  • Making your own onion powder at home is a very simple project. Homemade onion powder really puts store-bought powder to shame... the taste is much better, there are no fillers, preservatives or other questionable ingredients and it only takes a few dollars worth of onions and a few minutes of time to make.
    But beware, once you try it you may never be able to go back to the store-bought version. Like always, homemade is the best!

    To remove that strong smell from your grinder use it for dried or stale bread of any type (even gluten free) afterwards-- in other words make bread crumbs in it. It will take away the odor if enough ground in it & your breadcrumbs will be great on top of soup or fish or even chicken.

    Home made onion powder from home grown onions is amazing. I make mine using a combination of green onion tops & stored bulbs, dehydrated, and then ground into powder. I used to have a big container of onion powder from Costco. When I tasted my own powder vs. store-bought I immediately dumped the store-bought stuff out. So now I've got a Costco-sized container of delicious home made onion powder. 😋

    I positively LOVE you for making and sharing this video! made my first batch a few days ago and garlic too. I baked a chicken using these powders and my beloved lady and I were in TEARS at the richness of the flavor! I can't wait to learn more from you. And Ellie can't wait for me to do more cooking! 🤓

    Nice video . Enjoyed it .
    Just a little tip , take a spray bottle and put vinegar and water in it . If the onions are really strong you can use half vinegar and half water . Shake it up and spray on the onions while chopping , slicing etc. spray more vinegar and water mixture as you need it . You won't have any tear's ! My son told me about this tip while I was crying from chopping onions . Works like a charm . Hope this helps . Blessings , Linda

      Just dont chop the hairy ends off and you wont cry. Always leave it on, even if u cut in half. Then slice/dice

    I am in the UK and use Bicarbonate of soda, which is, I think baking soda in the US to remove smells. Works really well to take away the smell from your trays/blender etc. One teaspoon per pint of warm water. Use it to wash or soak anything that needs deodorising. Thanks for the video, I will give dried onions a go this year .

    Just a tip: Stainless steel eliminates onion & garlic odor! As you rinse your hands, rub them along the faucet and rinse again; if you've got the smells in your dehydrator, take a stainless steel spoon and rub it all over the tray, then rinse the tray; it should kill the odors fairly quickly.

      I have a piece of stainless steel in the shape of a soap bar on a rubber mat at my sink. Removes onion, fish, garlic and all strong smells. Never.loses potency. I have had mine for 20+ years
      DEFINITELY WORTH IT AND AMAZING PURCHASE THAT I HAVE GOTTEN MY MONEY OUT OF DAILY. IT WORKS ALSO FOR SO MANY OTHER SCENTS THAT YOU DONT WANT ON YOUR HANDS! IT IS AS WONDERFUL AS A LEMON HAND BOWL!!!!❤️❤️👍💕💕🍓🌞🌞🍊🍊🍊🍊❤️🍋🍋👍🍓❤️🎃❤️❤️❤️❤️💕🐾

    Some rural areas in the south of Morocco they dry onions and they make very delicious pancakes of them ;flour and olive oil .
    they call them Azalim in the Berber language .

    Try making leek powder. It’s delicious and a bit milder than onion powder. I didn’t like composting all those lovely green tops of the leeks so I washed them well, let them air dry for a while, then snipped them into uniform pieces with a scissors. No crying and so much faster than slicing onions. Dehydrate and powder the same way as in the video. Your house smells wonderful since leeks are not as strong. Delicious in eggs, casseroles, roasts etc.

    If you store onions with the root down, the strength will go down to the root, and then cut that root end first you will not cry. I promise
    This works. Restaurant used this technique. Or store them cold. The strength is not as strong. Give it a try.

      I always cut that first and store them root down
      Without my contact lenses in, I’m in pain from the fumes

    If your range vents to the outside you could set the dehydrator on the stove and use that. I found that it helps a lot.

    After checking out your home-made garlic salt, I checked this video out as well and look forward to making it. Again, In Israel I could not find onion powder, so I ordered it on Amazon and paid through the nose to get it. You have just saved me a huge amount of money when I finally run out of onion powder.     The first time we did this the entire house smelled like French onion soup haha, but I've learned to keep all the bedroom doors closed and the dehydrator goes in a closed room with a fan when we do onions and garlic ... homemade is EXTRA tasty

    I like to make a blend. I make powder, flakes, and chopped all dehydrated. But I use yellow onion, white onion, leeks, and green onions all mixed together.

    Back in my younger years when I wore hard contact lenses, I was the official onion chopper in my family, didn't bother me one bit. Now I grow sweet onions only, today I am drying any that are going soft. Not crying but I do have a burning of my eyes. Six racks in my food dryer so pretty good test. Enjoy your videos, thanks

    Tip, to keep eyes from watering when chopping onions,put onions in fridge for approx. 20 minutes.

    If you light a candle and place it near the cutting board while youre chopping onions, the candle with burn off the fumes from the onions and you wont tear up as much, maybe not at all. Works for me!

    I have recently bought an air fryer rotisserie and was going to buy some onion powder on my next shop. You have convinced me that I needn't bother. I'm preparing my onions now, obviously wearing a gas mask :) My Air Fryer goes down to 65c (I live in England and they switched us to centigrade) So I'll dehydrate them there. Thanks for this lovely video.

    Great! Thank you!! I did my garlic earlier this year. Onion is a wonderful idea. I'll have to do this. I use a lot of onion powder in recipes. It's a time saver. It'll be good t know it isn't all GMO or anything.

    am lucky am widow live on my own i put them on b4 bed and its fine by morning i use my skins for flavouring and colour for my wool am a scot so am very frugal

    Don`t trow the onion shells. You can make a very good antivirus tea, or you can use it for coloring soup and for coloring ester eggs. You get a nice chestnut brown color.

    I always keep my onions refrigerated. I never cry slicing them! I tried everything from holding bread of crackers in my mouth to everything else! Refrigerating them actually works!!

    Last month I sliced at least 15 pounds of yellow onions to make and can French onion soup. I used safety goggles that fit close to your face...like a scuba mask. It was amazing!!! Not one tear. Next time you cut onions, you may want to give this a try.

    I found that after drying, to freeze the onions un-powdered? Take some out of the freezer and grind as needed. Much more fresh. Same works for garlic. I use a pestle and mortar.

    I put a wooden spoon in the door of my oven when I dry rusks to keep it slightly ajar. That brings the temperature down slightly so the don't brown from too high heat at minimum setting

    Can I get the same results by drying the onions on parchmenpaper in the oven. If so on what temperature, and how long, or will the heat destroy the nutritional value. Thanks again for taking time out of busy day, to show us, your gold nuggets of knowledge. 😃😃😃
