Dotted basslines for deep grooves

- Let's flex those bass sound design muscles again, and learn a new bass formula: the dotted bassline! A dotted bassline is nothing more than a short bass sound that plays in a pattern of 3/16th notes, but with a little love it can be ultra funky, and even resemble a polymeter.
For the sound design portion we explore the basics of wavetable synthesis and use Reason Studios drums to toughen up the beat.

"some people shame me for putting reverb but i don't care" best mentality for making music, make what you like no matter what you have to do to achieve it, LEGEND
Reverb on a highpassed mid range "bass" layer is a good technique for making bass sound bigger without messing up the actual low end.
Music making is a fluid creature and you have to be fluid as well. I don't know rules, because I'm the only one doing it in my area. Meaning I'm self taught. don't try to remember it all, only retain what matters to you. I will say the most important thing to know is your daw and how to fully utilize it. Short cut key commands and it's features. May save you from buying plugins you don't need and time.
@Christopher Bradley Yeah, i have always been thinking that some basic much music theory is more or less essential, but too much of it and you just end up with commercial mass produced crap. I like to experiment and see what happens when i try different things. Definitely not very professional, but i just want to have fun.
This being said, i still recommend checking out "The House Of Kush", who actually has some really good videos with all kinds of tips. Just a whole different level than other music channels. Almost get a little "high" from just watching him explain things, lol! Its a very "comfortable" experience 😅
Definitely, it sounded sick with reverb. Obviously the mixing stage low cutting the reverb would help but boxing ourselves in with “never use reverb on a bass” limits creativity IMO
JUST USE LAYERS end of discussion lol
The dotted bassline is like magic in terms of danceability. I think it applies to delay settings as well.
Exactly! I'm sure it's the reason that 3/16 is the default delay setting in most plugins.
I’m addicted to dotted 8th delays
@@OscarUnderdog good take!
@@the8bitdeity Same! Meris Polymoon dotted 8th notes are insanely fun
I love how you start off explaining a fairly simple principle then wind up making the bones of a cool track almost by accident, clearly explaining every step along the way.
Your lessons are some of the best that I have found in terms of clarity and delivery
“If it sounds tasty, it is tasty.” - Oscar, 2022
I love it.
This was exactly what I was wondering about after your previous bass video and now you've made it... and it is indeed magic!
They way you explain and structure your stuff is pretty perfect.
I love your channel. This is exactly the type of stuff I'm writing at the moment, and although a lot of this is elementary to me I'm still picking up a lot of subtle things I never realized before by watching your videos. Good stuff.
Reason + FL user here 👋. This is one of the best channels for learning various EDM production methods. Props to all the music producers out there learning and leveling up.
Reason user here too, I still have an unhealthy obsession with the malstrom. So maybe not leveling up 😅
Magical tutorial as usual. I love your delivery and that you are willing to try stuff out, even though you are showing us how to do it... Confidence in your craft!
You are such a great teacher. I will watch videos of yours even if I understand the topic already because you relate concepts in a very simple and engaging way.
I´ve been making music for almost ten years, got a few label releases out there already, but this guy still manages to teach me new stuff. Like adding Freq Delay on a bassline - so f*cking simple but effective, I never would have thought that myself! Thanks Oscar
Every producer, no matter how experienced, misses some tricks and techniques. That's why channels like this one are such a godsend. One could only dream of witnessing top tier producers' methodology in the 90s when I started dabbling, unless you had contacts in that world. I remember emailing with some producers for some tips and samples that were generous enough to share them, but there was nothing compared to the endless ocean of educational content we have these days. This generation is truly blessed in many ways.
@@renx81 Yeap... I gave it a go in the 90s as well but had no contacts either which resulted in highly UNsuccessful career as a producer...
Now I'm rediscovering my hobby thanks to the unlimited wealth of information on the topic... Have already taken some online courses and probably will purchase Oscar's as well. LIke his teaching style.
Your channel is so helpful! Thanks for all the insights so far
Perfect timing Oscar. You are a great man. Thanks !
Love this video and appreciate all the helpful tips along the way. Love your channel!
I love your workflow I learned so much from this video already
You are always great! Thanks Oscar! Your course is powerful at Electronic Music School! Appreciate it
I really like the way you explain everything, very thorough but easy to follow.
Just got into your channel, and I'm really connecting with your teaching style. Thank you for all your work !
I really like the reverb on the bass
actually, it's not reverb on a bass. It's reverb on high frequency part of a bass, so dunno what a reason for shaming.)
Another amazing video. Thanks again for making it. Love this channel
Thanks Oscar! Great technique and nice track 💜
Nice, love how it sounds! Thank you!
This was brilliant lesson dude. Nice pace, clear explanation and left me inspired to go do it. Thanks very much.

Amazing video mate!!
Omg this gives me highkey 2000s minimal vibes thats what got me into techno back then thanksssss!
with the deeper filter, the baseline startet to pressing on the speakers. Very well done. Have we been witness of a birth of a new track?^^
Thank you very much for your work, Oscar! Everything is very clear and accessible. I've been following your channel for about a month now. You have been a revelation to me. Thank you!
I know that you love techno music. But I would like to ask you if there is an opportunity to make some tutorials related to minimal music, namely the Romanian minimal? If it doesn't bother you.
Brilliant!
Great as always. Thank you Oscar.
This works. Recommended to try this out. Thanks a lot for your help
Great technique 🔊 thank you 🙏🏻
Best teacher ever
Awesome loop, feel like it could be made into a killer minimal 2000s inspired techno song. Love the style!

Awesome! Really got inspired now 😎
I like this track! Makes me wanna dance.
That track is fire.
amazing job
SUPER COOL!
Very informative - cheers! 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Very nice! Big Up!
Love it ... I have been saying to my Ableton student "please do not start with Wavetable ..." ans the Reverb on bass ... your answer is just perfect ... (bassline is not only sub frequencies) ... you are an inspiration on the friendly style of teaching electronic music production :)
Great stuff Oscar! Nothing wrong with verb on basses!
Maravilloso vídeo oscar, cada vez lo haces mejor, didáctico, simple y divertido, saludos desde valencia España
At first it sounded like most early 90s Eurodance hits a.la “Rhythm is a dancer” - love it :)
You are very amazing thx for Tutorials ive learned many ...thx...Greets from Hamburg
Great video!
Ha. I love how this popped up while I was chilling on the couch with my Minibrute2S on my lap, sequencing basslines.
Thank you Mr. BASSMAN 😊
I always enjoy and learn from your content Oscar.
Epic nails you got there! And obviously great video as always.
super interesting bass sound design
man, i discover your channel and you are great, thanks
honestly dotted everything sounds good
The moroder tutorial was great. I tried it on FL Studio Mobile. I love to relax with music.
Brilliant groove lesson. Wavetable synthesis and adjusting envelopes lfo's and the chord or note in sequence leads to great grooves. I'm curious if you can do a lesson that covers how to do the same with some of the modern keyboards like Yamaha ModX or older Roland Fantom G next for real time performance playing? I've seen some experts do it but none teach electronic music like you can. Thanks for the awesome lesson!
Very nice endresult!
Sir, you are a wizard. Thanks for putting this into my brain.
With every change to the bassline, I think "woah that's literally perfect", and then you add some more and I think "woooaaah that's even more perfect!"
Subbed immediately. Thanks man
love it!
English is my secondary language, and many times I don't understand what exactly people saying. but I uderstand every single of your words like a native... That's so interesting -> clear mind transfer. Wonderfull work Oscar - thanks that you are !
learn something everytime!!
Great stuff as always! Thanks for the ideas~
Also, love your nails!
❤️🙌
👍Really cool example UD Oscar great teach without a shadow of a doubt, TNX to you, greetings from Italy 😊👌
Over the ears of learning I realized that there's only so much you can learn about producing through watching videos only. The real teaching moment I guess would be to sit with you Oscar, and try building a track :D I think that would be the best possible thing that could happen to me
I always love a dotted rhythm, insanely groovy! I also usually do two basses, a subby one and a low-mid ish one that has reverb on it, who shames reverb on bass though??????
btw it was nice running into you on Saturday at VK!
great. Good explanation. Tough!
very nice!
nice man! subbed
This was so helpful! I use Logic but still super applicable 🙏🏾🔥
Booka Shade vibes coming through on this example track
If it sounds tasty, it is tasty. That bassline is delicious! Great video!
