- Winter Fun! Grain Hauling in Montana
In this week's video, I show you the process of hauling winter wheat on our century Montana farm in the snow. You will learn how the GrainVac VRX takes the wheat out of the grain bin and into the semi-truck in 10 minutes. I also show you a tractor cab tour of the tractor running the GrainVac. You will meet Steve and Eric Wahl who have a grain hauling business and are hauling wheat for my Dad in this video. You will also get to meet our truck driver Darcy. I take a ride with Steve Wahl in his awesome truck. It is winter in Montana and you can see snow on the ground. It is also very muddy out and we might have to stop early to keep the trucks from getting stuck. I take you to one of our fields where we have winter wheat growing. I explain that winter wheat has to freeze in order to produce the head at the top with the kernels in it. The variety of wheat we planted in the field I show you is Warhorse. Warhorse has fantastic baking qualities. I also include drone footage in the video to give you an overview perspective on how the operation works. I hope you learned a little more about hauling wheat and a typical day on the farm. Enjoy the video!

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Hi Kate, I bet your Parents are so happy having you around .you can really give so much information. The Machinery alone must have taken a while to learn, your Dad and Granpa have taught you well. Thanks again for sharing. Have an incredible weekend.. Be Safe,, cover those ears.. yours not the corn on the cob. Thanks again..

Great video Kate
Thank you so much for your kindness!
Great to see you educating and trying to bridge that gap. It's sorely needed in these times, and especially when it is done with a smile and heart.
Greetings from northern Germany! (only a short car drive from the Danish border)
Hello from Montana! Thank you so much for your kindness. I would love to see the farms in Germany. I understand they are beautiful.
Mr.wayne ànderson gray
Kate I have been looking at your past comments and you don't have a single thumbs down on your beautiful videos.
Girl that tells me that you are putting some of the very best farming videos on you tube. From Budd R Hicks in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I use to work on a farm years ago. I have also ran a 2500 acrer farm all by myself. The owner just wrote the paycheck and pay the bill that it cost to run a farm.
Thank you.
Yet another very informational video Kate, Loved IT GREAT JOB, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you. I really appreciate your kind and encouraging words!!
Bless your heart, sweet girl! Never change, you will go far.
Thank you so much!! I appreciate your kind words and super great encouragement!
Amen, how are you mike
In general I like seeing the machinery in action, so like the views out the front window of the combines, or the back of the tractor pulling the harrow (first time I've heard that term or seen one since I was your age). As for the drone, as a "drone" (quadcopter) pilot, builder, and designer myself, I mostly like to see the overview shots, so like the shots in this video showing the truck, the bin, and you guys all in one shot, but also the views of the truck being filled, things we wouldn't normally be able to see. Also drone shots from like above and behind a combine or other equipment as you're planting/spraying/harvesting/etc.
Keep up the videos. Glad to see that at least some of your generation recognize the gaps in education and even happier to see someone actually trying to do something about it.
Thank you so much for your great story and amazing kindness!!! I appreciate your great encouragement! You made my day!
Kate girl you mean that you can fill a/1200 bushel trailer truck in just 10 minutes. Girl the tastes we could fill a trailer truck was 20 minutes. That machine must be one awesome fast unloader I have ever heard of. Plus I am still glad that you are not getting any thumbs down on your beautiful videos. Cause girl you are putting some of the best farming videos on You Tube . From Budd R Hicks in Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Thank you for your kind words.

FYI...Warhorse is a solid-stemmed hard red winter wheat and was developed by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and released to seed growers in 2013. It is an awned, white-glumed, semidwarf (Rht1) wheat with medium maturity. It performs well in locations where sawfly cutting has occurred. It has average test weight and protein, and below average winter hardiness. Loyal fan! Adore your youtubes.
Thank you so much for the information. Yes, however the Saw Flies are destroying our War Horse wheat too. They are working on different breeding now too. Thank you for your kindness!!!!!!!!!!
I grew up on a grain farm in North Dakota. The farm is still in the family. So happy and proud to see a young person with so much passion to explain to the public where their food comes from. Keep up your great work!

The drone footage is a nice addition to your video Kate. It gives a perspective that is not easy to visualize otherwise. Your dad is pretty good at flying that. It is always interesting to hear from everyone involved in the farming chain there and to see how the wheat gets handled and moved around.
Hi Mr. Kapp, thank you for your kind words. My dad loves that drone! I am glad you enjoyed my video.
@@KatesAg I had a very inexpensive small drone. The first time I flew it , it went up and up and away and I never saw it again ! Sad - but it was only $25. I have another one that I am going to practice carefully with before I get it too high !
Oh my goodness that is hilarious!! I'm sure it was not funny but they way you wrote it is hilarious! Thank you so much.
@@KatesAg Kate - here is the first and last video from it ( it sent it to my android phone via wifi) . I thought my friends kids would want to see the drone so I took it to their house. It was late afternoon and also was a bad spot since their neighbors had fences, big trees, and other surrounding ground was corn stubble. Next time I fly here on my own property where I can at least go look for it ! here is the video from it ua-cam.com/video/3ctZWyb7iHI/v-deo.html
It took some really great video of views before it went missing! Thank you for the link. I bet the kids thought is was pretty neat.
hi..hii..good job sister..winter's cool! Grain transportation in Montana,
I hope you will always be happy and all your activities will be facilitated
Thank you so much for your kind comment.
It's incredible that you live next to a missile base, because so did we when I grew up on our farm. They would occasionally sound the alarm and do drills, and we could hear it from our house. That was in the 1950s. I am surprised to see the same thing around today in your state. That is some great drone work you have going on in this video.
Thank you so much for your kindness. That is really interesting because I thought that the missiles were only in our area.
Wow, such harsh weather conditions!
Thank you for your comment. Our weather is a bit crazy in Montana. Generally the fall is pretty mild. Last year and this year we have had record early snowfall and it has been quite a challenge. We have warmed up to the 60's F now and all the snow is melting and the winds will dry the mud up soon I hope.
nice to know about winter wheat and how it has to freeze to grow
Thank you so much for your comment. I am so glad that you enjoyed my video and the info.
Hi Kates Ag - Farm to Fashion, Great video you have produced here, I really enjoyed it, great content. I particularly enjoyed the part at 0:18 explaing the grain vac and how to empty the grain bin. You got some nice machines on the farm. I felt it was really informative and you really brought the point across well. I liked how the PTO was explained in 2:20. Good to see women getting into the front end of farming and amazed with the enthusiasm you throw yourself in with every task. I am really interested in engineering and have had a career in engineering for over 28 years from everything from starting as a mechanics assistant to now a Project Manager. I was raised and grew up on a farm in the UK. I enjoy sharing my skills and knowledge as well with others like yourself so looking at starting my own tube you channel looking at machine engineering. I have provided training to others and had apprentices/ young persons work with me to kick start their careers. Many thanks, Great job
Thank you so much for your kindness and encouragement. I really appreciate it. Your story is very interesting and I bet you get to see a lot of fascinating things as an engineer. Machine engineering should do well on UA-cam too!
@@KatesAg hope your channel goes strenght to strenght
Hi Kate. Hope you are fine. But I think I see a reď tractor there by the grain ben..but that's ok I like all kinds. I grew up on John deere 2cylinders so they are my favorite. Hope your crops turned out great and you've got it all in. I still love your viďeo,s. Watch them alot. Well bye kate you take care, ok 5:29
Wow great video, drone footage is always good, gives us a way better overview over the area ... 👍 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging comment. My dad figured out how to work the drone and I figured out how to get it into my video. It really was a big learning curve. lol

We are a couple of hours south of the Hi-line. It is beautiful though.
@@KatesAg Born in Glasgow. Graduated from Scobey. Fortunate enough to get up there twice this year. I enjoy getting out of the city.
Wow that is really neat and what a small world. Thank you for sharing that.
Very interesting!
Thank you so much for your great comment. I am so glad you liked my video!!!
Your a great interviewer 🤗
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that.
Another great video Kate. Please tell your dad he did a great job too. Its hard to say what we would like to see footage of from the drone you see, it's all in the eye of the beholder to put it simple. The best shots come from just flying it. like if you were to fly it out into the field and find some wildlife or to get the tractors out working and catching the sunset in the background. you never know what your going to get until you just fly it. But i will say that now you have a drone on the farm, you will find it is a good tool to have when you need to check the fields, with out running over any of the crop to look at them. But if i was going too pick some shots it would be a few flyby's over the fields over the next season and show the progress of the wheat as it grows up until it's time to harvest. High and Low flyby's of the field should really look nice and tell a good story too as it grows. Thank you for the video and see you next week.
Thank you so much for the wonderful suggestions and kind words. You have a great idea and I agree that the drone footage of the wheat growing will be really great to see too!!! I appreciate your encouragement!!!
You look amazing
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Kate , You are so thorough with your videos. You don’t miss much. Your area is called the golden triangle I assume it is because it is a heavy wheat producing area. I thought you all were John Deere people. What’s with the Massey Ferguson Lol. If you don’t mind me asking Do you have any brothers or sisters involved with the farm . Have a great week and be safe🙂
LOL. Thank you for your comment. Yes we are John Deere people. The red tractor has a PTO and that is why we use it. I don't know why we don't have a green one though! lol The Golden Triangle of Montana is a famous hard winter wheat growing area. We produce some of the highest protein wheat anywhere. I have a lot of family that are involved in the farm too. Thank you for your kind words.
I used to see the grain silos being filled all the time across the street from my apartment. After 120 years they have been torn down.
Oh no that is so sad! I really appreciate you sharing the story.
Good information Kate....👌👍
Slowly your camera work is improving..👌👍
Thank you. I appreciate your kind words and compliment.
Hi Kate. Can you explain how you and your family are paid for the grains you produce? On your "Winter fun..." video you indicated that you needed to get your wheat from your storage bins to the elevator for sales. So Mr. Wahl was trucking the wheat you harvested to the elevator. Does the elevator belong to some wholesaler who buy harvested wheat directly from the farmers? How does the wholesaler get the wheat to buyers? Is it transported by train? How is your grain shipped to the buyer? Once the wholesaler sells your grain to a buyer, like a wheat milling company, then the wholesaler pay you for your wheat at a predetermined price, and the wholesaler would just keep a mark up percentage for the sale. Thank you for your great videos. They are very informative.
Thank you so much for your terrific questions. In part 2 of this video you will see that we go to the elevator and I explain all the questions you have. The elevator takes grain from the area and we even saw a Welkers semi truck there too. The elevator then ships the grain by rail. Stay tuned for the rest of the story coming up. Thank you so much for your super kind words. I really appreciate them.
Hi good video, the drone footage was a good idea. Learn with your dad there are great intelligent flight modes with that dron, fly away, circle and other that will make your video better. Short interview with other people are entretainig as well, thumbs UP for U.
Greetings
Thank you so much for your very kind and encouraging words. I appreciate your great suggestions too.
Just put a tarp there by the door is what I use. It make it easy to clean up and waste nothing. It will pay for itself in no time. U have lots of bins.
Thank you for your great suggestion. We try not to waste anything and we also know that the antelope and other wildlife will clean it up. They need some extra meals when it snows early. I think the grizzly bears are hibernating now or they might like it too. That is the only scary part.
The pheasants can eat the wheat too
Yes the pheasants love the wheat!! We feed people and wildlife!! Thank you for your comment.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for your kind emojis!
This is not Red Russia? I remember growing up and seeing red Russian wheat. The ladies at the church used to make beautiful crosses with red Russian wheat. Great video and God bless you all.
Thank you for your kindness and great question. The hard red winter wheat is Warhorse that we planted. It is a variety that grows well here with our difficult weather and low moisture. I have heard of crosses being made with red wheat. I would love to see them.
You go beautiful girl because you can do it
Thank you so much for your great and kind words.
What’s milo used for. I’ve heard people talk about it. Nice video. Andy drone footage is good. Glad your dad likes it
Milo is also called sorghum. It is drought tolerate so it grows in Montana. We don't get a lot of moisture here. Sorghum is mostly used for cattle and hog feed. I am glad you liked the drone footage. My dad loves flying that drone. He also has a plane he flies but he is really captivated by the video the drone can take.
