This tutorial has really helped me. I have just been bought this for my 60th birthday today. I have been hankering after a knitting machine for years and especially recently as my hands get sore after a couple of hours hand knitting. I remember sitting watching my Nana using her machine in the 70s and being mesmerised. I will look at your other videos for more advice, Thank you.
The LK150 is used by a number of knitwear designers such as Susan Guagliumi who has written a number of books about hand manipulated stitches and has a DVD about the LK 150 as well as a UA-cam channel. The Machine Knitting Monthly always has patterns for LK 150.
The yellow ruler is for measuring swatches. Silver Reed made 3 rulers one for each gauge, the other two are blue & green. They're supposed to be faster/more accurate way of determining gauge than using a plain ruler, YMMV.
About 60 years ago, my father bought my mother an incredibly expensive knitting machine - probably one of the first made - but the store he bought it from went bankrupt immediately afterward so my mother was never able to take the class required to use it. The poor thing sat around for years and was finally thrown away. I've always been intrigued by the idea, though, and have wondered if one would be fun to have. I'm left handed, and tend to get things turned around when I try to knit by hand! Thank you so much for this and other tutorials. It gives me confidence, and I think I'll start saving up for one.
Thanks for the video I brought this machine a few years ago off of Ebay the carriage was damaged, not knowing much about this machine I threw it in a closet, but watching your video I dug it out and brought a new carriage from Amazon. I made my first swatch, yay Thank you.
I am a hand knitter and thought "how hard can it be to machine knit?". I got a brother standard gauge to learn on and there was quite a learning curve. I was always wanting yarn and could only find it on line. I do love what it can do with the card reader and finger weight yarn. But sometimes you just want to go to the store and grab some yarn for a quick project so I bought the LK150 second hand. All the parts were there in plastic bags. The only thing I had to do was replace the sponge bar that disintegrated. So far I have done some holiday crafts, pumpkins and gnomes.
Thank you for keeping this skill alive! I used Brother knitting machine about 35 years ago. Was a lot of fun. Then study, work, career, all the boring stuff LOL All those years I was dreaming of having knitting machine again. Just bought Silver Reed SK 840. It's standard gauge machine. It's so wonderful to spend my days learning. Love your videos.
Thank you so much for this unboxing and tutorial. I’m 67 years old and contemplating on buying a second hand knitting machine but after doing some research on all the kinds available nowadays, I’ve decided that in the end, it’s more efficient and practical to spend on a new one instead. This way it’s guaranteed that all parts are intact or replaceable and new technology available on these units are up to date. Watching your video about LK150 confirms that idea. Please post more videos on this model and techniques in using this… you’ve earned a new subscriber 🙏🏻
Thank you for doing a beginner level series!! I purchased a vintage Singer about 6 years ago and it is still in the box. I only paid $50 for it and it has a lot of the punched patterns, but I have no idea how to do any of that. I have been hand knitting for over 30 years and recently started with circular knitting machines. It would be nice to attempt to try my Singer out, but after watching a couple of other videos on used machines, I’m sure it will need some new parts and cleaning. You are very sweet and your technical knowledge puts most of us older folks to shame. But, we are never too old to learn new things LOL!
Certainly not a dying hobby as people realise they joy of machine knitting and all the knitting groups on Facebook welcome dozens of members daily. There are so many knitters around the world and the second hand market for machines and accessories is booming. I have enjoyed machine knitting since about 1982 and as now retired I can spend more time enjoying making my own stuff that actually fits knowing it hasn’t come from a sweat factory 🙂
I’ve had my lk150 for a few years. It was a $40 yard sale find. All it needed was a sponge bar- it even came with the original vhs tape 😂 I’ve made sweaters, scarves, ear warmers, wraps fingerless mitts and hats. I’m in Canada so cold weather accessories are always welcomed! I lucked out and found an inexpensive fc6 carriage for mine but haven’t played with it yet.
Ahhh! Omg, I’ve been following you for a long time now and I’ve been wanting to buy this machine ever since I saw your “how to but a knitting machine” video. I’m so happy you made a video about it! I can’t wait to get one I’ve been so fascinated by machine knitting for so long.
I have SK-160, it's the 860 bed without the electronics :( . It's pretty much an all metal LK-150. I'd love an LK but, it's hard to justify when I have a Brother plastic bed.
@@yarnfanatic The 355 is basically an LK-150 with built in Intarsia. I know it has fewer needles but, that extra .5mm needle spacing opens up a lot of #4 yarns that the 6.5mm's struggle with.
@@raycreveling1583, I had a KX-350 I picked up for $20 on FB marketplace. I loved that it had more needles. I have a good friend (fiber artist) who took up an interest in machine knitting and I sold it to her.
I am so glad to see you working on an LK150. I didn't know that you recommended it as beginner machine, but I just bought one for that very reason! So far I have made a few swatches and one hat that turned out a bit too big (self drafted the pattern after watching a few UA-cam videos...) The issue was not that the gauge was off, but that I seriously overestimated the size I needed (and also made a MAJOR miscalculation on the length but that was all on me! And easy enough to fix by ripping out the extraneous rows!) I am a long time handknitter so I'm hoping I can put my pattern writing skills to use on the LK150. I do think the best way to learn is to just try something! Looking forward to seeing what you do with this machine!
I had a knitting machine 40 years ago. They went out of fashion as did the expensive cones of yarns that you bought for them. Its nice to know they are coming back into use
I buy really cheap but super soft yarn and use one of the basic patterns out of the manual to make infinity scarves with my LK-150. I've made other things but mostly just scarves and I've never used that yellow ruler. But I do need more claw weights, so TY for the link!

I just bought an LK150 a few weeks ago. I allready started knitting a sweater and using the tuckstitch. Its far from perfect, but i learn the best from making mistakes.
my machine is a Necchi/ empisal 260. my very first... still figuring out things every time I use her 🤣 still haven't done a sweater out of her but i'm on my way 🫠🤣
I just unboxed my new LK150 and I am so excited! I am going to follow your tutorial today to set it up. I opened the box a few weeks ago and was so intimidated by all the pieces, I have waited to find more information to assist me with set up.
I love love love my LK150. I wish there were more patterns for it, but I mostly use it to complete the stockinette portions of hand-knit sweaters I'm making.
Same here, though once you have made a gauge swatch you will find that many hand knit patterns will work. Ann Budd's Handy Book of Knitting patterns and Melissa Leapman's 6, 000 Pullover Possibilities give you some basic knitwear patterns based on gauge and Shirley Paden's wonderful Knitwear Design Workshop book is good for if you want to get into designing more complex shapes based on your own measurements - all of these books work for both machine and hand knitting, though they were written mainly with hand knitting in mind. I recently made the stocking stitch parts of Kate Davies Puffin sweater on my LK 150, which was my first sweater project on it and it worked well . I have one and I've been trying to make things on it for the longest I was successful with a mitten and I failed with a sweater. I would really be happy if you were able to do a lesson on it. I love watching all your videos.
Thank you very much! This is very helpful. I've been interested in knitting, but I've struggled with hand knitting. I think this is going to be a lot more fun for me.
the ruler is for guage. 60 on one side and 40 on the other. after blocking your swatch measure the width of the swatch with the side for your sts to get the guage. lots of sts and small size = higher count and few sts with wide fabric = lower count.
I bought an ultimate sweater machine at Michaels several years ago, but it got dropped during a move and I could never get it working again. This one's a much higher price point but it's WAY nicer. I might have to invest in one.
Thank you for this video. It’s good to see what the machine is like as no physical stores seem to sell them or even have them on display. I’m not a beginner, I owned a SK280 & ribber but had to sell it a few years ago 😢 I’d love to buy a new one but they are more than double the price of a new LK150, even second hand ones 😮 This looks decent enough to create something wearable and will be cheaper to use as coned 4 ply yarn is pretty expensive. Reminds me of the Bond Classic I had when I was younger. I need to learn the hand manipulation techniques.
Im brand new to the concept of machine knitting, my eyes were opened from another youtuber! Of course I wanted to start out with a beast but then it'll probably end up being a beast to get started aswell. I had looked on amazon and saw thus machine and the word "plastic" turned me off so I started looking for only vintage. Like I said, it would probably be a beast to get started with vintage so I mught actually start with this. Its from Amazon so it can be returned if I dont like it. Thanks for showing us this.
if you find knittax/knitking (AM3 or anything similar) go for that. Silver reed is crap compared to what used to be for sale 50yrs ago. LK150 is plastic but quite good, but the concept how it works and the pulling comb is just bad. Much better to have something with sinkers instead of pulling comb but if it has to be only comb, than at least it should have normal comb, these combs that come with LK150 are pure scam, being only for every second space..
Thx for lesson ... I owmed a cardo matic with cards but was damaged with moving and got this LK 150 and LK 100 ...and now must decide if I want to go back to this hobby or stay with sewing .... people tend to get rid of their machines and I end uo with them... I do have a PB 8 to but never learned to use it... I must scale down and decide what to keep!! ...enjoy it
Been contemplating getting a knitting machine, however I don't want to buy a used one since I'm certain that repairs and restoration in NOT for me, but knew machines are a little out of my price range, however this one might actually be doable with a little saving, so I would love at watch a complete beginner series on this.
The rulers are for knitting gauge. You can also get pattern readers which is why you have the different rulers for different gauges. You get an electronic row counter which works with an electronic pattern reader.
if there was a machine like the lk150 with the possibility of using punchcards or digital patterning, that would be the best machine in the world. i love the easy of the lk150, it is like a toy machine in the best possible way. it is aestheticaly beautiful as well
Look up the needle beetle by Kris Krafter. You can do 8 stitch repeats like a push button machine. It's not a full punchcard system it's a nice compromise though.
I'm buying one of these, but brand new, like you, because of the same reasons you said, meaning that pieces can get lost!! I found this exact one for 480 euros brand new, so I'm trying to save up for this one!! (Which is kind of hard, since I'm on disability leave) but I have saved for a few months already!
This is my first day watching your UA-cam channel n my first sight of a knitting machine ... Wowww ... Getting more n more interesting ... Thank you for sharing. Subscribed and learning more before i get machine.
Interesting, thanks for the video. This is the first one on machine knitting I've watched. I'm a coder who's messed around a bit with arduinos, as well as a knitter, so the idea of being able to code something complex and reproducible in an organic tactile form really appeals to me. The limiter for me is time and money but we shall see! Subscribing and hoping you have really gone into the guts of your vintage machines!
Hello I found a video named LK 150 Knitting Machine, oploaded by a lady Tanja ❤ P . But it was a video done by mrs,Gulliani. On UA-cam it was realy good . But long . 😊
You attached an Arduino to a vintage brother knitting machine?!?! That is amazing!!! 🎉❤ ive always wanted to use a knitting machine and automate it, but i never knew where to start, but I'm so glad to have stumbled on your channel 😊
Hi ! I've just purchased a vintage knitting machine and I would love some very simple tutorials to practice ! The brand's machine is Erka, it has a double bed but it's an unusual kind of machine. There isn't a "fisher", the yarn has to be raveled on the machine (in so small amounts 😅). The LK 150 looks nice but not afordable for me right now. Thanks for sharing your video 😊
I am really interested to learn machine knitting with these kind of machine. I'm a bit hesistant. A few years ago I bought a knitting machine and went 3 years to evening school to learn the craft, but it is not my cup of tea. Last year I picked up knitting, and I love it. I love to make sweaters but it takes a long time to knit one. So maybe a knitting machine is a solution for me? I'm going to watch your tutorials. You explain it so good! Thank you!
"this is a nice little mashine" ...yeah def..i wouldnt even have any spot where to place n work with that xD thanks for sharing tho its interesting to see whats possible and what tools r out there for such crafts
Love my Brother kx350, almost the same machine by functions (missing plating option and only has 130 needles with opportunity to extend it if purchase one more machine and combine it together) one huge benefit is possibility to pay way less than lk150. Though currently I am into fine guage machine brother kh110.
the ruler is a swatch measure. 60 sts on one side and 40 sts on the other. depending on the swatch sts use the appropiate side.the wider the swatch the fewer the sts per inch. a narrow 60 sts will have lots of sts per inch a wide 60 sts will have fewer st per inch. the other numbers give different gauge stitches.
I'm here because I'm interested in automating a knitting machine like this. Sort of a 3d printer for knitting. Probably will never finish it, but with arduinos, raspberry pies, and even servos so cheap, the time is now
Hello, Like your piano. ☺☺ Wonder if it would be possible to fix a steel plate to the underside of the machine to stop it buckling? It gets nice and warm in my part of the world. Like your presentation. Mine should be with me in a few weeks from China. Thanks for such a great video. JennyB
I wonder if I could use red heart super saver to practice with or even after I know what I'm doing. I would like to use the red heart yarn to make dog sweaters.I mostly use knit picks yarn, but not for my dogs. By the way I love that you are making these videos, I'm watching them while I wait for my machine to be shipped.
Would you ever consider making a video on how you code your patterns? I am a front end developer with a knitting machine so I don't know python super well, but started trying to code my patterns with javascript, and running into some roadblocks. Thanks!
I know nothing about knitting machines but i have noticed alot pops up on my crochet/knittjng feed. What i see mainly is a round knitting machine. My curiousity is how the heck do you knit a round piece for plus size ladies? Because what i have been seeing is the panel method or knit in the round with cables. I just cant do that manipulation with the two needles unless its bulky yarn. And i like that finer yarn knit. So yes, my curiosity is peaked when this popped up. I will be watching you some more, i think.
This what I have and is amazing here's the problem I am having I put ten stitches in work knit my rows, then I need to put them in hold to add another ten stitches to knit my rows so I can then connect the 20 stitches and keep knitting but when I do this once I finish the first 10 stitches put them in hold to start the next 10 stitches for some reason a loop forms on every pace, how can I adviod this loop from forming when I have my stitches inhold working on the next stitches adjacent to it?
I just took out the brother kx350 I purchased from our thrift store here and it is pretty much identical to this. I’m cleaning it up and trying to find out how to spruce it up. It appears I need to replace the sponge bar. The machine is super clean but I can’t get it to knit and the sponge bar is what I’m thinking it is. There is also a brother kh 965 near me that was posted and now I’m wondering if I should take the plunge and get that as well. 😅 I’m a hand knitter and when I saw the speed these thinks function at I about fell over 😂. Do you know much about the kh965? I’m thinking I’m going to be looking for a mechanical one real quick lol. Thank you!
I have a brother kh 910, a singer srp 50, and another singer, and 3 Empisals with various bits and pieces. Why so many? Well its because they were on facebook market place for small sums such as $50 for a pile of books, bags of yarn on cones, punch cards etc. I am an artist as well and I was interested in the early models and the analogue computing nature if some of the machines. Intuitively I just started picking them up just to give them a home. Some of these machines had never been opened up. Intimidating gifts?. Others need a good servicing after years of use. I agree a generation or more have turned their back on this craft.
hey! thank you for the video! Does this have a punch card? i am still doing my research (i dont know anything about machine knitting) and punch card systems are still very mysterious to me. for example this machine that you showed us now, can I buy an attachment that lets me insert a punch card and create designs? or does it have to be an entirely different machine making it harder for a beginner? sorry if this is a stupid question !
This machine does not have a punch card attachment available. Needle selection is hand manipulated. There is a tool called the needle beedle that may make some patterns faster to select.
I have six different knitting machines but always, always come back to the Lk150. She's named "Skinny Little B!tch", a Courtney Love song. One thing she demands is a flat, level surface. Likely it's because of the non metal bed. That's OK. She's just such a reliable little thing.
Hi - I wonder, does the idea of knitting the wrong side/right side translate to machine knitting. Just trying to visualise that in my mind - thinking logically, moving the carriage from starting e.g. left to right is the 'right side' and back right to left being the 'wrong side' but would value others thoughts - Diolch! Hi ! Thank you so much for this video ! ❤️❤️ Would this machine work with thinner yarns like mohair ? I love the look of loose knitted mohair making it transparent

of the swatch with the side for your sts to get the guage. lots of sts and small size = higher count and few sts with wide fabric = lower count.
I’m not a beginner, I owned a SK280 & ribber but had to sell it a few years ago 😢 I’d love to buy a new one but they are more than double the price of a new LK150, even second hand ones 😮
This looks decent enough to create something wearable and will be cheaper to use as coned 4 ply yarn is pretty expensive. Reminds me of the Bond Classic I had when I was younger. I need to learn the hand manipulation techniques.
Thank you for posting this! I ordered this model knitting machine and blame you for a cool new hobby. Loving your channel, keep up the great work!
I am ok with being a bad influence.
Thank you so much. As someone beginning their journey into machine knitting, this has been really helpful.
I must scale down and decide what to keep!! ...enjoy it
Yo thanks for this!!! As a fellow coder who's interested in textiles these machines seem super cool. Thanks for introducing me!
Been contemplating getting a knitting machine, however I don't want to buy a used one since I'm certain that repairs and restoration in NOT for me, but knew machines are a little out of my price range, however this one might actually be doable with a little saving, so I would love at watch a complete beginner series on this.
I have this machine and love making the spiral baby blanket with it
The rulers are for knitting gauge.
Great machine! Your software approach works really well for me too
Great glad I found your podcast. Very interested in getting a beginner knit machine.
I'm buying one of these, but brand new, like you, because of the same reasons you said, meaning that pieces can get lost!!
I found this exact one for 480 euros brand new, so I'm trying to save up for this one!! (Which is kind of hard, since I'm on disability leave) but I have saved for a few months already!
dying hobby? i think its a hobby on the rise
idk about ya'll but its knitting is quite popular these days, knitting and crochetting as well
I wouldn’t call it “dying,” but more people crochet and crochet is more respected than knitting tends to be.
I just bought this machine and it came today from Amazon. I'm so glad I found your channel! You made this much more easily understood! Cheers!
This is my first day watching your UA-cam channel n my first sight of a knitting machine ... Wowww ... Getting more n more interesting ... Thank you for sharing. Subscribed and learning more before i get machine.
Nylon rattail cording is a perfect substitute for a ravel cord. Especially if you like to do recovery lines
I highly recommend acquiring a Needle Beetle for your machine. They are a really awesome tool for doing pattern stitches.
Thank you for the video!.
I’m also looking forward to seeing your other videos to see what you are doing for hooking one to an Arduino!
Very cool!
I love this channel.
Thank you for this super helpful intro to machine knitting. I'm just getting started so this was very helpful.
I have this machine, and another mid gauge, a brother standard with ribber and a bulky with ribber. But I'm still a beginner.
🎉❤ ive always wanted to use a knitting machine and automate it, but i never knew where to start, but I'm so glad to have stumbled on your channel 😊
no freakin way i was gonna get one just today!?! i put it off tilo finish something before acquiring something new
Congrats on your find!
Thank you!
9:35 tell me you have a gopro without telling me you have a gopro. 😂
Thanks!
"this is a nice little mashine" ...yeah def..i wouldnt even have any spot where to place n work with that xD thanks for sharing tho its interesting to see whats possible and what tools r out there for such crafts
Thanks for sharing! Great video
Thanks for making this video! It was very helpful!
Grazie dall'Italia! Your video It is very accurate! I would likes tò start and italiano video are so dark and difficult
I'm torn between the sk840 and sk280, but I'm pretty interested in this one too for basic things.
Well, I know what I'm asking for for my next birthday 🎉. . .
You call them guide wires, I call them bunny ears...
Thanks for the tutorial!
It’s pretty interesting how many fellow devs are interested in textiles. Maybe has to do with making things?
I'm here because I'm interested in automating a knitting machine like this. Sort of a 3d printer for knitting. Probably will never finish it, but with arduinos, raspberry pies, and even servos so cheap, the time is now
Good luck!
Good research
Thanks!
Also love your videos so much!
Uh oh. Now i think i need one of these.
I might have more
Fantastic thanks
I say this as a software engineer, you are sooo inspiring. What's your opinion on making your own punch cards?
How do I know which knitting machine can do 2 yarns at a time? Also, is there one that can do thin to med range and 2 yarn at a time?
hey! thank you for the video!
Do you know if a knit radar k-3 will work on the lk150?
I have six different knitting machines but always, always come back to the Lk150. She's named "Skinny Little B!tch", a Courtney Love song.
One thing she demands is a flat, level surface. Likely it's because of the non metal bed. That's OK. She's just such a reliable little thing.
what are you playing on the piano?
Hi - I wonder, does the idea of knitting the wrong side/right side translate to machine knitting. Just trying to visualise that in my mind - thinking logically, moving the carriage from starting e.g. left to right is the 'right side' and back right to left being the 'wrong side' but would value others thoughts - Diolch!

Hi ! Thank you so much for this video ! ❤️❤️ Would this machine work with thinner yarns like mohair ? I love the look of loose knitted mohair making it transparent
Yes, you can knit with mohair.
I have been enjoying your knitting video i would like to have a knitting machine please how can i get one am at kenya❤
