I´ve thought I would never hear the original demo tape of one of my beloved songs since 35 years. 25 years ago a radio DJ told the story, from the tape on a doorstep, and now I found it. All my thanks to grillogriggs. But now let me hear again to the wonderfull guitar play of Mark Knopfler. It was and it is allways a decent piece of sunshine in hard times.
"too long with too many words!" That's the criticism this song was given by some of the labels for rejection. I have to laugh. The first time I heard this song on the radio it was like "who the heck is that!" Love at first aural.
@Sollers24... The band gathered 120 pounds to record a demo of five songs in 1977 (or early in 1978). Including Sultans of Swing, Down to the Waterline, Water of Love, Wild West End and Sacred Loving. The sent it in to a local radiostation that started to play Sultans of Swing.
It reminds me when I was a little child and my father taught this song to his guitar students...it was so nice to hear the classes while I played with my dolls =P hauahuahau!!
It's more than likely recorded in the same original key. (Dm) This sounds like tape overspeed, which explains why the vocals have the chipmonk quality to them. Just slow it down to the right key.
Genial. That's what I say. harrmonia this song with its melody and purity. a Fender. if I stay here talking about the wonders. Dire Straits and Mark. would be by the year 3000 I only have one thing to say. Monumental!
I listen to Dire Straits, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, Biggy Smalls, Heavy D, the Beatles, Ray Charles, Los Lobos, Cesare Evora, Senegalese music, Led Zeppelin, Reggae, Ska, Rock Steady, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters, Tony Bennett, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Pink Martini, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, etc., etc., etc.! I listen to more different varities of music than anybody else I know and what they all have in common is that it is all good music to me!!!
I remember when I use 2 listen 2 this song I would think it was my da because my dad use 2 play and sing this song with his guitar and he would sound just like them. This song is forver engraved in my head
Think you.. think you Mak Knopfler and Dire Straits For your careeer ans for your GOOD, GOOD, GOOD MUSIC ..good plays guitars and otherrs instruments .
@jOntzohr sure. but dude look at the vid name... its recorded as a demo... so for 1977 its on tape... and tape sounds like this... especialy if its like 30 years old...
@lucas_pbh You have cloth ears and no understanding of music nor the ability to recognise great music. Thank God you are in no position to decide who gets a recording contract.
@bartstoppel Just because was made back in -77 or something doesn't mean it has to be in bad quality. That would mean that every track back then hade that crappy quality.
@haarukkamestari it seems a bit noticeable that the tape speed is a bit faster, hence this difference. Check it against a guitar with standard tuning and see if the sounds match. If they don't, blame the tape.
it sounds very much like the final take that's on the record, not like the soutbound again demo that you have here to, that one has a funkyier sound compared with the record take, great that you have all this in here, greetings!
Music is always more than just great musicians or great songs. Some sort of energy happens where the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. Were the Beatles that much better with Ringo than Pete? Ringo added whatever that ingredient was to complete the magic. I think Dire Straits were still OK without David, though not as good, but I agree that when Pick left, that disturbance in the force was just too great to continue with the magic. This is my story, and I'm sticking with it.
I heard on the radio once that Mark Knopfler wrote this song and the fills using a steel guitar. That would have been cool to hear. PS: Enough arguing about musical tastes. Leave everyone else's music tastes alone for crying out loud, and enjoy your own.
@bartstoppel Yeah you're right :) Must have been so much harder to get anything sensibel recorded back then without financial backup of a record company. I mean, today you can buy a microphone for 20 dollars and record with the same quality as this demo, if not better.
in those days they recorded on reel to reel tape... the demo copy would be made on a cassette for the band to.take home. Often the tape speeds of domestic tape machines varied, and hence a normal.tape copied onto a slightly slower machine and then and then later played on a different machine would result in these kind of abnormalities.

Very nice,so good music, a little bit of noise in the recording but very nice demo happy :D
I do not know if that's the real demo version, but these guys are amazing since the beginning of the band

i feel embarassedto say i wouldn't have taken them with this demo :D
@lucas_pbh You have cloth ears and no understanding of music nor the ability to recognise great music. Thank God you are in no position to decide who
gets a recording contract.
It is sped up! still sounds cool tho
@noudthe3rd c'mon telegraph road is an epic song, and plenty of mark's genius in it.
i think 90% of all music from any time period sucks, but most of the older stuff is just forgotten.
@Loudyest thats a great opinion.... i lijke it
@bartstoppel Just because was made back in -77 or something doesn't mean it has to be in bad quality. That would mean that every track back then hade that crappy quality.
genial :D

masterpeice. MK is a bonafide Guitar God
@Loudyest He has a point - the corporate takeover of music is anathema to the human spirit. It's killing it!
The Rock of Ages does not die, it slays all comers
@haarukkamestari that's because this song moves too fast which gives it a higher pitch for sure it's the musical god mark!
it sounds very much like the final take that's on the record, not like the soutbound again demo that you have here to, that one has a funkyier sound compared with the record take, great that you have all this in here, greetings!

UA-cam has just award his keep.
@ferzonian
well what about bonham?
@Lavolt006 that´s f.... right!
I heard on the radio once that Mark Knopfler wrote this song and the fills using a steel guitar. That would have been cool to hear.
PS: Enough arguing about musical tastes. Leave everyone else's music tastes alone for crying out loud, and enjoy your own.
@computersmangreece mark knopfler bro
Feels better than general version.
@DefinitionUntalented
that, or because he was younger in the time this demo was recorded, it sounds pretty old. you may be right though
@Lavolt006 You say Deep Purple I say Dire Straits, you say Van Halen I say Rolling Stones :)
@Lavolt006 you do realize rock n' roll is more popular than almost every other genre of music right?
@bartstoppel Yeah you're right :) Must have been so much harder to get anything sensibel recorded back then without financial backup of a record company. I mean, today you can buy a microphone for 20 dollars and record with the same quality as this demo, if not better.
And hell we could fork over 50 bucks for a very high quality sounding mic nowadays.
lol that s great!! how did u find this??
gracias a arturo elias por elrefres comusical
I wonder if it's sped up or if they actually changed the key and the tempo for the '78 re-recording. This version does sound really cool, though.
Nah, it's a 33 record being played at 45 rpm.
in those days they recorded on reel to reel tape... the demo copy would be made on a cassette for the band to.take home. Often the tape speeds of domestic tape machines varied, and hence a normal.tape copied onto a slightly slower machine and then and then later played on a different machine would result in these kind of abnormalities.
Who's here because they're on around page 90 of John Illsley's book? 😉
The chorus
Yes yes is Mark Knofler when was young ;)
((^.~))
~Tinorbison~
This is incredibly fast. :D
When this was first released in 79, I mistook it for Bob Dylan.
Quando eu morrer. Quero que token no meu funeral
It is too fast. Listen to the sound and check the speed
I agree, but it's also kinda cool at this tempo
Repas du soir
Time is the enemy in the studio!
Everybody ssshhhhhhh!!! Just shut up listen and enjoy!!! There is many version of this song like the extended version ! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whats going on with the guitar sound?
Pick Whiters = Best Drummer Ever in the World
dissing RnB and liking Van Halen, rock started with Rhythm and Blues and prolly died a little with Van Halen
