  • This video relates to the machines mentioned in the title and for punch card machine knitting.
    it is a very basic simple tutorial for beginners to get started on a knitting machine, in order to see how the machine knits and how the punch card works.
    For more detailed knitting, please join a machine knitters Facebook Page for more assistance.
    Example.
    Australian machine knitting
    Machine Knitting Network Australia New Zealand
    Machine Knitting
    .........and so many more to choose from
    For knitting machine sales, there are Facebook Sales groups to get you started.
    Example
    Australian Machine knitting sales
    knitting machine sales
    .........many others available
    There are many people available to help you with your machine knitting in these groups.
    The machine I was using in this video is a Singer 322
    The punch card used was from the standard punch card. it's punch cards that I have made using a Brother Scan and cut machine.
    PLEASE NOTE: you cannot use the Brother scan and cut for scanning the original punchcard and expect the machine to duplicate the punch card. It will not work. There is a process in order to do this which involves time and patience.
    I hope you find this video helpful.
    Thanks to my daughter, 14 year old Jasmine, for taking the video in order to help others.

    Please do lots more! I’ve seen a few tutorials on the silver reed on youtube but none have been as easy and straightforward to understand as yours. I gave up and put my machine away but after seeing this tutorial, i’m excited to take it out and try again. Would be great if you could show how to knit sock/jumpers etc and the different stitch functions on the dial.

      Thanks Jon. When I first started machine knitting about 7 years ago, I battled so much with trying to learn how to cast on. It took ages and a lot of frustration to get it right. I have been criticized for using a Brother cast on comb for a Singer machine however the Singer Cast on method it not the easiest method I've found. I wanted to get people up and running as quickly as possible, to be able to enjoy machine knitting and to see how easy it can be to knit. I did this video mainly because I sold a knitting machine to someone in another city and it was so they could watch and follow at the same time. Since then I have repaired and sold a number of Singer punch card machines and have included a Brother Cast on comb with each machine and refer them to the UA-cam video to get started :)

      @@susanglaus4312 You're very welcome. I purchased all of my used machines online (except for the LK 150, the plastic bed, manual midgauge) and was very lucky that all were complete and worked with just minor tweaking. I also added the Brother, standard gauge, cast on comb, since it looked like a very useful tool. It sure is. Keep up the good work and the demos, as they are much appreciated.

  • @lauragoodrich5618
    @lauragoodrich5618 3 роки тому

    Great video! I have been cleaning up a 321. It is a great, sturdy machine. I have been successful getting it to tuck and slip, but whenever I try fairisle, the main color does not knit off properly. The colors don’t switch on the main side of the fabric. If I look at the needles while knitting, some needles have two stitches on them instead of the single stitch they should have. I am going to try again with your video, but I think I have done everything just as you have. I have also cleaned the carriage and made sure the flippers are moving like they should and installed new spongebars. In addition, I have cleaned old fiber out of the bed of the machine and from the “towers” on the carriage. I would be thrilled if you had some advice. I am mostly familiar with Brother machines, so I am hoping that I have just missed something stupid.

    • @susanglaus4312
      @susanglaus4312  3 роки тому

      Hi Laura, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, it's been a hectic week. The only thing I can think of with 2 stitches on the same needle is that you need extra weight on your knitting? Are all the levers on the side and front of the carriage in the correct positions? The "towers" you mentioned, are the drums and they help with patterning. With the carriage off the bed, do the drums spin freely/easily? Let me know if you managed to sort the issue out. Happy knitting :)

    • @susanglaus4312

      Those items are used with motifs however you could still knit using the punch card, it just means to will have lots of the same picture all over your garment. I am in the process of loading files for people to download and 3d print knitting machine parts. Therefore if you haven't got these parts and have a 3d printer available. (We have 3d printers at our local public library.) You would be able to download and print the parts you need or alternatively purchase off Ebay. The site I have been uploading 3d printable files to is called Thingiverse. My username is SuziePerth. Best is to subscribe there and everytime I upload a knitting machine part for 3d printing you will be notified. Hope this helps?

    • @susanglaus4312
      @susanglaus4312  3 роки тому +4

      It's because you are using different colour yarns and 1 yarn might end before the knitted edge and when you pull the needle forward it will catch/knit the yarn to give it a neat edge.

    @dmvelez9430 2 роки тому +1

    I hope you can help with this question - I have the Singer model 700 which is very similar to the one you demonstrate in this video. I have checked the control settings in the manual so many times I can't count, but for the life of me I can't get the machine/needles to pick up the second color yarn for Fair Isle. I've done everything as you have, making sure I'm using the slot in the yarn feed for the 2nd color of yarn. Our carriages look very similar - you make it look so easy! I have absolutely no idea why it's not working. If you have ideas, I would love to hear them! I cannot find any videos that discuss this particular issue. Plenty about loops and missed stitches, but none about why the yarn isn't being picked up. I'd actually be happy for loops at this point! :)

      I have the Singer 700 and will do a quick video and upload this evening after work. Have you oiled your carriage so all the little flippers underneath move easily? Do all the dials on top of your carriage move easily? If you are subscribed to mt channel you should get notified when I upload the video.

      @@susanglaus4312 Thank you and Greetings from the mid-western United States!! I'm subscribed now....love your videos! I am new to machine knitting with real (not plastic) machines and am making good use of all the videos on UA-cam- I had used a spray lubricant called LPS1 that helps unstick old oil (cleaning it) and lubricating it at the same time and as far as I knew the carriage was operating properly. The dials were hard to turn before I did that, then much better after. I cleaned/lubed all the moving parts underneath and they appeared to be moving properly. However, it is possible that something was still sticking/not operating correctly that I do not know about since I'm not familiar with all the workings, so I dismantled it (removed plastic pieces only) and am soaking the carriage in "Marvel Mystery Oil" to help clean out any old, solidified oil I can't see. I'm giving it a good soak of several days, then after I will clean it thoroughly and try again. This is an old machine that belonged to my mother-in-law, barely used if at all and sat for probably 40 years. I've given it so much cleaning, even filing rust off all the needles! If you'd like to do a more detailed video on the operations of that particular machine in Fair Isle I would love it! I inherited the ribber for that machine as well....so much to learn.

      @@susanglaus4312 Good News! After a good soak and cleaning, my carriage is now operating properly and can knit Fair Isle! Apparently the problem, unbeknownst to me, was not the 2nd yarn but the carriage parts not engaging properly when I switched it to the Fair Isle setting. It works now! However, if you'd like to do any videos with the Singer 700, I for one would love to learn anything you'd like to share! Especially interested in using the ribber with it to knit a large panel and also how to knit a circle. Thank you so much for your videos!

    i have just been given this machine ,it looks great but the wheels on the under carriage are preventing the carriage from sliding across ,they are not moving so guessing they might just need cleaning im assuming it needs cleaning ,how do i access the wheels please help me , xx

    • @susanglaus4312
      @susanglaus4312  3 роки тому

      There are some very good UA-cam videos that show you how to strip the carriage and clean it. It's not too difficult to do. It's always best to take photos as you strip the carriage down. Keep a small container nearby for screws that you take off. Each carriage is slightly different when taking apart. The wheels need to spin freely. Yarn often gets wrapped around the wheels causing them to become hard to move. Perhaps the carriage may never have been stripped and cleaned before. This video was very clear. I’m very interested in getting a machine, but I’m not sure how to even go about choosing. I’ve been knitting, and crocheting by hand, but would love to figure out which machine to get. Any advice on how I should go about deciding on one?

    • @susanglaus4312
      @susanglaus4312  3 роки тому

      1. Decide on what you would like to knit with the machine
      2. What's your budget
      3. Join a machine knitting Facebook Group and ask them for advice as there are so many different types of machines.
      4. Push buttons, punch card and electronic machines are available and up to you as to how easy/difficult the machine can be to learn.
      5. Do you want to knit lace? Summer lace tops. Not all machines come with lace carriages.
      6. Some machine brands come with lots of accessories
      7. Choice between plastic or metal bed. I prefer metal bed as it's stronger
      8. Size of knitting stitch. You get fine, standard and chunky knitting machines. Start with a standard 4.5mm as there are many available.
      9. New or second hand. There are some new plastic beds on the market however people have not been that happy with them. Purchase a steel bed one and preferably one that's been serviced so you can knit straight away.
      Pricing ranges from Free, as the machines need to be stripped down, cleaned up and oiled. Singer or Brother punch card machines, depending on the model can sell from $100 depending if all the accessories are with the machine. Most knitting machine manuals are now available free online.
      I hope this helps you :)

      It's to make different types of stitches (A different pattern). The best is to search on Google " Knitting machine tuck stitch pictures" and you'll be able to see the type of stitches you'll be able to make with your machine. Certain punch cards (that may have come with your machine) are only for tuck stitch. Look up the other types of stitches on google to see that they can do.

      Whereabouts are you in the world? You can purchase a set of 20 cards from China for around AUD$25 or if you have an electronic craft cutter you can cut your own. I use a Brother scan and cut machine, but you can use a Silhoutte or Cricut machine. There is info on UA-cam how to do that and a Facebook group I have uploaded files you use with your cutting machine. Website AliExpress. Check it out!
