Thank you for showing us how to make chalk paste. I can't afford Chalk Couture either. Especially when you have your project all planned out in your head and you do not have all the colors you need.
So, a year later, and this video is still helping. When I find expensive products being recommended, my first step is to search for diy's of them. Thanks so much for this one.
This was extremely helpful since I was shopping for chalk paste recently. I wanted to buy a few different colors but the cost would be astronomical. Your amazing video was just the best remedy! TYFS your time and knowledge with helping others to have fun crafting without going broke. You made a subscriber out of me.
I was actually searching for chalk paste videos for pica related purposes but I enjoyed this diy tutorial bc I just purchased a journal from Target yesterday that I'll be working on at a planner meet up I'm attending today.
I have seen them use plaster of Paris and baking soda. But the talc powder one is my favorite. The colors are so much brighter with the talc compared to the others. I appreciate this video. I needed to make paste so I found your video. You were very thorough on the directions.
Thank you so much for sharing ❤ with us! Chalk Couture is extremely high in my opinion. I absolutely love all their products and would buy from them if their products were wallet friendly. I just can't justify taking that much from the family in hopes that I might be able to make some of it back someday. I truly appreciate you 💓
I like chalk couture too, and I'm so glad that you came across my video! I really hope it helps you out, that's why I love doing these types of videos. Thank you so much for watching!
Ditto here. I've been seeing Chalk Couture videos and checked their prices. YIKES. They're also an MLM. YIKES ON TRIKES. Nope nope nope nope. However, I like the look, and I have some mdf board that I've painted with black chalkboard paint. This video is a great alternative.
Thank you for sharing this! I just learned about Chalk Couture and thought it was kind of pricey. I'm so glad I found this video with a great alternative.
Thank you Melissa! I too cant afford chalk couture! So i love that u did this video. You really cant tell the difference between store bought vs. Hand made.
I wish I had your CVS! I had everything else and I ran to CVS and all their talcs are 5 or more. Except the tiny one is 3.00. I showed them the picture of your bottle and they said they never heard of that kind. It must be where I live. But I cant wait to try this. Thank you!
That's strange. I've been to a few different CVS in Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana and they all have a version of the small Dollar section and that's where they have it. It may be a different brand but they've all had them. Hopefully you can find some. Thanks for watching
It’s probably Texas. I haven’t had good experiences since I moved here. I’m from Ohio. Thanks anyway. I’ve been doing research and I think I’m gonna use the one that says baby powder cornstarch.
This video is so helpful! I'm definitely going to try and make some chalk paste. Quick question, can you wash/wipe this paste off your materials like you can with CC? Ie, if you wanted to reuse that chalkboard for another design? Thank you!
Can you re-sticky the stencil with some Pixie Spray or Aleene's Tack It Over and Over? I'm interested in doing this, but I don't have any self-adhesive stencils. Wondering if it could work on a regular plastic stencil if I use one of those products.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Am just getting interested in this technique and, like everyone else, find CC so expensive. This is a great alternative. I have 2 questions---Would Calcium Carbonate work as well as the baby powder? It is another way to make chalk paint, so I'm just wondering if I make it thicker if it would be the same. Second, you mention a longer drying time than the "real" paste. Is it significantly longer? Thanks so much!
I think if you adjust the texture and "pastiness" using the calcium carbonate that it would work. I have used it to make chalk paint but didn't think to use it for this. It wasn't a significant difference as far as the drying time, but it did take a bit longer. That's really more in terms of it curing. I hope that helps.
What a great alternative to the expensive chalk paste! I have all of these ingredients on hand and could totally make my own. TYFS! Do you think a silicone face mask applicator would work in lieu of the squeegees?
Funny you mention the applicator. I thought about that after I recorded. I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as it's flat. Thanks for watching let me know if you try it
I haven't had any deterioration or damage to my stencils/transfers thus far and I've used this for quite some time. But to each his own. I found an alternative that has worked for me and shared it.
I've never used it on anything other than chalkboard and DT signs, but there's no way that I can think to make it dishwasher safe other than the dishwasher safe mod podge but that may smear it on that material.
Very interesting, I don't know about the paste. Hope you don't mind a couple of questions. Lol Why would I want to use it rather than regular paint? And did I understand correctly that the alcohol/sanitizer helped keep the paint color true?
No problem. Since the paste is thicker it works much better with the screen stencil. Less bleeding. Yes when you use the alcohol the color is brighter. I can't explain why for that one, just something i noticed from making it over time. Maybe it's something like how vinegar keeps clothes brighter when added to the wash?? Hope that helps
@@MelissaMakesItDIY thank you so much for answering and explaining. So one more question, the paste is only used on "screen" stencils, what is a screen stencils?
@@MelissaMakesItDIY Thank you Melissa for being kind answering my questions. I'll look more into these products. I don't have good luck with paint and stencils, tried everyone's suggestions and I'm just not good at it lol
@@micheleharley9887 lol this paste or any paste you choose and the screen stencils make for almost no error use. It's easy and works every time I've used it unless I make a bad batch lol let me know if you try it out and how it works for you. Thanks for watching!
@@MelissaMakesItDIY is it okay to let the paste dry to the screen? I was wondering if it was different with the homemade paste. I was told not to let it dry on the screen with chalk couture paste.
I would wash it off as soon as possible. It washes off fairly easily. It will stain the screen and could potentially get stuck in the screen if you leave it too long.
Now, if someone can just come up with a cheaper veraion of the stencils. I am not into farmhouse, and that seems to be what they have the most of, for stencils. I suppose you could use a regular stencil, if your careful.

Yes, the dollar aisle in the CVS is the only place I can find the talc powder, I have been telling everyone, and it smells amazing, too!
I just bought it today!

I've seen people use regular stencils with paste, I've never done it. Screen stencils have a thin mesh on the parts that are cut out of the stencil

What could type of towel be used in place of the fuzzy towel for the stencils
I'm not really sure. I never use a towel

Thanks for watching, You want to use silkscreen stencils. You can find them at Michaels and Hobby Lobby

After project is finish can
A coat of urethane be put over dried design?
I've never tried it before. I'm going to assume that it'll wipe off even after dry. Maybe do a test piece. Sorry I couldn't be more help
Can you use this with stencils you make with a Cricut?
Yes you can. I've done it a few times. Thanks for watching!
Melissa I’m having a hard time find the powder
Lisa, the only place I've been able to find it is my local CVS in their little "dollar" section.
How long can the chalk paste last when stored?
Tfs, not able to afford there stencils, can they be used on other stencils?
Yes, but you don't smear, you dab it on like regular paint. You just have to tape the stencil down so there's minimal bleed through
Why do you need the alcohol, or hand sanitizer? Is that so it keeps longer, or something??
Both to preserve and to make it "pasty"
Would these work on glass as well?
I haven't tried it, but I don't see why not
Calcium Carbonate, (POP)Plaster Of Paris ❤
Can this be permanent if you bake your cup?
I'm not sure, I've never tried. Thanks for watching!
