How to sew an Adventure Tote

- Hey y'all and welcome to Sewspire! This week, in our sunshiny studio we are making An Adventure Tote. Like so many of my designs, this bag was born out of necessity.
September is always a busy month for our family as the children transition back into their school routines and our fall activities begin. As such, much of our time will be spent "on the run". To keep up with the fast pace and maintain my sanity, I create "An Adventure Bag" which has lots of healthy snacks, water and assorted activities to keep me entertained while I wait ever so patiently for this and that to wrap up. By the time winter rolls around, I will be ready to sit in a comfy seat and move at a more leisurely pace!
The exterior monogramming adds that extra special touch and can be substituted for an iron on monogram, hand embroidery or if you would prefer I can monogram a fabric panel especially for you! For more information on my custom embroidery offering, please visit www.sewspire.com
For this particular project you are going to precut the follow pattern pieces:
Two denim or twill pieces of material which measure 15" tall by 18" wide for the exterior body.
Two cotton quilt weight pieces of material which measure 15" tall by 18" wide for the interior body.
Two cotton quilt weight pieces of material which measure 6" tall by 18" wide for the exterior accent panel.
Two cotton quilt weight pieces of material which measure 22" long by 6" tall for the handles.
Four cotton quilt weight pieces of material which measure 9" tall by 18" wide for the interior pockets.
Plus two pieces of quilt batting which measure 3" x 22" for the handles and two pieces of quilt batting which measure 15" x 18" for the exterior body.
The finished bag measures approximately:
12" across the base
16" across the top
10.5" tall
5" deep
With double handles that have a *snug 8.5" drop
*I prefer short handles on my larger totes. If you need some additional wiggle room, simply lengthen the handle cuts to 6" x 30" for a roomy 12" drop.
I hope you enjoy the project and will share photos of your finished Adventure Totes with me! You can tag @sewspire on Instagram or post direct to our Facebook page. I will be back next week with another inspired project. Until then, sew happy my friends!
XO!
Andrea

My pleasure and thank you for watching!
Wow, what a difference the monogram makes. I'm going to have to make one of these bags :) Thank you so much for another wonderful tutorial. Your videos, tutorials are always so thorough and so easy to understand. Thanks Andrea :)
Hello my creative friend! The monograms really do add a special touch :)
I love your tutorials and the fact that you use a Janome sewing machine I own three absolutely love the machines.
Thank you Dianne! The Janome's are my favorites too!

Andrea, how do you determine the inch measurement for the depth sewing?
Great question! If using the fat corner method I add the desired depth to the desired height + 2" to get the cut height measurement. And add the desired width to the desired depth + 2" to get the cut width measurements.
very nice mam
Hi! @Sewspire I have been quilting now for about six years however recently got into bag and tote making. Your tutorials have been my go to videos for making totes... Now I just got an EMBROIDERY machine a week ago and don't know anything about them so the while stabilizer idea is making my brain all fuzzy.... In the video it looks like you have stabilizer on the back of your monogramming... Does that stay on, if so what kind is it? I can only find info on stabilizer that you either cut, tear or wash away. Any help is greatly appreciated......
Hello! I like to iron on Pellon 808 or 809. Works great!
@@Sewspire perfect!! Thank you... Heading over to order some now!!
One more question.... Do you iron it on before you start embroidering or after it's done? Thanks for such a quick reply by the way.... Your help is super appreciated!!!
Another fantastic video, Andrea!! Do you have a bag video that shows how to make a more rigid bottom? Thank you!--
Hmmm, I am not sure we've made a rigid bottom yet. I will add that to my list.
Thanks, Andrea! I'll look forward to it!
Can I use 💯 percent cotton instead of Jean fabrics?
You sure can!
(2:50) your facial expressions look exactly like Scarlett Johansson
Just discovered your brilliant tutorials xx but any chance you can show us all those bags hanging to the side of you :-)
Hello Kim and welcome to Sewspire! So glad you are here! Do you just want to see the bags? If so, I could easily do that. Or, did you mean teach you how to sew them? Which is also possible; but, would take some time.
for starters a video showing all the bags would be good then from there take requested on making them :-)
I can do that :)
I love your work BUT all begs r without zipper.... I want zipper in it.... plz tell us how can we add zipper to it...???
Like your tutorial but having a difficult time hearing it.
Hello Loretta! I have an external micro phone on my wish list for Sewspire...but, until we can get that, I am trying to adjust the volume on the edits. I am sorry I didn't get it right this time and will be sure to increase the volume level even more in the next video. Thank you for taking the time to let me know. I am happy to hear you are enjoying the channel and promise I will do better next time around. Until then, Happy Sewing my creative friend! XO! Andrea
