There might be a couple more pure, raw talented drummers in the universe, but Danny Carey is the most intelligent, and innovative... hands down. The man invents rhythms in his sleep.
At 0:30 I played a series of 5 strokes repeatedly: r-l-r-l-l With the emphasis on one and two of every other measure. It becomes more complex at 0:42 with: flam tap-r-l-l-r-l-r-l-r (each measure). So you're essentially playing two double strokes with your left hand then a double stroke with your right hand that straddles the boundary of the measure.
Danny Carey is one of those drummers that writes parts in which you really have to think about what you are doing when you are playing them. Great cover
Hey man! You play so awesome!!! May i ask you for a wish??? (lol) please, upload more tool songs without the track, just drums... PLEEASEEEEEE... I'm a guitar player, and it's so wonderful to play with you!!! :P
Hi there - thanks so much for this feedback. You read my mind - I'm thinking of doing more tutorial-focused videos for the next series. The studio has been delayed a little due to some zoning issues I'm having with the city. But I'm anxious to build it and start recording again!
Writing chops for these songs in the studio is one thing... Writing them KNOWING that fans will be hanging on EVERY beat and note... Is the kind of sadism only a master could enjoy!
This one seems to be so simple to me, at first, but there'are so many nuances that could make dozens of different songs. I'm not a drummer though, can hardly imagine what it is to learn such stuff. Great job, love your videos and hope you won't stop making new ones!
Oh....8 years ago almost to the day huh? Well for what it's worth, I f'n love your drums only videos of Tool songs! I only wish there were more b/c jamming to your tracks is so damn satisfying! You are a very talented dude sir. Bonus: if you hit left on your keyboard a bunch at the beginning, John will dance interactively bahaha!
:))) it really shouldn't. Drums are the most powerful and loudest part of a song. They create the impact of the explosion and the bass and guitars are the aftermath.
@@Cymanytb There's no "more impactful" here. The music has 4 components and taking one out hurts the song. Taking 3 completely kills it. If the drums were THAT huge, it wouldn't sound that empty, would it.
@@darkySp well yeah cause it's a UA-cam video. If you were to see them in person, Danny carey playing drums will move your kidney stones. Drums are the most powerful part of the song.
@@darkySp But I agree, there is no the grudge if there are only drums. it's just 25% of the song. Also, here I agree that Johnkew has made the drums in his cover way mellower and softer than Danny's but that's just because he didn't have Danny's kit and sound. Now, tho if you check the last cover of invincible and drums only, you can notice how powerful the drums are there (still not as powerful as Danny's but close enough) :))
A few things... 1 - This song in particular highlights how drumming, in addition to leading, both sets and expands dynamic boundaries 2 - Well, done sir...a few slight timing inaccuracies but since you're clearly a better drummer than I am I should really just shut the hell up about it. 3 - during 8:09-8:13 your facial expression looks a lot like Garth drumming on 'Wayne's World'. 4 - Thanks for sharing this. It made my life a little better.
Thanks man, and the Paiste hats are holding up fine. They are actually one of the last remaining pieces from my original kit that I got back in 1988. So they have REALLY held up!
Thank you... You are truly inspirational. Danny puts so much creative energy into these parts. And you tap into them beautifully. Awesome and thank you for taking the time to put these covers together.
Hey bud, good to hear from you. I like the drum mix on this one too - I'm finally getting a sound I like after more than a year of mixing drums. The funny thing is that each recording is a new challenge in mixing. It's not like you can copy your settings from a previous recording - they all sound different for whatever reason. Hope your weekend is a good one too, cheers.
This is awesome! I enjoy jamming the guitar part with all the tool songs but this one is great because its drums only. Its great practice especially in a ten count. Any more tool drums only would be cool. Thanks man. Awesome job by the way. Danny would be proud!
Hi buddy. Nice idea uploading the drums alone. Your kit sounds really nice - kick, toms, snare and cymabls combined. The small cluster of v-drums is a sweet idea. Really hope to hear some more tracks from you soon when you have more time to play. Have a great weekend dude, and all the best to the family...... and be sure to pop over and give my regards to the cranky old girl next door :)
Sir, Thanks much for posting this. I like being able to not only watch the finished product of a song you cover, but also just the raw drum footage. Would you consider perhaps someday making tutorial videos for technique and/or general instruction? Also, how is the new studio coming along? Blessings to you and your family.
It's good. You recited the song well and the drums sound nice. However, a lot of the time it seems like the consistency of your hits is being sacrificed by how hard your trying to play the drums. It looks like it's making you tense and is therefore ruining the fluidity of the patterns and particularly the faster parts like at 8.08. Just loosen up and use your wrists more and keep relaxed. Good video though!
Great sound and execution, really ! Can you please explain what do you mean with "Gretsch Catalina and Renown maple" ? Which is the one used in this video ? I'm thinking of buying the new Catalina model...
Hello, I really admire your covers and I have one question for you. I'm preparing guitar cover of The Grudge right now, and here's my question: Do you mind if I'll use your cover for drum line and if you don't, are you able to share some high quality audio file?
At first the audio and visual lag really bothered me but you’re playing sounds fantastic and ignoring that lag really shows ya the depth of you’re understanding and dynamics. Carey is a monster. Cheers bro
+cack1234 I would like to try and do the vocals if your interested, i dunno how good I am and if I can nail this difficult song but I would like to try:)
I wonder if you have had arm injuries during your drumming time, if you pause the video @ 4:57 your arms are really really bent.... If it works well for you, then (of course) continue this way, but it just looks really "unhealthy". From my point of view, your bass drum sounds dead, I guess it could have a lot more punch ;) nevertheless, thank you for this video, I'm currently practising that song and this helps a lot, keep it up
First of all, thank you for this amazing cover! I listened to it over and over and it helped me a lot figuring out some parts of the song. I used your cover and another "bass only" cover I found on UA-cam (ua-cam.com/video/KygcEnesn0M/v-deo.html), put them together to have a Drum and Bass starting track on which I added the guitar. I'm not trying to make the promotion of my work here but since I don't know how to contact you directly, I'm using this comment space to ask if this is Ok with you (using your material in this way). The bass guy (Leo) already gave me his "Ok" to use his video for this and I'm writing to you to ask if that would be possible. Of course, I would give you all the credits for the drum track. I could send you the result of what I did if you want to hear it even if you are in another "league" than me (much better). Thanks in advance.
Luis Elias Obregon consider not being a douche. It’s not off tempo. You listen to the whole thing and all you want to do is grasp at straws to point out where he didn’t get it perfect to make yourself feel better? You must have a really fulfilling life.
There might be a couple more pure, raw talented drummers in the universe, but Danny Carey is the most intelligent, and innovative... hands down. The man invents rhythms in his sleep.
Thank you for doing a drums-only track. We bassists and guitarists appreciate it.
i used his cover yesterday as backing track for my guitar session haha
Respect
One of the few bands that i can know the song everytime just by the drumming.
Yes, Rush is another band like that.
And avenged sevenfold
The beauty of melodic drumming.

what about the part at 0:15 i can't figure it out for the life of me

Love hearing Tools drums by themselves, SO musical. Would love to hear Disp-Refl-Triad drums only PLEASE or just Reflection :)
It sounds so calm when you cut the rest of it out

What talent you got there Mr. I admire your skill
Evelyn Merchant Thanks!
Dana Cary seems to play the snare almost as the back beat and these Tom's are killer, great video.

The switch at 3:48, smooth as silk. Awesome. Love watching you.
Fun playing along with you! Thanks for that
Just played guitar along with this - it was absolutely spot on. Well done, dude, very impressive :D
Thank you... You are truly inspirational. Danny puts so much creative energy into these parts. And you tap into them beautifully. Awesome and thank you for taking the time to put these covers together.
dude I just traveled back in time and played this alongside you on guitar. great job, I've never completed it with anyone
Very cool to hear the drums alone. I'd love to see you cover Lateralus (especially since your Tool covers are so far the best I've seen)!
Thanks for the track, it really helps me understanding what is going on when I’m learning tool songs
absolutely killed that ending jesus

Outstanding job, man. You crushed it. Also Danny Carey FTW.
oh man amazing, so nice play and Danny Carrey s meditating drumming is all that i could wish as a background at my boring job ! thanx!
This is awesome! I enjoy jamming the guitar part with all the tool songs but this one is great because its drums only. Its great practice especially in a ten count. Any more tool drums only would be cool. Thanks man. Awesome job by the way. Danny would be proud!
you seem to nail Dannys work every time! awesome job
This is a gift to the world. Thank you so much
Very nice! One of my favorite Tool songs. _Sonno joi!_ _Amor fati!_
Hello John just wondering if you have a version with bass and your drums too, would be lovely if you could!
Danny Carey is my favorite drummer. And you are #2!
he cracked the code. nicely done!

I'm using mostly Catalina drums - the only Renown I'm using is the 10 inch tom.
7:54-8:27 my new ring tone
Scratch that...My new door bell

Hi there, mind if I use this for a collab video?
very nice!
That..was excellent.
7.55 YES!

Mr. John! Do you play in a band? And if not why the fuck not?! You have real talent man. I'd love to hear some shit you personally wrote.
At first the audio and visual lag really bothered me but you’re playing sounds fantastic and ignoring that lag really shows ya the depth of you’re understanding and dynamics. Carey is a monster. Cheers bro
Pity that your low tom is out of view. Been trying to learn this on my own and can’t quite figure it out.
doing the 5/4 over 5/8 is kinda hard
8:18
I'm thinking of layering myself playing the guitar track over this and uploading.. Good idea? Who wants to do the bass and vocals? :p
+cack1234 I would like to try and do the vocals if your interested, i dunno how good I am and if I can nail this difficult song but I would like to try:)
IN CRE DI BLE!!! ²
tabs?
0:30 - tune your tom 3 semitones down!
Agree! Way too high!
Staying up way too late playing my bass along to this…
That’s was fantastic mad props, but please deaden that snare just a little and it will give it a nice crack.
As long as the Anuannki walk please do Schism!!!!!
DOPE! Keep that up mang... Danny would be proud!
Wrong... Danny knows how to recognize a hack.
busier than a one legged man in an arse kickin comp

This made me so uncomfortable.
What happened to the 32 notes on the double bass at the begginning? Off tempo as well. Consider playing with a click

Also those are sextuplets, or sixlets if you will, it 32nd notes. They're phrased in six not groupings, not 8
Great tom sound.
Really?
are you just free stylin it???.....
Duddeeeeee sucks you got copyrighted:(
He is to drums what eminem is to words.
Man you just lost 5 pounds after playing this song
