I played Ace Attorney for the first time on my IPad (only The First Turnabout and Turnabout Sisters were free) and I played Turnabout Sisters in one sitting (long ass car ride). I was SWEATING by the time I got White on the stand, and tbh I didn't really like Maya all that much. When I replayed it on my PS4 (I'm doing Recipe for Turnabout right now) it was Just. So. BORING. When I played through the rest of the first game, I realized just how... normal Turnabout Sisters is in perspective to the rest of the series. Redd White COULD'VE played a part in Turnabout Goodbyes, and that would've made this case worth it.

And prosecution win streaks are definitely a thing and they'll usually do whatever it takes to keep their streak going.

I have to raise an objection to your thoughts on Acro. He tried to kill Regina, not only because of a simple accident, but the damage that she did was too much for him. He's in a wheelchair because he anticipated the lion's bite and jumped off the trapeze in hope to save his brother, ultimately it costed him both of his legs permanently and he couldn't even save his brother in the process. Furthermore Russell had to shoot the lion even though it wasn't his fault, and after a full six months, Regina doesn't even seem to care. He gave Bat six months to wake up from his coma but Regina only made him feel worse each time he saw her.
Overall, Acro is by far the most remorseful villain in the series and you can't really blame him for doing it. Sure it wasn't a necessary move, but it wouldn't have been any worse than all the damaged she'd done to him prior. In conclusion, I felt bad when I had to convict him in the end.

I feel Tigre could have been a better villain and more believable if he used his money from his loan business to bribe people, he would still threaten people of course but this change woulds make him controlling the court more believable, and with this change it could change from him having a cardboard attorney badge to an actual replica that he bought, just make him rich from his business and all the problems are solved

He couldn't spend the money because of he still needed to recover from the medical bills. That's why he needed the 1 million. +Wafflecone69 for the assistant thing, I think that in Apollo Justice we have a similar case with Kristoph. what's more he is the very mentor of the main character, that then turns out to be a criminal and this may have been an emotionally strong outcome of events if only he wasn't found guilty immediatly in the first case; in that case it would have been totally different if the player had got the chance to grow found of him before and then found the truth out

    • @kirbystarwarior

@@bullymaguire8380 It's really not out of character. Redd's entire motive was to prevent the public from finding out about his blackmaiing and that he drove people to suicide. If the names of those people get released, there'd be investigations about them, which would tie them to the dealings with Redd White. Letting that information be public would go against the entire reason he killed Mia to begin with.

my main problem with the monstrous turnabout is that it does this thing that a lot of Ace Attorney cases do which is act like there might be something supernatural but it turns out that there was a perfectly mundane explanation. Like, in any other game, that would be fine, but this is a series where you can ask your dead boss for legal advice. I just want ONE case where they have to say in court, "Yes, Maya's fingerprints are on the knife, but that's only because a ghost took over her body and stabbed Mr. Victor Timms to death".

  • @JoeTheJRPGManiac
    @JoeTheJRPGManiac 8 років тому +91

Maybe I'm stupid for thinking this.. But Ace Attorney is the only series I can say is truly perfect in my eyes. Some cases aren't as great as others, but I can never say a single one is mediocre, well aside from one, which I will point out. I just want to say, this is my opinion, but I just felt the need to say it, because I can't agree with this list.
Turnabout Sisters? I acknowledge your issue with it, but I don't quite agree. Yes, I do think you should have been able to present the evidence and figure it out, which would have been nice to add as an option in the ports where 3D evidence could be done, so you could look on the back. I didn't really find Redd White underwhelming as a whole, because the way he starts to crack when brought into court is really satisfying, given he'd spent the second half of the case calling you worthless. Admittedly, there is some lost potential, which I'll mention later.
Monstrous Turnabout? Yeah, I can actually agree with some of your issues, though there's a bit more to each of the characters if you bother to take the time and dissect their dialogue, which is one of my favorite things to do with Ace Attorney. Getting to use Apollo's bracelet again was also really great, although the way it feels shoehorned in is really my biggest issue with Dual Destinies. Also, it is the second case in the game, so much like the first AA game, it's not surprising they show you the killer. After all DD was meant to be a bit more streamlines for new players, so I give that a pass.
Recipe for Turnabout is one of my favorite cases altogether. I actually really loved the villain, and the pseduo-abusive relationship between him and Viola is really interesting.
It finally managed to do what Turnabout Sisters didn't (The lost Potential). Redd White should have been able to bring in witnesses who would have to lie out of fear of being blackmailed, and make it interesting in that you might end up finishing a day in court where you're being completely misled because of it. Having the main witnesses under Furio Tigre's control made it much more interesting. I actually enjoyed the only press one statement thing, and didn't find it too difficult. Much like other Ace Attorney cases, you press on the one that is either most damaging, or conflicts with earlier testimony.
Turnabout Serenade? Another one of my favorite cases. Having to point out flaws in music and video was interesting. I loved the characters, even if Daryan was obviously the murderer. The reason Valant was an asshole isn't really explained until later, which I'll give you, though it makes the game as a whole stand stronger for the character developing throughout the story, instead of being a one off character, which kept this case from being filler.
Turnabout Big Top? Yeah. Not arguing. I don't think the case is as bad as some people do. No, he didn't want to kill her for not taking the incident seriously. He wanted to kill her, because she was the one who instigated the incident. And there are some times that Moe is actually really remorseful, talking about all the things the victim had done for them all. But everything else I agree with. Moe is annoying most of the time, as are all the other NPCs, especially your defendant.

Turnabout Big Top is actually one of my favorites. *blush*
I actually really thought they went into the remorse, personally. I actually liked the dynamics between the characters near the end, and I found the characters funny, really. I suppose it's a matter of preference, but doesn't it kind of make sense that a group of circus performers would be trying to entertain all the time?
I actually also really liked Regina's innocence, showing that while innocence makes you happy, it's also harmful if it's all you know. I like that Moe was really just trying to keep up appearances, I like that Max wasn't happy unless they were aiming for the top.
I REALLY liked that case, but I can still understand why people might find it annoying. Not as many people have my sense of humor, I guess.

I can see how you would despise 3-3. I love it, personally. iirc it was established that at least Godot knew that Phoenix was being impersonated, and considering that he was the only person to not flinch at all when dealing with Tigre while literally everyone else was cowering in terror, it would definitely make sense if at least the Judge and Bailiffs were intimidated into "believing" it was Wright. Same thing goes for everyone deciding Phoenix is full of shit until literally the end of the case. Doesn't really stitch the wound but it at least tries to tourniquet it.

I'm fully with you on how absurd it is that Machi was accused of all of that, however the purpose of the case is to demonstrate the whole "once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains must be the truth" thing. Of everyone involved, Machi was the only person who could've been done it at the perceived time, because the Gavinners were on stage, Lamiroir couldn't fit through the vent, Trucy was in the crowd, and Apollo and Ema had alibis in that they were talking to each other while it happened in the next room over. However, I will admit that it would honestly make more sense at that point to assume it was done by some deranged fan, or Apollo and Ema had teamed up and were covering for each other than to assume that Machi did.

In all fairness, the motive for Turnabout Big Top is sound. Acro basically tried to kill a spoiled brat who almost killed his brother and ruined both of their careers all for a prank, AND she didn't even acknowledge that she did anything wrong.

I never read Regina as a "spoiled brat". In fact, I personally read the case as implying that Regina has some form of developmental disorder. I mean, she doesn't act like someone who's a bit out of touch and doesn't understand the outside world very well. She acts more like a literal child. Phoenix even at one point questions if everything is "all right" with her in a situation where she doesn't seem to be emotional.

I feel like the argument for T&T not having much impact on the series afterwards compared to the first game is because it’s a trilogy.
The original game stands on its own due to its expectation as a standalone game
Justice for All builds off of the original game with the developers having knowledge a third game was going to occur. Therefore they could set up for T&T
T&T was only followed up 3 years later by a game set 7 years after it with a new cast, and the second trilogy appears to follow a rule that they can’t follow up on characters or plot points from prior games for newer fans

Serenade is so unbelievably frustrating because it has some really fun ideas. I like that Lamiroir is supposedly helping a blind kid but it actually being the opposite, I like that you have to pinpoint something suspicious in songs by breaking down each instrument, and I like that the defendant isn’t completely innocent and has to be charged with a different crime. But that’s only a sliver in a case that has to repeat itself constantly. The millisecond you solve everything, they bring up something already debunked and you have to cross examine again just to reiterate something that you finished explaining just before that. How could Lamiroir witness the crime if she can’t see? She heard a gunshot, and this proves it. Okay but what about the guitar on fire? You can see that it was planned, listen to this piano. I understand that but what about Lamiroir? She heard the gunshots? How? And so on

An Ace Attorney countdown, eh? I've made a couple of those.#5- I thought this was a pretty good case. Wouldn't make in it my Top 20, but would be somewhere in the 25 - 21 range. But this was a good case because 1 it introduced Maya, 2 it shows off the powers of the Kurain Channeling Technique, and 3 it shows why Mia became a Defense Attorney. Though Redd White is a pretty lousy villain mainly because he's built up to be this powerful guy, but he's taken down pretty easily for someone of that power. Besides, Turnabout Samurai was worse than this imo.#4- Eh, Cosmic Turnabout was worse imo, also, the 1st case introduced Athena, not this one. But you were probably trying to say it's the 1st case she was in chronologically. But you complaining about the killer being revealed at the beginning is odd since they've done it before, but I don't recall you saying anything about that. Redd White was done the same way, but you never said anything about him being revealed at the beginning is what I'm saying.#3- I personally loved this case BECAUSE of how stupid it was. I mean, I didn't mind doing all that stuff you said was a problem, and I just really enjoyed the characters in it because of the quirkiness they had. It was filler, but it kept me pretty entertained. Though, this case did establish Godot's inability to see red on a white background. Sure, they could have just done something with what they did in Case 5, but it also manages to develop Godot as a character some. Red on white thing, his ability to stay incredibly calm with a raging tiger, things like that. #2- I'll have to agree somewhat. The concept was kinda dumb, quite a few inconsistencies, but Daryan Crescene was a pretty good villain. The thing that saved this case from being the absolute worst case in Apollo Justice and possibly the series. He can't compete with Kristoph Gavin, no, but he's much better than Alita Tiala. But you shouldn't complain about him acting like a villain mid-case when others have done it.#1- I personally really don't hate this case. I guess I can get behind what you're saying, but I still like this case because, again, the quirks. Ben and Trilo where incredibly funny, Moe was there to deliver the bad jokes, and Acro, he deserves all the sympathy he should get. Like you said, what he did was an accident, and he meant to kill someone else. But, you still feel sorry for him because of all the shit he's been through. It's probably my least favorite case in the game, but again, I don't hate it like everyone else.Overall, this countdown was pretty good, a few things I'd work on, like wording yourself better. But still pretty alright. And I'd definitely like to see what your favorite cases are, and see if they measure up to mine. 'cuz my ace attorney opinion is the only ace attorney opinion 'cuz I did ace attorney month.

#5. Yeah, since I like all the cases in the first game, it just came down to a matter of "Which am I the most indifferent towards?" That's kinda the problem with doing the 1 per game rule. I enjoyed Turnabout Samurai just a little more cause it was the first case that didn't feel super hand holding to me and I appreciated that. Basically Turnabout Sisters is fine, but I like the other ones in the game by just a bit.
#4. Yeah I definitely could have worded a lot of this entry better. I DID mean it was the first to introduce her chronologically. Also I wasn't necessarily trying to say revealing the killer at the beginning was bad. I was trying to say that knowing the mystery already is a pain when the investigations already feel more tedious then usual.
#3. You're definitely not the only one who feels that way about the case, so by all means have fun with it if it works for you ^-^ Every bone you've given it is valid, but for me personally, the whole thing was just frustrating.
#2. I still think this case is WAY worse then all the other ones in AJ. And I know other cases have had villains act evil mid-way, but with others, it seemed like they could at least manipulate the scene or people enough to pass themselves off as innocent. As opposed to Daryan who pretty much has all the evidence point to him, and yet the story needs to phone in a reason to almost let him go anyway. What I'm saying is I don't like how transparently guilty he makes himself.
#1. Moe annoyed me and I couldn't stand Ben and Trilo, personally XD But that's just all taste. As for Acro, I'll admit I came across as way too unsympathetic. I do feel genuine sympathy given his circumstance. I just don't sympathize with his motivation for murder (which I guess is inteded). Either way, I admit I was too harsh on the guy.

We've got the infuriating handicap against Moe, Ben and Trilo being super vague on the stand, Acro going way overboard (any sane person would've screamed at Regina and then called her dad over to talk/yell about treating death and mortality more seriously), and enough ways to get penalized to make Nick's head spin.

At least the Ace Attorney anime actually did a really good job covering Turnabout Big Top. I honestly liked the original case (I'm a sucker for a good circus theme, along with colorful characters metaphorical and literal) but I think they improved it a lot. By trimming down the more tedious moments they made room for more serious character moments, with special mention to the way they handled the final day in court. If you disliked the case in the game, I recommend watching the episodes to see the case done right.

    1. Fully disagree... The case was actually cleverly put together... as the characters were very anti-social and awkward, it became very hard to discern who could've killed the victim. But when the accident was revealed about Bat, and Acro basically became appointed murderer by Phoenix immediately (as should be obvious), there was still no logical explanation of how he could've killed the victim, which was clever, because usually the method of killing is clear in just a few observations. I feel the characters were purposely annoying to throw you off, and the murderer was a lot more relate-able then any other murderer thus far in the series, to the point that a lot of murderers just felt really generic in comparison. I might be weird, but I feel that case is actually one of the BEST cases in the series... :-P

I really liked the premise and the twists of Turbabout Big Top, what bugged me was the plot holes. The murder method was so horribly unreliable. And by that I don't mean that I disliked that the wrong person was killed, I agree with the video and thought that was an interesting deviation from the usual themes. Acro couldn't see what he was doing while committing the murder, which is why he didn't notice it was the ringmaster instead of Regina. Cool. But then how did he know exactly when to drop the bust? Even if (by stretching reality to its limits already) we assume he could tell by the "sounds" of trying to lift the box, whatever the hell that means, he couldn't even know if the person's head would be in the exact right spot. They could be in a different position, drag it from the side instead of lifting it. Even by just leaning slightly to one side they could only get scraped instead of hit dead on. It was such an unreliable method, it would have led to failure in 90% of cases, which would then lead to Acro most definitely getting caught right away. Not to mention the cape somehow getting snagged on the bust perfectly. Having played all of the ace attorney games, I am very much willing to accept some level of absurdity, but I feel like this case pushed it a bit too much. Still, I wouldn't call it the worst case personally.

Point taken, though the fact that they hire Apollo to get the defendant acquitted and then turn back on that on day two and try to get them found guilty was so suspicious and really ruined the tension of the remainder of the case. Before then, I didn't even really suspect the guilty party, but after that sudden turn, it just became obvious - same reason why Wambu doesn't like PSM, since he just halts your investigation out of nowhere because he's totally not the killer.

@@DementedDuskull You're missing the point. They didn't want the defendant acquitted, they wanted the defendant found guilty, and they hired apollo because they thought he would perform poorly and the verdict would indeed be guilty. Kinda like Tigre pretending to be the attorney so Maggey would be found guilty

Recipe for Turnabout reminds of both Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure 2 in the way that both Mario and Sonic were also mistaken for culprits who look absolutely nothing like them and yet they still receive some form of consequence for their evil counterpart's actions. Mario is arrested and sentenced to clean up the entire island on his own and Sonic is forced to go on the run from the military police until he clears his name. And now we have someone who somehow managed to impersonate Phoenix despite looking absolutely NOTHING like him all because he wore a blue suit and had a paper badge.
And what's even more cringy is that characters constantly act as if it was still Phoenix despite them already knowing that the one of the last case was a phony such your own freaking client (Maggey) and even Maya. It made the case pretty painful to play for me. I know it was suppose to be some kind of recurring joke throughout the case, but it just made them look really stupid and incompetent.

I absolutely hated Recipe for Turnabout. In addition to the reasons already mentioned in the video, the case ends with Phoenix bluffing information about an evidence to Tigre only by PURE LUCK that he would be fooled into talking about how the actual thing containing the poison looked like. It's such a weak and meaning "revelation".
Also, the suspense music plays at all the wrong moments, especially in that case. It's gotten me easily desensitized from what could be one of the most intense themes in the series because that thing would keep on playing when things get advantageous for Phoenix. The episode would have been so intriguing due to the Xin Eohp plot, but it's executed so poorly

Quite literally finished your number one an hour before this was uploaded. I personally liked a lot of the twists it had, how you know the last character introduced will be the killer, yet he comes off as the only sane and calm one(the *birds*), and I did end up empathizing with the plight of a man in his position: that is, blaming someone who wasn't responsible by their intention, but by nature, and spending months in depression extended by his personal disability. Just the image of him rolling around in his room, oof. I even liked Moe since he didn't waste too much time before it became obvious he'd be stepping up in the group.
I guess I'm bias right now, what with no time to process and the fact that the ending has me hyped for the game's final case (EDGEWORTH!!), but yeah. I enjoyed what I saw, how you presented yourself, and one day, I'll come back and see what I skipped over. . . which was most, depressingly enough.

The criticism for Turnabout Serenade is totally valid! But, I think the reason I ended up actually enjoying it more than the case before it was because the nature of the crime was so unique, and a lot of the cast was really likable. We get some humanization on Klavier's part, meet Lamiroir and Machi, see a concert. Heck, there's even some character development for Apollo, fighting tooth and nail against an unjust court system to uphold Mr. LeTouse's dying wish. Watching the video over and over again can be repetitive, but I don't think it's nearly as frustrating in Turnabout Serenade than it is in Rise from the Ashes. My biggest gripes are with Daryan, who was the obvious culprit and just a bad character altogether, and the police arresting a literal child who they believed to be blind for committing the murder based on circumstantial evidence that is pretty quickly proven to be faulty in court. But, I dunno, maybe I'm the crazy one lol

I'd like to believe that Turnabout Serenade was a statement on how in that particular case, common sense and logic had vanished from the courtroom; it not only showed the Judge's incompetence, but also his predispositioned bias to the prosecution. Just like in real life, sometimes...
