you can tell kendrick's thoughts haunt him
AFV571 I'm glad that he embraces it and expresses it via his music...instead of hiding behind immense amounts of drugs and alcohol like most rappers have...
+sherbertdjones exactly, that's what sets him apart. long live king Kendrick
Very much so
The Brooklyn Introvert absolutely
AFV571 exactly! you can tell he’s been through a lot
I love how he takes the time to think about his answer, something as small as that is important in today's society
real shit
They say he actually has a stuttering issue. He was traumatized after seeing his uncle get shot when he was younger
LegitVideoGamers12 I agree. I used to hate rap because the only known, popular artists were shit like 2chainz and Yeezy, but a lot of these rappers who are getting popular now are actually trying to get in touch with philosophical ideas
Yeah Vincent he does have a stutter problem he explains a little of how he got it in "maad city" he says "at that same burger stand where *beep* hanged out,now this is not a tape recorder saying that he did it but ever since that day I was looking at him different that was back when I was nine,Joey packed his nine"So his uncle that got shot was Joey
Tom M Me 2, but I have some good friends who turned me on to sum underground artists, who take a lot of messages similar to Kdot and give them back with their own flavor. If you are interested in more "concious" or meaningful hip hop just google for underground hip hop. Pop rappers are not a great standard to hold rap to even though its really easy to fall in to that conception, cause its all over the radio/ award shows. Enjoy bro
"Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice; I say the darker the flesh and the deeper the roots"

Yeah Wayne is a bitch.

yesssssss!
+Janai Pulliam yeah I love myself
Like I'm pretty sure in Good Kid, m.A.A.d City. Kendrick's Dad says in a little skit at the end of a song about how a killing a man don't make you gangster. Kendrick is a smart man.
a real gangster is either dead or in jail, or behind the scenes makin real money(kendrick refrence). also in a older song of his he mentions he doesn't have the personality of a killer and could never kill.
I really don't understand how someone so brilliant in self-expression can exist...
Dhruv Khurana thank god
I'd rather thank the humans who have helped him get there
Thats probably every ones potential tbh
They are out there, sparsely sprinkled : )
@@TheDictismiT one of the realest comments I've ever read.
Guys a genius but would never have made it without the support of the people that helped him get there.
And considering those people were selfless (in respect of helping someone else get to greater heights than there own) they play as big a part in his impact and success and himself.
nice interviewer, good listener and asks the right questions

Random, nerdy ass, communications major observation... Love the pauses! Rather than using constant fillers (um, like) he pauses and thinks about his words. For someone who is SO quick and lyrically talented, if he he's pausing to think? Its collective, concise and coming from somewhere deep.
As a communications major, I recognized that immediately.
+Lindsey Roberts 😎 team Com nerds for the win!

in my opinion, kendrick is already in the top 15 hip-hop artists of all time
Matthew Kim i know im going to get roasted for saying this but Kendrick has proven to be top 2
@justice tupac of course.
@hakeem I kinda agree with you but he's near that level.
Hes in my top 5 such a great artist
mistaezzy Kendrick's my #1, but for an "objective" list, i need to respect the people who came before him, because kendrick does reference a lot of other artists in his music.
There's not a track on this album that I can say I dislike, it's a perfect album.
I love every song on it!! It's Beautiful
True
Ngl every song is good to a masterpiece, but Momma and U are pretty alright in my opinion but not my thing. Top 20 album of all time genuinely though.
@@andrewstephens5885 Momma and u are both exceptional songs man I can’t see it
@@andrewstephens5885 grasp the meaning
Truthfully, when i first listened to this album i didn't get it....I thought it was all over the place, too much going on, not a straight and direct theme running through blah blah. Then after a few months T gave it another chance.... After sitting down and listening in depth, understanding the lyrics, the different themes, the FRIGGIN POEM TO 2PAC AT THE END!?? Now i question myself as to how i could be so stupid to only just realise the sheer importance and undeniable brilliance of this record. This will probably be one of the best albums i'll ever have the honour to experience in my lifetime. Just thank you Kendrick for wha you made, i'll shut up now.
I was the exact same way!
I listened to it the first time through and thought it was so so. But oh god, "You ain't gotta lie" got stuck in my head, so I tried a round 2, and damn! I also didn't finish mortal ma'am on my first listen, and I'm so happy I did!
I feel exactly the same after a lifetime of listening to good kid maad city and when i heard he had a new album i was like awwww shit here we go then i heard it im like wtf.. Its hurting my brain ion like it but i wasn't Listening..after i gave it a second shot i wanted to slap myself like im smarter than this but it really took all the way for me to see the grammy performance for me to give it another shot but im so glad i did he's a genius and the BEST RAPPER OF OUR TIME (not all time but the present time)

I appreciate how honest and REAL he is.. definitely one of the best of our time! Hip hop has come back yall!
Who said it left? It was just overshadowed by mainstream
Amir Amaru That's what happens when we let "others" control our stuff.
Darnell Hendeason thats what happens when most of the public is into bullshit. Believe me if the majority was into stuff like blacker the berry then the ones in "control" would be pushing that type of rap but people love ratchet shit nowadays weather on tv or on radio we eat it up so why would they feed us something else?
I agree to a point. But I think you underestimate the influence they have. They actively suppress anything that they see as a threat.
Darnell Hendeason I think you underestimate how much "they" want to get paid. I remember in the 90's when arrested development and de la soul was hot and damn near every rapper was wearing a dashiki and or a Africa pendant and talking about unity and shit. Do you know why? because it was selling. Those executives were looking for anybody with a dashiki who can spit. "They" simply just follow the trends and try to get the most money out of it. and right now the trend is Love and Hip Hop and ratchet rap. Moral of the story, we all get what we deserve
Kendrick has a flashback to the fucked up shit he's witnessed at 4:38 realest nigga in the game right now
cole is too
^^^ Coke is real but he hasn't seen tones most of the violence and hatred growing up like Kendrick did, I live in feyetville, and Ofcource theirs gangs cuz theirs gangs everywhere but it can't be compared to Compton

I hope all these people who were yelling "Coondrick" and all the azealia banks' can see this interview and realize that they jumped to conclusions & were wrong
They weren't real fans & I'm glad all of the bandwagon fans are gone. FUCK Azealia Banks, no matter how stupid people are on the Internet they will always have their cult following. It's crazy how quickly people will turn on someone they "love" which is what she said before.
Wow, they really called him that? Smh take about tearing someone down. I guess it's easier to not reevaluate your own actions and flaws than to admit when something is wrong. As blk people we need to be realistic with ourselves and take a look at ourselves nd our living situation. We haven't learned shit. So what he's saying is true. At the day of the day we are always going to be targeted by wp but we need to also get our shit together and educate OURSELVES on how white people operate and stop repeating the destructive fate by adapting these positions that have been made to destroy us.
I can't lie, "blacker the berry" makes me cringe... Basically because of the references that could be interpreted as self-deprecating in a way. Small village, monkey ect. But i kind of see him using those descriptions to disarm them
***** he is referring to white stereotypes and saying he doesn't give af what they say he's still a proud black man. It's intentionally supposed to make people feel uncomfortable because these days people are more subtle with their racism, but it still hurts all the same. That's why he said "sneak dissin" on "Complexion."
Obey MyMindlessness Azaelia Banks came to the realization that Kendrick is genuinely a real one, in one of her recent interviews.
I just hope and pray him and Cole don't go to soon like Pac and Biggie did because they're the best of the generation and without their music I don't know what I would do
Why would they? They don't have no beef with anyone afaik
Virgil McCrary you would carry on and be fine.
Xxxtentacion went too soon even though he had a great message. We jus gotta keep prayin for these rappers to stay safe
Me too
Alan Sketch but he had beef with hella people, kendrick and cole dont do that
At 4:40 where he pauses.. wow. You can really tell he has seen some stuff. What a beautiful soul, a genuine man. Strong enough to admit his flaws and urges, responsible and reflective enough to hold back against them and work to better himself. Kind enough to want to help his community. What an amazing figure.
Also, cheers to the interviewer. He is doing a really amazing job. He is knowledgeable about the album, topic, lyrics, artistry.. he responds to kdot's replies in very effective ways.. when he could tell there was a sensitive topic, he handled it appropriately and calmly.. great interviewer.
I love that Kendrick is still sticking to why hip hop was made. Not selling out like the other artists.
i feel like he is this generations 2pac
Why do people always gotta compare
+Isaac Espejel
What's controversial is the fact that people don't know the very vivid and clear difference between compare and contrast. So it's all good or it at least should be nothing to argue about u know?
+Isaac Espejel right doe
He is this generation's Kendrick Lamar
i feel like Joey Badass is.
I hope he never falls victim to the bulllshit pushed by labels. He is too gifted to be boxed in.
Kendrick is amazing live. Saw him at bonnaroo and I was blown away. Wish he was on stage for longer, but I can't wait to see him again.
lucky asf lol
We need a Kendrick Lamar biopic
I feel like 'good kid, maad city' is his biopic.
He's a smart guy, I appreciate that. Very well spoken
I just want to give him a hug :( The look in his eyes when he talks about his friends back home just breaks my heart
Me too! I imagine his friends were like family, and losing one family member is enough. Losing more is tragic, and still having to continue working through all of that is unbelievable and requires a lot of strength. I wish I could hug him too.
the blacker the berry slaps so hard the energy and hatred in these bars are one of a kind
true passion behind the lyrics.
An artist's perspective always adds another element of complexity to the music. I'm always excited to watch the interview, then I scroll down through the comments and get frustrated about how many Ppl missed the point. We have to do better and be more positive as a community our artists are giving us their heart on wax when they could be rapping garbage let's at lease be positive if you like the album or not.
Let's realize that your favorite rapper doesn't have to be everybody's favorite rapper or the best rapper for that matter. Elevate from base comments and negativity. We love this music I pray we all from it.
But its deeper than rap
:)
Love how he being real with the interview questions, he ain't speaking no dumb shyt he speaking right out the mind and like expressing everything on he sees things and how he dealt with them , So truthful , keep doing what you doing Man King Kendrick
Kendrick and J Cole have that depressed feel to them like but there 2 of the best MCs in hiphop. True poets
It Was Written is A classic though.
He never said it wasn't
From 4:30 to 4:50..Damn you can tell he's done a lot an seen a lot. Him an Cole the only artist you can feel their pain they music. Album was dope too..
Don't forget logics under pressure
Ron Smith Nas, Tupac, Guru, Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah.
Do you listen to hip hop besides them?
lol u aint heard Earl Sweatshirt or Polo G
@@seantaylor5051 lmao polo g
As a fellow Ethiopian woman who understands his message I approve this message. 'Negus' means King. And at this point this man is working himself to be a NEGUS.
That outro verse blows my mind. I was going to say blew but every time I listen to it and follow along I get the deepest chills, kendrick lamar genius by far
I love that word historically before slavery this is what we referred to our men as.Then after slavery it was turned into some back for black people. Glad you mentioned it. Haile Salassie had that title.
Niigi negus amen ase
Kendrick has my whole heart. I absolutely love this man and I love how vulnerable and transparent he is, and he's not afraid to say what's on his mind. This is beautiful on so many levels.
this album made me cry dude, so much power in every song on it
party pete I got CHILLS...you can feel the emotion...ESPECIALLY in "u"...it hurt me so much...I'm from Long Beach, and although I wasn't into as much as he was, I know that moment of opening your eyes to the corruption that surrounds you as you are trying to be a voice and an influence on your people.
"I've did a lot to tear down my own community"
That's powerful. I salute this man for being able to remain such an honest and sane soul while still trying to figure out the gift that he possesses.
Kendrick should direct a movie, like boys n the hood 2
Yeah, Yeah Yeah
Up
Up
Up
Replay BR and awayyyyy
This mans music will be played for generations
I can't wait for a rapper 2 speak as highly of kendrick as he does of Tupac
quite good whenever you observe what's going on
4:39 Kendrick was about to cry because my have killed someone and he's remembering when he killed that person that was the same skin color as him but not wearing the same colors as him and now he is regretting that decision he has made and that's why he made that song "The Blacker the Berry". its a song about how the black community is treated horribly but yet the black community are killing their own kind
i had a stroke reading that wtf
As a latino Blacker The Berry hits hards in the feelings. I understand where he is coming from and also want answers on what to do about the ongoing issue at hand. Should we all leave together as dust, as we came, or do we fight until the hatred spreads into our soul...
Is this interviewer J. Cole's long lost brother?
J coles brother is actually white as hell
+Cheif Sikbreen lol yoo
Kendrick also be like, 'you and jcole are lookalike'.
+Dready Zealot Constant You must be blind cause Cole's brother is really white lmao
+Rip Phife Dawg that's why he said "long lost" 😂😂😂 stupid ass
im balling my eyes out. this mans vibe is making me so emotional. i can’t believe ive never got to get into his music

+Candy Gossaye lol..some performance huh
Man I just watched his performance because my son was telling me about it... All I can say is wow! Kendrick Lamar went deep with it didn't he? I'm proud of him
+FORGIVENESS ISFREEDOM it was touching i can tell you that...I u understand his pain amd views...It's time we set asidebtje negatives thoughts about each and save this planet...well i may be dreaming but we will never recognize asbthe one who influence this Country's culture...
He is one of the few artists in any genre that has the ability to both make great songs that also have important messages. This is what rap is supposed to be. I hope he keeps the thoughts and vision continuing in his career, he's brilliant.
i personally think that everyone should support is thing because he inspire a lot of young artist. keep doing you thing man..
The interviewer is really great, has a genuine back and forth with Kendrick and really guides him to express himself in a concise way
Damn he doesn't seem happy at all, like all his recent interviews have this depressing energy to them...
Schama Noel I think he`s emotionally drained from the long creative process of this album, it had a lot of emotion in it
I agree I see it too he's definitely battling emotions. I couldn't imagine being in his position though I'm sure now that he made it he wishes he can save everybody, and he can't especially people back where he's from. He probably wants to do so much for them but he knows he can't. He sees the deaths, poverty, gangbanging ect and everything happening and knows their's not much he can do but be an example. I think that's weighing heavy on him.. I feel for him. I can see pain all in his eyes.
Nadia AyoKunle he was depressed right after the album came out. After all, all his close friends and some family are still in compton and doing bad things etc. And some of his depression is shown in "U" with the glass clinks
SCHAMA NIGGA!!!!!!! FINISH THAT MIXTAPE BRUH
LMAO schama BRUH I swear I see you everywhere
I was so sad watching this i though kendrick was gonna burst into tears and the way he talks is just... I cant explain it people are going to look back at kendrick interviews they will get a vibe like they are watching pac interviews
Agreed!
Kendrick Lamar is brilliant. Hip Hip represents a form of narrative. It's primarily about speaking TRUTH to POWER. Let's keep this ball rolling
I love this interview so much , Kendrick is so genuine with his content
I’ve watched this entire interview hundreds of times back when it was first released. It’s 2020 and his words are still if not more than ever, relevant with what’s going on in America
He's so real . Everything about him , his presentation , the way he speaks and conveys his message ..its real . I want to keep watching more just to hear him speak bc he's so believable. People who can be real like him and true to heart and open like him..those are leaders. Those are the guys or women you look up to . Idk about all the critisism in this song because when I first heard it , I fell in love .Automatically I felt those emotions raging through me and at the end I felt the same way. No I havent lived no hard life or been put in situations dealing with gang banging , killing etc ..but I often asked the same questions and fustration at the end of the song . Anyway , one of my fav songs on the album and my fav rapper :)
Best interviewer ever man fr
Man you can see the struggle in his eyes talking about this stuff. I just wanna give him a hug.
The Grammys gon' pay for snubbing Kendrick's GKMC back in 2014. To Pimp a Butterfly gon' win Best Rap Album, even Album Of The Year im sure of it.
It will win and my fear is that the Grammys are gonna be idiots and snub him for Album of the Year.
too bad he didn't win video of the year in mtv awards Taylor swift won for bad blood after i saw t that i said FUCK THAT *deletes racist comments that would make white people mad* that was bullshit and i turned that and watched something more important
Insight is damn valuable. Videos like these make me understand Kendrick's music so much more.
When they were talking about his bet performance of alright on fox news, saying that it was in inciting violence it made me so angry. how could they take a song that supposed to give hope and uplift people and turn it into something hateful? and the woman saying it doesn't turn her on, since when police brutality is supposed to turn you on? smh

Kendrick is here for the younger generation for sure. I love how he is Positively using his power!
I love his personality and his voice is so calm, you can see the wisdom trough it and the honesty❤️❤️❤️
Rob this is amazing. Thank you.
To hear that a lot of Lamar's work comes from real life conversations makes his music deeper.
Kendrick looked at it from both angles. You can’t kill people you claim to have love for, and he’s also calling out the racial divide that still exists. He knows change starts from within, you can’t talk about others before making the change within yourself. Leading by example; a lot of us do a bunch of talking, and haven’t made a change within ourselves, dude was speaking from his own experiences, and just praying that will lead to change.
thank you for your honesty
gotta hand it to MTV this is a good interview. I'm always appreciative when interviewers actually try to get a bit of insight instead of trying to just get reaction or just vomit praise on them.
Kendrick is genius and well spoken love you Kendrick.
He's so beautiful. Good looking boy.
man ..thank you for you . The things about words and what you do is it is helping more than you know
dope interview
In my opinion Kendrick is more like Outkast than Nas. If you count Section 80 as his first album then that parallels well with Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik--an album that has a sound that's pretty specific to the places where the artists are from which displays their lyrical aptitude. ATLiens parallels well with Good Kid Maad City--a darker, more precise album than the first which really establishes the identity of the artists. Then Aquemini parallels well with TPAB--a much more ambitious record than the second album with nods to the history of black music (jazz, funk, rock, blues) while relaying important messages to black people. Could his next album be like a Stankonia?
What do you guys think?
100000% agree
Rappatiligoe0419 i dont think thats how it goes
Rappatiligoe0419 I think we try to compare artists too much. Outkast and Kendrick might be similar in some ways but Kendrick has his own sound and ideas for music that when we compare them I feel like that gets trivialized.
xJupy ***** I think you guys are misunderstanding the point of my comment. I'm just stating the similarities I see between the two acts, that doesn't mean that they aren't different. And I'm only saying this because Rob said that Kendrick is similar to Nas, so I stated that he's more similar to Outkast than Nas in my opinion.
Plus, if anything, being compared to Outkast is a compliment. I don't think being compared to anyone (especially people who were great at what they did) makes you a follower or trivializes your work, it's simply pointing out similarities. Especially when Kendrick and Outkast come from two different places--they're bound to create their own lanes.
Uhhh no...
Kendrick seems like such a cool guy
Kendrick you have a way with words that opens up my third eye not just to music but the world around me and I thank you for that feeling!..
Every time I watch one of his interviews I respect him even more.
Illmatic is one of the best records of all time and possibly the most impactful rap album from the golden age of Hip-Hop but "It Was Written" is Nas'es best album. I just felt that needed to be said.
Low key prophet
Such a great interview.
I love this guy. Respect!
Eye appreciate him voicing the fact that HE has contributed to the detriment of his own community. Anyone that thinks they haven't in SOME WAY is dillusional. Th-ankh u Kendrick for your honesty and integrity. Heartfelt interview❤

how he talks so passionately about his life's experiences and it's influence to his artistry is just amazimg
Who else is curious to hear that unreleased track that he says was even angrier than The Blacker the Berry?
It was the live version that made me fall in love with "I". I really wasn't feeling it in the studio version. I love how he set the stage for that song. This album really flows, he set them up perfectly!! This album is on serious rotation!!!
EXACTLY the album version is so much better

someone who takes the time to think what his words sound like before he speaks them. SO much love and respect Kendrick. You are an example of true humanity. I cry tears of joy to see people as pure as you getting into the shitty parts of the world to try and leave this world better for our grandkids. Peace
Yo, Kendrick wasnt the first to talk about the word NEGUS, listen to Capital STEEZ (RIP) song it is so great but it isnt noticed. He put it out there first
The whole Pro Era been using Negus
yup
Wilbert Seoane I know they have...but he is the first frontrunner to do it...especially in this era, where at a point in time all rappers talked about was b*s and bottles.
Wilbert Seoane its not a race to whos been saying what first. The credit goes where it goes man that's petty.
Wilbert Seoane Same with YC The Cynic with his song "Negus"
What I got from blacker the berry was we are killing are own for what.
@@gunarchy I went back and listen to it wit head phones on and I get it, but that last sentence says it the most. Why kill my own brother to be gangster.
@@StJello cause we were used as a tool, we come from hatred because of how we were mistreated. So that hatred develops into our communities and life because of poverty and institutionalized racism
True classic interview brother love and more blessings through it 🙏 🙌 🤎
Love this dude, I'm Malawian and i wish this man would do a concert here and all through Africa. Keep making music for the people Kendrick.
At 5:46, his eyes show some sort of negative emotion.
I noticed that too. Maybe it's because the interviewer said he really enjoyed the original i ??
I assumed that it was J.Cole Jr.'s praise as well.
cant see his eyes im watching at 140p
describe it
Prince Vegeta I don't think it was a negative look. It was somebody in the background.
what?
"It's funny how Zulu and Xhosa might go to war
Two tribal armies that want to build and destroy..."
That's south african History
He's so amazing
Best 3-4 years ever Kendrick's a beast and I love his music and enthusiasm and motivation in everything.
