Oh no! I've now reached the age where the SL class looks beautiful and with that performance a real contender. Take that Doug DeMuro who said 2 generations ago that the SL was pointless.
As a former owner of a 2014 Sl Amg, bought brand new in 2013...it was a great car for the first 33k miles...then in came the gremlins. Sold it in 2019 and bought a 2020 Lexus Lc500. This new Sl63 looks tempting though, but will mercedes make them reliable, like gramps 85 560sel( I think it was a 560), that car was a tank
@@TheCarCrazyGuy we’re just about there. Hell anyone that’s single/married with a mortgage, a kid or two clearing 200k combined would still not be able to afford that car now! WTH.
Maybe the Maybach SL680 will restore the V12 majesty to the breed. Truth is, outside of the track SL's are the original autobahn bred road weapons meant for crossing continents. Think DC to Miami. Up on the interstates it's 50-70mph acceleration that matters most in the cut and thrust combat of high speed traffic. It's also were this little 4L V8 surrenders to Twin Turbo V12 SL's of yore.
Personally, I don't think reinventing this as a performance car was the right move. I liked the "old man" cruisers, and they sold very well throughout the decades, right through the 00's. Things went sideways when the styling went WAY off around 2013, and it began looking like two different cars from the front and rear - and neither of them particularly good looking. The recipe needed a serious reworking for this next generation, but a complete identity shift did not need to happen. It's a cool car, but feels more lost than ever. Now it's competing directly with much stiffer competition - 911's, even lower end Bentleys and Astons, and it's just not that. Bring back the SLS/SLR/Gullwing/etc for those exotic car duties, and let the SL shine as a fast, classic, elegant convertible cruiser as it always has.
So many people are clearly lost.....the SLR and SLS were high dollar exotics to compete with Ferrari, Lamborghini etc not Bentleys....the SL has always been an "alternative " to the 911........in concept it has always been closest until the Sl based AMG GT. This SL is closer in concept to the Bentley Continental, and Aston Martin DB11 than the 911 ever will be.....luxurious high powered 2+2s with rag tops......not sure what you're talking about......
My 2008 SL 550 get more attention than the new SL, in the best places at the Jersey Shore, Longport, OC, SIc , Avalon,, SH,, like the man said: this version don’t turn heads like other SL did before.
This SL has small back seats. When did that happen? It does save on car insurance but it's unusual. Can't really seat any person back there but it's interesting.
The base 2 door AMG GT 2 door (2 seater) is less costly than this car and looks way better. It has (or had) the 523 twin turbo vs the 577hp, however. But at $127K with options and gorgeous looks, I would take that one.
This has to be the most... confused SL ever. The aggressive styling, AMG engine and soft top instead of a hardtop suggest a car more suited for weekend backroad-bombing, but the S-Class tech, AWD and 4000 LBS curb weight is more in-line with a traditional SL: a ultra-lux daily driver convertible. I wish it would pick a side and not try to be a jack of all trades, that's never what the SL was about.
@@Mystery_Man84 You're right, but I was eluding to the sum-of-the-whole. The AMG is a better built car overall and probably will still be on the road years after the Jaguar dies.
Wait for the AMG CLE Cabriolet. It will literally have exactly the same tech (all of which you can get in the newest C-class AMG), look nearly identical, with performance off by only a second, but for less than half the price. This review was typical of motorweek: their true feelings hidden behind a shroud of diplomatic speak. If you listen carefully they are saying the car is too heavy (multiple times), it's mega expensive, so you can probably get a better value going somewhere else.
Since 1981 ! He's the founder of car reviews ( Motorweek), without him, having the idea of making a tv show dedicated to review new cars, would not exist channels and car review programs that we enjoy now.
@@jmin8400 It’s just such a shame that it doesn’t look like a $180,000 car, unlike some of the previous SL’s. Btw there’s no need to be so condescending, I’m merely expressing my personal opinion, but it seems everyone is offended by something nowadays.
This is not what an SL should be. This should be a lighter, simpler LUXURY convertible, not a boy racer. Mercedes needs a normal 6 or 8 cylinder priced around $75k. $140k is ridiculous and $180 is insaane. I hope they stack to ceilings and are sales proof.
Considering an sl500 was 81k base in 1999 the 140k price is right inline with inflation etc. The sl has always been a car for the upper middle class. Give it a few years and I'm sure a used one can be picked up for 80k.
I don't know what it is you're talking about, the SL has always been incredibly expensive the SL65 and SL black series were far more expensive than 180k, it NEVER in modern generations was a light car maybe you wanted a new SLK because the SL has never fit in the price point you're talking about. Why would they take it down market......and boy racer would be a Civic type r, gr corolla , etc how you can call this boy racer is silliness
MB is willing to complicate things further by reintroducing the AMG GT grand tourer. I suppose only a shorter wheelbase, a lesser starting price and a fixed roof should differentiate the two.
The SL is unique low production high end performance vehicle built with very high end materials. The price tag is well within reason. $75k buys you a well equipped Jeep Wrangler unlimited Rubicon.
Outdated on arrival. Why not an inline 6 with a revised M256 from the E53 and less obese? And bring back haptic buttons no touch screen BS! Major failure this car! It would be more an AMG GT successor..
Ugh, the whole car is a bizarre mishmash of styles. Only attractive thing is the seats. Also seems to be a waste to pay so much money for what is essentially a killer engine attached to a me-too car that offers no unique driving experience.
I think the exterior looks good, though bland in some angles from the rear. However, I agree with the interior. It lacks passion & timelessness in design, especially for how much it costs.
They NAILED the design of this car. Best looking Merc by far right now.
Iconic AMG performance for sure. Sleek and powerful, but I still miss some of the older versions though. Gullwings.
John Davis FOREVER🛣
That new front end design is superb and coescive
Oh no! I've now reached the age where the SL class looks beautiful and with that performance a real contender. Take that Doug DeMuro who said 2 generations ago that the SL was pointless.
Doug sometimes gets it wrong. He has yet to review that R230 SL Roadster of two generations ago.
Doug is becoming pointless.
