    It all makes sense when you taste it. Very well integrated without too much of the wood

      @@Gwhisky Haha I did not know (I was expecting more Canadian slang, like "eh and 'ubouts" if so, sorry for the mixup). ^^

    Great review. Awesome to taste along with your commentary and pick up many of the same notes you call out. Given the richness, sherry, and orange citrus, this falls somewhere between macallan 12 sherry oak and glenmo 18 on the flavor spectrum for me.

    This is currently on sale for $132 (Canadian) at the LCBO. Maybe I should grab 2. LOL. Great review as always. Maybe it’s time to monetize, your reviews are fantastic. Cheers!

    Tasted alot of Indy Mortlach 20 year olds. They are all fantastic. The Game of Thrones bottle they did was also better than expected.

    Ok, I realize this video is a couple years old but just a note on the 700ml bottles in the US market... I'm calling this relevant because they're just now really showing up in numbers we can notice.
    I love it. We hoped that it would open up more availability from bottlers who couldn't (or wouldn't) make the effort to bottle in two different sizes, and indeed it has. Do I miss the extra 50ml in each bottle? No, not at all. Most of my bottles have a 2-4 year life on my shelf. That means I'm short one and a half pours over ~3 years. I don't even notice the difference. But I sure do notice the extra availability.

    Great review man you pretty much nailed it on this one. Meaty and chewy for sure; the umami notes give it serious gravitas for its' age. Glenfarclas 15 with a side of smoked ribs! Definitely a winner despite Diageo. Imagine this at 46% and not chill-filtered! $90 in Alberta right now how many more should I get to put aside!?!

      Thanks! Hah $90 CAD not bad at all. Yeah this would be amazing with natural presentation. Already solid stuff as it is!

    I've seen this at 75 EUR, and if I could get this for less than that, I might consider it.
    I currently enjoy the 12 quite a bit. The umami notes are present there as well and really round out the character.

    Interestingly all the Mortlachs are 750ml here in Australia as well - seems like that 750ml is their export bottling size. Had the 12yo (wee witchie) but wasn't impressed enough to buy it again or move up to the 16yo. So many options that have integrity standards above this that makes me think that they're a sort of Dalmore-lite with travel retail (... I remember the days ;) ) as one of their aims. Before the shut down there was a 14yo travel exclusive that nearly tempted me ... I might pick it up if we can ever get back to international traveling once more.
    Good luck with your channel - always good to get another perspective. Cheers

      I've had the 12 and I think it's nice, but not a favourite. I think the 16 is the best value in the range (I say that not having tried anything older). But if you're a stickler for higher abvs or natural presentation, then yeah, Mortlach is not likely to be high on your wishlist. Thanks for the comment!

    Would be interesting to know how the chill filtering has made this not as good as it could be. Very much nooby here as my comment adheres. I can kind of guess why the abv could be higher and the coloring components make this not as good, because I very much enjoy the taste of alcohol (tannins in my understanding so far) in a dram, and I'm all for natural color especially if coloring makes any kind of flavor change. No thanks for coloring. Anyway, if it wasn't chill filtered, what would be different about this whisky please? Thanks for another great review!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому +2

      I'm not sure to be honest. As whisky drinkers we don't have access to side-by-sides between chill filtered and non chill filtered versions of the same whisky. Some claim that very little is lost, while others insist much is lost in terms of body and intensity. I'm of the mind that there is a difference, although it's often a minute one. And even if the difference is minimal, it's still an unnecessary process that could easily be skipped, allowing for a more natural product.

      @@Gwhisky I think so too in my learnings so far. From other's reviews, I've heard that some cloud can occur when not chill filtered when adding a bit of water. Some cloud is ok by me if it has anything to do with preserving a good flavor. Maybe its that a bit of cloud would scare off the not so knowledged consumer. I really don't know. Anyway thanks for the reply and it is always great to learn more about this seemingly infinite subject scotch. Looking forward to watching more of your reviews.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah the cloudiness is precisely why they chill filter. Understandable from the distillers perspective, although it's frustrating for people like us.
