Just to give an accurate history of this watch face: it dates to the mid 1930's, in an era when dials were made by companies separate from the watchmakers. In this case, it was "Weber & Barai", in the city of Pforzheim. In 1937, both Lange & Sohne and Stowa shipped watches using this dial. Lange & Sohne was officially customer #1 for this dial, if you want to declare an official first, but Stowa was customer #3, shipping a model called the "Antea" the same year. You can find pictures of both on the web, the dial is virtually unchanged from what you see today. Same number font, same number placement & small seconds dial. In 1992, Nomos shipped their first homage of this "1930's German dress watch" and made it popular all over again, and they have not tried hard to correct the misconception that this watch design is an original of theirs, as they've continued on to create an entire line of watches based on this. Around 2015, Sea-Gull shipped an homage of the Nomos under the name "Rodina" (also with the ST17 movement, which makes me believe Seestern is somehow connected under the hood to Sea-Gull...) - which was so popular that counterfeit knock-offs of the Rodina began to appear! I have a (real) Rodina, and it's beautiful. So I don't knock Seestern for shipping this, but I agree the word "Original" is stupid and off-putting. In the Rodina version, the word under the brand name is "AUTOMATIC", which would have been 100 times better. (By the way, IMHO the Seestern SeaQ homage is the best bang-for-the-buck NH35-powered dive watch existing today, so they know how to do *some* things right...)
Could be worse, 30 years ago in Spitalfield Market I could have bought a watch that had 24 Carrots written on the dial. I regret not buying it to this day.
I was expecting something really bad! This is nothing! I have no problem with it saying original on the dial. It's actually a nice looking watch. I like it!
Maybe I'm a watch snob too, but there is nothing appealing about copies to me. You can make a Toyota MR2 look a bit like a Ferrari, but you're pretty sad if you do. There is a big difference between playing Mozart, and being Mozart. A big difference between drawing the Taj Mahal, and designing the Taj Mahal. Copies, or whatever flattering name you want to call them to make your self feel better, have zero design value, because the design is stolen.
The Chinese companies don't really care what's on the dial. They love using random numbers, letters, words, and names. Pagani design had some random letters on the dial, and when I asked the store what does it mean, their answer was "it's for style"😔
I think that's a case of translation issues. Seestern was probably thinking of "Original" more as a word as part of a brand name (after all they made also a watch based on a Glashütte Original) rather than a meaningful adjective. As a bilingual German/English speaker FWIW I would also say that the word feels in this case more like an adjective in English and more as part of branding in German.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I don't speak German, but I would guess that the German word they were probably thinking of would translate to something like "Classic" in English.
Great video as always, Jody! To be honest, if I were in the market for that style of watch, I might consider it. At $120, I can't immediately see anything terrible about the specs themselves for that price. 50m is a little weak in terms of water resistance, but this isn't a dive watch, so that's acceptable. Sure, it takes a lot of balls to put "Original" on that dial, but maybe that's a translation issue. I could see putting "Classic" on the dial, since it's kind of a classic style at this point. And yeah, I wouldn't take it to watch meetups and show it around for people to examine under a loupe, but you have to know your audience. If you're the type of person who buys homages, you're not taking them off your wrist and letting people examine them anyway, unless someone actually *says*, "Hey, that's a nice watch!". And the improvements over an actual Nomos make this worth considering -- if you're the type of person who can countenance an homage in the first place. :)
Omg this is absolutely ridiculous what a great package I love the watch I just can't believe that one word original would stop some people purchasing this timepiece how picky can some people be is this a April the 1st joke??? who cares.... For anyone who wants the Nomos look and feel but can't afford or totally refuses to pay the absolutely ridiculous eye-wateringly high prices that Nomos charge this is a great option insane value for money with the bulletproof seagull engine... When you see great value watches like this and other Chinese offerings it makes you realise just how much every single German and Swiss luxury watch brand is ripping us off with their ridiculously high RRPs... The profit margins these luxury watch brands work to is absolutely staggering... Bordering on criminal how on gods earth do they justify their RRPs.... in house movements.... What a load of tosh..... Thank you China you really do shame these European luxury watch houses.... You give us hoi pollei the opportunity to wear great looking timepeices.. These European luxury watch brands don't seem to understand that not everyone on planet earth is a fatcat or premier ship footballer the majority of us can't afford their bloated prices.... Are you listening omega Rolex etc...
Well, NOMOS did copy a Lange from the early 1930s. It really did exist. And now people everywhere think it's an original NOMOS design. Except this is actually better proportioned than most NOMOS, even if the "Oroginal" is superfluous and inaccurate. Still, having our own realities is so cool! :)
Seaman was a term seafaring men used to describe themselves in the olden days. If you called them sailors, they would angrily correct you. Yes the word sounds funny today and can have a different meaning but at one time it was the proper thing to say.
I don't mind the word original as long as it is spelt correctly, which it has. It has become like Seestern style to put a script word beneath their logo/trademark, just as they had with their pelagos titanium homage. Original doesn't have to refer to the design, it's an Original Seestern watch, not a replica, although I doubt anyone is interested in making a Seestern replica at the moment.
Today I’m wearing a $100 Chinese watch that’s already five minutes fast and has Chronometer on the dial. And one of my nicest-looking cheap watches is a R0lex homage that’s branded Stuhrling Original.
Not only Seestern does do this, but also Feice does this with the FM201. A Tangente lookalike also with "Original" on it. I don't know why this is with these Nomos homages ^^
I strongly suspect that Omos actually has Nomos on the dial, i.e. these are outright replicas, thinly disguised as homages on Ali. Usually they do not have pictorial customer reviews as that would give away the thing and Ali would whack the listing.
I seriously looked at Nomos a while back but those ridiculous lugs put me right off. It will be interesting to see if Seastern revise the dial in line with your comments.
Seagull also makes a Nomos homage that is quite nice. I purchased to decide if I liked Nomos enough to buy one. Great for $150. Ended up Nomos is not my style so I sold it.
Honestly that’s a damn good looking watch. I’ll never spend that kind of money on a Nomos, so when they come out with a white dial version without the “Original”, I’ll be getting one
They definitely need to change or eliminate the word "Original". Fwiw, exhibition backs are sometimes handy. One of my many watches with the ubiquitous NH35 movement developed a easy to diagnose (and replace) bad bearing rotor. Great to be able to see the issue immediately. I would have otherwise wasted more money and labor on a new movement that was not needed.
There a lot of chinese watches I like that I seldom pull the trigger on because of the name and/or logo. Case in point "Hroudland", "Poedagar", "Berny (all I can think of is 'weekend at Bernie's')", etc. It feels like these watch companies just threw some scrabble tiles in a velvet bag, picked out some consonants and vowels and Viola! Our new watch company!
I think it's just me, but it seems different enough to justify the "original" on the dial...the outer edge, the sub dial are both differnet enough...the markers, indecies, numeral are bigger and a slight improvement to my eyes to the nomos...I like it tbh...would i buy one...NO! but, its not something i can see myself wearingnoften enough...great video as always though and certainly gets the hits, likes and comments flowing eh
Hello, I just purchased the airy blue. It is on its way. Comparing it with NOMOS Ahoi neomatik 38 date sky, it seems like the color is even lighter blue in Seestern right?
To be fair to them, this is a really well executed watch. One word doesn't define it, I would say it's worth overlooking for what you get. Maybe spend less time focusing on that and actually review the watch next time. You gave the Henry Archer a fair review yesterday and that had a typo on the case back FFS 😂👍🏻
I mean, the reviews for these types of things are exactly as you would expect: it looks like the watch its copying, but worse quality. The only things worth reviewing really are the differences. What’s different about this watch? The words on the dial 😂 not much to say, honestly
Gonna have to disagree with Jody on this one. Is putting "original" on a clomage watch a bad look? yes. Is it any worse than putting "design" in a clomage brand name? No. If we all give Pagani the pass, it's a bit hypnocritical to not give this one the same leeway. That's my opinion anyways.
Your bleeping commentary on this one had me rolling. And if Seestern is reading the comments, I adore Bauhaus design and would definitely have bought this watch....had the word 'Original' been left off the dial. One, its totally inappropriate given the design of the watch, and two, Bauhaus is about minimalism, so as little text on the dial as possible should have been the approach. In my case, this is a $100+ lost opportunity Seestern..
Eh, it doesn't bother me that much, it's pretty much perfect dial in my book, as the whole watch is pretty perfect because it's not a diver either. Would i buy this watch? No, it's not the type i imagine i would having on my wrist but i don't judge if anyone else does
Perhaps they could take out the last two letters AL and Seestern could claim "The point or place where something begins" Just got to love the confused anachronisms with Chinese products. Would love to be a fly on the wall in the marketing department!
May 1st 2024. Jody, I clicked on the link you left. I believe they watched the video. They changed the word "original" to "automatic". Greetings from Brasil - with s...original word...;)
What a fantastic review! I would love to have a watch that Jody roasted. Looking at that dial will remind me of his lite harded chuckle and bleeped out f-bomb.😂
Love your content bro. So enjoyable to witness your passion for watches. You’re the guy I tribute to my newest hobby…and the guy I throw under the bus when my wife wonders where my newest watch came from.
I can't see where it really matters. They are already copying someone else's watch and many of us happily purchase these Ali Express homages without any guilt, so what difference does it make what it says on the dial.
The Rodina (a subdivision of sea-gull) version of the Nomos is a much better bet,but I don't think they make it anymore but Sea-gull do,at a price.............................
Update: Newer models look exactly the same, but replaced the word "original" for "automatic" using the same lovely font. I'm seriously thinking about acquiring a Seestern automatic, because automatic is no crime. 😂 All in all getting such a cute model with mechanic movement, a decent leather band and sapphire crystal for that price range is a no-brainer imo
When you’ve copied the entire watch, the word ‘original’ on the dial is not something I’d personally make a fuss about! Anyone who buys this knows they’re not getting a Nomos. If you were going down the trademark/ copyright route, the word ‘original’ is pretty much the only thing which isn’t a likeness of the nomos.
Nice watch. Except for the epic fail on the dial. At least they spelled Original correctly! Reminds me of how much I love your vids! This one left me wanting more. Just too short!
Ive had good luck with a couple sugess but just recently that changed i bought there daytona anniversary chronograph for like 480 US lol and the reset on chrono didn't work so i sent it back like 2 months ago and haven't heard a word... lesson learned
Honestly this watch would be great for my 11 year old stepson as a step up from the Swatches he wears; I don’t think he would care about the word on the dial and he likes looking at the movement. So “ehh.”
From the perspective of a "watch person" you are right but I suspect that most people that buy watches on Aliexpress aren't and probably couldn't care less.
Just took out my Rodina "original" and it looks the same. Without the crown guard, is a new dial and hand set really any update over the past Tangomat homages?
It's fine i reckon. Seestern generally produce great quality for not much dosh - in a world of homages/clomages/copies it doesn't offend me one iota that 'original' is on the dial. Jodie's Sunday Weatherspoons roast (not great)
You got the right," seriously," what joke 🤣 bummer next? I would it change the dial ,everything else spot on zise, dimensions, to bad.. thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this miss Opurtunity..until next time.
At least Seestern didn’t misspell “original”. I guess only watch enthusiasts would know that they ripped off a Nomos design, no one else would know or care. Otherwise it’s a nice watch…
After several bad experiences with cheap Chinese watches - slow shipping, non-existent customer service, crappy quality, etc., I’m done with them. There are so many affordable watches not made in China, it’s easy to avoid them. The organized crime/sweat shop element is a whole different discussion.
I have more of a problem with "Seestern" I can't get the image of a Mexican lavatory out of my head. "Ey señor plumber ...I have problem with my seestern, it no flush!"
Hello! i am aware this isnt related to the video, but my searches online have come to no conclusion so i figured id ask here. I recently got a watch from my grandpa, and its from a brand i had never heard of - Dugena. i know its a german brand but there isnt much about it online. Its a beautiful old quartz watch and it was in mint condition. Does anyone have any insight about the brand? i have no idea if its a decent brand if its more about fashion etc
If I were Seestern I would recall these fix the dial and let reviewers know they have done so. In the long run it will be better PR and cheaper for them (as opposed to keeping it and losing future sales).
Criticism well earned. I just coincidentally was on their page where they insist you call them a “microbrand”. They make slick watches but yikes that was a major goof.
They mixed Glashutte Original with Nomos, swapped the Nomos for Seestern et voila! Introducing Seestern Original 😂 Srsly tho, since discovering this Seestern I've been thinking of selling my Nomos Tangente if I can get a decent return for it. I prefer the lume and shorter lugs, abhor the crown guards on the Nomos Ahoi which I would never buy anyway since the point is massive savings for the same look as my Tangente.
An Original Nomos Tangente copy......It does look quite nice. Much thicker than a real Nomos though. I'm a bit on the fence with Nomos's designs. I guess this could get you trying on the style and seeing if it works without spending a lot of money. I still wouldn't buy it though! :)
Looks like they changed the “Original” to “Automatic”, but in still in that loud font that doesn’t really match anything else on the dial. I think it’s an improvement, but It would look much better if they just kept it simple without the extra line of text. I’m still holding out for a traditional white or silver-white dial. I can’t think of a situation where a champagne or light blue dress watch would actually look better on wrist than plain white.
Seems they have taken the word 'ORIGINAL' off SOME of the pictures and have put 'AUTOMATIC' on some. I think they are going to try to backpedal and maybe dump the ones that have the 'ORIGINAL' for cheap and go with 'AUTOMATIC' instead. Its a nice looking watch, IMO, and if they do make them with the 'AUTOMATIC' then they have a winner....I do agree about the caseback....its not an ST-1901.
They updated the watch; it now says 'automatic' instead of 'original', they also put a statement on the watch its page.
Honestly, quite like it. 😊
Why didn't they go with something like "Since 2021"? That'll kick their heritage into high gear.
Guanqin, SInce 8500............
.....Cheronometer 😅
👍😅 Original since 2021!

Interesting! Thanks for the history lesson - much appreciated.
Again, like the SeaQ, this design isn't really owned by anyone.
So.... Seestern used the original Bauhause design, rather than a new Bauhause design. You can make the word make sense, I just don't l ike the font.
Interesting perspective, thanks for sharing
So basically it's an homage of a homage and two homages = an original‼️
Great comment. I was just about to write that Nomos design is not an original one, it's a 1:1 copy :D This was very informative.
Could be worse, 30 years ago in Spitalfield Market I could have bought a watch that had 24 Carrots written on the dial. I regret not buying it to this day.
Wow.
😅
It should have had Bugs Bunny on the dial .
And 14 parsnips , sponsored by watership down .
Aw man, I've heard some stories of regret, but I physically felt the regret after reading this one.
I was expecting something really bad! This is nothing! I have no problem with it saying original on the dial. It's actually a nice looking watch. I like it!
I actually like the watch a lot. I’ll never be able to afford a NOMOS. But I’d roll the dice on a gen 2 of this.
Have some class man! Ffs you can do better than throw hard earned money at Chinese photocopier operators!

@@mstevens113yeah! Instead you should throw your hard earned money at * checks notes * _GERMAN_ photocopier operators.

BiDen is far more strange name to have on the dial than Original
I think that's a case of translation issues. @@BrianHartman Ah, that makes sense and does explain things.

How dare Nomos copy that Seestern!
Also Lange just bought the dial back in the days.. So no Lange design..
At least Seiko didn't name one of their watches the QC
Of course Nomos couldn't print 'Original' either. Tangente is a homage to a design released in 1937 by both Lange & Sohn and Stowa.
Seestern actual has done worse than this. Their Subbie homage has the word "SEAMAN" on the dial ...I just can't get over that.

Perhaps they could take out the last two letters AL and Seestern could claim "The point or place where something begins" Just got to love the confused anachronisms with Chinese products. Would love to be a fly on the wall in the marketing department!

By far the quickest roast of all time Jody
That wasn't even time enough for a microwave fella 👍🏻
When you’ve copied the entire watch, the word ‘original’ on the dial is not something I’d personally make a fuss about! Anyone who buys this knows they’re not getting a Nomos. If you were going down the trademark/ copyright route, the word ‘original’ is pretty much the only thing which isn’t a likeness of the nomos.
... and Jody drops an F-bomb. Worth every second of the video. It was Original!
I agree, it's to close to the nomos design and nomos watches arent even expensive, go for the og🙏
It's fine i reckon. Seestern generally produce great quality for not much dosh - in a world of homages/clomages/copies it doesn't offend me one iota that 'original' is on the dial.
Jodie's Sunday Weatherspoons roast (not great)
LOL! Fun roast video Jody! Now go after Pagani Design... I don't think they do any design at all.... lol!
Do you know any good alternatives to a Nomos that does not cost over 300 $.
A well deserved roasting and a lightning fast review of the ‘original’ too. Full marks from me Jody… sorry what? No no not the watch, the roasting 🔥🔥🔥
You got the right," seriously," what joke 🤣 bummer next? I would it change the dial ,everything else spot on zise, dimensions, to bad.. thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this miss Opurtunity..until next time.
Are there any other Nomos clomage that also make the lugs?
I see many copy the dial but with standard case/lugs.
I feel sorry for them actually. They're trying to sell a decent watch and you're having a hee haw fest over it.
Maybe Nomos takes a cue and gets better on their lengths. Quick fun one Jody. Thanks!
I came across the Stührling brand, which also has the “Original” typography. Is it a legit brand or related to clomage other brands like Seestern?
It is very original considering Nomos will not have such short lugs.
Now do this with the club sport and I'll be interested
It’s a handsome watch. I’d have no problem wearing it, but for my preference for heritage pieces.
At least Seestern didn’t misspell “original”. I guess only watch enthusiasts would know that they ripped off a Nomos design, no one else would know or care. Otherwise it’s a nice watch…
It looks like they've just changed the "original" to "automatic" on the images on their aliexpress store, might actually pick one up now 😂
That is a shame it is pretty good looking. I bought a Chinese watch for a laugh because the make was Sewar.😂
Oh no lol
Let's go Sounders!!!! Way to represent Jody!!
Lovely watch
If I were Seestern I would recall these fix the dial and let reviewers know they have done so. In the long run it will be better PR and cheaper for them (as opposed to keeping it and losing future sales).
Criticism well earned. I just coincidentally was on their page where they insist you call them a “microbrand”. They make slick watches but yikes that was a major goof.
They mixed Glashutte Original with Nomos, swapped the Nomos for Seestern et voila!
Introducing Seestern Original 😂
Srsly tho, since discovering this Seestern I've been thinking of selling my Nomos Tangente if I can get a decent return for it.
No watches should be taken seriously.
As with any material object 👍
Originally, there was "copy" on the dial, but these people are geniuses.
Maybe next time?! Ha!
I purchased airy blue thinking of wearing with navy blue dresses (both formal or casual), just like NOMOS Ahoi neomatik 38 date sky.
What's the story behind my hometown team, the Seattle Sounders t-shirt?
With a closed caseback, I would buy it :) The originality stands in the luminova LOL
Cheers for the feature, Jody. ;)
The word "Original" would not be a problem for me. But the design does not really touch me.
Well done Jody. Down to £85 today - even more affordable. Ah, the power 😂👍
Apparently they took a cue from Sturling "Original."
Can’t wait for you to review the Pagani Original ……😂
Jody what about the lume test?... Good lume would trump the name
