Reading, Pennsylvania's Rivers Of Nihil have never fit neatly into a box, but with 2018's Where Owls Know My Name, they transcended all labels applied to them. Returning in 2021 with The Work, they have forged further into new territory, delivering an album that is as cerebral as it is visceral, and that covers a staggering sonic range, definitively placing them in a category of their own. LYRICS:
Music: Uttley
Lyrics: Biggs
I want your money, your time.
I want your patience and your pride
I’m a restless innovator
And I’m working over time
So Heaven help me
(heaven help me)
And the dollar defend me
(dollar defend me)
There is nothing you can sell me
that I ain’t got now
I can still do the work
But it gets harder, I can tell ‘ya
It ain’t perfect but it’s what we got
Is it enough for you?
Now I live among this filth
And I’m richer for it still
The rushing
And reeling
But now she’s coming home to me
The rushing
And reeling
And she’ll be perfect and so clean
Reveling
In this filth
This stain
Reveling
In this filth
Circle the drain
Circling
Heaven help
Clean this mess
Heaven help
We’ll never be clean again
Cold
A constant- steady breath
Clean- ‘til there’s nothing left
In sorrow
And shame
I whisper out a name
This anger makes it’s claim
We’ll never be clean again
Yeah we’ll never be clean
Yeah we’ll never be clean again
The rushing
And reeling
She can’t believe this feeling
We’re weightless
And tasteless
This god’s not what she made us
But now she’s coming home to me
And she’ll be perfect and so clean
Reveling
In this filth
This stain
Reveling
In this filth
Circle the drain
Circling
Heaven help
Clean this mess

We’ll never be clean again

what's it about...?
Modern capitalism and wage slavery?
I’d be shocked if this song isn’t at least partly about heroin.
Jake: "I want your money"
Me: "understandable, have a nice day"
Then repress Owls! Haha

Hey Dean you gonna have a guest Shindig solo on it right? Be cool if ya did . You know what I'm saying . Lol .
When’s the new Archspire album coming out?

I love how the 4 albums are still in chronological order when in alphabetical order. I can just hit "play all" on my iPod and listen to the entire cycle seamlessly since the albums are arranged alphabetically

I was doing the dishes while listening to this song, now it is so clean there is no more dishes.
The synths in this song are so tastefully done.
This is not just music. It feels like a message straight from the engine of our universe. I listened to the guys a bit last year during my multiple solitary bike trips and I'm definitely gonna do that this year too.
no it's not a message from our universe haha, it is an amazing song
tho
love how the vocals are being distributed by the three of you. the pink floyd vibes in the middle are super, super sick. you guys look HEALTHY. great stuff. looking forward to the rest!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The three part harmony, the Moog giving the Pink Floyd feeling and the patterns, progressions tempo and timing changes is all just phenomenal.

I absolutely love the callback to The Silent Life - "it seems my work is never truly done." But work gets harder. ☠
daaaang, more Prog, less Tech, def. sounds like Rivers of Nihil but not like Owls part 2. Really stoked for the new album.
I'm getting some strong Black Crown Initiate vibes from this. (its not a bad thing at all lol, that first lp is sick)
It gets even better >:)
it's just one song.. and within it, they're are some nasty djunt gunts.

Aug 17, 2019, Lubbock Texas. Tombs came too town with a few other bands. I only wanted to see Tombs. Rivers of Nihil opened. Out of respect for the other bands, I show on time just as they have. It’s myself and a few others up front. Nihil comes on, blows my mind. Zoned out and in that odd trance state for a vast amount of the set I think. Always be at the show on time, you never know. I have been a fan since that show. Even got a fist bump.
110%. That's how I discovered Baroness, opening for Opeth.
Same. I don't even remember which band I originally went for. Rivers stole the fucking show

This song is very well written. They understand how important making a song breath is. Also that guitar solo is sick. Can I just say thank you for not becoming a gimmicky band and putting the sax in everything. The Synth gave me some Opeth and Cynic Vibes”
True but don’t get them wrong, there’ll be some sax this album😈
@@jctheii Is that confirmed somewhere? The only thing I heard is that they were ditching sax altogether, but I don't remember where I heard that.

Insanely talented bunch of dudes. Super nice too. Since somehow owls didn't blow them into the stratosphere despite being the masterpiece that it is, this album has to be the one. They deserve it.
Edit: this track is fucking amazing.
@@patrickburton1401 I know I’ve been at least one of those million lol
I think Owls put them in a really great place. They went from being a solid tech death band to flourishing into a genre breaking progressive death powerhouse. And the tours they’ve gotten since show they’re being respected. But unfortunately, being labelled any kind of death metal really limits your reach outside of the metal community. Owls really put their name on the map and hopefully The Work shows they can continue and grow the success (I know they can).
Be'Lakor is basically hitting the same vibes without the coreish elements.
In the grand scheme of things, they became *the* name in metal over the course of a month following the release of Owls, among old school and new schools fans alike. I highly doubt there's a metal band that will ever achieve "mainstream" notoriety just because of how polarizing of a genre/sound it is, but they got as close as anyone else IMO.
@@RustyGonzo lol Ever hear of Cannibal Corpse, dipshit? They've sold numbers Rivers will never, ever touch
Owls was a total masterpiece, and this has somehow the same feeling yet different. Maybe what I mean about it having the same feeling is that it irradiates the same magic, a part nostalgic part enticing feeling, it's like an unknown that is soo familiar. I never experienced something like this before with any other band. I need this album in my life.
where owls know my name was epic, this album blows, it's like blink 182 didn't get what they wanted for Christmas and want to show how mad they are about it.
I'm gonna sit and wait here for 4 days straight.
Bro Inferi and RoN coming out with new albums in the next few months let's fucking go
@Diego Ignacio Solares Flores Séptimo E I'm excited to see what first fragment can do with Dominic Lapointe
@Diego Ignacio Solares Flores Séptimo E Allegaeon and Archspire
And Be'lakor is in the studio for their fifth album and I'm neurotically shaking in anticipation of that.
@@xenogorwraithblade2538 I think Ne Obliviscaris is releasing another album soon too
@@Glhggthgr Please. Stop. I can only get so erect.
How is this not swimming in views by now?! Damn, there are a lot of people missing out on this one.
This is my most anticipated album of the year alongside Alluvial's Sarcoma and Interloper's Search Party. This will also be my first RoN album I will have known of before it's release, since I discovered the band a few months after WOKMN was released. So excited for this!!!!!!!! :D

Same, but I'm also equally anticipating Sleep Token, Spiritbox and Linga Ignota albums. Got a feeling one of them will be my album of the year.
Sarcoma is so good

Same my man, can't wait for this!

Up you go nick
I think you comment this on every video
The Pink Floyd influence is all over this song and I'm here for it. I love the use of synthesizers.
Yeah if it works, didn't in this case.
I'm with the consensus: if the rest of the album is as solid as this track, this ought to be what propels them to the top-tier of the metal world.
Looking for another full album tour. You really shouldn't be opening for anyone.
They're too perfect to be opening for anyone.
they are a perfect band to open for gojira, they would gain a lot of fans out of it
Rivers: “Who should we open for?”
Fans: “My friends...you open for no one.”
@@zemaneiro292 No offense, but that band has nothing on Rivers Of Nihil. Not gonna lie, they only have like a couple good songs and that's it. While I can sit through an entire album of Rivers Of Nihil.
They open for no one.
@@eggpod4567 the point I think is, is that gojira is massive and the closest mainstream band that rivers could attach to that would expand their reach. Gojira really is just a modern Metallica, nothing truly special, but nothing offensive either.
Hope to hear more vocal harmonizing with the drummer throughout the album that sounded awesome
Yes.
The Atmospheric Gamma of this is simply GENIUS.
Rivers never disappoints one single bit.
I'm not even half through the song and I'm already dying to hear the rest of this album. I play the living shit out of the last album and I just have this gut feeling that I'll be doing the same with this one.
I'm really glad I found this band. It was weirdly through Sheet Happens and I just UA-camd the bands that had tab books. These guys are killer.
made me weep like a baby. the lyrics hit so close to home. Thank you for over 10 years of being a huge part of my life.
I know it can tend to come off as half-hearted at times when fans say that “[insert band] just can’t release anything bad” but Rivers just cannot seem to release anything that is bad even with them pushing boundaries and norms of extreme metal.
Simply; they are legends.
I really didn't realize how much I needed this band until after I listened to them.
People complaining about the lyrics: do you honestly think this isn't metaphorical in some way? It will all make sense when the album drops
@DecrepitOrigin888 A lot of people on the tech death subreddit, and a few on here, were disappointed because it appears to be "about money =bad" and therefore basic. That sub also doesn't like the more progressive, less technical aspect. Personally I think the lyrics are gonna end up having a much deeper symbolism related to the concept of the album, but even at face value, it's still addressing an issue that's never been more relevant than it is right now, in a much more articulate way than your typical political statement in music. I also think the polarizing response to the musical direction is inevitable; tech death fans are bound to be disappointed if it isn't a true tech death album, but the writing was on the wall last album especially that this was the direction they were going, and I love the darker, more atmospheric approach to this song. Replacing the sax with synths makes me very happy, I think prog fans wil like this album a lot
How are Rivers of Nihil not huge... Every song, every album are so different, yet easily recognizable as them... Wonderful job, gentlemen...this song made my day!
The most versatile Death Metal output in 2021!
a not-so-goofy Rivers Of Nihil music video? oh my
I love how abstract/unconventional their music is, yet ‘A Home’ is just a typical abandoned warehouse music video 😂
Spotify repeat button is going to be broken ... simply 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏽
Good god I just keep loving these guys more and more.
They've officially reached the ranks of BTBAM, Opeth, and Tool
Would love to see you guys tour with Archspire, Beyond Creation and Inferi. Would be a mad tour!
Listening again this song is hitting very hard. The feeling of not being able to come back from what you've become while working so hard for what you want and need. Many aspects of my life may never be "clean" again, and I've accepted that. But it doesn't mean I won't keep working at it. Love you guys so much, gonna try and keep it together at work now.

Why not both? More horns in general. When used tasteful at thr right times ... it's not one or the other. I believe there's actually saxophone accompaniment on this track

Incredibly beautiful ❤
Been following these guys since the first LP. It’s been crazy to see the growth of this band.
Beyond glad I got to se these dudes live on the Death To All tour.
I didn't even know who they were, started asking around if people knew any of the opening bands, some bald bearded guy starts talking with me & say's "They're supposed to be decent".
That lead to us talking back and forth about shit we've seen done/ experienced in our short time on this earth. Suddenly as RoN is finished with their soundcheck, the guy says "I gotta go man, it's been good talkin' to ya"
He then grabs the mic & opens with Old nothing.
The best part was, he went out of his way to continue our conversation AFTER He finished the set.
You guys have my undying respect & devotion.

It's not not often a song/album leaves me speechless, but this one just did. Thanks, Rivers, you magnificent specimens of men and musicians. Can't wait to hear the entire record and see you live in Sept.

Thank God lol. These guys would work well in labeling themselves as jazzcore in the future 🤣
I’m fine if they don’t fall into gimmicks they don’t need to have sax in every song
I have never been so excited for a metal release. WOKMN had so much thought put into it. Crazy to think what will be involved with the winter theme. My guess is it will be Dark & Heavy due to the nature of the season.
Agoraphobia basically gave the hint at that . I'm excited as well
This song is so satisfying. What a masterpiece of an album. You guys killed it again.
It`s so strange. The videos and music from the last album feels almost like a fever fantasy. And when listening I can almost picture the same atmosphere as the videos. Kodos
blown away.

Follow these guys from their first album and they never disappoint. Here is some sophisticated metal this time with a lot of influences from prog scene that is delightful
Just discovering this band... amazing... keep up the great work guys...
Just Beyond Creation is left, and that'll be a wrap for all the great albums of Tech Death this year.
@KingSlayer I was talking about Tech Death bands who haven't announced anything about their new work. And that's only Beyond Creation for now. Most of the other bands including Obscura have announced dates for new album, whereas there's still no news from Beyond Creation.
@DecrepitOrigin888 Origin needs to put out some tunage already!!!
@KingSlayer man the singles are sounding really good, seeing Obscura in December. Can't wait to see that lineup with the new tracks.
