Great to see the 3 Beasts of Dufftown lined up against each other. And Scott, I'm with you on the 16yo. My bottle's been open now for about 4 months and the level is well below the shoulder - and it's superb. Really intensive, luscious mouthfeel and some fantastic drying European oak spices on the finish. And yes, it doesn't need to be first-fill sherry butts because balance is easier to achieve when the distillery character is not swamped by overpowering casks. Bart, you'll just need to stick with it a bit and give it another try in a couple of months - if Scott will let you. Oh, and then there's the thorny issue of the 2.81 distillation. Well, you really do need a PhD to understand the process. I've read it through twice and I'm still not there yet. But here's the way Mortlach's former brand ambassador put it - Georgie Bell, who by the way has studied this stuff and knows what she's talking about: Good Luck!
"Mortlach distillery has 6 stills, 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills and what sets them apart is that all of their stills are different shapes and sizes and they all work pretty much independently from one another. They don’t work in perfect pairs but create three different spirit characters from the three spirit stills which are then blended to create the house style.
“It’s like having three distilleries at the one still house”, Georgie Bell explains.
The first of these is the pairing of wash still 3 and spirit still 3 to create a malty distillate. Wash stills 1 and 2 work as a pair, which is unusual. We then take everything that has run through and split it into half, the heads and the tails. The first half from wash stills 1 and 2, the low wines the lighter half, are run through spirit still number 2 which creates a lighter floral distillate.
The heavier half of wash stills 1 and 2 is run that through spirit still number 2 once but no cuts are taken. Everything that has run through is run through a second time but with the tails from wash stills 1 and 2. The richer half and the richer half gets even further richer and viscous.
If spirit still number 1 is small, and its filled high, then it’s a bit of a copper contact. So taking it around twice is not really cleaning it to that same effect, so no cuts are taken. Everything that has gone around that second time is run through a third time with the set of heads from wash stills 1 and 2 because by this point, it has become way too thick and way too viscous. A spirit cut is taken from that.
A spirit cut is taken from spirit still number 1 from every third run. Mortlach use worm tub condensers and the water is cold at 10 degrees, which means as soon as that vapour hits the copper, it turns back into liquid. So when the spirit is in liquid form, the copper cannot do its work, so every part of the production process is calibrated to create this character, and this has been calculated to be 2.81.
“I know it is nearer to three than to two,” Georgie Bell adds. “Usually when you say triple distilled, you think of a lighter spirit. The 2.81 actually stands for the precision in the way that it has been distilled.”
Thanks Russell and great information on the 2.81 distillation!
Great!, well done guys. Thank you Scott, Thank you Bart!
thank you Luis!
I’ve been patiently waiting for Mortlach. Thanks for reviewing fellas. 👍
thanks for watching Bronco!
Love these kind of comparisons, thanks gents!
Thank you
Great review, and I absolutely love the toast guys! 😁 Cheers! 🥃
But of course...!
Great video guys , ala WhiskyWhistle half live, taped with a live chat. Very cool
thanks Santacruz! UA-cam Premiere!
Thanks for the shoutout. Bart, (since you like it so much) my last name is German and means “middle of the village”. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Isaac. My last name...Brunscheen...is also German. I had one native speaker tell me it means "farmer of the dirt" and another told me it means nothing special in German at all...Maybe it means the outer edge of the village...bart
Watched this live premiere this morning. While I was out this afternoon seen and picked up the 12 year old @ $47. They did not have the older versions. I agree 90 out of 100. Great nose and palate. 🥃👍
Very nice and thanks Moose!
Great review! I’ve been toying with the idea of picking these up, but I think I’ll go for something else. Slainte!
at least try the 12, its great at the price point.
I just went to a tasting of this a couple weeks ago. I was pleasantly surprised how good they were (never had them before) but the 16yr was definitely the hit of the evening. And I think it's priced reasonably. Great show, thanks guys!
exactly, thanks Lana!
They're finally here! I've been waiting months for them to show up in Kansas. Hopefully we'll see them in Manhattan soon. Great overview, guys. There's a bottle of the 16 with my name on it. (Literally... I have a standing order for one at my regular shop.)
nice Jason! Let us know what you think!
Revisiting this as I’ve just bought the 20. Looking forward to it.
i really like it. Scott
Thanks for the review, now i know i can consider the 12, which wasnt on my radar.
absolutely! thanks apu de geest!
Great review guys. And enjoy Ireland!
thanks oneglassman!
Excellent comparison 🙂
Thanks Sow
Great review gentlemen, but I'm in the same spot as Bronco Rog since the Mortlach expressions have not reached my state. So I picked up an 8 yo expression from Signatory's Non Chill Filtered collection and hope to open it soon. Cheers to awesome drams and Pot Luck reviews!
nice Mose! Thanks!
Just picked up the 12yo tonight. I bought it because it was $20 CAD off sale (regular $100 CAD). I enjoyed your comments. It was a bit more spicy than I was expecting. A couple of drops of water opened up the oak and vanilla notes. I will come back to it in a couple days to compare.
nice, thanks Karl!
Thanks for the review guys. I found the 16 year on sale for $72 US at a local store here but it is normally $115 US. I'm wondering if it is 750 mL though. Anyway I am a big fan of the ex-sherry bottles unless I get a rotten cask flavour in it (Yep that just happened recently in a Berry Bros and Rudd store pick). Slainte
Hell of a line up brothers.
thanks RPT!
Great you're coming over the pond. I heard you'll visit Scotland too. Are you going to the feis ile on Islay? It's in the last week of May!
we will be there the week before the Feis.
@@ScotchTestDummies Too bad, thought I could perhaps say hello to you guys in person but I'll be on Islay a week later.
Have fun and buy the delicious distillery only bottlings :-)
definitely Raymaster!
Great video gents.
thanks Rob!
My 12 year Mortlach has been open about 4 months now and is really improving as the level goes down. A good whisky at a really good price point.
Scott agrees!
I agree. Satisfied with the 12 year old especially for the price point.
Sorry to have missed this. I got the 16 2 weeks ago and getting the 12 and 20 today. As far as the 16 I am with Bart. Not sure I would buy it again. I think the rare old is better. As for the 2.81 distillation, it is a mixture of triple and double distilled barrels. They marry them up to equal 2.81, which means that there are more triple distilled liquids than double. The old 18 year is still my favorite and the Gordon McPhail 25 year mortlach is awesome.
i don't remember quite the sherry influence on the Rare Old. Even at the price, the 16 beats it I think! Scott
@@ScotchTestDummies Actually about the same as the 16, which to me does not have much of a sherry influence either. But the rare old is considerably smoother. If you have any left try compare it.
Nice rundown, wonder how the old 18 compares, similar price point to the new 20 in my neck of the woods
never had it, would be interesting.
Awesome video boys....I have had one Mortlach that was of my favorites ever, and then I had the Mortlach Rare Old that really disappointed me....at least for the price. Not bad whisky just way overpriced. I can't wait to try these!
nice Keith. Thanks!
Looks like the 12 year is the best value of the bunch. WB Liquor that is attached to Costco near me has the Mortlach 12 year at $47. I may have to pick one up now.
definitely Dean!
I actually picked up the 12yo last night. Coincidences do happen! lol
let us know what you think.
Gonna be interesting to hear what you say guys!
they're all good!
They all sound good but the 12 year old is the only one in my price range
and it's good.
I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the 16 took me a while to get into it but really enjoying it. Will get the 12 next. The bottle looks like a giant fancy perfume bottle with cut glass. Too bad it's chill filterd and colored. Cheers
the 12 is a great buy! the 16 normal price range!
@@ScotchTestDummies About half way through the 12 now and instant connection for me. Definitely a better value than the 16 which is good but this is a real show stopper for me. Get where Bart is coming from with the roasted finish I get that on the 12 especially when left to sit in the glass for some time, was thinking barrel char/worm tubb influence ?
Just bought the Mortlach 12 year, last one at my nearest Total Wine. I've never seen Mortlach on a shelf here in Michigan. Distribution must be new around here. Anyway, state min is $62.99 for the 12, $124.99 for 16, $199 for 20. Hope the 12 is worth the $67 after tax that I dropped. Cheers!
Let us know what you think after tasting it
You guys are a bad influence 😜. Now I have to go find me at least one bottle of Mortlach.
Or worse yet...all three
I heard the 2.8 is because they do a sort of Queen’s share, and add som heads and tails to the spirit
Interesting
Good news, that you get to do some travellin' (+ choosing a more pleasant time of year). Are you two just strictly tending to Business at Waterford Distillery, or you plan get to venture off elsewhere and do your own thing(s)?
we're not sure what the itinerary will be yet!
Is it better than Glenfiddich 12 or Mallacan or Balvenies ?
all depends on the person drinking it
Mortlach is hard to find on the east coast. 12 yo is at least $55 if you can find it.
these are newer to the market and the 12 is worth $55!
i love old mortlach - but over 200 € / $ for a 20 year old with 43 % abv ... ?? thats tough.
i have 2 independent bottlings aged 22 and 23 years in first fill sherry butts @ cask strength ...and they were around around 140-150 €s. i really think those are the better buys, even though i get the appeal of official bottlings.
i've heard some of the Independent bottling are the best ones.
finally came across the 12 yr old. had to see if you reviewed it and it looks like ill jump on the bottle.
definitely, thanks Erik.
Your closing before was great. Forget the new toast it gives me douche chills as it reminds me of Rex and Daniel and they should not be anyone’s role models as they are are slimier than used car salesmen.
actually brought about because of Simon Brooking!
Unfortunately, regardless of the inspiration, it looks and feels like a copycat move. You were the first whisky channel I started watching and you are still my favorite. I would hate for anyone to think that you drew inspiration from a couple of hucksters.
Interesting to see this "PotLack" style and good reviews! Is Bart missing his buddy Pete with these 3? All those fruits and even honey so they must be healthy. Sounds kindalike breakfast in a glass?! I'm all for the healthy. Cheers!
they help replace essential vitamins and minerals too!
Sounds refine, but where's the Beast?
its right there on the box!
Less on box, more in whisky
Is Bart always so singular?
i would like to say yes right off the bat, but in what way singular? Scott
He seems to think if there is no input of him it will fall off the rails quick even if Bart has little experience in connecting flies at Dallas or what have you. My living grandfather is like that. We're setting a VIA train trip to Banff for him because he has no clue how, but damn if not going give his input how to do it. LOL! Almost like their making you're not a idiot.
I am not single-er...bart
A year later, and most 12 year olds went from 40-50 to 60-75!
And we ain’t done yet
@@ScotchTestDummies well the comment is old. Now I wish I could find 12 yr olds for $60.
I stopped at “Testeeeeeed”
Perfect, you got to see the best part. Ha
the only case it will be interesting if you add F&F release comparison to new 16. period.
Hey Whisky folk! Hey @scotch test dummies love me some Mortlach, heard good things about these!
