relapse or some major mental health event. It could even be related to his home life. It seems like he wants to sacrifice his whole career.

My uncle had a depressive psychotic break a few years ago that lasted for months before he went back on his medication and got additional help. He said some things in person and on social media he will never be able to take back. It may be the same situation here.
yeah I struggled with bipolarity and opioid addiction (the latter basically came about in large part because of a reckless drug binge during an extended manic episode) for years, and am convinced that social media is one of the worst things for mentally ill people that has ever existed, like I destroyed countless relationships, burned so many bridges, and while thankfully most of it is either not public anymore or not attached to my real world identity (I mean, I don't even use my real name on here), I still had an irreparable negative effect on a lot of people's lives, and have kind of just had to accept that there's a lot of people out there who will never trust me again because of it, and who I probably can't even truly apologize to, the best I can really do now is just to try to be a better person and not repeat those same patterns of behavior in the future.
Ngl, though, seeing people in their 50s like ER *still* having episodes where they engage in this type of behavior scares me, as it makes me feel like I'll never *truly* recover, and will probably always be one spell of bad mental health (or drug relapse) away from being a complete piece of shit again. Some days I kind of feel like I'm doomed to eventually either destroy every relationship I have, or end my own life, or possibly both.
Honestly, Kanye West is another person I look at and am just like "Jesus, not even wealth, fame, and tons of resources can save people with these tendencies from themselves, what chance do I have???"

I’ve seen these screenshots that you’re on about and tbh I don’t think they’re bad. The amount of female asmrtists that are only popular because they sexualise themselves is silly. They don’t work anywhere near as hard as some of the smaller channels yet make so much more money because they have boobs. Also the Facebook account is clearly meant as a parody of his character. Not of Paul himself.
I guess this would be a good example of parasocial relationships. What we see in ER's videos is a well situated, wholesome guy just wanting to help people relax in his videos, but we never see what people like these do when they aren't behind a camera. I do genuinely hope this is some misunderstanding or hacked situation but I'm not sure if i can hold out hope...
To be fair this isn’t like a discover on how he acts behind closed doors or something. This is stuff we can publicly see. Though looking at his twitter, it seems like it is him because he went on for a few days about needing stuff like a blouse and makeup for his next video. And today we see him in fact wearing makeup and a blouse.
I will also say, looking through his twitter, it seems like yeah maybe he was always sort of like this (he made a poll asking if he should do “how to be a r-word ASMR”) which a lot of people would definitely say is offensive. This has been going on for 11 years with no spotlight on it.
He made so many creepy ASMR videos when he started 11 years ago, and shared a lot of his controversial points on Animal rights, prostitution, child pornography and child sex trafficking which were delivered in a very aggressive way,
On twitter over the last 5 years he has slowly lost his filter and it seems that December 2020 was the point he started this decline into negativity, slowly removing his filter and since Jan2023 has become more and more himself , and its a bad person who is emerging and he shouldnt be getting any support at all for this
This is just a classic case of bad person pretending to be good until they cant hold up the disguise anymore.
The fact he can say the things he’s said and still have people care for him and hope he’s ok just speaks volumes to his impact in the asmr community. I seriously hope he gets better or the situation itself at least does.

Where it has all gone, from most women sexualizing with mentally ill things like ear licking and depressing girlfriend role plays, to obese and grotesque mukbang videos, the content creators have gone in a very mentally unstable and satanic route. Unfortunately, the ASMR Community does not seem to have a problem with this, so I'd say both the performers and the audience are very downhill. Reason why I decided not to start an ASMR channel.

I’m fully aware that these content creators have lives outside of their channels but man it’s just sad to watch channels I basically grew up watching completely shit on the viewers so abruptly. I come to the Asmr community to escape all the problems of the world and get a good nights rest. To top it off I was hoping that he could somewhat salvage a decent apology but the video couldn’t be more far from it. Nearly half an hour of him basically saying I’m not sorry for what I said, your all just to sensitive. He even hit us with the cliché “I have black friends” response and not once mentioned anything about the disgusting comment he made about the holocaust.

Been following him for 10+ years. I enjoyed his early content - then things got weird. It’s not the content per se, it’s that he started seeing himself as a genius and got reinforced by an audience. He used to be a humble family man, and it’s snowballed into this weird anarchist holier than thou character. Yes, he’s always had these types of takes, but they were more philosophical. But, as usually happens with these people, he got money. All of a sudden it’s hard to fight against money and society when you have money and a huge audience. Like Bernie sanders with 3 lake houses. You lose credibility. He has made videos in the past that we’re bizarre rants of aggression - like a bullied kid about to shoot up a school or something. He’s talked about his experiences and it wasn’t in a self reflective way - rather if he saw those bullies from the 80s today he’d blow their brains out. He’s got a lot of demons. He calls people “low IQ” out of insecurity. He isn’t smart. Creative, sure. But when you give someone like this a platform and reinforce their ideas as “genius” and give them some money and success - next thing you know they think they’re untouchable and every thought they have is gospel. And that brings us to today. The same “be sensitive to trans kids” guy is staying the N word and it’s okay cus he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Just backwards tunnel vision and narcissism. Think Kanye west. And no I don’t think it’s all mental issues I think it’s true narcissism. If it were just tweets that were posted, then I would've just thought it would've been a hacker trying to extinguish his reputation. However, seeing how he posted about his new video without deleting the notorious tweets and also his blog reflecting what he was saying on Twitter, I think it's pretty probable that he posted those tweets, sadly. Like many of you, and Jojo, I've been watching ER for what seems like almost a decade. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but to me, it seems like he posted some really gnarly stuff. A lot of the comments under his most recent video are actually coming from a place of genuine concern.
I personally am concerned as well. I found him through an older video of him checking in on you late at night where you’re suicidal. In my opinion, you don’t make mental health related videos like that unless you have some relation or experience. It was a very nice video. I think his videos surrounding mental health themes come from experience. I worry that the October 22nd video will be a very offensive video with the intent to blow up his account, and it may function as a sort of suicide note. I’m definitely very concerned for the 22nd.

I have read through some of the tweets on his twitter and i am SPEECHLESS , of all people , i would never have suspected Ephemeral Rift could he even think those things let alone tweet them for the world to see , i am saddened 🙁
His apology was so bad too what the hell. He used extra slurs in his apology post, refused to address the holocaust comments and laughed at and made fun of fans who were genuinely concerned. Then his apology video was basically calling everyone sensitive and still ignoring everything but the N word situation. Im so disappointed I dont even have the words to express it. Wow, this video made me aware of even more than i previously was. I'm absolutely baffled.

Breaks my heart, listened to him and fell asleep to him back in 2013, loved his plague doctor videos and his fallout rp he did once, but to see him fall down a mental health spiral like this is so sad.
Don't worry. He has always been like this. It's not a spiral, it's a flat line that's been going on for at least seven years. He's spent years picking fights with other ASMR UA-camrs, making truly vile public comments to upset others for no reason, ditching long time friends at the drop of a hat for reasons nobody can discern. He is a narcissist who enjoys negative attention. He's not mentally ill, he's just an extremely antisocial and nihilistic bully.

I'm not even sure if he's gonna shave his body hair off, just like in the 1982 film adaptation.

This is nothing new for Ephemeral Rift. There's a lot of screenshots of his Facebook group from back in the day saying similar stuff and also attacking other ASMR artists. I guess this open secret was a bit more secret then I thought.

I have a mate who went from cheery to gloomy like this, and he was diagnosed with BPD and is now in prison for breach of a restraining order. I don't think this is a personality shift, this seems more like self-sabotage to me, from major depression. His focus on the wars would also suggest to me that he may be feeling afraid. I hope he gets better soon xx

This is heartbreaking for me, I have been watching him for years. He made my day so much better with his videos, I never expected him to do this.
It's also absurd how some of his fans are calling people soft for being mad at rift, even though finding what he said to be shocking was nowhere near soft.
I hope that whatever is going on in rifts life gets better, this is a dark day for the asmr community.

This feels a lot like some sort of mental break to me. I genuinely just hope he's okay and has people to support him.
I think he carries a lot of hate towards the world in his heart- and I think he has for a while. I also think he has this idea that "Hating everyone equally" makes him morally superior, but this just ends in oppressive and hurtful actions. He has that strange moral superiority that I think some people develop through hardship or through observing the world through to cynical a lense. It's like he doesn't care about any people.
I think you hit the nail right on the head with this comment, well said. Unfortunately, I struggle with that exact headspace. Because of how you've suffered, you feel like you deserve more than people who haven't, that all the crap you went through actually "meant something." You feel "better" and "stronger" than people who haven't suffered like you have. In reality, it doesn't make you better than anyone else, just sadder, more lonely, and in need of more help than "normal" people. I've been trying to break through that mindset, and it's hard. I was just as uncaring about other people as E.R. seems to be now. Only with regular therapy and many coping mechanisms, was I able to be empathetic again. I hope he can do the same, genuinely, he's helped a lot of people through some tough times.
There's a word for it - misanthropy, i don't feel any anger towards him, nor would i blame him for his thoughts and opinions, it's a shitty world with more two-faced than honest humans. There's much uglier outcomes for hatred, what he did doesn't even scrape the surface of the worst.

jokes aside, this is honestly just soul-crushing, unlike most drama that has me eating popcorn like the gif in this video. ive watched rift since middle school (now in college) and ive always had a feeling that he is a bit out there (its basically part of his branding) and ive known about the nihilistic attitude but this is a whole other level...
its one thing to not care about people, its another thing to use peoples deaths and tragedy to further some message about hypocrisy of people.
you can point out hypocrisy without spitting in the face of people who are currently grieving

@@DevilJhoMama i dont say nihilistic cuz he rejects religion, im agnostic personally. i say it because ive watched a lot of his videos that deal more with outlook on life and they tend to have themes and statements of how most things in life dont matter.
