We are just finishing up our barley harvest, so I thought that I would share a couple of extra videos. Barley fields require a lot of extra care because barley ignites really easily. My dad had to pull his combine out of the field because he saw smoke. The views of our Montana fields are beautiful. You will get to see me drive the combine down the gravel road and miss the road signs. We have to cut the fields in sections so that if there is a fire we can get out safely and our combines don't catch fire. I hope you enjoy this bonus video.

My Story... Hello. My name is Kate Stephens and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was 2 years old. Until recently the wheat we grow has been taller than me. My grandfather is 93 and he is the best mentor ever. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm and I decided that the amazing photos I take at harvest of our wheat and barley could make fabulous, exciting designs for fashion and accessories. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my handbag as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Hi Kate, my grandfather homesteaded 80 acres in Freanh River Minnesota and was a farmer with a team of horses.. I live about 4 miles from where that is. The only crop I have on my property is trees and we had them harvested 4 years ago. Now I have towate 30 to 40 years to havest again. My grandfather cme from Sweden. You are getting a great education from your elders. Keep up the great work!

Thank you for your great comment. We really worry about fires in the field. We have very dry conditions and high winds, so fire can spread miles really fast.

I did play softball for a while, but alpine skiing was my passion until I broke both my legs in dryland training just before going to train with a Canadian team in Switzerland. The Olympics were my goal but I had to let that go and that was really hard. Positive thinking got me through the hard times when I couldn't walk. I am very grateful for everyday. I think that having a positive attitude cheers me up and also is nice to help other people. I think that negative people are not very nice to be around. I try really hard to have fun and be thankful. That spiral on the comb is nice and shiny Kate, Your a good operator picking up those skips. Harvesting without auto steer is real harvesting. Keeping the comb full and not missing any is a real challenge hour after hour. Well done young lady.

It’s obviously harvest season which makes filming a UA-cam video pretty straight forward and fairly easy. Just keep in mind ideas about what you might film after harvest. Because I really enjoy how you explain things. A lot of farmers don’t explain so well because they don’t want to bore us. But since I’m not a farmer I find the details fascinating! Barley is used here in England for ‘Rich Tea’ biscuits and of course for brewing beer! Keep up the good work - you are doing a very important job.

This is the best recipe I could find - it uses Barley Malt Syrup, which I believe is barley malt boiled down to a syrup, and this gives the biscuits their great flavour. I think you can substitute butter for the oil and margarine too if you’re not vegan.

I am so glad you shared the link for the recipe. My Great Grandma on my mom's side is from Wales and she is 99. She used to make a cake called "Dad's Cake" with currents and she made tea biscuits too. My mom and I will try to find the barley syrup and make these and report back. They sound delicious!!! Some parts of the southern States they will get two harvests in a single year. Western Kentucky for example, if they seeded winter wheat the previous year they can pull that wheat off early in the year and still have enough of a growing season to plant and harvest soybeans (called double-crop soybeans) and then rotate with single crop corn the following year, then wheat-soybeans again, etc. I learned that studying agronomy in University of Alberta. Can't do that where you and I farm though, not a long enough growing season, so we split it with cattle as it sounds like your uncle does as well.

I have 8 grandchildren and I was shocked about 2 years ago when they did NOT understand (or believe me) that their favorite fast food (French fries) came from the potatoes we were buying. I had to “prove” to them by making some home fries 😂 love you, can’t wait to watch more of your videos :)

Hi Kate you really have ideal conditions for harvesting. much better for you. here in France 🇫🇷 the ground is wet but we have to go there anyway because rain is forecast for the days to come !!!! there is sunflower 🌻 soybeans and corn 🌽 left to harvest. the situation is complicated and the dryers will be running at full speed. it is magnificent these three threshers that harvest one after the other. i hope your 9610 is working properly and all is well for you. thank you for this wonderful video, take good care of yourself and your family. A guy on another YT channel was roading a corn header, hit a dip, caught the header that rolled up underneath the combine and stopped so hard the operator was ejected through the windshield onto the ground in front of the combine which stopped just in time. Wear your seat belt. Be safe. He only had moderate injuries.

They are a Christian family in Tennessee. You do a great job explaining things Kate. Keep up the great work. Liked seeing all 3 combines running together.
I saw that too Charles, the guy was incredibly lucky. Driving over the top of a header in itself would have been a rough ride and then to be thrown through the windscreen like that would not be nice. I see in a later video that he admitted to it being his own fault for not having the head attached the header properly but after seeing what happened I would for sure wear a seat belt when traveling at speed.

Hello from Germany! I grew up on a farm in Germany. When I was 16 I had to drive a combine harvester myself. Because the driver broke both legs while getting off the combine harvester in the evening. That was in the late 1980s. The combine was brand new at the time. It had a working width of 4.50 m and was from the Fahr company. The funny thing was that the day the driver let me drive to show me. I was interested in it. From the next day on I was alone with the machine, among other things threshing the fields for other farms. You can imagine that unfortunately not everything went smoothly! Stones in the threshing mechanism, a false field started, wheat mixed with oats once. Thank god no accident on the road! That was my last complete harvest season back then. Then I started training as a paper maker. However, I haven't been working on the job for a long time. In the meantime I have been driving trucks for 27 years, in international long-distance transport, and I have been working as a jumper in a quarry for 2 years. Springer is someone who is deployed on several jobs if someone is down.
With you everything is much, much bigger than it was in Germany at the time. Unfortunately, the farm no longer exists. The farmer, a good friend of my family, had to close down for reasons of age. His children didn't want the farm and I should have invested too much money. Unfortunately that didn't work. I really enjoy watching you at work! I would love to come to you to really experience it! You won a big fan in Germany! Me. I am now 48 years old and watch your videos. Really great how well you can handle the big machine. I am really impressed!
