Super helpful tips Joanie. I do all of this except the sketching. I just set up the scene before cooking and click a few shots just to see if I can translate the idea I have in my head to screen. Studying other photographer's images, especially when you are going to shoot a dish you have never tried before or a dish from another cuisine, is really helpful.
A motto that I love for growth is Imitate, Assimilate, Innovate. Trying to recreate a scene that you love helps you understand the nuances behind it, which helps you innovate and create in the future. Great video and great content that's getting better all the time, Thank you Joanie!
I JUST started watching your videos and subscribed, but you definitely SOUND like you’re from Chicago. The videos are great, I’m picking up tips, and appreciate your instruction. The back story from one of the other videos also intrigues me, and sounds like there was previous experience in restaurant POS - a combination of food and technology. Keep the videos coming, and kudos to you for making the jump!
I take a few shots before placing the food into the plate or the drink into the cup. Even though being with empty cups and plates it gives me an idea about the light and the shadows or the placing.
Hi Joanie. When I get ready to do a shoot, I don't sketch the layout. I setup the background, lights (if needed) and everything else first. I might use a tennis ball in place of Ice Cream or small balls to represent Truffles. I can check the lighting and composition and when all are the way I want it, I exchange for the real food. For me this works great and saves a lot of time when messing with things that may melt.
Hey Joanie... Great video as usual. You're like a teacher I had too long ago... every time I saw him, I learned something. Thank you for your time and efforts and take care.
Love the “cinematography” edge of this video!!! Putting the gimbal to work!! Also, I’m a big fan of “Steal Like An Artist” book... it’s a must read book for all creatives 🤪
Fantastic video, great tips, and I love your dedication and attention to detail. Your casserole looked so yummy and I love that you did it on the parchment in the cast iron pan. Knowing you, I'm sure your deep dish pizza was better than anything I'd find in Chicago. I had deep dish at Lou Malnatti's, which is supposed to be famous for their sausage... and it disappointed.
Great tips! And also: I love the addition of B-roll with your new cam ;) makes it look great and interesting and super personal -- not just a list of things you might want to try :D
Great video, as always :) I have the same sort of process. For clients I usually do a mood board and a shot list as well. I do find that I kinda go around in circles a little bit with looking for inspiration on IG and Pinterest, so I will hit the library tomorrow to pick up some magazines, great tip, thanks Joanie!
Great tips! I especially like the sketching out the scene idea - I've never tried doing this but I want to try it out now - usually I just go with the flow and do everything on the spot but I believe it can't hurt to put some more thought into it (since now most of my thought goes to the actual cooking and recipe development haha!) :)
I know exactly what you mean, I’ve been a chef for 25 years and i find it hard to switch from recipe development to food photography lot of fun though.
If you are in the UK, get a Waitrose loyalty card. Then you can get their monthly food magazine (in store) for free (normally £3.00) which can have some great photos on pretty high quality paper.
I like to set up the scene without the food and take a few shots to see if it works. Sometimes I'll even use some kind of replacement food that has the same colors.
Doing the 'homework" I do it too when doing documentary or editiorial work, which I'm getting back into. Deep dish is good, I'm more of thin and crispy pizza type. Cheers.
Pretty much everything here on UA-cam I've prepared myself. But, for clients, it all depends. Depends on the project, budget, expectations and use of the images.
I have a lot of food brand clients who are not located where I am. Quite a few in California. They ship me product, we work together to plan the shoot and then depending on the budget and scope of the project I prepare the food or work with a food stylist. So, all depends on the client, the scope and the image usage.
I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 and I am trying to find someone that can help me learn how to use the camera professionally. If anyone has any advice I greatly appreciate it.

I like to set up the scene without the food and take a few shots to see if it works. Sometimes I'll even use some kind of replacement food that has the same colors.

Hey Joannie, really good advice here, how about something similar on photographing red food? Strawberries and stuff and how to make it look real?
I like to do a Google image search for inspiration.
so good the quote :) hahha
One of the best part of my day: to hear 'What's shakin' bacon' (is it correct?)
Who eats the food you photograph? it looks delicious
¡ME ENCANTA! I love you!!!
So glad that I found your channel! I sent you a message on IG by the way.
Hi, I've just wondered if it is possible to make gluten free pizza with KA Artisan? Without eggs... Tried?
I need to let you know that I never have the heart to skip your intro bc I don’t want to miss you saying “what’s shakin bacon” 😂
Hey Joanie! What was the solution you used to make “water” beads to form on vegetables and other foodstuffs?
Coffee House Media I hope Joanie won’t mind me jumping in here ;) I use a 50/50 mix of water and glycerin and put it in a mister spray bottle!
Great ..
How similar is the composition in your original sketch to that of your final photo?
Do you cook most of the food you photograph?
Pretty much everything here on UA-cam I've prepared myself. But, for clients, it all depends. Depends on the project, budget, expectations and use of the images.
'stunt double' -LOL....
I love pizza so much kkkk
If working for a client, why not have them prepare the food? Either at their place or yours.
I have a lot of food brand clients who are not located where I am. Quite a few in California. You tube has plenty of tutorial videos.
you should see my sketches Joanie 😂
Hehe, first again :3
